26. Book of Expeditions (1/3)

٢٦۔ كِتَابُ الْمَغَازِي وَالسَّرَايَا ص ١

[Machine] Narrated to us Al-Hakim Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Hafiz, dictation in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, in the year 401:

The book includes the biography of the Maghazi (battles) and the Saraya (expeditions), as well as other events and the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The two shaykhs (referring to Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim) agreed on what is authentic in this book. It contains many narrations attributed to Abu Zubair, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Muslim alone stood out in compiling these narrations, and there are few remaining narrations that are reliable from sources other than him.

The dream of ʿĀtikah (aunt of the Prophet ﷺ) forewarning the Battle of Badr and surrounding events

hakim:4297Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār > Yūnus b. Bukayr > Ibn Isḥāq > Ḥusayn b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbbās > ʿIkrimah > Ibn ʿAbbās > Ibn Isḥāq > Yazīd b. Rūmān > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr

[Machine] Atika, the daughter of Abdul Muttalib, saw a dream that alarmed her. It was about a man named Dammam bin Amr Al-Ghifari. He appeared to be a terrifying figure to the Quraysh in Makkah for three consecutive nights. Atika became greatly disturbed by this dream and sent a message to her brother, Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, informing him about it.

She said, "Oh, my brother, I had a dream last night that frightened me. It indicated that your people will face harm and calamity. The man in the dream approached on a camel and stopped at Aabtah. He then called out, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' I saw people gathering around him, and then he entered the mosque with his camel. The people gathered around him again. Suddenly, he reached the top of the Kāba and called out, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' Then his camel appeared on top of Abi Qubays, and he called out once again, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' He then picked up a rock and sent it rolling down the mountain. It kept rolling until it reached the bottom, destroying every house and building of your people.

Al-Abbas said, "By Allah, this is indeed a vision. Conceal it." She said, "And you, conceal it. If this reaches the people of Quraysh, they will harm us." So Al-Abbas left her and met Walid ibn Utbah, who was his friend. He mentioned it to him and entrusted him with it. Walid mentioned it to his father, and the news spread. Al-Abbas said, "By Allah, I will go to the Kāba to circumambulate it." When I entered the mosque, there was Abu Jahl with a group from Quraysh talking about Aatikah's vision.

Abu Jahl said, "O Abu al-Fadl, when did this prophetess say this to you?" I replied, "And what is that?" He said, "A vision seen by Atika, the daughter of Abdul-Muttalib. Have you, sons of Abdul-Muttalib, consented that your men should prophesy until even your women prophesy? We will wait for these three that Atika mentioned. If it is true, it will happen, and if not, we will write a document against you, for you are the most lying household in the Arab land. By Allah, there is no significant matter except that I have denied what she said. I said, 'She saw nothing, and I heard nothing like this.'"

By evening, every woman from the Banu Abdul Muttalib came to me, blaming me for not preventing this corrupted man from causing harm to our men and approaching our women. They said, "Didn't you have any sense of honor?" I replied, "By Allah, you speak the truth. I had doubts, but if he repeats this, I will handle him."

I sat there, waiting for the third day to confront him and make him say something. I cursed him in my heart, thinking that it was better to confront him than to curse him. Suddenly, I heard Ḍamḍam bin Amr reciting verses while standing on his camel at Aabtah. He had unraveled his turban and torn his shirt. He referred to the people of Mecca, saying, "Oh, deceitful and sinful Quraysh, your wealth is with Abu Sufyan, and your trade has been taken by Muhammad and his companions. Seek help from the devil." He then continued to recite for some time. This distracted me, and I only had my device until we left the city.

Quraish suffered a great loss that day, as they had in the Battle of Badr. They lost many noble people and their best warriors. Atika, the daughter of Abdul Muttalib, said, "Wasn't the dream true and did it not warn you? You said that it wasn't true, and I didn't lie. Whoever denies the truth is indeed a liar."

