ahmad:812ʿAbdullāh > Muḥammad b. Abū Bakr al-Muqaddamī > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī > ʿAlī

It was narrated from ‘Ali ؓ that On the day of Khaibar, the Prophet ﷺ forbade mutʿah marriage and the flesh of donkeys.  

أحمد:٨١٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ وَعَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ

The killer of az-Zubair is at the door. ‘Ali said: The killer of the son of Safiyyah will certainly enter the Fire. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿEvery Prophet ﷺ has a disciple and my disciple is az-Zubair bin al-Awwam.ʿ  

أحمد:٨١٣حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرٍّ

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا قِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ قَاتِلَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لَيَدْخُلَنَّ قَاتِلُ ابْنِ صَفِيَّةَ النَّارَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيٌّ وَإِنَّ حَوَارِيَّ الزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ

Who here is from Ashjaʿ? Do you know that a Bedouin brought some ostrich eggs and the meat of an onager to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: ʿFeed them to your family, for we are in ihramʿ? They said: Yes indeed. Then ʿUthman turned away from his seat and said: We cannot have it then.  

أحمد:٨١٤حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ نَزَلَ قُدَيْدًا فَأُتِيَ بِالْحَجَلِ فِي الْجِفَانِ شَائِلَةً بِأَرْجُلِهَا فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ وَهُوَ يَضْفِزُ بَعِيرًا لَهُ فَجَاءَ وَالْخَبَطُ يَتَحَاتُّ مِنْ يَدَيْهِ فَأَمْسَكَ عَلِيٌّ وَأَمْسَكَ النَّاسُ فَقَالَ

عَلِيٌّ مَنْ هَا هُنَا مِنْ أَشْجَعَ؟ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ جَاءَهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِبَيْضَاتِ نَعَامٍ وَتَتْمِيرِ وَحْشٍ فَقَالَ أَطْعِمْهُنَّ أَهْلَكَ فَإِنَّا حُرُمٌ ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى فَتَوَرَّكَ عُثْمَانُ عَنْ سَرِيرِهِ وَنَزَلَ فَقَالَ خَبَّثْتَ عَلَيْنَا  

ahmad:815ʿAffān > Shuʿbah > ʿAlī b. Mudrik > Abū Zurʿah b. ʿAmr b. Jarīr > ʿAbdullāh b. Nujay from his father > ʿAlī

“The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.”  

أحمد:٨١٥حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا زُرْعَةَ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلا صُورَةٌ  

ahmad:816ʿAffān > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > Hubayrah > ʿAlī

I heard Hubairah say: I heard ‘Ali ؓ say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to wear gold rings or garments made from a blend of linen and silk, or to use red saddle cloths.  

أحمد:٨١٦حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ سَمِعْتُ هُبَيْرَةَ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمِيثَرَةِ  

ahmad:817ʿAffān > Khālid / al-Ṭaḥḥān > Muṭarrif > Abū Isḥāq > al-Ḥārith > ʿAlī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a man to raise his voice in reciting the Qurʿan before and after ʿlshaʿ, lest he cause his companions to make a mistake in their prayer.”  

أحمد:٨١٧حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ يَعْنِي الطَّحَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا مُطَرِّفٌ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ الرَّجُلُ صَوْتَهُ بِالْقُرْآنِ قَبْلَ الْعَتَمَةِ وَبَعْدَهَا يُغَلِّطُ أَصْحَابَهُ فِي الصَّلاةِ  

ahmad:818ʿAffān > Wuhayb > Ayyūb > ʿIkrimah > ʿAlī b. Abū Ṭālib

ʿBlood money will be paid for the mukatab (a slave with a contract of manumission) commensurate with as much as he had paid off.”  

أحمد:٨١٨حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ يُودَى الْمُكَاتَبُ بِقَدْرِ مَا أَدَّى

It was narrated from ʿAli ؓ that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave Fatimah to him in marriage, he sent with her a velvet garment, a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, two millstones, a waterskin and two earthenware jars.  

