3. Book of Purification (2/12)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ forbade a man from entering the water except with a waist covering."
The Prophet ﷺ used to take a bath on account of sexual defilement, on Friday, for cupping and washing the dead. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3160)
[Machine] Fatimah entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while she was crying, so he said, "O my daughter, what makes you cry?" She said, "O father, why shouldn't I cry when those leaders of the Quraysh in the chamber are making a contract with Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat? If they saw you, they would stand up and kill you, and there is not one of them except that he knows his share of your blood." He said, "O my daughter, bring me water for ablution." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution, then he went out to the mosque. When they saw him, they said, "There he is, so bow down." Their foreheads fell and their beards touched the ground, and they did not raise their eyes until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a handful of dust and threw it at them, saying, "May their faces be disfigured." None of them was touched by a pebble from his handful except that he was killed on the Day of Badr as a disbeliever.
[Machine] "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early days of his prophethood in Makkah. He was at that time in a state of concealment. I asked him, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am a prophet.' I asked, 'What is a prophet?' He said, 'I am the Messenger of Allah.' I asked, 'Did Allah send you?' He replied, 'Yes.' I asked, 'With what did He send you?' He said, 'To worship Allah alone and to break idols and false religions, and to maintain family ties.' I said, 'Yes, indeed. What did He send you with?' I asked, 'Who follows you in this?' He said, 'Slave and free, meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal.' Umar used to say, 'I was a quarter or a fourth of Islam when I accepted Islam.' I said, 'Shall I follow you, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'No, but the truth will come to your people. When you hear that I have left, follow me.' So, I caught up with my people and I anticipated his news of departure and arrival until a group from Yathrib (Madina) came and I met them. I asked them about the news and they said, 'The Messenger of Allah has left Makkah for Madina.' I asked, 'Has he arrived there?' They replied, 'Yes.' I then proceeded until I reached him. I said, 'Do you recognize me, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Yes, you are the man who came to me in Makkah.' I began to observe his seclusion and when he was alone, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me about what Allah has taught you and make it concise.' He said, 'Ask me about anything.' I said, 'During which part of the night should I perform the night prayer?' He replied, 'The last part of the night. And pray as much as you wish because the prayer is witnessed and recorded until you pray the dawn prayer. Then shorten your prayer until the sun rises and its rays are like the length of a spear or a pair of spears. Because at that time, the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then, pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and recorded until the shadow of your spear becomes equal to its length. Then, shorten your prayer because Hellfire is kindled and its gates are opened. When the sun declines, pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and recorded until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then, shorten your prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of Satan and the disbelievers prostrate to it. When you perform ablution, wash your hands, for when you wash your hands, your sins leave from the sides of your arms. Then, when you wipe your head, your sins leave from the tips of your hair. And when you wash your feet, your sins leave from your feet. If you remain seated in your place, you will have a share of your ablution. If you stand up and remember your Lord and praise Him and perform two raka'ahs facing the Qiblah, with your heart, you will be free from your sins as on the day your mother gave birth to you.' I said, 'O Umar, I know what I am saying. You are saying something great.' He said, 'By Allah, my age has increased and my death is near, and I am not in need of lying. Even if I had heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only once or twice, I would have conveyed it. But I have heard it more than that. This is how Abu Salamah narrated it from him, from Abu Umamah, except for any possible error or addition. And Muslim has recorded some of these words from the hadith of Nadr ibn Muhammad al-Jurashi, from Ikrimah ibn Ammar, from Shaddad ibn Abdullah, from Abu Umamah.' Umar ibn Abbas said, 'And the hadith of Abbas ibn Salim is more comprehensive and complete than the hadith of Ikrimah ibn Ammar.'"

[Machine] A man became unwell during winter, so he asked if he could perform ablution (washing). He then performed the ablution and passed away. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of this incident and he said, "Why did they kill him? Allah has killed them all." He repeated this thrice and added, "Allah has made the desert or dry ablution (tayammum) sufficient for purification."
[Machine] "If a man is performing surgery in the way of Allah, or has wounds or chickenpox, and he avoids washing due to fear of death, then he should perform tayammum."
