Abu Bakr ؓ used to recite in a low voice when he recited, and ‘Umar ؓ recited in a loud voice. When ʿAmmar ؓ recited, he would recite some from one soorah and some from another. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ and he said to Abu Bakr ؓ ; ʿWhy do you recite in a low voice?ʿ He said: Because the One with Whom I am conversing can hear. He said to ʼUmar ؓ : “why do you recite out loud?” He said: To scare the Shaitan and awaken those who are asleep. He said to ‘Ammar ؓ : “Why do you recite some from one soorah and some from another?ʿ He said: Do you hear me mixing with it something that is not part of it? He said: ʿNo.ʿ Then he said: ʿAll of it is good.”

When this verse ʿAnd Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the house (Kaʿbah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for oneʿs conveyance, provision and residence)ʿ [Al-ʿImran 3:97] was revealed, they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is it every year? He remained silent. Then they said: Is it every year? He remained silent, Then they said: Is it every year? He said: ʿNo, if I said yes, it would be obligatory.ʿ Then Allah revealed the words: ʿO you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you troubleʿ [Al-Ma’idah 5:101] up to the end of the Αyah.

He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell us to wipe over the khuffain for one day and night, and for the traveller it is three [days and nights].