So Abd Allah bin Rawaha said, "Come into a valley with a lot of firewood, then set a fire and throw them into it." Al-Abbas said, "May Allah have mercy on you! O Messenger of Allah!" Umar said, "Their leaders and chiefs fought against you and denied you, so strike their necks." Abu Bakr said, "These are your relatives and people." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered to fulfill one of his needs, so a group of people said, "What did Umar say?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said, "What do you say about them? Indeed, the example of these people is like the example of a group of brothers before them. Abd Allah said, "Except Suhail bin Bayda, as he should not be killed, and I have heard him speaking about Islam." So he kept silent. That day was the most fearful day for me, when I feared that stones would rain down on me from the sky, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Except Suhail bin Bayda."

[Machine] "When he arrived in Al-Madina with the prisoners, Sawda bint Zam'a, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , was with the family of the Banu 'Afrah in their camp in A'wuf and Mu'awwadh, the sons of 'Afrah. This was before the veil was prescribed for them. Sawda said, 'By Allah, I was with them when we were brought [to Al-Madina], and it was said, "These are the prisoners who have been brought." So I returned to my house, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was present. Suddenly, Abu Yazid Suhail bin 'Amr was seen in the corner of the room, with his hands tied together around his neck with a rope. By Allah, I have never experienced fear like the moment I saw Abu Yazid like that. I asked, "Abu Yazid, have you given them your own hands? So would you not die as a noble person?" I did not calm down until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke from the house, saying, "O Sawda, may Allah and His Messenger protect you." Upon hearing this, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I swear by the One who sent you with the truth, I was frightened when I saw Abu Yazid with his hands tied around his neck with a rope, so I said what I said.""

When the people of Mecca sent about ransoming their prisoners Zaynab sent some property to ransom Abul'As, sending among it a necklace of hers which Khadijah had had, and (which she) had given to her when she married Abul'As. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw it, he felt great tenderness about it and said: If you consider that you should free her prisoner for her and return to her what belongs to her, (it will be well). They said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made an agreement with him that he should let Zaynab come to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Zayd ibn Harithah and a man of the Ansar (the Helpers) and said: Wait in the valley of Yajij till Zaynab passes you, then you should accompany her and bring her back. [Machine] About the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , on the day of Uhud, I retreated and said to myself, "I will defend myself, either I will be martyred or I will be saved until I meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . While I was thinking this, a man with a covered face appeared, and I didn't know who he was. The pagans approached, and I said, "They have caught up with me." He filled his hand with pebbles and threw them at their faces, causing them to fall on their backs. This happened repeatedly, and I still didn't know who he was. Between me and him was Miqdad ibn Aswad, and while I wanted to ask Miqdad about him, Miqdad said, "O Sa'd! This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ calling you." I asked, "Where is he?" Miqdad pointed towards him, so I stood up, as if I had not been harmed at all. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Where were you, O Sa'd?" I replied, "I was wherever I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then made me sit in front of him, and I began to throw stones while saying, "O Allah, let Your arrow reach your enemy." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, answer the supplication of Sa'd. O Allah, make his aim accurate." Sa'd said, "I swear by my parents, I did not throw a single arrow without the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'O Allah, make his aim accurate and answer his supplication, O Sa'd.'" When I finished my quiver, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ scattered everything in his quiver towards me, and I was hit by a sharp arrow. The arrow was the most severe of all. Az-Zuhri said, "The arrows thrown by Sa'd that day numbered a thousand."