The Messenger of Allah said: "The urine of a boy should be sprinkled over and the urine of a girl should be washed." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 527)
[Machine] "When Al-Hussein came into Prophet Muhammad's room, I said to him, 'Give me your garment so I can wash it.' He replied, 'It is only washed by the urine of a female and sprinkled with the urine of a male.' And the second witness is authentic."
[Machine] "I was a servant of the Prophet ﷺ, and I brought Hassan or Hussein, and the Prophet put him on his chest. They wanted to wash him, so he said, 'Sprinkle him with water, as he is washed with the urine of a little girl and sprinkled with the urine of a boy.' The two sheikhs have mentioned the urination of the baby, a narration from Aisha and Umm Qais bint Muhsin, that the Prophet ﷺ ordered water to be poured on the urine of the baby. As for the mention of the urine of the baby girl, they did not mention it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "If one of you steps on something harmful with his shoe, then indeed the dirt is purification for him." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the summary.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When any one of you treads with his sandal upon an unclean place, the earth will render it purified. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 385)
Muhajir came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was urinating. He saluted him. The Prophet ﷺ did not return the salutation to him until he performed ablution. He then apologised to him, saying: I disliked remembering Allah except in the state of purification. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 17)
The Prophet ﷺ had a wooden vessel under his bed in which he would urinate at night. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 24)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Be on your guard against three things which provoke cursing: easing in the watering places and on the thoroughfares, and in the shade (of the tree). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 26)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: No one of you should make water in his bath and then wash himself there (after urination). The version of Ahmad has: Then performs ablution there, for evil thoughts come from it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 27)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ prohibited one of us from rubbing his body or urinating in his bathing place every day.
[Machine] He went out as a pilgrim or a performer of Umrah, with people accompanying him, and he was leading them. One day, after he performed the morning prayer, he said, "Let one of you proceed and go to the restroom." Then he said, "Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'When one of you wants to go to the restroom and the prayer has been established, they should start with the restroom.'"
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "It is not permissible for a man who believes in Allah and the Last Day to pray while he is in a state of impurity until he relieves himself."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: "One should not pray in the presence of food, nor while he is defending the two things that invalidates the prayer."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, so we brought him water in a container made of animal skin. He performed ablution with it." "This is a authentic hadith according to the condition set by the two scholars (i.e., Bukhari and Muslim) and they did not narrate it themselves." "There is a corroborating witness from the narration of Aisha, according to their condition."
I and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take bath with a brass vessel. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 98)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out an expedition. They were affected by cold. When they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he commanded them to wipe over turbans and stockings. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 146)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution (wudu') while wearing a Qatari turban (imamah), then he would put his hand under the turban and wipe the front part of his head without uncovering the turban. Although this hadith may not meet the criteria set by scholars, it contains an unusual phrase stating that he wiped a part of his head without wiping his turban. If this is correct, it indicates that he wiped a part of his head.
Jarir urinated. He then performed ablution and wiped over the socks. He said: What can prevent me from wiping (over the socks); I saw the Messenger of Allah (doing so). They (the people) said: This (action of yours) might be valid before the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah. He replied: I embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah. [Machine] Regarding the ablution of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , it was reported that he used to leave to attend to his needs, then he would come back with water, perform ablution, and wipe over his turban and shoes.
[Machine] The translation of the given passage into English is:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed wiping over his leather socks. So, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you have forgotten!' He replied, 'No, you have forgotten what my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious, commanded me.' 'The two sheikhs' (referring to Bukhari and Muslim) have agreed to narrate the hadith of Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah regarding wiping, and they did not mention the phrase 'my Lord, the Exalted, commanded me.' Its chain of narration is authentic."
[Machine] From Ubayy ibn Umayrah, who prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the direction of both qiblas, it is reported that he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, should I wipe over both socks?" He said, "Yes." He asked, "For a day?" He replied, "And two days." He asked, "And three?" He said, "Yes, as long as you wish." Ubayy ibn Umayrah was a well-known companion, and this is a reliable chain of narration that has not been attributed to any invalid narrator. Malik ibn Anas and others have reported it.

[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up, he would perform ablution and brush his teeth."
