26. Book of Expeditions (2/3)

٢٦۔ كِتَابُ الْمَغَازِي وَالسَّرَايَا ص ٢

[Machine] Narrated to us Al-Hakim Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Hafiz, dictation in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, in the year 401:

The book includes the biography of the Maghazi (battles) and the Saraya (expeditions), as well as other events and the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The two shaykhs (referring to Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim) agreed on what is authentic in this book. It contains many narrations attributed to Abu Zubair, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Muslim alone stood out in compiling these narrations, and there are few remaining narrations that are reliable from sources other than him.

[Machine] "We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Khaibar to Wadi Al-Qura, and with him was a young boy he had received as a gift from Rifa'ah bin Zaid Al-Hizami. While he was taking off the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the setting sun in the background, an arrow from the west came to him and killed him. It was the arrow that no one knew who shot it. We said to him, 'Congratulations to him for Paradise.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if it struck him now, he would be burned by it in the fire, its heat being equivalent to the expiation of Muslims on the day of Khaibar.' Then a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in haste when he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying that. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I suffered the pain of two thorns in my shoes.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The same will be done to you in the Hellfire.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions continued on the year of the conquest until they reached Marr Al-Zuhra with ten thousand Muslims. Sulaym and Muzaynah were there, and in every tribe there was a number of people who had embraced Islam. The Muhajirun (emigrants) and the Ansar (helpers) were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and none of them stayed behind. The news about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became unknown to the Quraysh, and they did not receive any information about what he was doing. Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Thaniyyat al-Aqabah on the way from Makkah to Madinah, and they sought permission to enter. Umm Salamah spoke to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is your cousin, the son of your aunt, and your son-in-law." He replied, "I have no need for them. As for my cousin, he has violated my honour, and as for my aunt's son and my son-in-law, he was the one who said to me in Makkah what he said." When the news reached them, Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith had a son who said, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah will either give permission for me, or I will take his son by the hand, and we will go away and die of thirst or hunger." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about this, he sent for them, and they entered upon him. Abu Sufyan began reciting poetry about his Islam and his apology for what had happened in the past. He said, "By your life, on the day I carry a flag, the horses of al-Lat will defeat the horses of Muhammad, even if the dark night lasts long. This is the time for truth to guide and direct me. So tell Ta'if that I do not seek to fight them, and tell Ta'if that I am ready for them, guided by someone other than myself, who has guided me to Allah. I will flee quickly and strive to fight against Muhammad, even if I am not related to him. They are a group of people who do not follow their desires, even if they are intelligent and logical." He continued, "I desire for them to be pleased with me, and I will not leave them until I have been guided in every sitting. I was not in the army that gained victory, nor did my tongue bring any good, nor did my hands touch any tribe that came from distant lands, with arrows and swords. Indeed, the one you expelled and insulted will strive hard to seek revenge, not restrained by custom." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard Abu Sufyan recite poetry about himself, he struck him in the chest and said, "You are the one who expelled and insulted me." Ibn Ishaq mentioned, "The mother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while she was visiting her relatives from the Banu Najjar tribe."

On the day of the conquest of Mecca, Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn AbuSarh hid himself with Uthman ibn Affan. He brought him and made him stand before the Prophet ﷺ, and said: Accept the allegiance of Abdullah, Messenger of Allah! He raised his head and looked at him three times, refusing him each time, but accepted his allegiance after the third time. Then turning to his companions, he said: Was not there a wise man among you who would stand up to him when he saw that I had withheld my hand from accepting his allegiance, and kill him? They said: We did not know what you had in your heart, Messenger of Allah! Why did you not give us a signal with your eye? He said: It is not advisable for a Prophet to play deceptive tricks with the eyes. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4359)