[Machine] Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, when people gathered around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uhud, I was the first to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I looked at him again, and there was a man who embraced me from behind like a bird seeking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . It turned out to be Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah. Then I saw a man lifting him up and putting him down again. So, I said to myself, "When he makes a mistake, I will be there with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Then Talhah came, and that was me. We both approached him and Talhah lifted him up and put him down. Then Talhah had sixty-six wounds, and one of them was on his eye, which had turned black. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hit on his cheeks, two rings from the rings of forgiveness stuck to his cheeks. When Abu Ubaidah saw what happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he asked me to be able to switch places with me. He took one of them and used his teeth to remove it, and then he looked at the other one and said to me, "May Allah reward you for your sacrifice between me and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then snatched it with his teeth and pulled his cheeks apart, and the ring fell and bounced. Then he looked at the other one and said to me, "May Allah reward you for your sacrifice between me and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He seized it with his teeth and pulled his cheeks apart, and the ring fell and bounced. Therefore, Abu Ubaidah's cheeks carried the marks of the rings.

[Machine] Amr ibn Qais had a pre-Islamic idol that prevented him from embracing Islam. One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions came to him during the Battle of Uhud and asked about Sa'd ibn Muadh. They said he was at Uhud. He asked about his brother's sons. They said they were at Uhud. He then asked about his people and they said they were at Uhud. He took his sword, spear, and armor, and wore his hooded cloak, then went to Uhud. When the Muslims saw him, they said to him, "Welcome, O Amr! We have become Muslims." He responded, "I have indeed embraced Islam." He fought and was injured, then was brought to his family. Sa'd ibn Muadh came to him and asked, "Did you come out of anger for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, or to protect your people?" He replied, "No, I came out of anger for the sake of Allah and His Messenger." Abu Hurairah reported, "He entered Jannah, and he did not perform a prayer except for the Muslims."

[Machine] The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was killed by an enemy. They noticed a group of Muslims and one man from them approached, known as Ghawrath bin al-Harith, until he stood over the head of the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with a sword. The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, asked, "Who can prevent you from me?" He replied, "Allah." The sword then fell from his hand, and the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, took it and asked, "Who can prevent you?" He replied, "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that I am the messenger of Allah." The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "I will make a covenant with you that I will not fight you and I will not be with a people who fight against you." The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then let him go. He returned to his people and said, "I have come to you from the best of people." When the time for prayer came, the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, performed the prayer of fear. The people were divided into two groups: one group facing the enemy, and another group praying with the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He prayed two units of prayer with those who were with him, then they left and took their positions against the enemy. The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, then prayed two units of prayer with the other group. So the people prayed two units of prayer, while the prophet, peace be upon him, prayed four units of prayer.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out on expeditions and encountered the polytheists at Usfan. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Dhuhr prayer, they saw him bowing and prostrating, as well as his companions. Some of them said to others, "This is an opportunity for you to deceive them so they do not know who you are until you attack them." One of them said, "They have another prayer that is more beloved to them than their families and wealth. Prepare yourselves until you attack them during that prayer." So Allah, the Almighty and Glorious, revealed to His Prophet ﷺ from {And when you are among them and lead them in prayer} until the end of the verse, and He informed him of what the polytheists planned. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Asr prayer and the Muslims were facing him in the direction of the Qibla, the Prophet ﷺ placed the Muslims behind him in two rows, and he said the takbeer, so they also said it with him. He mentioned the prayer during times of fear and at the end of it, when the polytheists looked at him, some of them prostrated while others stood and looked at them. They said, "They have been informed of what we intended."

