[AI] They said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "What do you say about these prisoners?" So Abd Allah bin Rawaha said, "Come into a valley with a lot of firewood, then set a fire and throw them into it." Al-Abbas said, "May Allah have mercy on you! O Messenger of Allah!" Umar said, "Their leaders and chiefs fought against you and denied you, so strike their necks." Abu Bakr said, "These are your relatives and people." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered to fulfill one of his needs, so a group of people said, "What did Umar say?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said, "What do you say about them? Indeed, the example of these people is like the example of a group of brothers before them. (Allah) said, '[Noah said], 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.'" (Quran 26) And (Moses) said, 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts.' (Quran 10) And (Abraham) said, 'Then whoever follows me - he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.'" (Quran 14) And (Jesus) said, 'If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.'" (Quran 5) And you are a people who have a weakness, so no one among you will be spared except by a ransom or by a blow to the neck." Abd Allah said, "Except Suhail bin Bayda, as he should not be killed, and I have heard him speaking about Islam." So he kept silent. That day was the most fearful day for me, when I feared that stones would rain down on me from the sky, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Except Suhail bin Bayda."

لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا تَقُولُونَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْأُسَارَى» فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ ايْتِ فِي وَادٍ كَثِيرِ الْحَطَبِ فَأَضْرِمْ نَارًا ثُمَّ أَلْقِهِمْ فِيهَا فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ قَطَعَ اللَّهُ رَحِمَكَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ قَادَتُهُمْ وَرُءُسَاؤُهُمْ قَاتَلُوكَ وَكَذَّبُوكَ فَاضْرِبْ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ بَعْدُ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَشِيرَتُكَ وَقَوْمُكَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِبَعْضِ حَاجَتِهِ فَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ الْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ عُمَرُ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا تَقُولُونَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ؟ إِنَّ مَثَلَ هَؤُلَاءِ كَمَثَلِ إِخْوَةٍ لَهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ {قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا} [نوح 26] وَقَالَ مُوسَى {رَبَّنَا اطْمِسْ عَلَى أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ} [يونس 88] الْآيَةَ وَقَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ {فَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} [إبراهيم 36] وَقَالَ عِيسَى {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ} [المائدة 118] وَأَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ فِيكُمْ غِيلَةٌ فَلَا يَنْقَلِبَنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا بِفِدَاءٍ أَوْ بِضَرْبِ عُنُقٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَقُلْتُ إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُقْتَلُ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْإِسْلَامِ فَسَكَتَ فَمَا كَانَ يَوْمٌ أَخْوَفُ عِنْدِي أَنْ يُلْقَى عَلَيَّ حِجَارَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِنْ يَوْمِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ»

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ صحيح

I was sitting with Ibn Abbas and he made me sit on his sitting place. He requested me to stay with him in order that he might give me a share from his property. So I stayed with him for two months. Once he told (me) that when the delegation of the tribe of 'Abdul Qais came to the Prophet, the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "Who are the people (i.e. you)? (Or) who are the delegate?" They replied, "We are from the tribe of Rabi'a." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Welcome! O people (or O delegation of 'Abdul Qais)! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We cannot come to you except in the sacred month and there is the infidel tribe of Mudar intervening between you and us. So please order us to do something good (religious deeds) so that we may inform our people whom we have left behind (at home), and that we may enter Paradise (by acting on them)." Then they asked about drinks (what is legal and what is illegal). The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to do four things and forbade them from four things.

He ordered them to believe in Allah Alone and asked them, "Do you know what is meant by believing in Allah Alone?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "It means: 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ. 2. To offer prayers perfectly 3. To pay the Zakat (obligatory charity) 4. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. 5. And to pay Al-Khumus (one fifth of the booty to be given in Allah's Cause).

Then he forbade them four things, namely, Hantam, Dubba,' Naqir Ann Muzaffat or Muqaiyar; (These were the names of pots in which Alcoholic drinks were prepared) (The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the container of wine and he meant the wine itself). The Prophet ﷺ further said (to them): "Memorize them (these instructions) and convey them to the people whom you have left behind."

وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ: عَنِ الْحَنْتَمِ وَالدُّبَّاءِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ، وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: الْمُقَيَّرِ، وَقَالَ: «احْفَظُوهُنَّ وَأَخْبِرُوا بِهِنَّ مَنْ وَرَاءَكُمْ»

I said to Ibn ʿAbbas, "I have an earthenware pot containing Nabidh (i.e. water and dates or grapes) for me, and I drink of it while it is sweet. If I drink much of it and stay with the people for a long time, I get afraid that they may discover it (for I will appear as if I were drunk). Ibn ʿAbbas said, "A delegation of ʿAbdul Qais came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Welcome, O people! Neither will you have disgrace nor will you regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! There are the Mudar pagans between you and us, so we cannot come to you except in the sacred Months. So please teach us some orders on acting upon which we will enter Paradise. Besides, we will preach that to our people who are behind us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I order you to do four things and forbid you from four things (I order you): To believe in Allah...Do you know what is to believe in Allah? That is to testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah: (I order you also to offer prayers perfectly to pay Zakat; and to fast the month of Ramadan and to give the Khumus (i.e. one-fifth of the booty) (for Allah's Sake). I forbid you from four other things (i.e. the wine that is prepared in) Ad-Dubba, An-Naquir, Az-Hantam and Al-Muzaffat. (See Hadith No. 50 Vol. 1)

I was an interpreter between Ibn Abbas and the people, that a woman happened to come there and asked about nabidh or the pitcher of wine. He replied: A delegation of the people of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He (the Holy Prophet) asked the delegation or the people (of the delegation about their identity). They replied that they belonged to the tribe of Rabi'a. He (the Holy Prophet) welcomed the people or the delegation which were neither humiliated nor put to shame. They (the members of the delegation) said: Messenger of Allah, we come to you from a far-off distance and there lives between you and us a tribe of the unbelievers of Mudar and, therefore, it is not possible for us to come to you except in the sacred months. Thus direct us to a clear command, about which we should inform people beside us and by which we may enter heaven. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: I command you to do four deeds and forbid you to do four (acts), and added: I direct you to affirm belief in Allah alone, and then asked them: Do you know what belief in Allah really implies? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet said: It implies testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, fast of Ramadan, that you pay one-fifth of the booty (fallen to your lot) and I forbid you to use gourd, wine jar, or a receptacle for wine. Shu'ba sometimes narrated the word naqir (wooden pot) and sometimes narrated it as muqayyar. The Prophet also said: Keep it in your mind and inform those who have been left behind.

That people from the- tribe of 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, we belong to the tribe of Rabi'a and there live between you and us the unbelievers of the Mudar tribe and we find it impossible to come to you except in the sacred months; direct us to a deed which we must communicate to those who have been left behind us and by doing which we may enter heaven. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I enjoin upon you four (things) and forbid you to do four (things): worship Allah and associate none with Him, establish prayer, pay Zakat, and observe the fast of Ramadan, and pay the fifth part out of the booty. And I prohibit you from four (things): dry gourds, green-coloured jars, hollowed stumps of palm-trees, and receptacles. They (the members of the delegation) said: Do you know what al-naqir is? He replied: Yes, it is a stump which you hollow out and in which you throw small dates. Sa'id said: He (the Holy Prophet) used the word tamar (dates). (The Prophet then added): Then you sprinkle water over it and when its ebullition subsides, you drink it (and you are so intoxicated) that one amongst you, or one amongst them (the other members of your tribe, who were not present there) strikes his cousin with the sword. He (the narrator) said: There was a man amongst us who had sustained injury on this very account due to (intoxication), and he told that he tried to conceal it out of shame from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I, however, inquired from the Messenger of Allah (it we discard those utensils which you have forbidden us to use), then what type of vessels should be used for drink? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: In the waterskin the mouths of which are tied (with a string). They (again) said: Prophet of Allah, our land abounds in rats and water-skins cannot remain preserved. The holy Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: (Drink in water-skins) even if these arenibbled by rats. And then (addressing) al-Ashajj of 'Abdul-Qais he said: Verily, you possess two such qualities which Allah loves: insight and deliberateness.

مسلم:١٨أحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ

حَدَّثَنَا مَنْ لَقِيَ الْوَفْدَ الَّذِينَ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ وَذَكَرَ قَتَادَةُ أَبَا نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ هَذَا أَنَّ أُنَاسًا مِنْ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّا حَىٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارُ مُضَرَ وَلاَ نَقْدِرُ عَلَيْكَ إِلاَّ فِي أَشْهُرِ الْحُرُمِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ نَأْمُرُ بِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا وَنَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَخَذْنَا بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاَةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَأَعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنَ الْغَنَائِمِ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ وَالنَّقِيرِ قَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ مَا عِلْمُكَ بِالنَّقِيرِ قَالَ بَلَى جِذْعٌ تَنْقُرُونَهُ فَتَقْذِفُونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُطَيْعَاءِ قَالَ سَعِيدٌ أَوْ قَالَ مِنَ التَّمْرِ ثُمَّ تَصُبُّونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا سَكَنَ غَلَيَانُهُ شَرِبْتُمُوهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ أَوْ إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ لَيَضْرِبُ ابْنَ عَمِّهِ بِالسَّيْفِ قَالَ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَتْهُ جِرَاحَةٌ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ أَخْبَأُهَا حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ فَفِيمَ نَشْرَبُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فِي أَسْقِيَةِ الأَدَمِ الَّتِي يُلاَثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا كَثِيرَةُ الْجِرْذَانِ وَلاَ تَبْقَى بِهَا أَسْقِيَةُ الأَدَمِ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهَا الْجِرْذَانُ قَالَ وَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِنَّ فِيكَ لَخَصْلَتَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللَّهُ الْحِلْمُ وَالأَنَاةُ

On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at his companions and they were three hundred and some, then he looked at the mushrikeen and saw that they were one thousand or more. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ turned to face the qiblah, then he stretched forth his hands, wearing his upper and lower garment, and he said: “O Allah, where is Your promise to me? O Allah, accomplish for me what You have promised me! O Allah, if this small band of Muslims is destroyed, You will never be worshipped on earth.” He kept beseeching his Lord, calling out to Him, until his upper garment fell from his shoulders. Abu Bakr came to him, picked up his upper garment and put it on him. Then he embraced him from behind and said: O Prophet of Allah, this prayer of yours to your Lord will suffice, for He will accomplish for you what He has promised to you. Then Allah revealed the words: ʿ(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): ‘I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in successionʿ [al Anfal 8:9). On that day when the armies met (in battle), Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, defeated the mushrikeen; seventy of their men were killed and seventy were taken captive. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr, 'Ali and 'Umar ؓ م (concerning the prisoners). Abu Bakr said: O Prophet of Allah, they are our cousins, kinsmen and brothers, I think that you should accept a ransom for them, which will strengthen us against the kuffar, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam and they will become a support to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What do you think, O son of al-Khattab?ʿ I said: No, by Allah. I do not think as Abu Bakr thinks. I think that you should hand. So and so ­ a relative of ʼUmar's- ­ over to me so that I may strike his neck. You should hand ‘Aqeel over to ‘Ali so that he may strike his neck, and you should hand over So and so to Hamzah (his brother) so that he may strike his neck, so that Allah will know that we have no mercy in our hearts towards the mushrikeen; these are their prominent figures and leaders. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ inclined towards the view of Abu Bakr, and he did not incline towards what I said, and accepted ransoms from them. The next day, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and found him with Abu Bakr, and they were both weeping I said: O Messenger of Allah , tell me why you and your companion are weeping. If I find it is a cause for weeping, I will weep too, and is it is not, then I will make myself weep with you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿI am weeping because of what your companions suggested about accepting a ransom for the prisoners. I have been shown your punishment as close as this treeʿ ­ a tree that was close to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ Then Allah revealed the words:ʿIt is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter. And Allah is Almighty, All Wise. Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took ʿ[al Anfal 8:67­-68] ­ i.e., referring to the ransom. Then booty was permitted to them, and when the day of Uhud came the following year, they were punished for what they had done of taking the ransom on the day of Badr. Seventy of them were killed and the Companions of the Prophet deserted him, his front tooth was broken and the helmet on his head was broken, and blood flowed down his face, and Allah revealed the words: “When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: 'From where does this come to us?ʿSay (to them), ‘It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds).' And Allah has power over all things” [Al 'Imran 3:165]

نَظَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَهُمْ ثَلاثُ مِائَةٍ وَنَيِّفٌ وَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَإِذَا هُمْ أَلْفٌ وَزِيَادَةٌ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْقِبْلَةَ ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِ رِدَاؤُهُ وَإِزَارُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ أَيْنَ مَا وَعَدْتَنِي؟ اللهُمَّ أَنْجِزْ مَا وَعَدْتَنِي اللهُمَّ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تُهْلِكْ هَذِهِ الْعِصَابَةَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلامِ فَلا تُعْبَدْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَمَا زَالَ يَسْتَغِيثُ رَبَّهُ ﷻ وَيَدْعُوهُ حَتَّى سَقَطَ رِدَاؤُهُ فَأَتَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَخَذَ رِدَاءَهُ فَرَدَّاهُ ثُمَّ الْتَزَمَهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ كَذَاكَ مُنَاشَدَتُكَ رَبَّكَ فَإِنَّهُ سَيُنْجِزُ لَكَ مَا وَعَدَكَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُمْ بِأَلْفٍ مِّنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ} [الأنفال 9] فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُئِذٍ وَالْتَقَوْا فَهَزَمَ اللهُ ﷻ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا وَأُسِرَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا فَاسْتَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعَلِيًّا وَعُمَرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ هَؤُلاءِ بَنُو الْعَمِّ وَالْعَشِيرَةُ وَالْإِخْوَانُ فَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْهُمُ الْفِدْيَةَ فَيَكُونُ مَا أَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً لَنَا عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ وَعَسَى اللهُ أَنْ يَهْدِيَهُمْ فَيَكُونُونَ لَنَا عَضُدًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا تَرَى يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا أَرَى مَا رَأَى أَبُو بَكْرٍوَلَكِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تُمَكِّنَنِي مِنْ فُلانٍ قَرِيبًا لِعُمَرَ فَأَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ وَتُمَكِّنَ عَلِيًّا مِنْ عَقِيلٍ فَيَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ وَتُمَكِّنَ حَمْزَةَ مِنْ فُلانٍ أَخِيهِ فَيَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ حَتَّى يَعْلَمَ اللهُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِنَا هَوَادَةٌ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ هَؤُلاءِ صَنَادِيدُهُمْ وَأَئِمَّتُهُمْ وَقَادَتُهُمْ فَهَوِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَمْ يَهْوَ مَا قُلْتُ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمُ الْفِدَاءَفَلَمَّا أَنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ قَالَ عُمَرُ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَاعِدٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَإِذَا هُمَا يَبْكِيَانِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي مَاذَا يُبْكِيكَ أَنْتَ وَصَاحِبَكَ؟ فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُ بُكَاءً بَكَيْتُ وَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ بُكَاءً تَبَاكَيْتُ لِبُكَائِكُمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الَّذِي عَرَضَ عَلَيَّ أَصْحَابُكَ مِنَ الْفِدَاءِ لَقَدْ عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ عَذَابُكُمْ أَدْنَى مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ لِشَجَرَةٍ قَرِيبَةٍ وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ} إِلَى {لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ} [الأنفال 67 68] مِنَ الْفِدَاءِ ثُمَّ أُحِلَّ لَهُمُ الْغَنَائِمُفَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ أُحُدٍ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ عُوقِبُوا بِمَا صَنَعُوا يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ مِنْ أَخْذِهِمُ الْفِدَاءَ فَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ وَفَرَّ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَكُسِرَتْ رَبَاعِيَتُهُ وَهُشِمَتِ الْبَيْضَةُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَسَالَ الدَّمُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُّصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْأَنَّى هَذَا قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} [آل عمران 165] بِأَخْذِكُمُ الْفِدَاءَ

نَظَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَهُمْ ثَلاثُ مِائَةٍ وَنَيِّفٌ وَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَإِذَا هُمْ أَلْفٌ وَزِيَادَةٌ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْقِبْلَةَ ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَيهُ وَعَلَيْهِ رِدَاؤُهُ وَإِزَارُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ أَيْنَ مَا وَعَدْتَنِي؟ اللهُمَّ أَنْجِزْ مَا وَعَدْتَنِي اللهُمَّ إِنْ تُهْلِكْ هَذِهِ الْعِصَابَةَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلامِ فَلا تُعْبَدْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَمَا زَالَ يَسْتَغِيثُ رَبَّهُ وَيَدْعُوهُ حَتَّى سَقَطَ رِدَاؤُهُ فَأَتَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَخَذَ رِدَاءَهُ [فَرَدَّاهُ ثُمَّ الْتَزَمَهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ كَذَاكَ مُنَاشَدَتُكَ رَبَّكَ فَإِنَّهُ سَيُنْجِزُ لَكَ مَا وَعَدَكَ] وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُمْ بِأَلْفٍ مِّنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ} فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُئِذٍ وَالْتَقَوْا فَهَزَمَ اللهُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا وَأُسِرَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ رَجُلًا فَاسْتَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعَلِيًّا وَعُمَرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ هَؤُلَاءِ بَنُو الْعَمِّ وَالْعَشِيرَةُ وَالْإِخْوَانُ فَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْهُمُ الْفِدَاءَ فَيَكُونُ مَا أَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً لَنَا عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ وَعَسَى اللهُ أَنْ يَهْدِيَهُمْ فَيَكُونُونَ لَنَا عَضُدًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا تَرَى يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ؟ فَقَالَ قُلْتُ وَاللهِ مَا أَرَى مَا رَأَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَكِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تُمَكِّنَنِي مِنْ فُلانٍ قَرِيبٍ لِعُمَرَ فَأَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ وَتُمَكِّنَ عَلِيًّا مِنْ عَقِيلٍ فَيَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ وَتُمَكِّنَ حَمْزَةَ مِنْ فُلانٍ أَخِيهِ فَيَضْرِبَعُنُقَهُ حَتَّى يَعْلَمَ اللهُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِنَا هَوَادَةٌ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ هَؤُلاءِ صَنَادِيدُهُمْ وَأَئِمَّتُهُمْ وَقَادَتُهُمْ فَهَوِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَمْ يَهْوَ مَا قُلْتُ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمُ الْفِدَاءَفَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ قَالَ عُمَرُ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَاعِدٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَإِذَا هُمَا يَبْكِيَانِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي مَاذَا يُبْكِيكَ أَنْتَ وَصَاحِبَكَ؟ فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُ بُكَاءً بَكَيْتُ وَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ بُكَاءً تَبَاكَيْتُ لِبُكَائِكُمَا قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الَّذِي عَرَضَ عَلَيَّ أَصْحَابُكَ مِنَ الْفِدَاءِ وَلَقَدْ عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ عَذَابُكُمْ أَدْنَى مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ لِشَجَرَةٍ قَرِيبَةٍ وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ} [الأنفال 67] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ} [الأنفال 68] مِنَ الْفِدَاءِ ثُمَّ أُحِلَّ لَهُمُ الْغَنَائِمُفَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ أُحُدٍ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ عُوقِبُوا بِمَا صَنَعُوا يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ مِنْ أَخْذِهِمُ الْفِدَاءَ فَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ وَفَرَّ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَكُسِرَتْ رَبَاعِيَتُهُ وَهُشِمَتِ الْبَيْضَةُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَسَالَ الدَّمُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُّصِيبَةٌ} [آل عمران 165] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} [آل عمران 165] بِأَخْذِكُمُ الْفِدَاءَ

[AI] I heard Ibn Abbas say, "When the delegation of Abd al-Qays arrived to the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , he asked, 'From which tribe or people is this delegation?' They replied, 'From the tribe of Rabi'ah.' He said, 'Welcome to the delegation, or people, who are not treacherous nor deceitful.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you from a distant and dangerous place, and between us and you is the territory of the disbelievers of Mudar. We can only come to you during the sacred month. So inform us of an action that will allow us to enter Paradise and we can inform those behind us. They also asked him about certain drinks, so he ordered them to consume four and prohibited them from four others. He ordered them to have faith in Allah, and they said, 'We know that Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'The testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting Ramadan, and giving one-fifth of the spoils of war. He prohibited them from predatory animals, such as the dog and the eagle, and from slaughtered animals in the name of their idols. He also prohibited them from drinking out of pots and pipes made of the skin of dead animals.' He said, 'Keep them in mind and inform those who are behind you.'"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, "What do you say about these prisoners?" Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, your people and your family are seeking their ransom and interceding for them, hoping that Allah may accept their repentance." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, they have expelled and rejected you. Bring them close and strike their necks." Abdullah ibn Rawaha said, "O Messenger of Allah, look, there is a valley filled with firewood, throw them into it and then set it on fire." Abbas said, "You have severed your ties of kinship, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم entered and did not respond to them. He said, "Some people take the opinion of Abu Bakr, some take the opinion of Umar, and some take the opinion of Abdullah ibn Rawaha." Then the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Verily, Allah softens the hearts of certain individuals until they become softer than milk, and He strengthens the hearts of others until they become harder than stone. And your example, O Abu Bakr, is like the example of Ibrahimﷺ who said, 'Whoever follows me is from me, and whoever disobeys me, indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful.' And your example, O Abu Bakr, is like the example of 'Isa, who said, 'If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' And your example, O Umar, is like the example of Nuh, who said, 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.' And your example, O Umar, is like the example of Musa, who said, 'My Lord, harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.' You are a group, and none of them will escape except by redemption or by a severe blow to the neck." Abdullah said, "O Messenger of Allah, except for Suhail ibn Bayda, for I have heard him mentioning Islam." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم fell silent. He said, "I have never been more afraid of stones falling from the sky than I am in this day, except for Suhail ibn Bayda." Allah Almighty then revealed, "It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise" [Quran 8:67] until His saying, "If it had not been for a decree from Allah which preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment" [Quran 8:68].

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا تَقُولُونَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَسْرَى؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَوْمُكَ وَأَهْلُكَ اسْتَبْقِهِمْ وَاسْتَأْنِ بِهِمْ لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَالَ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْرَجُوكَ وَكَذَّبُوكَ قَرِّبْهُمْ فَاضْرِبْ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ قَالَ وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ انْظُرْ وَادِيًا كَثِيرَ الْحَطَبِ فَأَدْخِلْهُمْ فِيهِ ثُمَّ أَضْرِمْ عَلَيْهِمْ نَارًاقَالَ فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ قَطَعْتَ رَحِمَكَ قَالَ فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عُمَرَ وَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَيُلِينُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَلْيَنَ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَيَشُدُّ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَشَدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ {مَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} وَمَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ عِيسَى قَالَ {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ} [المائدة 118] وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِنُوحٍ قَالَ {رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا} [نوح 26] وَإِنَّ مِثْلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ مُوسَى قَالَ رَبِّ {اشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ} [يونس 88] أَنْتُمْ عَالَةٌ فَلَا يَنْفَلِتَنَّ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا بِفِدَاءٍ أَوْ ضَرْبَةِ عُنُقٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِلَّا سُهَيْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ فَإِنِّي قَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَذْكُرُ الْإِسْلَامَ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ قَالَ فَمَا رَأَيْتُنِي فِي يَوْمٍ أَخْوَفَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَيَّ حِجَارَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ حَتَّى قَالَ إِلَّا سُهَيْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ} [الأنفال 67] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ} [الأنفال 68]

[AI] We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He said, "Do you have any trouble looking at the sun when there are no clouds?" We said, "No." He said, "Then how about looking at the moon on a full moon night when there are no clouds?" We said, "No."

He said, "Indeed, you will see your Lord in a similar manner on the Day of Resurrection. Allah will gather people on the Day of Resurrection in one plain." He said, "Then it will be said, 'Whoever used to worship something, let him follow it.' So those who used to worship the sun will fall into the fire, and those who used to worship the moon will fall into the fire, and those who used to worship idols will fall into the fire." He said, "And everyone who used to worship anything besides Allah, until they fall into the fire."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then only the believers and their hypocrites will remain, between their shoulders, and a few of the People of the Book. Allah will make them insignificant with His hand. Then Allah will come to them and say, 'Are you not following what you used to worship?' They will say, 'We used to worship Allah and we did not see Him.' Then a part of His leg will be uncovered, and no one who used to prostrate to Allah out of sincerity will remain, except that he will fall prostrate. And no one who used to prostrate for showing off and for reputation will remain, except that he will fall on his nose."

He said, "Then the Sirat (bridge) will be placed between Hellfire and the people. The Prophets will be on one side and the people will be on the other side. They will say, 'O Allah, grant safety, grant safety.' It is said to them, 'Look, who among you used to have a dinar's weight of faith in his heart?' They will say, 'We used to fight and strive in battles against the enemy, and we used to perform Hajj and Umrah.' It will be said, 'But you bring them the easement.' Then Allah will say, 'Look, who among you used to have a weight of a dirham of faith in his heart?' They will say, 'We used to enjoin good and forbid evil, and we used to give charity.' It will be said, 'But you bring them the easement.' Then Allah will say, 'Look, who among you used to have a weight of a mustard seed of faith in his heart?' They will say, 'We would say, 'La ilaha illa Allah' (there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah).' It will be said, 'But you bring them the easement.' Abu Sa'id said, 'Between me and you is the Book of Allah.' And I think he meant the statement of Allah, 'And if there is even the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.' (Quran 21:47)." He said, "Then they will be brought out of the Fire and will be thrown into a river called Al-Hayawan (Animal River), and they will grow like the growing of a seed in a flood. Do you not see that whatever comes out of the earth to the sun is green? And whatever comes out of the earth to the shade is yellow?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is as if you are a shepherd." He said, "Yes, I am like a shepherd.”