Abdullah ibn AbuSarh used to write (the revelation) for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Satan made him slip, and he joined the infidels. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to kill him on the day of Conquest (of Mecca). Uthman ibn Affan sought protection for him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him protection. [Machine] When it was the year of conquest, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ settled in Dhua Tuwa, Abu Quhafa said to his youngest daughter, who was his most precious child to me above Abu Qubays, that his sight had become weak, so I was taking care of him. He said, "O my daughter, what do you see?" She said, "I see a gathering of blackness, and I see a man running in front of that blackness." He said, "Those are the horses, O my daughter." Then he said, "What else do you see?" She said, "I see the blackness spreading." He said, "In that case, by Allah, the horses have been pushed back. So hurry with me to my house." So I quickly took him until we reached the bottom of the valley. There was a collar made of leaves around its neck, and a person cut it from its neck. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque, Abu Bakr came out until he brought his father to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said, "Why didn't you leave the old man in his house until I came to him?" He said, "He insists on coming to you, O Messenger of Allah. He walks towards you, and he has more right to do so than for you to walk towards him." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat him down in front of him, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped his chest and said, "Submit, you will be safe." So he embraced Islam, then Abu Bakr stood up and took his sister by the hand and said, "I swear by Allah, I bear witness, by Allah and Islam, to the collar of my sister. By Allah, no one has come with anything like it." Then he said a second time, "I swear by Allah, I bear witness, by Allah and Islam, to the collar of my sister. By Allah, no one has come with anything like it." Then he said, "O my sister, count your collar." By Allah, truly, trustworthiness among people is rare.

[Machine] "My father, Abu Qilabah, is still alive. Have you not met him to hear from him? So, I met Umar and he narrated to me. He said, we were in the gathering of the people, and the travelers used to pass by us. We would ask them about this matter and what it meant for the people. They would say, there is a prophet who claims that Allah has sent him and that Allah has revealed to him such and such. The Arabs blamed themselves for not embracing Islam earlier and they said, let us wait until he appears, and if he does, then he is a prophet, so believe in him. After the conquest of Mecca, every group quickly embraced Islam and rushed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . They came to him and stayed with him. Then he came to us and we met him. He said, 'I have come to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the truth, and indeed he "commands you to do such and such, and when the prayer is due, let one of you call the Adhan and lead you in prayer, the one among you who has the most knowledge of the Quran.' So, they looked and could not find anyone among them who had more knowledge of the Quran than me, so they made me their Imam, and I was seven or six years old. I used to perform Salah and when I would prostrate, my garment would become tight on me. A woman from our neighborhood would say, 'Cover your reciter for us.' He said, 'So I would scrunch up my garment, from the scrunching of the people of Yemen, for six or seven Dirhams, and nothing would make me happier than that, just as being happy with that.' [Machine] On the day of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called out to the Ansar and said, "O people of the Ansar!" They responded, "We are at your service, O Messenger of Allah, by our fathers and our mothers." He said, "Turn your faces towards Allah and His Messenger, and He will admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow." So they turned and there they were in the valley of Hunayn, fighting fiercely until Allah granted them victory over the disbelievers.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Hunain after he had finished conquering Makkah. He gathered the wealth of Malik ibn Awf al-Nasri from the Banu Nasr, and Jusham and Sa'd ibn Bakr and Awza' from the Banu Hilal, and some people from the Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf. He also gathered the Ahlaf from the Thaqif and the Banu Malik. Then he went with them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , along with the wealth, women, and children. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about them, he sent 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami and said, "Go and enter among the people to learn about their knowledge for us." So he entered and stayed among them for a day or two, then he came back and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the matter. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, "Do you not hear what Ibn Abi Hadrad is saying?" 'Umar replied, "Ibn Abi Hadrad is lying." Ibn Abi Hadrad then said, "If you accuse me of lying, perhaps you accuse someone better than me of lying." 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Ibn Abi Hadrad is saying?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O 'Umar, you were indeed lost, and Allah, the Almighty, guided you." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to Safwan ibn Umayyah and asked him for a hundred suits of armor and everything that is useful about them. Safwan asked, "By force, O Muhammad?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, it is a loan until we return it to you." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and this hadith is authentic and they did not mention it.