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ sneezing and then he wiped his face.
[Machine] "Abdullah said, 'We used to not perform ablution from a designated place, nor did we remove hair or clothing.'"
“The angels do not enter a house in which there is an image or a person who is junub or a dog.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 1172)
The Prophet ﷺ said about a man who has sexual intercourse with a menstruating woman: He should give one or half dinar as sadaqah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2168)
[Machine] "If it causes bleeding, then the compensation is one dinar, and if it causes minor bleeding, then the compensation is half a dinar." "This hadith has been transmitted and documented, and we have established our foundation based on the saying that is attributed and connected to a trusted source."
'Aishah said; The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) would ask us in the beginning of our menstruation to tie the waist-wrapper. Then he would embrace us. And who amongst you can have as much control over his desire as the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) had over his desire? (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 273)
Hamnah said my menstruation was great in quantity and severe. So I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a decision and told him. I found him in the house of my sister, Zaynab, daughter of Jahsh. I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who menstruates in great quantity and it is severe, so what do you think about it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting. He said: I suggest that you should use cotton, for it absorbs the blood. She replied: It is too copious for that. He said: Then take a cloth. She replied: It is too copious for that, for my blood keeps flowing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I shall give you two commands; whichever of them you follow, that will be sufficient for you without the other, but you know best whether you are strong enough to follow both of them. He added: This is a stroke of the Devil, so observe your menses for six or seven days, Allah alone knows which it should be; then wash. And when you see that you are purified and quite clean, pray during twenty-three or twenty-four days and nights and fast, for that will be enough for you, and do so every month, just as women menstruate and are purified at the time of their menstruation and their purification. But if you are strong enough to delay the noon (Zuhr) prayer and advance the afternoon ('Asr) prayer, to wash, and then combine the noon and the afternoon prayer; to delay the sunset prayer and advance the night prayer, to wash, and then combine the two prayers, do so: and to wash at dawn, do so: and fast if you are able to do so if possible. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Of the two commands this is more to my liking.1 Abu Dawud said: 'Amr b. Thabit narrated from Ibn 'Aqil: Hamnah said: Of the two commands this is the one which is more to my liking.2 In this version these words were not quoted as the statement of the Prophet ﷺ; it gives it as a statement of Hamnah. Abu Dawud said: 'Amr b. Thabit was a Rafidi. This has been said by Yahya b. Ma'in. Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad (b. Hanbal) say: I am doubtful about the tradition transmitted by Ibn 'Aqil. [Machine] Um Habibah experienced Istihadah for seven years while she was under the care of Abdul Rahman ibn Auf. The Prophet ﷺ instructed her, saying, "When the menstrual bleeding starts, leave the prayer. And when it stops, perform ablution and pray." This narration is authentic according to the conditions of both Al-Bukhari and Muslim. It was not included by them, but it was included by Muslim in a different narration from Sufyan ibn `Uyaynah and Ibrahim ibn Sa`d, narrated from Az-Zuhri. Muhammad ibn `Amr ibn Alqamah Al-Awza`i also narrated this hadith from Az-Zuhri using the same wording, and it is considered authentic according to the conditions of Muslim, although he did not include it.

"If it is menstrual blood then it is blood that is black and recognizable, so stop praying, and if it is other than that then perform Wudu', for it is just a vein." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 215)
[Machine] I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Indeed, Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh is experiencing continuous bleeding from such and such time, and she is unable to perform the prayer." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Glory be to Allah! This is from Satan trying to prevent her from praying. When she sees a yellowish discharge above the water, let her perform one ablution for Dhuhr and Asr prayers, and another ablution for Maghrib and Isha prayers. And let her perform ghusl (ritual bath) for Fajr prayer, and in between, she should perform ablution."

We never considered yellowish discharge as a thing of importance (as menses). (Using translation from Bukhārī 326)
We would not take into consideration brown and yellow (fluid) after purification. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 307)
[Machine] "She does not have to make up for the postpartum prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ did not command her to pray for forty nights."