When the ditch was dug, I saw Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) feeling very hungry. I came to my wife and said to her: Is there anything with you? I have seen Messenger of Allah ﷺ feeling extremely hungry. She brought out a bag of provisions which contained a sa', of barley. We had also with us a lamb. I slaughtered it. She ground the flour. She finished (this work) along with me. I cut it into pieces and put it in the earthen pot and then returned to Allah's Apostle ﷺ (for inviting him). She said: Do not humiliate me in the presence of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those who are with him. When I came to him I whispered to him saying: Messenger of Allah, we have slaughtered a lamb for you and she has ground a sa' of barley which we had with us. So you come along with a group of people with you. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said loudly: O people of the ditch, Jabir has arranged a feast for you, so (come along). Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not remove your earthen pot from the hearth and do not bake the bread from the kneaded flour until I come. So I came and Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and he was ahead of the people; and I came to my wife and she said (to me): You will be humbled. I said: I did what you had asked me to do. She (his wife) said: I brought out the kneaded flour and Messenger of Allah ﷺ put some saliva of his in that and blessed It. He then put saliva in the earthen pot and blessed it and then said. Call another baker who can bake with you. and bring out the soup from it, but do not remove it from the hearth, and the guests were one thousand. (Jabir said): I take an oath by Allah that all of them ate (the food to their fill) until they left it and went away and our earthen pot was brimming over as before, and so was the case with our flour, or as Dahhak (another narrator) said: It (the flour) was in the same condition and loaves had been prepared from that. [Machine] On the night of the Confederates, there were only twelve men left with the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was sitting in the cold and he said, "O son of Yemen, get up and go to the camp of the Confederates and see their situation." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I only came to you out of shyness from you because of the cold." He said, "Go forward with determination, O son of Yemen, and the morning cold will not harm you until you come back to me." So I went to their camp and I found Abu Sufyan kindling a fire among a group of people who had separated from the Confederates. He continued, "When I sat among them, Abu Sufyan thought that someone had entered their camp who did not belong to them. So he told everyone to hold the hand of the person sitting next to them." I struck the hand of the person on my right with my hand and held his hand, then I struck the hand of the person on my left with my hand and held his hand. I remained with them for a while, then I stood up and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was standing in prayer. He motioned to me with his hand to come closer, so I approached. Then he motioned to me again to come closer, so I approached until he poured some of the cloth he was wearing on me while he was praying. When he finished his prayer, he said, "O son of Yemen, sit down. What is the news?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, the people have separated from Abu Sufyan, and only a group remains who are kindling the fire. Allah has poured on them the like of the cold that He poured on us, but we hope for from Allah what they do not hope for."

[Machine] "He, Ali, O Amr, you had made a pact with Allah on behalf of Quraysh that no man should invite another man except for one of the two shall be accepted. And so, Amr said, 'Yes.' Then Ali said to him, 'Verily, I invite you to Allah, the Almighty, and to His Messenger ﷺ and to Islam.' Amr replied, 'I have no need for that.' Ali then said, 'Indeed, I invite you to combat.' Amr said, 'O my nephew, why?' Ali replied, 'By Allah, I do not wish to kill you, but I wish for you to kill me.' So Amr became furious and charged at Ali with his horse, but Ali struck the horse and killed it. Amr then approached Ali and said, 'Who will duel with me?' Ali stood up, with his face covered in armor, and said, 'I am the one, O Prophet of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ allowed him and Ali went towards him saying, 'Do not rush, for there has come to you an answer. Your voice is not weak, and you are knowledgeable and perceptive. And truth is the salvation for every victor. I do hope to avenge upon you a blow that would remain remembered. Amr asked, 'Who are you?' Ali replied, 'I am Ali.' Amr asked, 'The son of whom?' Ali said, 'I am Ali ibn Abi Talib.' Amr then said, 'You have with you, O my nephew, some of your maternal uncles who are better than you. Leave and I do not wish to shed your blood.' Ali replied, 'By Allah, I do not mind shedding your blood.' So Amr became angry, dismounted from his horse, and drew his sword as if it were a flaming torch. He approached Ali in anger, while Ali faced him with his shield. Amr struck at Ali's shield but it fell and remained stuck with his sword. He struck at Ali's head, cutting through it, and Ali struck him on the neck, causing him to fall down. The infidels then made a commotion and the Prophet ﷺ heard the takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and knew that Ali had killed him. Ali then said, 'I am certain that the cavalry will attack in the same manner as I and they will delay my companions today. I am determined and vigilant in my resolve, with no other comrade but Ibn Abd. When I approached him, I swore and summoned them to listen to my recitation from the Book. I am indeed truthful, for I affirm those who exclaim righteousness, two men who strike all opponents. I have with me, a stick between branches, an uncomplaining trunk, tainted by his thoughtlessness. And I worship the Lord of Muhammad, with correctness. Ali then turned towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a beaming face. Umar ibn Khattab said to him, 'Why don't you take his armor? For there is no better armor for the Arabs than that.' Ali replied, 'I struck him, fearing him and being shy of my cousin, to take his armor. I left his horses defeated until they were thrown into the trench.'