أحمد:١١١٢٧حَدَّثَنَا رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ

سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ نَرَى رَبَّنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ؟ قَالَ هَلْ تُضَارُّونَ فِي الشَّمْسِ لَيْسَ دُونَهَا سَحَابٌ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تُضَارُّونَ فِي الْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ لَيْسَ دُونَهُ سَحَابٌ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا لَا

قَالَ فَإِنَّكُمْ تَرَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ كَذَلِكَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَجْمَعُ اللهُ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي صَعِيدٍ وَاحِدٍ قَالَ فَيُقَالُ مَنْ كَانَ يَعْبُدُ شَيْئًا فَلْيَتْبَعْهُ قَالَ فَيَتْبَعُ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ الشَّمْسَ الشَّمْسَ فَيَتَسَاقَطُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَيَتْبَعُ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ الْقَمَرَ الْقَمَرَ فَيَتَسَاقَطُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَيَتْبَعُالَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ الْأَوْثَانَ الْأَوْثَانَ وَالَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ الْأَصْنَامَ الْأَصْنَامَ فَيَتَسَاقَطُونَ فِي النَّارِ قَالَ وَكُلُّ مَنْ كَانَ يُعْبَدُ مِنْ دُونِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَتَسَاقَطُونَ فِي النَّارِ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَيَبْقَى الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَمُنَافِقُوهُمْ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَيْهِمْ وَبَقَايَا أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَقَلَّلَهُمْ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ فَيَأْتِيهِمُ اللهُ ﷻ فَيَقُولُ أَلَا تَتَّبِعُونَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ؟ قَالَ فَيَقُولُونَ كُنَّا نَعْبُدُ اللهَ وَلَمْ نَرَ اللهَ فَيُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ فَلَا يَبْقَى أَحَدٌ كَانَ يَسْجُدُ لِلَّهِ إِلَّا وَقَعَ سَاجِدًا وَلَا يَبْقَى أَحَدٌ كَانَ يَسْجُدُ رِيَاءً وَسُمْعَةً إِلَّا وَقَعَ عَلَى قَفَاهُ

قَالَ ثُمَّ يُوضَعُ الصِّرَاطُ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَيْ جَهَنَّمَ وَالْأَنْبِيَاءُ بِنَاحِيتَيْهِ قَوْلُهُمْ اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْ سَلِّمْ اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْ سَلِّمْ وَإِنَّهُ لَدَحْضُ مَزَلَّةٍ وَإِنَّهُ لَكَلَالِيبُ وَخَطَاطِيفُ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَلَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهُ قَدْ قَالَ تَخْطَفُ النَّاسَ وَحَسَكَةٌ تَنْبُتُ بِنَجْدٍ يُقَالُ لَهَا السَّعْدَانُ قَالَ وَنَعَتَهَا لَهُمْ قَالَ فَأَكُونُ أَنَا وَأُمَّتِي لَأَوَّلَ مَنْ مَرَّ أَوْ أَوَّلَ مَنْ يُجِيزُ قَالَ فَيَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِ مِثْلَ الْبَرْقِ وَمِثْلَ الرِّيحِ وَمِثْلَ أَجَاوِيدِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرِّكَابِ فَنَاجٍ مُسَلَّمٌ وَمَخْدُوشٌ مُكَلَّمٌ وَمَكْدُوسٌ فِي النَّارِ فَإِذَا قَطَعُوهُ أَوْ فَإِذَا جَاوَزُوهُ فَمَا أَحَدُكُمْ فِي حَقٍّ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ حَقٌّ لَهُ بِأَشَدَّ مُنَاشَدَةً مِنْهُمْ فِي إِخْوَانِهِمُ الَّذِينَ سَقَطُوا فِي النَّارِ يَقُولُونَ أَيْ رَبِّ كُنَّا نَغْزُوجَمِيعًا وَنَحُجُّ جَمِيعًا وَنَعْتَمِرُ جَمِيعًا فِيمَ نَجَوْنَا الْيَوْمَ وَهَلَكُوا؟ قَالَ فَيَقُولُ اللهُ ﷻ انْظُرُوا مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ زِنَةُ دِينَارٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ قَالَ فَيُخْرَجُونَ قَالَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ زِنَةُ قِيرَاطٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ قَالَ فَيُخْرَجُونَ قَالَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ قَالَ فَيُخْرَجُونَ قَالَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ كِتَابُ اللهِ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَأَظُنُّهُ يَعْنِي قَوْلَهُ {وَإِنْ كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا وَكَفَى بِنَا حَاسِبِينَ} [الأنبياء 47] قَالَ فَيُخْرَجُونَ مِنَ النَّارِ فَيُطْرَحُونَ فِي نَهَرٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ نَهَرُ الْحَيَوَانِ فَيَنْبُتُونَ كَمَا تَنْبُتُ الْحِبُّ فِي حَمِيلِ السَّيْلِ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ النَّبْتِ إِلَى الشَّمْسِ يَكُونُ أَخْضَرَ وَمَا يَكُونُ إِلَى الظِّلِّ يَكُونُ أَصْفَرَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَأَنَّكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ رَعَيْتَ الْغَنَمَ؟ قَالَ أَجَلْ قَدْ رَعَيْتُ الْغَنَمَ

[AI] Narrated by Qatada who met the delegation, Abu Nadrah mentioned that Abu Said said: "When the delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they said, 'We are from Rabiah, and between us and you are the disbelieving Mudar people. We cannot come to you except during the months of haram (i.e., the sacred months). So, please appoint a matter for us so that when we hold onto it, we will enter Paradise and have it as a means of invoking (Allah) for us. If we are engaged in a matter and we seek help from Allah and invoke Him for it, it will be given to us.' He said, 'I command you to fulfill four matters, and I prohibit you from four things. I command you to worship Allah, and do not associate anything with Him. This is a matter other than the four matters. Establish the prayer, pay the Zakah, observe fasting during Ramadan, and pay the fifth of the war spoils. I prohibit you from four things: from predatory animals, the dumbiyah, the hantam, and the muzaft. They asked, 'What is the dumbiyah?' He said, 'A rooted tree, with its branches removed, then it is thrust into the meat of the livestock, camels, or sheep. Water is then poured into it until it boils, and you then drink from it.' They asked, 'What do you command us to drink?' He replied, 'Water that is stored with a strong rope tied to its neck.' They said, 'Indeed, our land is infested with rats, so no water can remain in it except the water of Al-Udum.' He said, 'If the rats consume it one, two, or three times, it does not matter.' And he said to Ashajj Abd Qays, 'Indeed, you have two qualities that Allah loves: patience and forbearance.'"

حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُعَمَّنْ لَقِيَ الْوَفْدَ وَذَكَرَ أَبَا نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ أَنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ لَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالُوا إِنَّا حَيٌّ مِنْ رَبِيعَةَ وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ كُفَّارُ مُضَرَ وَلَسْنَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَأْتِيَكَ إِلَّا فِي أَشْهُرِ الْحُرُمِ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَخَذْنَا بِهِ دَخَلْنَا الْجَنَّةَ وَنَأْمُرُ بِهِ أَوْ نَدْعُو مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا فَقَالَ آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ اعْبُدُوا اللهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا فَهَذَا لَيْسَ مِنَ الْأَرْبَعِ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَصُومُوا رَمَضَانَ وَأَعْطُوا مِنَ الْغَنَائِمِ الْخُمُسَ وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ قَالُوا وَمَا عِلْمُكَ بِالنَّقِيرِ؟ قَالَ جِذْعٌ يُنْقَرُ ثُمَّ يُلْقُونَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُطَيْعَاءِ أَوِ التَّمْرِ وَالْمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا سَكَنَ غَلَيَانُهُ شَرِبْتُمُوهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَضْرِبُ ابْنَ عَمِّهِ بِالسَّيْفِ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَتْهُ جِرَاحَةٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَجَعَلْتُ أُخَبِّئُهَا حَيَاءً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالُوا فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَشْرَبَ؟ قَالَ فِي الْأَسْقِيَةِ الَّتِي يُلَاثُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهَا قَالُوا إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضٌ كَثِيرَةُ الْجُرْذَانِ لَا تَبْقَى فِيهَاأَسْقِيَةُ الْأُدُمِ قَالَ وَإِنْ أَكَلَتْهُ الْجُرْذَانُ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا وَقَالَ لِأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِنَّ فِيكَ خَلَّتَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللهُ ﷻ الْحِلْمُ وَالْأَنَاةُ

[AI] "Do you know the story of Ayyub (Job)? I said, what is the story of Ayyub? He said, there was a village where there were people from the Jews, so Allah forbade them from hunting whales on the Sabbath. Their whales used to come to them on their Sabbath, appearing white like pregnant women. But on days other than the Sabbath, they could not find them nor catch them except with great difficulty and hardship. So some of them said to others, or someone said among them, "If we take them on a day other than the Sabbath and eat them, let us do it." So a household among them did that. They took the whales and ate them, and then they roasted them. Their neighbors smelled the roasting and said, "By Allah, we do not see anything of the people of so-and-so." Others among them took more of the whales until this behavior spread among them and became widespread. They eventually separated into three groups: one that ate, one that forbade, and one that asked, 'Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' [Quran 7:164]. The group that forbade said, 'We warn you of Allah's anger and punishment that may hit you with sinking or stoning or some of the punishments that He has.' And by Allah, we do not hide anything from you while you are present.' They then left the city and stayed away until the next day, then they came and knocked on the door of the city, but no one answered them. So they brought a ladder and leaned it against the wall, and one from among them climbed over it. He called out, 'O servants of Allah, due to their sins, they were transformed into monkeys, with tails.' They knew their lineages were from human beings, while the human beings did not know that their lineage had become that of monkeys. The person would sniff at his male relative, sticking to him, and the human being would say to him, 'Are you so and so?' The monkey would point to his head, meaning yes, and would weep. The female monkey would go to her male relative, sticking to him, and the human being would say to her, 'Are you so-and-so?' She would point to her head, meaning yes, and would weep. The human beings then said to each other, 'Indeed, we warned you of Allah's punishment, that He would strike you with a crumbling or a transformation or some of the punishment that He has.' Ibn Abbas said, 'I do not know what the third group did.' Ibn Abbas also said, 'How many times have we seen an evil action and we did not forbid it?' Ikrimah said, 'I then said, what do you see that Allah made me do?' They had denied and disliked what they said when they asked, 'Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' So my statement amazed them, and Allah ordered me to wear two heavy coats, so they covered me with them."

هَلْ تَعْرِفُ أَيْلَةَ؟ قُلْتُ وَمَا أَيْلَةَ؟ قَالَ قَرْيَةٌ كَانَ بِهَا نَاسٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَحَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْحِيتَانِ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ فَكَانَتْ حِيتَانُهُمْ تَأْتِيهِمْ يَوْمَ سَبْتِهِمْ شُرَّعًا بَيْضَاءَ سِمَانَ كَأَمْثَالِ الْمَخَاضِ بَأَفْنِيَاتِهِمْ وَأَبْنِيَاتِِهِمْ فَإِذَا كَانَ فِي غَيْرِ يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ لَمْ يَجِدُوهَا وَلَمْ يُدْرِكُوهَا إِلَّا فِي مَشَقَّةٍ وَمَئُونَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَوْ مَنْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ لَعَلَّنَا لَوْ أَخَذْنَاهَا يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ وَأَكَلْنَاهَا فِي غَيْرِ يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ فَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ مِنْهُمْ فَأَخَذُوا فَشَوَوْا فَوَجَدَ جِيرَانُهُمْ رِيحَ الشِّوَاءِ فَقَالُوا وَاللَّهِ مَا نََرََى أَصْحَابَ بَنِي فُلَانٍ شَيْءٌ فَأَخَذُوهَا آخَرُونَ حَتَّى فَشَا ذَلِكَ فِيهِمْ وَكَثُرَ فَافْتَرَقُوا فِرَقًا ثَلَاثًا فِرْقَةٌ أَكَلَتْ وَفِرْقَةٌ نَهَتْ وَفِرْقَةٌ قَالَتْ {لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا اللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ} [الأعراف 164] عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا فَقَالَتِ الْفِرْقَةُ الَّتِي نَهَتْ إِنَّا نُحَذِّرُكُمْ غَضَبَ اللَّهِ وَعِقَابَهُ أَنْ يُصِيبَكُمْ بِخَسْفٍ أَوْ قَذْفٍ أَوْ بِبَعْضِ مَا عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ وَاللَّهِ لَا نُبَايِتُكُمْ فِي مَكَانٍ وَأَنْتُمْ فِيهِ وَخَرَجُوا مِنَ السُّورِ فَغَدَوْا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْغَدِ فَضَرَبُوا بَابَ السُّورِ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُمْ أَحَدٌ فَأَتَوْا بِسُلَّمٍ فَأَسْنَدُوهُ إِلَى السُّورِ ثُمَّ رَقِيَ مِنْهُمْ رَاقٍ عَلَى السُّورِ فَقَالَ يَا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ قِرَدَةٌ وَاللَّهِ لَهَا أَذْنَابٌ تَعَاوَى ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ مِنَ السُّورِ فَفَتَحَ السُّورَ فَدَخَلَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَعَرَفَتِ الْقِرَدَةُ أَنْسَابَهَا مِنَ الْإِنْسِ وَلَمْ تَعْرِفِ الْإِنْسُ أَنْسَابَهَا مِنَ الْقِرَدَةِ قَالَ فَيَأْتِي الْقَرَدُ إِلَى نَسِيبِهِ وَقَرِيبِهِ مِنَ الْإِنْسِ فَيَحْتَكُّ بِهِ وَيَلْصَقُ وَيَقُولُ الْإِنْسَانُ أَنْتَ فُلَانٌ؟ فَيُشِيرُ بِرَأْسِهِ أَيْ نَعَمْ وَيَبْكِي وَتَأْتِي الْقِرَدَةُ إِلَى نَسِيبِهَا وَقَرِيبِهَا مِنَ الْإِنْسِ فَيَقُولُ لَهَا أَنْتِ فُلَانَةٌ؟ فَتُشِيرُ بِرَأْسِهَا أَيْ نَعَمْ وَتَبْكِي فَيَقُولُ لَهُمُ الْإِنْسُ أَمَا إِنَّا حَذَّرْنَاكُمْ غَضَبَ اللَّهِ وَعِقَابَهُ أَنْ يُصِيبَكُمْ بِخَسْفٍ أَوْ مَسْخٍ أَوْ بِبَعْضِ مَا عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَاسْمَعِ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ «فَأَنْجَيْنَا الَّذِينَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ السُّوءِ وَأَخَذْنَا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا بِعَذَابٍ بَئِيسٍ بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ» فَلَا أَدْرِي مَا فَعَلَتِ الْفُرْقَةُ الثَّالِثَةُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَكَمْ قَدْ رَأَيْنَا مِنْ مُنْكَرٍ فَلَمْ نَنْهَ عَنْهُ قَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ فَقُلْتُ مَا تَرَى جَعَلَنِي اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ؟ إِنَّهُمْ قَدْ أَنْكَرُوا وَكَرِهُوا حِينَ قَالُوا لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا اللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا؟ فَأَعْجَبَهُ قُولِي ذَلِكَ وَأَمَرَ لِي بِبُرْدَيْنِ غَلِيظَيْنِ فَكَسَانِيهُمَا