[Machine] From Abu Salamah al-Bahili, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , from Ubada bin As-Samit who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took on the day of Hunayn a share and a portion of the booty from a camel. Then he said, "O people, indeed it is not permissible for me to take from what Allah has bestowed upon you to the extent of this except the fifth, and the fifth is to be returned to you. So pay the thread and the needle, and beware of belittling even though it may be a rope. Indeed, it will be a burden on its people on the Day of Resurrection. And upon you is to strive in the cause of Allah, for it is a door among the doors of Paradise through which Allah removes distress and grief."

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Tabuk, he would frequently stay behind, and the people would say, "O Messenger of Allah, so and so has stayed behind." He would reply, "Leave him, if there is any good in him, Allah will bring him to you, and if there is no good in him, then Allah has saved you from him." This continued until it was said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Dharr has stayed behind and his camel is slow." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave him, if there is any good in him, Allah will bring him to you, and if there is no good in him, then Allah has saved you from him." Abu Dharr blamed his camel for being slow, so he took his belongings and placed them on its back and started walking to catch up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in one of his houses and a Muslim saw a man walking on the road and said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "O Messenger of Allah, there is a man walking on the road." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is Abu Dharr." When the people recognized him, they said, "By Allah, it is indeed Abu Dharr!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, dies alone, and will be resurrected alone." Time went on and Abu Dharr reached Rabadhah, and when death approached him, he advised his wife and slave, "When I die, wash me, shroud me, then carry me and place me on the side of the road. The first caravan that passes by, say, 'This is Abu Dharr.' When I die, do as I have instructed." When Abu Dharr passed away, they did as they were told. A group of people passed by, unaware of Abu Dharr's death, and their rides nearly trampled his body. Then Ibn Mas'ud came in a group from the people of Kufa and they asked, "What is this?" They were told, "It is the funeral of Abu Dharr." Ibn Mas'ud started to cry and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke the truth, may Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, dies alone, and will be resurrected alone." Then he descended from his camel until he reached him and his group covered him with dirt. [Machine] "About Ali? This is the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque, and this is the house of Ali. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Bakr and Umar with a letter of pardon to the people of Mecca. They set out and suddenly they saw someone riding. They asked, 'Who is this?' He replied, 'I am Ali, O Abu Bakr, give me the book that you have.' Abu Bakr asked, 'What do I have to do with it?' Ali said, 'By Allah, I only know goodness from it.' So Ali took the book and went with it, while Abu Bakr and Umar returned to the city of Medina. They asked the Prophet, 'What do we have, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'You have nothing but goodness, but it was said to me that no one should convey from you except you or a man from you.'"

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Abu Bakr ordering him to announce these statements. Then 'Ali followed him. When Abu Bakr was at a particular road, he heard the heavy breathing of Al-Qiswa, the she camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so Abu Bakr appeared frightened because he thought that it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he saw that it was 'Ali, he gave him the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and told 'Ali to announce the statements. So he left to perform Hajj. During the day of At-Tashriq 'Ali stood to announce: 'The protection of Allah and His Messenger is removed from every idolater. So travel in the land for four months. There is to be no idolater performing Hajj after this year, nor may anyone perform Tawaf around the House while naked. None shall enter Paradise but a believer.' 'Ali was making the announcement, so when he became exhausted Abu Bakr would announce it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3091)

[Machine] "O Abu Abdurrahman, there are people here who are reciting from the recitation of Musaylimah." Abdullah said, "Is there a book other than the Book of Allah or a Messenger other than the Messenger of Allah after the Prophet of Islam?" He then brought him after him and said, "O Abdullah, by the One besides whom there is no god, they are in the house reciting from the recitation of Musaylimah, and they have with them a Quran that has the recitation of Musaylimah. This occurred during the time of Uthman. Abdullah said to the group of horsemen, "Go until you surround the house and capture everyone inside." They did so and brought him eighty men. Abdullah said to them, "Woe to you, is there a book other than the Book of Allah or a Messenger other than the Messenger of Allah?" They replied, "We repent to Allah, for we have indeed wronged." Abdullah left without fighting them and marched them towards Sham (Syria) under the leadership of Ibn An-Nawwaha. He refused to repent, so Abdullah said to the horseman, "Go and strike his neck and throw his head near his mother's grave, for I see that she knows of his actions." So he did as Abdullah commanded. This narration is authentic.

