Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to me), "If the property of Bahrain had come to us, I would have given you so much and so much." But the Bahrain property did not come till the Prophet ﷺ had died. When the Bahrain property came. Abu Bakr ordered somebody to announce, "Any person who has money claim on Messenger of Allah ﷺ or whom Messenger of Allah ﷺ had promised something, should come to us." So, I went to him and said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ had promised to give me so much an so much." Abu Bakr scooped up money with both hands thrice for me." (The sub-narrator Sufyan illustrated this action by scooping up with both hands and said, "Ibn Munkadir, another sub-narrator, used to illustrate it in this way.") Narrated Jabir: Once I went to Abu Bakr and asked for the money but he did not give me, and I went to him again, but he did not give me, so I went to him for the third time and said, "I asked you, but you did not give me; then I asked you (for the second time) and you did not give me; then I asked you (for the third time) but you did not give me. You should either give me or allow yourself to be considered a miser regarding my case." Abu Bakr said, "You tell me that I am a miser with regard to you. But really, whenever I rejected your request, I had the inclination to give you." (In another narration Jabir added:) So, Abu Bakr scooped up money with both hands for me and asked me to count it. I found out that It was five hundred. Abu Bakr told me to take twice that amount.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "If the revenue of Al-Bahrain should come, I will give you so much and so much," repeating "so much" thrice. But the revenue of Al-Bahrain did not come till Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died. When the revenue came during the rule of Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr ordered an announcer to announce, "Whoever had any debt or promise due upon the Prophet, should present himself to me (i.e. Abu Bakr). I came to Abu Bakr and informed him that the Prophet ﷺ had said (to me), "If the revenue of Al-Bahrain should come, I will give you so-much and so much," repeating "so much" thrice. So Abu Bakr gave me (in another narration Jaibir said,). I met Abu Bakr after that and asked him (to give me what the Prophet ﷺ had promised me) but he did not give me. I again went to him but he did not give me. I again went to him (for the third time) but he did not give me; On that I said to him, "I came to you but you did not give me, then I came to you and you did not give me, and then again I came to you, but you did not give me; so you should either give me or else you are like a miserly to me, on that, Abu Bakr said, "Do you say, 'You are like a miserly to me?' There is no worse disease than miserliness." Abu Bakr said it thrice and added, "Whenever I refused to give you, I had the intention of giving you." (In another narration) Jabir bin ʿAbdullah said, "I went to Abu Bakr (and he gave me a handful of money) and told me to count it, I counted and found it five-hundred, and then Abu Bakr said (to me), "Take the same amount twice."

ahmad:14301Sufyān > Ibn al-Munkadir Jābir

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will surely give you this and this and this." Abu Bakr said, after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away and the wealth of Bahrain came, "Whoever had a debt or a promise with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , let them come to us." So, I came and said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will surely give you this and this and this three times.'" He (Abu Bakr) said, "Take it." So, I took it and some people who heard about it found it to be five hundred (dirhams). I took it and went to him (Abu Bakr), but he did not give me anything. Then, I went to him again, but he did not give me anything. Then, I went to him for the third time and he did not give me anything. So, I said, "Either you should give me or be stingy towards me." He said, "Did you say that I am being stingy towards you? And which disease is worse than stinginess? Whenever you asked me for something, I always wanted to give it to you."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "When the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will give you this and this and this." He said this, but the wealth of Bahrain did not come until the Prophet ﷺ passed away. Then the wealth of Bahrain arrived, and Abu Bakr said, "Whoever has a debt or a promise with the Prophet ﷺ should come forward." So I went to Abu Bakr and said to him, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ promised me that when the wealth of Bahrain arrives, he will give me this and this and this," meaning three amounts. He said, "Take it." So I took it, and he said, "Count it." So I counted it, and it was five hundred (units). He said, "Take it twice as much." Ibn Al-Munkadir added, "I went to him (meaning Abu Bakr) once and asked him, but he did not give me. Then I went to him a second time and asked him, but he did not give me. So I said, 'I have asked you twice and you have not given me. Either you give me or you hoard.' He said, 'Whenever you come to me, I want to give you. What disease is worse than hoarding?' Isaac (one of the narrators) said, 'Sufyan or someone similar informed me in this way.'"