أحمد:٨١٩حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمَّا زَوَّجَهُ فَاطِمَةَ بَعَثَ مَعَهُ بِخَمِيلَةٍ وَوِسَادَةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ حَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ وَرَحَيَيْنِ وَسِقَاءٍ وَجَرَّتَيْنِ  

ahmad:820ʿAffān > Ḥammād b. Salamah > al-Ḥajjāj > al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd from his father > Yuḥannas And Ṣafiyyah Kānā from Saby al-Khumus Fazanat Ṣafiyyah Birajul from al-Khumus Fawaladat Ghulām Fāddaʿāh al-Zānī Wayuḥannas Fākhtaṣamā > ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān Farafaʿahumā > ʿAlī b. Abū Ṭālib

I shall pass judgement between them as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed judgement: the child belongs to (the husband) of the women and the fornicator gets nothing. And he gave them fifty lashes each.  

أحمد:٨٢٠حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ يُحَنَّسَ وَصَفِيَّةَ كَانَا مِنْ سَبْيِ الْخُمُسِ فَزَنَتْ صَفِيَّةُ بِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الْخُمُسِ فَوَلَدَتْ غُلامًا فَادَّعَاهُ الزَّانِي وَيُحَنَّسُ فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَرَفَعَهُمَا إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ

عَلِيٌّ أَقْضِي فِيهِا بِقَضَاءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْوَلَدُ لِلْفِرَاشِ وَلِلْعَاهِرِ الْحَجَرُ وَجَلَدَهُمَا خَمْسِينَ خَمْسِينَ  

ahmad:821Yaḥyá b. Ghaylān > al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah > Yazīd b. ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Salamah > ʿAmr b. Sulaym al-Zuraqī from his mother

We were in Mina and we heard someone shouting that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying: ʿDo not fast, for these are days of eating and drinking.” She said: I lifted the edge of the tent and saw that the one who was shouting was ʿAli bin Abi Talib.  

أحمد:٨٢١حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ غَيْلانَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ عَنْ أُمِّهِ قَالَتْ

كُنَّا بِمِنًى فَإِذَا صَائِحٌ يَصِيحُ أَلا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَا تَصُومُنَّ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ أَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ قَالَتْ فَرَفَعْتُ أَطْنَابَ الْفُسْطَاطِ فَإِذَا الصَّائِحُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ  

ahmad:822Saʿīd b. Manṣūr > Ismāʿīl b. Zakariyyā > Ḥajjāj b. Dīnār > al-Ḥakam > Ḥujayyah b. ʿAdī > ʿAlī

It was narrated from ‘Ali that Al-ʿAbbas bin ʿAbdul-Muttalib asked the Prophet ﷺ about paying zakah in advance and he gave him a concession allowing him to do that.  

أحمد:٨٢٢حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ حَجَّاجِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ حُجَيَّةَ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي تَعْجِيلِ صَدَقَتِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَحِلَّ فَرَخَّصَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِك

ʿAli b. Abū Ṭālib said: I sent al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him about the madhī (pre-seminal fluid) that comes out of a man: how should he deal with it? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do wuḍū and sprinkle water on your private parts.”  

أحمد:٨٢٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي مَخْرَمَةُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ

عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَرْسَلْنَا الْمِقْدَادَ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْمَذْيِ يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْإِنْسَانِ كَيْفَ يَفعَلُ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تَوَضَّأْ وَانْضَحْ فَرْجَكَ»

Whilst we were in Mina, I saw ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ on a camel, saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: ʿThese are days of eating and drinking, so no one should fast.ʿ And he followed the people [to convey this message]  

أحمد:٨٢٤حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ عَنْ أُمِّهِ

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ بِمِنًى إِذَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَى جَمَلٍ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ هَذِهِ أَيَّامُ طُعْمٍ وَشُرْبٍ فَلَا يَصُومَنَّ أَحَدٌ فَأَسْمَعَ النَّاسَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Witr at all times of the night, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end, and finally he prayed Witr at the end of the night.  