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجَاهُ» صحيح

They said, 'They are the Rabia'ah.' He ﷺ said, 'Welcome to the people or to the delegation, who are not deceitful or treacherous.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we come to you from a distant, forbidding place. There are disbelievers between us and you, from the tribe of Mudar. And we can only come to you in the sacred month. So we have come with a matter that we will inform those who are behind us about, and we hope to enter Paradise with it.' He ﷺ gave them four commandments and prohibited them from four things. He commanded them to have faith in Allah alone and asked, 'Do you know what faith in Allah alone is?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He ﷺ said, 'It is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give charity, to observe the fast of Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the war spoils. And he prohibited them from predatory hawks (du'ba'), the tame snake (hantam), and the muzaffat.'"

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنِ الْوَفْدُ أَوْ مَنِ الْقَوْمُ؟ » قَالُوا رَبِيعَةُ قَالَ «مَرْحَبًا بِالْقَوْمِ أَوْ بِالْوَفْدِ غَيْرَ خَزَايَا وَلَا نَدَامَى» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَأْتِيكَ مِنْ شُقَّةٍ بَعِيدَةٍ إِنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ هَذَا الْحَيُّ مِنْ كُفَّارِ مُضَرَ وَإِنَّا لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَأْتِيَكَ إِلَّا فِي شَهْرٍ حَرَامٍ فَمُرْنَا بِأَمْرٍ نُخْبِرُ بِهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا وَنَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ أَمَرَهُمْ بِالْإِيمَانِ بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ وَقَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ؟ » قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامُ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ وَصَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ وَأَنْ تُعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ وَنَهَاهُمْ عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ»

[AI] Narrated by more than one person who met the delegation, Abu Nadrah mentioned that he heard from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that when the delegation of Abdul Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they said, "O Messenger of Allah, we reside among the unbelievers of Mudhar, and we can only be with you during the sacred month. So, give us a task that we can pray for, and by which we can enter Paradise if we accomplish it or do it."

He replied, "I command you to do four things and prohibit you from four. You are to worship Allah and associate none with Him in worship, establish prayer, give zakat, fast in Ramadan, and give one-fifth of the spoils of war. I prohibit you from four things: seeking omens by divining arrows, and offering a sacrifice at the places where the pre-Islamic pagans used to offer sacrifices, and wearing false amulets, and practicing divination by drawing lines in the sand."

They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is divination by drawing lines?" He said, "You draw lines and throw pebbles, and the animal that those pebbles hit shall be the one you slaughter. Then you pour water over it to make it boil. When it calms down, you drink from it. Perhaps one of you may strike his cousin with a sword."

The Prophet then said that among the people was a man who had struck someone with a sword. The man said that he had been concealing this out of shame before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . They asked, "So what do you command us to drink, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Drink from the water that is being poured on the she-camel having drawn three times on its mouth." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, our land is infested with gerbils, and not a single she-camel remains with us that has anything left to pour on its mouth."

He said, "Even if the gerbils have eaten it, pour the water three times." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to Ashadjj Al-Abdi Al-Qaisi, "Indeed, you possess two qualities that Allah loves: gentleness and leniency."

[AI] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the marketplace of Dhi Al-Majaz wearing a red robe, and he was saying, "O people, say there is no deity but Allah, and you will be successful." A man was following him, throwing stones at him, causing his back and heels to bleed, while saying, "O people, do not obey him, for he is a liar." I asked, "Who is this?" It was said, "He is the son of Abd Al-Muttalib." I then asked, "Who is the one who follows him and throws stones at him?" It was said, "He is Abd Al-Uzza, the father of Lahab." When Islam emerged, we left until we reached a place near Madinah, and we had with us a container of dates. While we were sitting, a man approached us wearing two white garments and greeted us, asking, "Where are the people coming from?" We said, "From Rabdah." He asked, "Do you sell this camel?" We said, "Yes." He asked, "For how much?" We replied, "For such and such amount of dates." He said, "I will take it." He took the camel and did not haggle with us. Then, he disappeared within the walls of Madinah, and we whispered to each other, wondering if he knew the value of our camel. The man with the container said, "Do not whisper among yourselves, for I saw the face of a man whom none of you could belittle. I have never seen anything resembling the moon on the night of a full moon as his face." Later that evening, a man approached us and greeted us, saying, "I am the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah, and he says, 'You may eat until you are satiated, and trade until you are content.'" We ate until we were full and traded until we were content. The next morning, we arrived at Madinah, and there stood the Messenger of Allah, delivering a sermon from the pulpit, saying, "The hand that gives is higher than the one that receives, and start with those you are responsible for, your mother and father, then your sister and brother, and then the closest ones." A man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, these are the sons of Tha'laba ibn Yarbua who killed so and so in the age of ignorance. Take our revenge from him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands up, and I saw the whiteness of his armpits as he said, "No, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child, no, a mother cannot seek revenge for her child."

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سُوقِ ذِي الْمَجَازِ وَعَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ حَمْرَاءُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ تُفْلِحُوا» وَرَجُلٌ يَتْبَعُهُ يَرْمِيهِ بِالْحِجَارَةِ وَقَدْ أَدْمَى عُرْقُوبَيْهِ وَكَعْبَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ لَا تُطِيعُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ كَذَّابٌ فَقُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا؟ قِيلَ هَذَا غُلَامُ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قُلْتُ فَمَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي يَتْبَعُهُ يَرْمِيهِ بِالْحِجَارَةِ؟ قَالَ هَذَا عَبْدُ الْعُزَّى أَبُو لَهَبٍ قَالَ فَلَمَّا ظَهَرَ الْإِسْلَامُ خَرَجْنَا فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى نَزَلْنَا قَرِيبًا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَمَعَنَا ظَعِينَةٌ لَنَا فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ قُعُودٌ إِذْ أَتَانَا رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَبْيَضَانِ فَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ مِنْ أَيْنَ أَقْبَلَ الْقَوْمُ؟ قُلْنَا مِنَ الرَّبَذَةِ قَالَ وَمَعَنَا جَمَلٌ قَالَ أَتَبِيعُونَ هَذَا الْجَمَلَ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ بِكَمْ؟ قُلْنَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ قَالَ فَأَخَذَهُ وَلَمْ يَسْتَنْقِصْنَا قَالَ قَدْ أَخَذْتُهُ ثُمَّ تَوَارَى بِحِيطَانِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَتَلَاوَمْنَا فِيمَا بَيْنَنَا فَقُلْنَا أَعْطَيْتُمْ جَمَلَكُمْ رَجُلًا لَا تَعْرِفُونَهُ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَتِ الظَّعِينَةُ لَا تَلَاوَمُوا فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيَحْقِرَكُمْ * مَا رَأَيْتُ شَيْئًا أَشْبَهَ بِالْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ مِنْ وَجْهِهِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْعَشِيِّ أَتَانَا رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا وَقَالَ أَنَا رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ لَكُمْ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا حَتَّى تَشْبَعُوا وَتَكْتَالُوا حَتَّى تَسْتَوْفُوا» قَالَ فَأَكَلْنَا حَتَّى شَبِعْنَا وَاكْتَلْنَا حَتَّى اسْتَوْفَيْنَا قَالَ ثُمَّ قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ مِنَ الْغَدِ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَائِمٌ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «يَدُ الْمُعْطِي يَدُ الْعُلْيَا وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ أُمَّكَ وَأَبَاكَ أُخْتَكَ وَأَخَاكَ ثُمَّ أَدْنَاكَ أَدْنَاكَ» فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَؤُلَاءِ بَنُو ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ يَرْبُوعٍ قَتَلُوا فُلَانًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَخُذْ لَنَا بِثَأْرِنَا مِنْهُ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ بَيَاضَ إِبْطَيْهِ وَقَالَ «أَلَا لَا تَجْنِي أُمٌّ عَلَى وَلَدٍ أَلَا لَا تَجْنِي أُمٌّ عَلَى وَلَدٍ»

قَالَ اشْتَرَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ مِنْ عَازِبٍ رَحْلًا بِثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ قُلْ لِلْبَرَاءِ فَلْيَحْمِلْهُ إِلَى رَحْلِي فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا أَنْ تُحَدِّثَنَا حِينَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنْتَ مَعَهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ خَرَجْنَا وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ يَطْلُبُونَ فَأَدْلَجْنَا لَيْلَتَنَا وَيَوْمَنَا حَتَّى أَظْهَرْنَا وَقَامَ قَائِمُ الظَّهِيرَةِ فَرَمَيْتُ بِبَصَرِي هَلْ أَرَى مِنْ ظِلٍّ نَأْوِي إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِظِلِّ صَخْرَةٍ فَفَرَشْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيهِ فَرْوَةً ثُمَّ قُلْتُ اضْطَجِعْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ انْطَلَقْتُ أَنْظُرُ مَا حَوْلِي هَلْ أَرَى مِنْ طَلَبِ أَحَدٍ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَاعِي غَنَمٍ يَسُوقُ غَنَمَهُ إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ يُرِيدُ مِنْهَا الَّذِي أَرَدْنَا فَسَأَلْتُهُ لِمَنْ أَنْتَ يَا غُلَامُ ؟ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ وَانْتَسَبَ حَتَّى عَرَفْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ فِي غَنَمِكَ مِنْ لَبَنٍ ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ فَهَلْ أَنْتَ حَالِبٌ لِي ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَأَمَرْتُهُ فَاعْتَقَلَ شَاةً مِنْ غَنَمِهِ ثُمَّ أَمَرْتُهُ فَنَفَضَ ضَرْعَهَا مِنَ الْغُبَارِ ثُمَّ أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَنْفُضَ كَفَّيْهِ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ وَنَفَضَ إِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ بِالْأُخْرَى قَالَ فَحَلَبَ لِي كُثْبَةً مِنْ لَبَنٍ وَقَدْ رَوِيتُ وَمَعِي إِدَاوَةٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَمِهَا خِرْقَةٌ فَصَبَبْتُ عَلَى اللَّبَنِ حَتَّى بَرُدَ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ اشْرَبْ فَشَرِبَ حَتَّى رَضِيتُ قُلْتُ الرَّحِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَارْتَحَلْنَا وَالْقَوْمُ يَطْلُبُونَا فَلَمْ يُدْرِكْنَا أَحَدٌ غَيْرُ سُرَاقَةَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَلَى فَرَسٍ قُلْتُ هَذَا طَلَبٌ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَا مِنَّا وَكَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُ قِيدُ رُمْحَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٌ قُلْتُ هَذَا الطَّلَبُ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَبَكَيْتُ فَقَالَ لِمَ تَبْكِي ؟ قُلْتُ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ مَا عَلَى نَفْسِي أَبْكِي وَلَكِنْ أَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اكْفِنَاهُ فَسَاخَتْ فَرَسُهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَى بَطْنِهَا وَوَثَبَ عَنْهَا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَنَادَى يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ هَذَا أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ مِنْكَ أَوْ عَمَلِكَ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُنَجِّيَنِي مِمَّا أَنَا فِيهُ فَوَاللَّهِ لَأُعَمِّيَنَّ عَلَى مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنَ الطَّلَبِ وَخُذْ سَهْمًا مِنِّي فَإِنَّكَ سَتَمُرُّ عَلَى إِبِلٍ لِي بِمَكَانِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَخُذْ مِنْهَا مَا شِئْتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِيهَا فَدَعَا لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقَ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَأَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَتَلَقَّاهُ النَّاسُ عَلَى الطُّرُقِ النِّسَاءُ وَالْخَدَمُ فِي الطُّرُقِ يَقُولُونَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ جَاءَ مُحَمَّدٌ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَتَنَازَعَهُ الْقَوْمُ أَيُّهُمْ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَنْزِلُ اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى بَنِي النَّجَّارِ أَخْوَالِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ لِنُكْرِمَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَ فَغَدَا حَيْثُ أَمَرَ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فِي عِشْرِينَ رَاكِبًا فَقُلْنَا مَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَلَى أَثَرِي ثُمَّ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَمَا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُ سُوَرًا مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ نا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ نا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِهِ

قَالَ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ نَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَهُمْ أَلْفٌ وَإِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَهُمْ ثَلَاثُ مِائَةٍ وَسَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا فَاسْتَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْقِبْلَةَ ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَيْهِ فَجَعَلَ يَهْتِفُ بِرَبِّهِ يَقُولُ أَنْجِزْ لِي مَا وَعَدْتَنِي اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ تُهْلِكْ هَذِهِ الْعِصَابَةَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ لَا تَعْبُدُ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَمَا زَالَ يَهْتِفُ بِرَبِّهِ مَادًّا يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى سَقَطَ رِدَاؤُهُ عَنْ مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَأَتَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَخَذَ رِدَاءَهُ فَأَلْقَاهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيْهِ ثُمَّ الْتَزَمَهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ وَقَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ كَفَاكَ مُنَاشَدَتُكَ رَبَّكَ فَإِنَّهُ سَيُنْجِزُ لَكَ مَا وَعَدَكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُمْ بِأَلْفٍ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ } قَالَ وَأَمَدَّهُ اللَّهُ بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ قَالَ أَبُو زُمَيْلٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَشْتَدُّ فِي إِثْرِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ إِذْ سَمِعَ ضَرْبَةً بِالسَّوْطِ فَوْقَهُ وَصَوْتُ الْفَارِسِ يَقُولُ قَادِمٌ حَيْزُومُ إِذْ نَظَرَ الْمُشْرِكُ أَمَامَهُ فَخَرَّ مُسْتَلْقِيًا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَدْ خُطِمَ عَلَى شِقِّ وَجْهِهِ كَضَرْبَةِ السَّوْطِ فَجَاءَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ صَدَقْتَ ذَاكَ مَدَدُ السَّمَاءِ الثَّالِثَةِ فَقَتَلُوا يَوْمَئِذٍ سَبْعِينَ وَأَسَرُوا سَبْعِينَ قَالَ أَبُو زُمَيْلٍ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ لَمَّا أَسَرُوا الْأُسَارَى قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَيَا عُمَرُ مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْأُسَارَى ؟ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ هُمْ بَنُو الْعَمِّ وَالْعَشِيرَةِ نَرَى أَنْ تَأْخُذَ أَوْ نَأْخُذَ مِنْهُمْ فِدْيَةً فَيَكُونَ لَنَا قُوَّةً عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا عُمَرُ مَا تَرَى ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا أَرَى الَّذِي قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَرَى أَنْ تُمَكِّنَّا مِنْهُمْ فَنَضْرِبَ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ وَتُمَكِّنَ عَلِيًّا مِنْ عَقِيلٍ فَيَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ وَتُمَكِّنِّي مِنْ فُلَانٍ نَسِيبًا لِعُمَرَ فَأَضْرِبَ عُنُقَهُ فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَئِمَّةُ الْكُفْرِ وَصَنَادِيدُهُمْ قَالَ فَهَوَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَلَمْ يَهْوَ مَا قُلْتُ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ جِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ قَاعِدَانِ يَبْكِيَانِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ تَبْكِي أَنْتَ وَصَاحِبُكَ فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُ بُكَاءً بَكَيْتُ وَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ بُكَاءً تَبَاكَيْتُ لِبُكَائِكُمَا ؟ فَقَالَ أَبْكِي لِلَّذِي عَرَضَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِكَ مِنْ أَخَذِهِمُ الْفِدَاءَ لَقَدْ عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ عَذَابُكُمْ أَدْنَى مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ لِشَجَرَةٍ قَرِيبَةٍ مِنْ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ فَكُلُوا مِمَّا غَنِمْتُمْ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا } فَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْغَنِيمَةَ لَكُمْ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ عَنْ عُمَرَ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ

وآتوا الزكاة وصوموا رمضان وأعطوا الخمس من المغانم وأنهاكم عن أربع عن الدباء والحنتم والمزفت والنقير قالوا يا رسول الله وما علمك بالنقير؟ قال الجذع ينقرونه ويدفئون فيه التمر والماء حتى إذا سكن غليانه شربتموه حتى إن أحدكم ليضرب ابن عمه بالسيف وفي القوم رجل قد أصابته جراحة كذلك فجعل يخبؤها مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قالوا يا رسول الله ففيم نشرب؟ قال في الأسقية الأدم التي يلاث على أفواهها قالوا يا رسول الله إن أرضنا كثيرة الجرذان ولا تبقي لنا أسقية الأدم قال فإن أكلها الجرذان فإن أكلها الجرذان مرتين أو ثلاث قال وقال نبي اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَشَجِّ عَبْدِ القيس إن فيك لخصلتين يحبهما الله تبارك وتعالى الحلم والأناة وهذا الحديث بهذا التمام لا نعلمه يُرْوَى عن أبي سعيد إِلا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ

Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley full of firewood, so set it ablaze and throw them into it." Abbas said, "May Allah cut off your mercy!" Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, your relatives, your lineage, and your people, forgive them. Allah will save them from the Fire because of you." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , then entered and asked, "What is your opinion about these two men?" He said, "Their example is like that of brothers who came before them." He mentioned the supplications of Nuh, Musa, Isa, and Ibrahim. He said, "Indeed, Allah strengthens the hearts of some men until they are harder than stone, and He softens the hearts of others until they are softer than tender plants. And indeed, you are a family, and none of you will turn away except through redemption or a strike to the neck." Abdullah said, "Except for Suhail bin Bayda'a." Abdullah said, "And I had heard him mention Islam, but then he remained silent." So I started to look at the sky to see when the stones would fall upon me. I said, "Let me speak before the Messenger of Allah." Then he said, "Except for Suhail bin Bayda'a."

الطبراني:١٠٢٥٨حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثنا زَائِدَةُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْأُسَارَى فَقَالَ «مَا تَرَوْنَ؟» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَذَّبُوكَ وَأَخْرَجُوكَ؛ اضْرِبْ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْتَ بِوَادٍ كَثِيرِ الْحَطَبِ فَأَضْرِمْهُ نَارًا ثُمَّ أَلْقِهِمْ فِيهِ فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ قَطَعَ اللهُ رَحِمَكَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عِتْرَتُكَ وَأَصْلُكَ وَقَوْمُكَ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْهُمْ فَسَيُنْقِذُهُمُ اللهُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ قَالَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَمِنْ قَائِلٍ يَقُولُ الْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَمِنْ قَائِلٍ يَقُولُ الْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ عُمَرُ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا قَوْلُكُمْ فِي هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ؟ إِنَّ مَثَلَهُمْ كَمَثَلِ إِخْوَةٍ لَهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ قَالَ نُوحٌ {رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا} وَقَالَ مُوسَى {رَبَّنَا اطْمِسْ عَلَى أَمْوَالِهِمْ} وَقَالَ عِيسَى {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ} وَقَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ {فَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَيُشْدِدُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَكُونَ أَشَدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ وَيُلِينُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى يَكُونَ أَلْيَنَ مِنَ اللِّينِ وَإِنَّ بِكُمْ عَيْلَةً وَلَا يَنْقَلِبُ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا بِفِدَاءٍ أَوْ ضَرْبَةِ عُنُقٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقُلْتُ إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَقَدْ كُنْتُ سَمِعْتُهُ يَذْكُرُ الْإِسْلَامَ فَسَكَتَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ مَتَى تَقَعُ عَلَيَّ الْحِجَارَةُ قُلْتُ أُقَدِّمُ الْقَوْلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَالَ «إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ»

[AI] I debated with the Qadariyyah and they embarrassed me, so I went to Imran ibn al-Husayn al-Khuzai, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and said, "O Abu Nujayd, I debated with the Qadariyyah and they embarrassed me. Do you have any hadith to narrate to me that may benefit me?" He replied, "If I were to narrate a hadith to you, it would be as if I covered your ears and you didn't hear it." So I said, "I only came for that." He said, "If Allah were to punish the people of the heavens and the earth, He would punish them and He is not unjust. And if He were to admit them into His mercy, His mercy would be wider for them than their sins. Then, Allah says, 'He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills.' So whoever is punished, it is the truth, and whoever is shown mercy, it is the truth." Ibn Mas'ud narrated a similar hadith from the Prophet ﷺ , and Abdullah bin Mas'ud recited it with abundant blessings and praises.

خَاصَمْتُ الْقَدَرِيَّةَ فَأَحْرَجُونِي فَأَتَيْتُ عِمْرَانَ بْنَ الْحُصَيْنِ الْخُزَاعِيَّ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا نُجَيْدٍ خَاصَمْتُ الْقَدَرِيَّةَ فَأَحْرَجُونِي فَهَلْ مِنْ حَدِيثٍ تُحَدِّثُنِي لَعَلَّ اللهَ يَنْفَعُنِي بِهِ؟ قَالَ لَعَلِّي لَوْ حَدَّثْتُكَ حَدِيثًا لَبِسْتَ عَلَيْهِ أُذُنَيْكَ كَأَنَّكَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا جِئْتُ لِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ اللهَ عَذَّبَ أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ وَأَهْلَ الْأَرْضِ عَذَّبَهُمْ وَهُوَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ وَلَوْ أَدْخَلَهُمْ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ كَانَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ أَوْسَعَ لَهُمْ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِمْ فَإِذَا هُوَ كَمَا قَالَ اللهُ ﷻ {يُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَغْفِرُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ} فَمَنْ عُذِّبَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ وَمَنْ رُحِمَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ وَلَوْ كَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ لِأَحَدِكُمْ ذَهَبًا أَوْ وَرِقًا فَأَنْفَقَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ لَمْ يَنْتَفِعْ بِذَلِكَ فَأَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ حَدِّثْهُ فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ يَا أَبَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدِّثْهُ فَحَدَّثَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ

[AI] His father said to him, "O son, seek from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a shroud from his clothes to wrap me in, and ask him to pray on me." Abdullah said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have recognized the honor of Abdullah and he has commanded me to ask you for a shroud to wrap him in and to pray on him." So the Prophet ﷺ gave him a shroud from his clothes and intended to pray on him. Omar said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have recognized Abdullah and his hypocrisy, do you pray on him even though Allah has forbidden you from praying on him?" He said, "Where?" Omar said, "If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Then I will increase it." Then Allah revealed, "And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever. Or stand at his grave." And Allah revealed, "Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times - never will Allah forgive them." A man entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he stayed for a long time, but the Prophet ﷺ did not follow him. Then Umar entered and saw the man and recognized the dislike in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ towards him in his position, so he said, "Perhaps you have upset the Prophet ﷺ ." The man understood and stood up. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have stood three times for you to follow me, but you did not." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you had a veil, for your wives are not like other women, and it is purity for their hearts." So Allah revealed, "O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Umar and informed him of that. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr and Umar about the prisoners, and Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, your people feel ashamed, so take ransom from them and seek their help." And Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, "Kill them." So the Prophet ﷺ took the opinion of Abu Bakr, and Allah revealed, "It is not for a prophet to have captives of war until he inflicts a massacre upon the earth. You desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter." Then Allah revealed, "And We have certainly created man from a sperm-drop of sperm." Until the end of the verses. Umar said, "Blessed is Allah, the best of creators." So Allah revealed, "So blessed is Allah, the best of creators."

