ʿAli offered the Zuhr prayer and then sat down in the wide courtyard (of the Mosque) of Kufa in order to deal with the affairs of the people till the ʿAsr prayer became due. Then water was brought to him and he drank of it, washed his face, hands, head and feet. Then he stood up and drank the remaining water while he was standing. and said, "Some people dislike to drink water while standing thought the Prophet did as I have just done."

أَنَّهُ صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ فِي حَوَائِجِ النَّاسِ فِي رَحَبَةِ الْكُوفَةِ حَتَّى حَضَرَتْ صَلاَةُ الْعَصْرِ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِمَاءٍ فَشَرِبَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ وَذَكَرَ رَأْسَهُ وَرِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَشَرِبَ فَضْلَهُ وَهْوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَكْرَهُونَ الشُّرْبَ قَائِمًا وَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعْتُ

"I saw 'Ali (may Allah be please with him) praying Zuhr, then he sat to tend to the people's needs, and when the time for 'Asr came, a vessel of water was brought to him. He took a handful of it and wiped his face, forearms, head and feet with it, then he took what was left and drank standing up. He said: 'People dislike this, but I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing it. This is the Wudu' of one who has not committed Hadath."

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ لِحَوَائِجِ النَّاسِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الْعَصْرُ أُتِيَ بِتَوْرٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ كَفًّا فَمَسَحَ بِهِ وَجْهَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَرَأْسَهُ وَرِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ فَضْلَهُ فَشَرِبَ قَائِمًا وَقَالَ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَكْرَهُونَ هَذَا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُهُ وَهَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ

A jug of water was brought to ʿAli ؓ when he was in ar-Rahbah. He took a handful of water and rinsed his mouth and nose, and wiped his face, forearms and head. Then he drank whilst standing, then he said: This is the wudooʿ of one who has not broken his wudooʿ. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do this.

أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ وَهُوَ فِي الرَّحْبَةِ فَأَخَذَ كَفًّا مِنْ مَاءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَمَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَرَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ

Some people dislike drinking whilst standing, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did what I have done, and this is the wudoo’ of one who has not broken his wudoo’. An-Nazzal bin Sabrah said. I heard ‘Ali ؓ ... and he narrated a similar hadeeth, except that he said: An earthenware jar with a handle was brought to him.

أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ عَلِيًّا صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ فِي حَوَائِجِ النَّاسِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الْعَصْرُ أُتِيَ بِتَوْرٍ فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةَ مَاءٍ فَمَسَحَ يَدَيْهِ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَوَجْهَهُ وَرَأْسَهُ وَرِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَضْلَهُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يَشْرَبُوا وَهُمْ قِيَامٌ وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَنَعَ كَمَا صَنَعْتُ وَهَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ

A vessel of water was brought to ‘Ali ؓ and he drank whilst standing, then he said: I have heard that some people dislike it if one of them drinks whilst standing. But I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do what I have done. Then he took some of the water and wiped himself. Then he said. This is the wudooʿ of one who has not broken his wudoo’.

أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ أَقْوَامًا يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ أَحَدُهُمْ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلْتُ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ مِنْهُ فَتَمَسَّحَ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ

[AI] We prayed with Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, the afternoon prayer. Then we went out to the open area where he called for a container with a drink in it. He took it and rinsed his mouth, inhaled it into his nostrils, wiped his face, his arms, his head, and his feet. Then he drank the remaining of it while standing. Then he said, "Indeed, there are people who dislike to drink while standing. However, the Messenger of Allahﷺ performed similar to what I have done, and this is the ablution of one who did not invalidate it."

صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ عَلِيٍّ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ خَرَجْنَا إِلَى الرَّحَبَةِ فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فِيهِ شَرَابٌ فَأَخَذَهُ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَمَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَرَأْسَهُ وَقَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَضْلَهُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يَشْرَبُوا وَهُمْ قِيَامٌ «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعْتُ وَهَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ»

[AI] We prayed Dhuhr with Ali, then we went out to the spacious area. He called for a container containing a drink, and he took it. He rinsed his mouth, snorted water up his nose, wiped his face, arms, head, and feet. Then he drank from the remaining water while standing. Then he said, "Indeed, there are people who dislike drinking while standing, and they are standing. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same as I did and said, 'This is the ablution for those who have not performed ablution.'"

[AI] He prayed the afternoon prayer, then sat in the needs of the people in the spaciousness of Kufa until the afternoon prayer arrived. Then a cup of water was brought to him, so he took a handful and wiped his face, hands, head, and feet with it. Then he stood up and drank the rest while he was standing. Then he said: "Indeed, some people dislike drinking while standing, and indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did as I have done, and he said: 'This is the Wudu' for the one who has not performed Wudu'."

[AI] Ali came with a jug to the open space and drank while standing. He said, "There were people who disliked someone to drink while standing. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing exactly what you saw me doing, and then he touched his face, hands, and feet. Then he said, 'This is ablution for the one who does not do anything that nullifies it.'"

أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ بِإِنَاءٍ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ فَشَرِبَ قَائِمًا قَالَ وَكَانَ أُنَاسٌ يَكْرَهُ أَحَدُهُمْ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ قَائِمًا وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ قَالَ فَأَرَاهُ قَالَ مَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ وَرِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ

" عن النزال بن سبرة قال: أُتِى علِىٌّ بكوز من ماء وهو بالرحبة، فأخذ كفا من ماء، تمضمض، واستنشق، ومسح وجهه وذراعيه، ورأسه ورجليه، ثم شرب فضل الماء وهو قائم، ثم قال: هذا وضوء من لم يحدث، هكذا رأيت رسول الله ﷺ فعل ".

"عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: كَانَ عَلِىٌّ إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ دَعَا بِمَاء فَأَخَذَ كَفًّا مِنْ مَاءٍ فَتَمَضْمَضَ مِنْهُ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ، وَمَسَحَ بِفَضْلِ وَجْهِهِ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ وَرَأسِهِ وَرِجْلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَذَا وضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ".