[Machine] Narrated by Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was with her when a man from the household greeted us while we were in the house. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stood up abruptly and I followed him. Then, I saw the dog's barking and the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "This is Gabriel who has commanded me to go to the Banu Qurayzah tribe." He said, "You have put down your weapons, but we have not sought the idolaters until we reached the "asad al-Hamra" (a specific place)." This happened when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, returned from the Battle of the Trench. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stood up abruptly and said to his companions, "I have determined that you should not pray the Asr prayer until you have reached the Banu Qurayzah tribe." The sun had set before they could reach them. Some of the Muslims said, "The Prophet did not intend to abandon the prayer, so let us pray it." Some of the Muslims said, "We are determined to follow the Prophet, peace be upon him, and we are free from sin." Some of them prayed with faith and seeking reward, while others refrained. The Prophet, peace be upon him, did not blame anyone from the two groups. Then, the Prophet, peace be upon him, went out and passed by their gathering place to the Banu Qurayzah tribe and asked them, "Has anyone passed by you?" They said, "A dog's barking passed by us on a grayish mule with a saddle made of wool." He said, "That was not a dog's barking, but it was Gabriel who was sent to the Banu Qurayzah tribe to disturb and instill fear in their hearts." The Prophet, peace be upon him, besieged them and ordered his companions to hide behind the rocks until they could hear his words. He called them, "O brothers of monkeys and pigs." They responded, "O Abal-Qasim, was it necessary to use this harsh term?" He besieged them until they surrendered to the judgment of Sa’d bin Mu’adh. They were ordered to be killed and their wealth, children, and women were taken as captives.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Abu Bakr, so we fought against some people from the Banu Fazara tribe. When we approached a well, Abu Bakr commanded us to water the horses, so we did. After we performed the Fajr prayer, Abu Bakr ordered us to launch a surprise attack. We killed those whom we had to, and some of them ran away. Among them were children and women who were trying to seek refuge in the mountains. We shot arrows between them and the mountains, and when they saw the arrows, they stopped. I then brought them, including a woman from the Banu Fazara tribe who had a daughter with her, to Abu Bakr. The woman had reddish hair and was considered one of the most beautiful Arab women. Abu Bakr said to me, "O Salamah, give me that woman." I replied, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I did not expose her to anything while she belonged to you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent her to Makkah as a ransom for some Muslim prisoners who were in the hands of the polytheists. "A Muslim prisoner took her out of Makkah in a different context." (This hadith is narrated by Muslim in his collection.)

[Machine] When it was the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man, but he returned unsuccessful. Then Muhammad ibn Maslamah came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have never seen a day like today. Mahmoud ibn Maslamah has been killed." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety, for you do not know what difficulties you will face with them. When you meet them, say, 'O Allah, You are our Lord and their Lord, our Leader and their Leader. We ask You to protect us from them and to protect them from our evil. You only kill them by Your command. Then sit on the ground and when they advance towards you, get up and say 'Allahu Akbar'." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. He does not retreat, and Allah will grant him victory with his own hands." The people were honored by this, and Ali stood up that day as a soldier. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Keep it a secret." Ali said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot see any place to put it." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat into his eyes and tied it for him, then gave him the banner. Ali asked, "O Messenger of Allah, why shall I fight them?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So that they witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they do so, they have protected themselves from shedding their blood and losing their wealth, except for what is rightfully due, and their account is with Allah." Ali met them and Allah granted him victory. The two sheikhs agreed upon the narration of the banner but did not mention it in this context.