لَهُ أَبُوهُ أَيْ بَنِيُّ اطْلُبْ لِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثَوْبًا مِنْ ثِيَابِهِ تُكَفِّنِّي فِيهِ وَمُرْهُ يُصَلِّي عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْتَ شَرَفَ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَإِنَّهُ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَطْلُبَ إِلَيْكَ ثَوْبًا تُكَفِّنُهُ فِيهِ وَأَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَعْطَاهُ ثَوْبًا مِنْ ثِيَابِهِ وَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْتَ عَبْدَ اللهِ ونِفَاقَهُ أَتُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ وَقَدْ نَهَاكَ اللهُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ «وَأَيْنَ؟» قَالَ {إِنْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللهُ لَهُمْ} فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَإِنِّي سَأَزِيدُهُ» فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ} وَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرَتَ لَهُمْ أُمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللهُ لَهُمْ} قَالَ وَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَطَالَ الْجُلُوسَ فَخَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ثَلَاثًا لِكَيْ يَتْبَعَهُ فَلَمْ يَفْعَلْ فَدَخَلَ عُمَرُ ؓ فَرَأَى الرَّجُلَ فَعَرَفَ الْكَرَاهِيَةَ فِي وَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَقْعَدِهِ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّكَ آذَيْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَفَطِنَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَامَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَقَدْ قُمْتُ ثَلَاثًا لِتَتَّبِعَنِي فَلَمْ تَفْعَلْ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ حاجِبًا فَإِنَّ نِسَاءَكَ لَسْنَ كَسَائِرِ النِّسَاءِ وَهُوَ طُهْرٌ لقُلُوبِهِنَّ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتَ النَّبِيِّ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤَذَنَ لَكُمْ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ وَاسْتَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فِي الْأُسَارَى فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَحيِي قَوْمَكَ وَخُذْ مِنْهُمُ الْفِدَاءَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِهِ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ اقْتُلْهُمْ فَقَالَ لَوِ اجْتَمَعْتُمَا مَا عَصَيْناكُمَا فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِقَوْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ} قَالَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَتْ {وَلَقَدْ خُلِقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَاتِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ تَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ فَأُنْزِلَتْ {فَتَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ}

[AI] When the delegation of Abdul Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he asked, "Who are you?" They replied, "We are from Rabi'ah." He said, "Welcome to you, O delegation! May you not be of those who regret." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are living under the protection of Rabi'ah, and we have come to you from a distant place. There is a tribe called Mudar between us and you, and we can only come to you during the sacred month. So give us a clear command that we can call and convey to those behind us so that we may enter Paradise." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I order you with four and prohibit you from four. I order you to have faith in Allah, bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Do you know what faith is? It is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah, establish prayer, pay Zakah, Fast during Ramadan, and give one-fifth of the spoils. I prohibit you from four things: Dubba, Hantam, Naqir, and Muzaffat." He added, "And perhaps I should also prohibit you from Muhayyar. Remember and convey them to those behind you."

[AI] I have debated with the people of destiny until they embarrassed me. Do you have any knowledge to inform me? They said, "If Allah punished the people of the heavens and the earth, He would punish them without being unjust. And if He admitted them into His mercy, His mercy would be greater than their sins. But as He has decreed, He punishes whom He wills and has mercy on whom He wills. So whoever is punished, it is true, and whoever is shown mercy, it is true. And even if you were to spend the equivalent of Uhud mountain in the cause of Allah, it would not be accepted from you until you believe in the entirety of destiny, its good and bad." Then 'Imran said to Abu al-Aswad when he narrated the Hadith, "I heard that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Abdullah and Ubayy bin Ka'b heard it with me." So Abu al-Aswad asked them to narrate it to him from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

إِنِّي قَدْ خَاصَمْتُ أَهْلَ الْقَدَرِ حَتَّى أَحْرَجُونِي فَهَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ عَلِمٌ فَتُحَدِّثُونِي؟ فَقَالُوا «لَوْ أَنَّ اللهَ ﷻ عَذَّبَ أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ عَذَّبَهُمْ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ وَلَوْ أَدْخَلَهُمْ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ كَانَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ أَوْسَعَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَلَكِنَّهُ كَمَا قَضَى يُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْحَمُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ فَمَنْ عُذِّبَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ وَمَنْ رُحِمَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ وَلَوْ كَانَ لَكَ مِثْلُ أُحُدٍ تُنْفِقُهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ مَا قَبِلَ مِنْكَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ عِمْرَانُ لِأَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ حِينَ حَدَّثَهُ الْحَدِيثَ «سَمِعْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَسَمِعَهُ مَعِي عَبْدُ اللهِ وَأُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ» فَسَأَلَهُمَا أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ فَحَدَّثَاهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I forbid you from four things: from using animals with saddles and bells, from branding the face of animals, from slashing the ears of animals, and from cutting their tails. And sometimes, he ﷺ added, 'from docking their ears.'" So, remember and convey this to those behind you.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What do you say about these captives?" Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, your people and your lineage are opposing them, and deeming them misguided. It is better for you to precede them and soften their hearts, so that perhaps Allah may repent upon them." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, they have denied you and expelled you. Proceed ahead of them and strike their necks." Abdullah ibn Rawaha said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley abundant with firewood. Ignite the valley upon them and throw them into it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent and did not respond to them. He then stood up and entered, and later said, "Some people take the opinion of Abu Bakr, while others take the opinion of Umar, and still others take the opinion of Abdullah ibn Rawaha." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then addressed them, saying, "Verily, Allah softens the hearts of men until they become softer than milk, and verily, Allah strengthens the hearts of men until they become harder than stone. The likeness of you, O Abu Bakr, is like the likeness of Ibrahim, who said, 'And whoever follows me - indeed, he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful' [Al-Ma'idah 118]. And the likeness of you, O Umar, is like the likeness of Isa, who said, 'If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise' [Al-Ma'idah 118]. And the likeness of you, O Umar, is the likeness of Musa, who said, 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment' [Yunus 88]. And the likeness of you, O Umar, is like the likeness of Nuh, who said, 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant'" [Nuh 26]. You are weak, so no one from them should escape except through ransom or killing. Ibn Mas'ud said, "O Messenger of Allah, except for Suhail ibn Bayda, for I heard him mention Islam." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then remained silent, and I have never seen myself fearing stones falling from the sky upon me as I did on that day until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Except for Suhail ibn Bayda." Allah revealed, "It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land" [Al-Anfal 67], until the end of the three verses.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا تَقُولُونَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْأُسَارَى؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَوْمُكَ وَأَصْلُكَ اسْتَبْقِهِمْ وَاسْتَتِبْهُمْ؛ لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَذَّبُوكَ وَأَخْرَجُوكَ قَدِّمْهُمْ فَاضْرِبْ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْتَ فِي وَادٍ كَثِيرِ الْحَطَبِ فَأَضْرِمِ الْوَادِي عَلَيْهِمْ نَارًا ثُمَّ أَلْقِهِمْ فِيهِ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَدَخَلَ فَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عُمَرَ وَقَالَ نَاسٌ يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَيُلِينُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَلْيَنَ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَيُشَدِّدُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَشَدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ {وَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ عِيسَى قَالَ {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ} [المائدة 118] وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ مَثَلُ مُوسَى قَالَ {رَبَّنَا اطْمِسَ عَلَى أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى يَرَوَا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ} [يونس 88] وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ نُوحٍ قَالَ {رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا} [نوح 26] أَنْتُمْ عَالَةٌ؛ فَلَا يَنْفَلِتَنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا بِفِدَاءٍ أَوْ ضَرْبَةِ عُنُقٍ فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ؛ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَذْكُرُ الْإِسْلَامَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَمَا رَأَيْتُنِي فِي يَوْمٍ أَخْوَفَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَيَّ حِجَارَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِنِّي فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ حَتَّى قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا سُهَيْلَ بْنَ بَيْضَاءَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى} [الأنفال 67] إِلَى آخِرِ الثَّلَاثِ الْآيَاتِ

[AI] When the spoils from Iraq were brought to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), the treasurer of the Bayt al-Mal (the Public Treasury) said to him, "I will put it in the Bayt al-Mal." Umar replied, "No, by the Lord of the Kāba, it will not be housed under a roof until I have distributed it." He ordered that it be placed in the mosque and covered it with leather to guard it with men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar. The next morning, he went there with Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib and Abdur Rahman ibn Awf. He took the hand of one of them or one of them took his hand. When they saw him, they uncovered the leather from the wealth, and he saw a sight unlike any he'd seen before: gold, rubies, beryl, and pearls gleaming. He wept. One of them said to him, "By Allah, this is not a day to weep but a day of gratitude and joy." He replied, "By Allah, I do not cry for what you think. By Allah, no people have ever received this much except that conflict arose among them." He then turned towards the Qiblah and raised his hands to the sky, saying, "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from being deceived, for I hear You say {We will gradually lead them to destruction from where they do not know} (Surah Al-A'raf 7:182)." Then he asked, "Where is Suraqah ibn Malik?" Suraqah was brought to him, his arms bare and thin. Umar gave him the bracelets of Khosrow and said, "Wear them." He did so and Umar said, "Say, Allahu Akbar." Suraqah said, "Allahu Akbar." Umar continued, "Say, all praise is due to Allah who took these from Khosrow son of Hormuz and adorned Suraqah ibn Malik, an Arab from the Bani Mudlij." Umar started to turn some of the treasure over and said, "The one who delivered this must indeed be trustworthy." A man said to him, "I will tell you. You are Allah's trustee, and they deliver to you because you deliver to Allah. If you transgress, they will transgress." Umar said, "You spoke the truth," and then he distributed it.

Al-Shafi'i mentioned that Umar gave the bracelets to Suraqah because the Prophet ﷺ once told Suraqah, looking at his arms, "It is as if I can see you wearing the bracelets of Khosrow." Al-Shafi'i also narrated from reliable people of Medina that Umar ibn al-Khattab spent on the people afflicted by famine until rain fell and they could relocate. Umar went out to them riding a horse, watched them as they moved with their belongings, and his eyes filled with tears. A man from the Bani Muharib ibn Khasfah said to him, "I bear witness that this has been a relief for you, and you are not the son of a slave woman." Umar replied, "Woe to you! That would have been true if I had spent on them from my wealth or the wealth of Al-Khattab. I only spent on them from the wealth of Allah, the Exalted."

أَنَّهُ لَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ مَا أُصِيبَ مِنَ الْعِرَاقِ قَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُ بَيْتِ الْمَالِ أَنَا أُدْخِلُهُ بَيْتَ الْمَالِ قَالَ لَا وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ لَا يُؤْوَى تَحْتَ سَقْفِ بَيْتٍ حَتَّى أَقْسِمَهُ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَوُضِعَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَوُضِعَتْ عَلَيْهَا الْأَنْطَاعُ وَحَرَسَهُ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ غَدَا مَعَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ أَحَدِهِمَا أَوْ أَحَدُهُمَا أَخَذَ يَدَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ كَشَطُوا الْأَنْطَاعَ عَنِ الْأَمْوَالِ فَرَأَى مَنْظَرًا لَمْ يَرَ مِثْلَهُ رَأَى الذَّهَبَ فِيهِ وَالْيَاقُوتَ وَالزَّبَرْجَدَ وَاللُّؤْلُؤَ يَتَلَأْلَأُ فَبَكَى فَقَالَ لَهُ أَحَدُهُمَا إِنَّهُ وَاللهِ مَا هُوَ بِيَوْمِ بُكَاءٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ يَوْمُ شُكْرٍ وَسُرُورٍ فَقَالَ إِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا ذَهَبْتُ حَيْثُ ذَهَبْتُ وَلَكِنَّهُ وَاللهِ مَا كَثُرَ هَذَا فِي قَوْمٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا وَقَعَ بَأْسُهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقِبْلَةِ وَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَقَالَ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ مُسْتَدْرَجًا؛ فَإِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ تَقُولُ {سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ} [الأعراف 182] ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيْنَ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ جُعْشُمٍ؟ فَأُتِيَ بِهِ أَشْعَرَ الذِّرَاعَيْنِ دَقِيقَهُمَا فَأَعْطَاهُ سِوَارَيْ كِسْرَى فَقَالَ الْبَسْهُمَا فَفَعَلَ فَقَالَ قُلِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي سَلَبَهُمَا مِنْ كِسْرَى بْنِ هُرْمُزَ وَأَلْبَسَهُمَا سُرَاقَةَ بْنَ جُعْشُمٍ أَعْرَابِيًّا مِنْ بَنِي مُدْلِجٍ وَجَعَلَ يُقَلِّبُ بَعْضَ ذَلِكَ بَعْضًا فَقَالَ إِنَّ الَّذِي أَدَّى هَذَا لَأَمِينٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَنَا أُخْبِرُكَ أَنْتَ أَمِينُ اللهِ وَهُمْ يُؤَدُّونَ إِلَيْكَ مَا أَدَّيْتَ إِلَى اللهِ فَإِذَا رَتَعْتَ رَتَعُوا قَالَ صَدَقْتَ ثُمَّ فَرَّقَهُ قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ وَإِنَّمَا أَلْبَسَهُمَا سُرَاقَةَ؛ لِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِسُرَاقَةَ وَنَظَرَ إِلَى ذِرَاعَيْهِ كَأَنِّي بِكَ قَدْ لَبِسْتَ سُوَارَيْ كِسْرَى قَالَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ إِلَّا سِوَارَيْنِ قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا الثِّقَةُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ أَنْفَقَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ عَلَى أَهْلِ الرَّمَادَةِ حَتَّى وَقَعَ مَطَرٌ فَتَرَحَّلُوا فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ عُمَرُ ؓ رَاكِبًا فَرَسًا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَهُمْ يَتَرَحَّلُونَ بِظَعَائِنِهِمْ فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي مُحَارِبِ بْنِ خَصْفَةَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّهَا انْحَسَرَتْ عَنْكَ وَلَسْتَ بِابْنِ أَمَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ ؓ وَيْلَكَ ذَلِكَ لَوْ كُنْتُ أَنْفَقْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ مَالِي أَوْ مِنْ مَالِ الْخَطَّابِ إِنَّمَا أَنْفَقْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللهِ ﷻ

He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."

رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَابَ بِأَيَّامٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَقَفَ عَلَى حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ وَعُثْمَانَ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ فَعَلْتُمَا تَخَافَانِ أَنْ تَكُونَا قَدْ حَمَّلْتُمَا الْأَرْضَ مَا لَا تُطِيقُ؟ قَالَا حَمَّلْنَاهَا أَمْرًا هِيَ لَهُ مُطِيقَةٌ وَقَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ لَوْ حَمَّلْتُ عَلَيْهَا أُضْعِفَتْ وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ حَمَّلْتُهَا أَمْرًا هِيَ لَهُ مُطِيقَةٌ مَا فِيهَا كَبِيرُ فَضْلٍ قَالَ انْظُرْ أَلَّا تَكُونَا حَمَّلْتُمَا الْأَرْضَ مَا لَا تُطِيقُ قَالَا لَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ لَئِنْ سَلَّمَنِي اللهُ لَأَدَعَنَّ أَرَامِلَ الْعِرَاقِ لَا يَحْتَجْنَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ بَعْدِي قَالَ فَمَا أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَرْبَعَةٌ حَتَّى أُصِيبَ قَالَ وَإِنِّي لَقَائِمٌ مَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ إِلَّا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ غَدَاةَ أُصِيبَ قَالَ وَكَانَ إِذَا مَرَّ بَيْنَ الصَّفَّيْنِ قَامَ فَإِنْ رَأَى خَلَلًا قَالَ اسْتَوُوا حَتَّى إِذَا لَمْ يَرَ فِيهِمْ خَلَلًا تَقَدَّمَ فَكَبَّرَ قَالَ وَرُبَّمَا قَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ يُوسُفَ أَوِ النَّحْلِ أَوْ نَحْوِ ذَلِكَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى حَتَّى يَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ قَالَ فَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ كَبَّرَ قَالَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ قَتَلَنِي الْكَلْبُ أَوْ أَكَلَنِي الْكَلْبُ حِينَ طَعَنَهُ فَطَارَ الْعِلْجُ بِالسِّكِّينِ ذَاتِ طَرَفَيْنِ لَا يَمُرُّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ يَمِينًا وَلَا شِمَالًا إِلَّا طَعَنَهُ حَتَّى طَعَنَ ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا فَمَاتَ مِنْهُمْ تِسْعَةٌ فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ طَرَحَ عَلَيْهِ بُرْنُسًا فَلَمَّا ظَنَّ الْعِلْجُ أَنَّهُ مَأْخُوذٌ نَحَرَ نَفْسَهُ قَالَ وَتَنَاوَلَ عُمَرُ يَدَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ ا فَقَدَّمَهُ قَالَ فَمَنْ يلِي عُمَرَ ؓ فَقَدْ رَأَى الَّذِي رَأَى وَأَمَّا نَوَاحِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَدْرُونَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُمْ فَقَدُوا صَوْتَ عُمَرَ ؓ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ؓ صَلَاةً خَفِيفَةً فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفُوا قَالَ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ انْظُرْ مَنْ قَتَلَنِي فَجَالَ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ غُلَامُ الْمُغِيرَةِ فَقَالَ الصَّنِعُ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ قَاتَلَهُ اللهُ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَمَرْتُ بِهِ مَعْرُوفًا فَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَمْ يجْعَلْ مِيتَتِي بِيَدِ رَجُلٍ يَدَّعِي الْإِسْلَامَ وَقَالَ قَدْ كُنْتَ أَنْتَ وَأَبُوكَ تُحِبَّانِ أَنْ تَكْثُرَ الْعُلُوجُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ وَكَانَ الْعَبَّاسُ ؓ أَكْثَرَهُمْ رَقِيقًا فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَعَلْنَا أَيْ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَتَلْنَا قَالَ كَذَبْتَ بَعْدَمَا تَكَلَّمُوا بِلِسَانِكُمْ وَصَلَّوْا قِبْلَتَكُمْ وَحَجُّوا حَجَّكُمْ فَاحْتُمِلَ إِلَى بَيْتِهِ فَانْطَلَقْنَا مَعَهُ قَالَ وَكَأَنَّ النَّاسَ لَمْ تُصِبْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَبْلَ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَقَائِلٌ يَقُولُ لَا بَأْسَ وَقَائِلٌ يَقُولُ نَخَافُ عَلَيْهِ فَأُتِيَ بِنَبِيذٍ فَشَرِبَهُ فَخَرَجَ مِنْ جُرْحِهِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِلَبَنٍ فَشَرِبَهُ فَخَرَجَ مِنْ جُرْحِهِ فَعَرَفُوا أَنَّهُ مَيِّتٌ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي وَصَايَاهُ وَأَمْرِ الشُّورَى

Their whales would come to them on their Sabbath, prepared like eggplants with fins, resembling the shape and appearance of their offspring. But on days other than the Sabbath, they would not find any whales unless they exerted great effort and struggled to catch them. So some of them said to each other, or someone among them said, "If we take them on a day other than the Sabbath and eat them, let us do it." So a certain group from among them did so, and they took and ate them. Then their neighbors noticed the smell of cooking from the whales and said, "By Allah, we do not see that the family of so-and-so has experienced anything." So others among them also took and ate them, until this became widespread among them and prevalent. They split into three groups: one group that would eat, one group that would forbid, and one group that would say, "Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?" (Al-A'raf 164). The group that forbade said, "Indeed, we warn you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." But we will not reveal our secrets to you when you are in this place." So they went out of the city and stayed there overnight. They returned the next day and knocked on the city gate, but no one answered them. So they brought a ladder and leaned it against the city gate. Then one of them climbed atop the gate and said, "O servants of Allah, it is a group of monkeys, and by Allah, they have tails." Then he came down from the gate, and they opened the gate and the people entered. The monkeys realized that they were descended from humans, but the humans did not realize that they were descended from monkeys. A human would come to his relative or close one among the monkeys, touch him, cling to him, and say, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" The monkey would nod his head, meaning "yes," and the human would cry. The monkey would go to his relative or close one among the humans, and the human would say to her, "You are so-and-so, aren't you?" She would nod her head, meaning "yes," and she would cry. Then the humans said to them, "Indeed, we warned you of the wrath of Allah and His punishment, that Allah may strike you with a calamity, or smite you with one of the punishments He has for you." Ibn 'Abbas said, "Then Allah said, 'So We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized those who did wrong with a severe punishment because of their disobedience.' (Al-A'raf 165). So I do not know what happened to the third group." Ibn 'Abbas said, "How many times have we seen something forbidden and not prevented it?" 'Ikrimah said, "So I said, 'Do you not see that Allah has made me your intercessor, that they have denied and disliked when they said, 'Why do you warn a people whom Allah is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?' (Al-A'raf 164).' He was pleased with my words and ordered two heavy coats for me, and I wore them."

Abdurrahman also swore, 'By my Lord,' and said, 'So then, just as I said to the Prince, I don't have anything other than these two bags.' Hajjaj said, 'This is unacceptable from you, take him to prison.' So, Abdurrahman was imprisoned, and in the prison, there were monks from the people of Sham. Abdurrahman saw something he had never seen before. If he was standing to pray, he would pray, and if he was not praying, he would stand alone, glorify Allah, and mention Allah. The Shamite saw something unfamiliar to him, so if he was a well person, what would he say to his Lord when he meets Him? He had a righteous man in this prison, and he didn't know if he was oppressed, so he sent a message to Abdurrahman and said, 'Indeed, Hajjaj is a person whom you know, and I am taking the risk for you to set a time with me. If Allah has saved me from my illness, then you can return to your imprisonment until Allah brings relief to you. And if I die, then you have saved yourself. I don't want you to swear for me.' Abdurrahman said to him, 'You have that.' So, he disguised himself and dressed in women's clothing between two women. While he was walking, a man riding his donkey approached him. When he reached him, he greeted him and said, 'Peace be upon you.' Then he got off and said to him, 'Ride, may Allah have mercy on you.' One of the two women answered him, 'We are women, we need it. Ride your beast, may Allah have mercy on you.' He said, 'There is no deity except Allah, I don't have any intention towards you.' She said, 'When Abdurrahman thought that he had understood, he said, 'Let's ride,' and he left for his home. The Shamite, the owner of the prison, died. We witnessed it around the donkey and we didn't find anyone who recognized it."

أَنْ يُشْخِصَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَشْخَصَهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَلَى الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ أَنْتَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ قَالَ لَا أَخَالُ الْأَمِيرَ دَعَانِي إِلَّا وَقَدْ عَرِفَ اسْمِي قَالَ أَجَلْ قَالَ مَا لِفُلَانٍ عِنْدَكَ؟ قَالَ عِنْدِي جِرَابَانِ مِنْ وَرِقٍ قَالَ لَهُ عِنْدَكَ غَيْرُهُمَا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ مَا لِفُلَانٍ عِنْدَكَ إِلَّا هَذَانَ الْجِرَابَانِ؟ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ رَبِّي مَا كَذَبْتُ الْأَمِيرَ قَالَ وَكَانَتْ يَمِينُهُ الَّتِي يَحْلِفُ بِهَا إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَحْلِفَ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ رَبِّي قَالَ فَهُوَ كَمَا يَقُولُ لِلْأَمِيرِ مَا لَهُ عِنْدِي غَيْرُهُمَا قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا غَيْرُ مَقْبُولٍ مِنْكَ اذْهَبُوا بِهِ إِلَى السِّجْنِ قَالَ فَحُبِسَ فِي السِّجْنِ وَعَلَى السِّجْنِ نَاسِكٌ مِنْ نُسَّاكِ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ قَالَ فَرَأَى شَيْئًا لَمْ يَرَ مِثْلَهُ إِنْ كَانَ فِي حِينٍ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَهُوَ فِيهِ رَاتِبٌ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي وَإِنْ كَانَ حِينٌ لَا يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَهُوَ مُنْتَبِذٌ وَحْدَهُ يُسَبِّحُ وَيُكَبِّرُ وَيُذْكُرُ اللَّهَ ﷻ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَلْبَثِ الشَّامِيُّ أَنْ مَرِضَ فَقَالَ مَا أَقُولُ لِرَبِّي ﷻ إِذَا لَقِيتُهُ وَهَذَا الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ فِي هَذَا الْحَبْسِ لَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهُ مَظْلُومٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْحَجَّاجَ مَنْ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ وَأَنَا مُخْلٍ سَبِيلَكَ عَلَى أَنْ تَعِدَنِي مِنْكَ مَوْعِدًا إِنِ اللَّهُ ﷻ نَجَّانِي مِنْ مَرَضِي هَذَا أَنْ تَعُودَ إلى مَحْبَسِكَ فَتَكُونَ فِيهِ حَتّى يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكَ فَرَجًا وإنْ مِتُّ كُنْتَ قَدْ نَجَوْتَ بِنَفْسِكَ، لَسْتُ أُرِيدُ أنْ تَحْلِفَ لِي فَقالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: لَكَ ذَلِكَ قالَ: فَخَرَجَ مُتَنَكِّرًا حَتّى لَبِسَ ثِيابَ النِّساءِ مُتَنَكِّرًا بَيْنَ امْرَأتَيْنِ، فَبَيْنَما هُوَ يَمْشِي عَرَضَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ راكِبٌ عَلى بَغْلَتِهِ فَلَمّا انْتَهى إلَيْهِ قالَ لَهُ: سَلامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَقالَ: ارْكَبْ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ فَأجابَتْهُ إحْدى المَرْأتَيْنِ إنَّما نَحْنُ نِسْوَةٌ أقْبَلْنا فِي حاجَةٍ لَنا، ارْكَبْ دابَّتَكَ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ قالَ: لا إلَهَ إلّا اللَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي عَيْنٌ قالَ: فَلَمّا ظَنَّ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ أنَّهُ قَدْ انْتَبَهَ قالَ: فَرَكِبَ فانْطَلَقَ إلى مَنزِلِهِ قالَ: وماتَ الشّامِيُّ صاحِبُ السِّجْنِ قالَ: فَنَشْهَدُها حَوْلًا يَعْنِي البَغْلَةَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ أحَدًا يَعْرِفُها

"إِنَّ الله ﷻ لَيُلِينُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ حتَّى تَكُونَ أَلْيَنَ من اللَّبَن ، وإِنَّ الله ﷻ لَيَشُدَّ قُلُوبَ رِجَال فيهِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَشدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ، وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ إِبْرَاهيمَ. قَال: {فَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ } وَمَثَلُكَ يَا أَبا بَكْر كَمَثَلِ عِيسَى. قَال: {إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ } وإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ نُوح قَال: {رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا} ، وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ مُوسى قَال: {رَبَّنَا اطْمِسْ عَلَى أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ} " أَنتم عَالةٌ، فَلا يَنْفَلِتَنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إلا بِفِدَاءٍ، أَوْ ضَربةِ عنق إلا سُهيل بن بَيضَاءَ".