[Machine] Abu Asim Al-Nabil narrated to us, Uthman bin Saad Al-Qurashi narrated to us, Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: "My aunt Fatimah bint Abu Hubaysh came to Aisha and said: 'I fear that I will fall into the Fire for abandoning the voluntary prayers for a year or two, as I do not pray them.' Aisha said to her: 'Wait until the Prophet ﷺ comes.' When he arrived, Aisha said: 'This is Fatimah, she says such and such.' The Prophet ﷺ said to her: 'Tell her to leave the voluntary prayers each month for the days when they are read, then she should wash herself with a single wash every day, then she should perform the purification before every prayer, and she should clean herself and put on perfume. Verily, it is just a symptom, or a trick from Satan, or a severed muscle.'"

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Women must observe forty days of postnatal bleeding." "This is a confirmed Sunnah (practice) because this chain of narration, starting from Abu Bilal, is sound and authentic. However, Al-Hasan did not hear it directly from Uthman ibn Abi al-'As, but he has a similar chain of narration as testimony." This statement is attributed uniquely to Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari via Ibn Shihab. If it is sound in transmission from him, then it is an authentic hadith. However, Al-Hasan did not hear directly from Uthman ibn Abi al-'As, but he has a similar chain of narration as testimony.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Women wait for forty nights. If they see purity before that, then they are pure. But if they exceed the forty nights, then they are in the state of istihada (abnormal bleeding). They should wash and pray, and if bleeding overwhelms them, they should perform ablution for each prayer." "Amr bin Al-Husayn and Muhammad bin Uthatha are not among the two Sheikhs (referring to Abu Bakr and Umar), and I only mentioned this Hadith as a witness marveling."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "When a woman experiences menstrual bleeding for seven days and then sees signs of purity, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and offer prayers." Muslim has cited the narration with the addition of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, while as for Al-Aswad bin Tha'labah, he is a well-known person from Syria, and the hadith is considered strange in this context.
A few goats got collected with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Abu Dharr, drive them to the wood. I drove them to Rabadhah (a place near Medina). I would have sexual defilement (during my stay there) and I would remain (in this condition) for five or six days. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: O Abu Dharr. I kept silence. He then said: May your mother bereave you, Abu Dharr: woe be to your mother. He then called a black slave-girl for me. She brought a vessel which contained water. She then concealed me by drawing a curtain and I concealed myself behind a she-camel, and took a bath. I felt as if I had thrown away a mountain from me. He said: Clean earth is a means for ablution for a Muslim, even for ten years (he does not find water); but when you find water, you should make it touch your skin, for that is better. The version of Musaddad has: "the goats (were collected) from the alms," and the tradition reported by 'Amr is complete. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 332)
[Machine] By Allah, I had a dream last night, and by Allah, I have never seen such cold before. Has it ever passed by your faces like this?
They replied, "No." He washed his private parts and performed ablution for prayer. Then he prayed with them. When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "How did you find 'Amr and his companions?"
They praised him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, he prayed with us while he was in a state of major impurity." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for 'Amr and asked him, and he informed him about that and what he had experienced from the cold.
'Amr said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): 'And do not kill yourselves.' [Quran 4:29] If I had taken a bath while I was still impure, he laughed to 'Amr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
I had a sexual dream on a cold night in the battle of Dhat as-Salasil. I was afraid, if I washed I would die. I, therefore, performed tayammum and led my companions in the dawn prayer. They mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Amr, you led your companions is prayer while you were sexually defiled? I informed him of the cause which impeded me from washing. And I said: I heard Allah say: "Do not kill yourself, verily Allah is merciful to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and did not say anything. Abu Dawud said: 'Abd al-Rahman b. Jubair is an Egyptian and a freed slave of Kharijah b. Hudhafah. He is not Jubair b. Nufair (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 334)

[Machine] A man got injured during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Then he experienced a wet dream, so he took a bath and died. This news reached the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, "They killed him, may Allah kill them. Wasn't the treatment for a sick eye to ask for a cure?" It has reached us that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about this incident, and he said, "If he had washed his body and left his head where the injury was, it would have been sufficient." Al-Hakam ibn Ziyad narrated this, and he is considered reliable among the companions of Al-Awza'i. However, he did not mention hearing it from Ata.