[Machine] The sons of Saad ibn Bakr, Dimam ibn Tha'laba, were sent to the Messenger of Allah. They came to us and I tied their camel at the gate of the mosque. Then they entered upon the Messenger of Allah, who was sitting in the mosque with his companions. He asked them, "Which one of you is the son of Abdul-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "I am the son of Abdul-Muttalib." He said, "Muhammad?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "Yes." He said, "O Muhammad, I have a question for you, and I am persistent in it. Do not find me offensive. For I do not find it in myself." He said, "Ask about what you have in mind." He said, "I ask you by Allah, your God, the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah send you to us as a messenger?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "By Allah, yes." He said, "I ask you by Allah, your God, the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah command you that we worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, and that we reject these idols and false gods that our forefathers used to worship?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "By Allah, yes." Then he began mentioning the obligations of Islam, one by one, starting with prayer, then zakah, fasting, and Hajj, reciting them after each obligation, just as he recited them before. When he finished, he said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are His servant and messenger. I will fulfill these obligations and avoid what you have prohibited me from doing. I will not increase or decrease in them." Then he turned around and returned to his camel. The Messenger of Allah said as he was leaving, "If the two idols are truthful, he will enter Paradise." Dimam was a tall, hairy man with prominent shoulders. He came with his camel and released its reins until he came to his people. They gathered around him and the first thing he said was cursing Lat and Uzza. They said, "What is wrong with you, O Dimam? Beware of leprosy, madness, and insanity!" He said, "Woe to you! By Allah, neither of them can harm or benefit. Allah has sent a messenger and revealed a book to you, which has saved you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded you and what he has forbidden you. By Allah, not a single man or woman in the city today is not a Muslim." Ibn Abbas said, "We have not heard of a group coming that was better than Dimam ibn Tha'laba. [Machine] Narrated Abu Muayhibah, who was a guardian of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke me up one night and said, 'O Abu Muayhibah, go and seek forgiveness, for I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of Baqi' (the graveyard in Medina).' So I went with him. When we reached Baqi', he said, 'Peace be upon you, O people of Baqi', may what you are in this morning be good for you. If you knew what Allah has saved you from, the trials would have approached you like thick darkness following after darkness. Then he said, 'O Abu Muayhibah, Allah has chosen for me to be given the treasures of the earth, eternal life in it, and then Paradise, and the meeting with my Lord Almighty.' I said, 'May I be your sacrifice, both my parents are offered to you. Take the keys of the treasures of this earth, and eternal life in it, then Paradise.' He said, 'No, O Abu Muayhibah, I have chosen to meet my Lord Almighty.' Then he sought forgiveness for the people of Baqi' and left. When he began the prayer in the morning, he would begin his prayer by complaining about that day when he was taken (from this world)." (Source: Al-Bukhari)

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the angels, who were able to hear but not see, offered their condolences saying, "Peace be upon you, O people of the house, and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Surely, there is comfort in Allah for every hardship and there is a substitute for every loss. So have faith in Allah and rely on Him. Have hope, for the ones who are deprived are the ones who are deprived of rewards. Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you."

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, his companions surrounded him and cried. They gathered together and a man with a prominent beard and a broad chest came in. He stood over them and cried, then turned to the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Verily, in Allah, there is consolation for every calamity, compensation for every loss, and a successor for every deceased. So turn to Allah and seek His help, and look at you in times of difficulty. For indeed, the true affliction is the one who is not patient and does not seek refuge." Some of them asked each other, "Do you know this man?" Abu Bakr and Ali said, "Yes, this is the brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Al-Khidr, peace be upon him. He is a witness to what has happened, even though 'Abbad ibn Abdus-Samad is not a condition for this book." This is a witness to what has been mentioned before.