"عن البراء بن عازب قال: "اشْتَرَى أبُو بَكْرٍ مِن عَازِبٍ سَرْجًا بِثَلاثَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِعَازِبٍ: مُرِ الْبَرَاءَ فَيَحْمِلَهُ إِلَى مَنْزِلِى، فَقَالَ: لا؛ حَتَّى تُحَدِّثَنَا كَيْفَ صَنَعْتَ حِينَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنْتَ مَعَهُ، فَقَالَ أبُو بَكْرٍ: خَرَجْنَا فَأدْلَجْنَا فَأَحْثَثْنَا يَوْمَنَا وَلَيْلَتَنَا حَتَّى أَظْهَرْنَا وَقَامَ قَائِمُ الظَّهِيرَةِ فَضَربْتُ بِبَصَرِى هَلْ أَرَى ظِلا نَأوِى إِلَيْهِ، فَإِذَا أَنَا بِصَخْرَةٍ، فَأَهْوَيْتُ إِلَيْهَا، فَإِذَا بَقِيَّةُ ظِلِّهَا فَسَوَّيْتُهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَفَرَشْتُ لَهُ فَرْوَةً وَقُلْتُ: اضْطجِعْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَاضْطَجَعَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ (أَنْظُرُ) () هَلْ أَرَى أَحَدًا مِنَ الطَّلَبِ، فَإِذَا أَنَا بَرَاعِى غَنَمٍ، فَقُلْتُ: لِمَنْ أَنْتَ يَا غُلامُ؟ فَقَالَ: لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، فَسَمَّاهُ فَعَرَفْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: فَهَلْ فِى غَنَمِكَ مِنْ لَبَنٍ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قُلْتُ: هَلْ أَنْتَ حَالبٌ لِي؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَأَمَرْتُهُ فَاعْتَقَلَ شَاةً مِنْهَا، ثُمَّ أَمَرْتُهُ فَنَفضَ ضِرْعَهَا مِنَ الْغُبَارِ، ثُمَّ أَمَرْتُهُ فَنَفَضَ كَفَّيْهِ مِنَ الْغُبَارِ وَمَعِى إِدَاوَةٌ عَلَى فَمِهَا خِرْقَةٌ فَحَلَبَ لِى كُثْبَةً مِنَ اللَّبَنِ، فَصَبَبْتُ - يَعْنِى الْمَاءَ - عَلَى الْقَدَحِ حَتَّى بَرَدَ أَسْفَلُهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَافَيْتُهُ وَقَدِ اسْتَيْقَظَ فَقُلْتُ: اشْرَبْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَشَرِبَ حَتَّى رَضِيتُ، ثُمَّ قُلتُ: هَلْ أتَى الرَّحِيل؟ فَارْتَحَلْنَا وَالْقَوْمُ يَطْلُبُونَنَا، فَلَمْ يُدْرِكْنَا أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلا سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بن جُعْشُمٍ عَلَى فَرَسٍ لَهُ، فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! هَذَا الطَّلَبُ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا فَقَالَ: لا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا، حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَا مِنَّا فَكَانَ بَيْنَنَا (وبينة) () قَدْرُ رُمْحٍ اوْ رُمْحَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاثَةٍ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! هَذَا الطَّلَبُ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا، وَبَكَيْتُ، قَالَ: لِمَ تَبْكِى؟ فَقُلْتُ: أَمَا وَاللهِ عَلَى نَفْسِى مَا أَبْكِى، وَلَكِنِّى أَبْكِى عَلَيْكَ، فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَ اكْفِنَاهُ بِمَا شِئْتَ، فَسَاخَتْ قَوَائِمُ فَرَسِهِ إِلَى بَطْنِهَا فِي أَرْضٍ صَلْدٍ وَوَثَبِ عَنْهَا، وَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ! قَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ هَذَا عَمَلُكَ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يُنَجَّيَنِى مِمَّا أنَا فِيهِ، فَوَاللهِ لأُعَمِّيَنَّ عَلَى مَنْ وَرَائِى مِنَ الطَّلَبِ، وَهَذِهِ كِنَايَتِى فَخُذْ مِنْهَا سَهْمًا، فَإِنَّكَ سَتَمُرُّ بِإِبِلِى وَغَنَمِى فِى مَوْضِعِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَخُذْ مِنْهَا حَاجَتكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا حَاجَة لِى فِيهَا، وَدَعَا لَهُ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَأُطْلِقَ وَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ، وَمَضى رَسُولُ

اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ لَيْلًا، فَتَلَقَّاهُ النَّاسُ، فَخَرَجُوا فِى الطَّريقِ وَعَلَى الأَحَاجِيرِ، وَاشتَدَّ الْخَدَمُ وَالصِّبْيَانُ فِى الطَّرِيقِ (يَقُولَونَ) (*): اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ : جَاءَ مُحَمَّدٌ، وَتَنَازَعَ الْقَوْمُ أَيُّهُمْ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ أَنْزِلُ اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى بَنِى النَّجَّارِ أَخْوَالِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ لأُكْرِمَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا أصْبَحَ غَدَا حَيْثُ أُمِرَ".

"لما كان يوم بدر نظر النبي ﷺ إلى أصحابه وهم ثَلَاثُمِائَةٍ ونيف، ونظر إلى المشركين، فإذا هم ألف وزيادة فاستقبل النبي ﷺ القبلة، ومد يديه وعليه رداؤه وإزاره، ثم قال: اللهم أنجز ما وعدتني، اللهم إن تهلك هذه العصابة - من أهل الإسلام - فلا تعبد في الأرض أبدا، فما زال يستغيث ربه ويدعوه حتى سقط رداؤه، فأتاه أبو بكر فأخذ رداءه فرداه ثم التزمه من ورائه، ثم قال: يا نبي الله كفاك مناشدَتَك ربك فإنه سينجز لك ما وعدك، وأنزل الله: {إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُمْ بِأَلْفٍ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ مُرْدِفِينَ} فلما كان يومئذ والتقوا هزم الله المشركين وقُتِلَ منهم سبعون رجلا، وأسر منهم سبعون رجلًا، فاستشار رسول الله ﷺ أبا بكر وعليا وعمر فقال أبو بكر: يا نبي الله: هؤلاء بنو العم والعشيرة والإخوان، وإني أري أن تأخذَ منهم الفدية، فيكون ما أخذنا منهم قوة لنا على الكفار، وعسي أن يهديَهم فيكونوا لنا عضدا، فقال رسول الله ﷺ : ما ترى؟ قلت: والله ما أرى الذي رأى أبو بكر ولكن أرى أن تمكني من فلان - قريب لعمر - فأضرب عنقَه، وتمكن عليا من عقيل فيضربَ عنقه، وتمكن حمزة من فلان أخيه فيضرب عنقه، حتى يعلم الله أنه ليست في قلوبنا مودة للمشركين، هؤلاءِ صناديدُهم وأئمتهم وقادتهم، فهوى رسول الله ﷺ ما قال أبو بكر، ولم يهو ما قلت، فأخذ منهم الفداء، فلما كان من الغدِ غدوت على النبي ﷺ فإذا هو قاعد وأبو بكر يبكيان، فقلت: يا رسول الله: أخبرني ماذا يبكيك أنت وصاحبك؟ فإن وجدت بكاءً بكيت، وإن لم أجد تباكيت لبكائكما، فقال النبي ﷺ للذي عرض على أصحابك من الفداء، لقد عرض على عذابكم أدنى من هذه الشجرة: الشجرة قريبة، فأنزل الله: {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ

يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ (67) لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ} ثم أحل لهم الغنائم، فلما كان يوم أحد من العام المقبل عوقبوا بما صنعوا يوم بدر من أخذهم الفداء فقتل منهم سبعون، وفر أصحاب النبي ﷺ وكسرت رباعيته وهشمت البيضة على رأسه، وسال الدم على وجهه، وأنزل الله: {أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّى هَذَا قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} بأخذكم الفداء".

"عَنِ الحَارِث بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَلَقِيتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَ لِعَلىٍّ مَنْقَبَةً؟ قَالَ: قَدْ شَهِدْتُ لَهُ أَرْبَعًا، لأَنْ يَكُونَ لِى إِحْدَاهُنَّ أَحَبّ إِلَىَّ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا أُعَمَّرُ فِيهَا مَا عُمِّرَ نُوحٌ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ببَراءَة إِلَى مُشْرِكِى قُرَيْشٍ فَسَارَ بِهَا يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِعَلىٍّ: إلْحَقْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَخُذْهَا مِنْهُ فَبلِّغْهَا، وَرَدَّ عَلىٌّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ، فَرَجَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ نَزَلَ فِىَّ شَىْءٌ؟ قَالَ: لَا. إِلَّا خَيْرٌ، إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ يُبَلِّغُ عنِّى إِلَّا أَنَا أَوْ رَجُلٌ مِنِّى أَوْ قَالَ: مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِى، قَالَ: وَكُنَّا مَع رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِى الْمَسْجدِ فَنُودِىَ فِينَا لَيْلًا: يَخْرُجُ مَنْ فِى الْمَسَجِدِ إلَّا آلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وآلَ عَلِىٍّ فَخَرَجْنَا نَحْنُ فلاعنا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا أَتَى العَبَّاسُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَخْرَجْتَ أعْمَامَكَ وَأَصْحَابَكَ وَأَسْكَنْتَ هَذَا الغُلَامَ، قَالَ: مَا أَنَا أَمَرْتُ بِإِخْرَاجِكُمْ وَلَا إِسكَانِ هَذَا الغُلَامِ، إِنَّ اللهَ هُوَ الآمِرُ بِهِ، قَالَ: والثَّالِثَةُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ عُمَرَ وَسَعْدًا إلى خَيْبَرَ فَخَرَجَ سَعْدٌ وَرَجَعَ عُمَرُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لأُعْطِينَّ الرَّايَةَ رَجُلًا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ويُحِبُّهُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ فِى ثَنَاءٍ كثِيرٍ، أَخْشَى أَنْ أُخْطِئَ فىِ بَعْضِهِ، والرَّابِعَةُ يَوْمَ غَدِيرِ خُمًّ ، قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ! أَلَسْتُ أَوْلَى بِالمُؤْمِنينَ مِنْ أنْفُسِهِمْ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، قَالُوا: بَلَى، قَالَ: ادْنُ يَا عَلِىُّ! فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ وَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَيْهِ حَتَى نَظَرْتُ إِلَى بَيَاضِ آبَاطِهِمَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ كُنْتُ مَوْلَاهُ فَعَلِىٌّ مَوْلَاهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، قَالَ: والخَامِسَةُ مِنْ مَنَاقِبِهِ أَنَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ غَدَا عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ

الْحَمْرَاءِ وَخَلَّفَ عَلِيّا فَنَفِسَتْ بِذَلِكَ قُرَيْشٌ عَلَيْهِ، وَقَالُوا: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ اسْتَثْقَلَهُ وَكَرِهَ صُحْبَتَهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَلِيّا فَجَاءَ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بِغَرْزِ النَّاقَةِ، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! لأَتْبَعَنَّكَ أَوْ قَالَ: إِنِّى لَتَابِعُكَ، زَعَمَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَنَّكَ إنَّمَا خَلَّفْتَنِى، أَنَّك اسْتَثْقَلتَنِى وَكرِهْتَ صُحْبَتِى، وَبَكى عَلِىٌّ فَنَادَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِى النَّاسِ، فاجْتَمَعُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: أَيُّهَا النّاسُ! مَا مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ إلَّا وَلَهُ خامه، أَمَا يُرْضِى ابْنَ أَبِى طَالِبٍ أَنَّكَ مِنِّى بَمْنزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوْسَى، إِلَّا إِنَّهُ لاَ نَبِىَّ بَعْدِى، فَقَالَ عَلِىٌّ: رَضِيتُ عِن اللهِ وَعَنْ رَسُولِهِ".

"عَنْ أَبِى الأَسْوَدِ الدُّؤَلِىِّ أَنَّهُ أَتَى إِلَى عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ فَقَالَ: إِنِّى قَدْ خَاصَمْتُ أَهْلَ الْقَدَر حَتَّى أخْرَجُونِى، فَهَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ حَدِيثٍ لَعَلَّ الله أَنْ يَنْفَعَنِى بِهِ؟ قَالَ: لَعَلِّى إِنْ حَدَّثْتُكَ حَدِيثًا تَلْبِس عَلَيْه أُذُنُكَ صَارَ كَأَنَّكَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْهُ، فَقَالَ: مَا جِئْتُ لِذَلكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنَّ الله تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَوْ عَذَّبَ أَهْلَ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَأَهْلَ الأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعِ عَذَّبَهُمْ وَهُوَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ لَهُمْ، وَلَوْ أَدْخَلَهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِهِ لَكَانَتْ رَحْمَتُه أَوْسَعَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِمْ كمَا قَالَ: {يُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْحَمُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ} (*)، فَمَنْ عَذَّبَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ، وَمَنْ رَحِمَ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ، وَلَوْ كَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ ذَهَبًا أَوْ وَرِقًا أنْفَقَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ الله، وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّه لَمْ يَنْفَعْكَ وَاخْرُجْ فَاسْأَلْ. قَالَ: فَخَرَجْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِذَا بِعَبْدِ الله بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، وَأُبِىِّ بْنِ كعْبٍ فَسَأَلْتُهُمَا، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الله بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: يَا أُبَىُّ! أَخْبِرْهُ، قَالَ أُبَىٌّ: بل أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَخْبِرْ، فَجَاءَ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ لَمْ يَزِدْ قَلِيلًا وَلاَ كثِيرًا كَأَنَّهُ يَسْمَعُ قَوْلَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أُبَىُّ! أكَذَلِكَ تَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ".