أحمد:٨٢٥حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ أَنْبَأَنِي غَيْرَ مَرَّةٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ وَأَوْسَطِهِ وَآخِرِهِ وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ  

ahmad:826ʿAffān > Shuʿbah > Salamah b. Kuhayl > Ḥujayyah b. ʿAdī a man from Kindah > a man Saʾal ʿAlī > Innī Āshtarayt Hadhih al-Baqarah Lilʾaḍḥá > Sabʿah > al-Qarn > Lā Yaḍurruk > al-ʿAraj > Idhā Balaghat al-Mansak Fānḥar Thum

I heard a man ask ʿAli ؓ : I bought this cow to offer it as a sacrifice. He said:[It may be offered on behalf of seven people. He said: [What if something is wrong with] the horn? He said: It does not matter. He said: [What if it is] lame? He said: If it can reach the place of sacrifice, then sacrifice it. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to check the eyes and ears.  

أحمد:٨٢٦حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ أَنْبَأَنِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ حُجَيَّةَ بْنَ عَدِيٍّ رَجُلًا مِنْ كِنْدَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَلِيًّا قَالَ إِنِّي اشْتَرَيْتُ هَذِهِ الْبَقَرَةَ لِلْأَضْحَى قَالَ عَنْ سَبْعَةٍ قَالَ الْقَرْنُ قَالَ لَا يَضُرُّكَ قَالَ الْعَرَجُ قَالَ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْمَنْسَكَ فَانْحَرْ ثُمَّ قَالَ

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَسْتَشْرِفَ الْعَيْنَ وَالْأُذُنَ  

ahmad:827ʿAffān > Abū ʿAwānah > Ḥuṣayn > Saʿd b. ʿUbaydah > Tanāzaʿ Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Sulamī And Ḥibbān b. ʿAṭiyyah

Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman as-Sulami and Hibban bin ʿAtiyyah had a dispute. ʿAbdur-Rahman said to Hibban: I know what made your companion - meaning ʿAli ؓ - audacious. He said: What is it, may you be bereft of your father? He said. Something I heard ʿAli ؓ say. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, az-Zubair and Abu Marthad on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: ʿGo to Rawdat Khakh, for there you will find a woman who has a letter with her from Hatib bin Abi Baltaʿah to the mushrikeen; bring it to me.ʿ So we went on our horses until we caught up with her where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us, travelling on a camel of hers. He [Hatib] had written to the people of Makkah, telling them about the march of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We said to her. Where is the letter you have with you? She said: I do not have any letter. We made her camel kneel down and searched her luggage for it, but we did not find anything. My two companions said: We do not see any letter with her, I said: You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not tell a lie. Then I swore: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will give us the letter or we will remove your clothes. She stretched out her hand to her girdle, which was wrapped around her, and brought out the letter. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he has betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers; let me strike his neck. He said: ʿO Hatib, what made you do what you did?ʿ He said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to do a favour for the people by means of which Allah might protect my family and my property, for every one of your Companions has some of his people there through whom Allah will protect his family and his property. He said: You have spoken the truth, do not say anything to him but good.ʿ ʻUmar said: O, Messenger of Allah, he betrayed Allah and His Messenger and the believers, let me strike his neck. He said. ʿls he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon them and said. “Do what you like, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.ʻʼ ʻUmarʻs eyes filled with tears and he said: Allah, may He be exalted, and His Messenger know best.

أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ لِحِبَّانَ قَدْ عَلِمْتُ مَا الَّذِي جَرَّأَ صَاحِبَكَ يَعْنِي عَلِيًّا قَالَ فَمَا هُوَ لَا أَبَا لَكَ؟ قَالَ قَوْلٌ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُهُ قَالَ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالزُّبَيْرَ وَأَبَا مَرْثَدٍ وَكُلُّنَا فَارِسٌ قَالَ انْطَلِقُوا حَتَّى تَبْلُغُوا رَوْضَةَ خَاخٍ فَإِنَّ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً مَعَهَا صَحِيفَةٌ مِنْ حَاطِبِ بْنِ أَبِي بَلْتَعَةَ إِلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَأْتُونِي بِهَا فَانْطَلَقْنَا عَلَى أَفْرَاسِنَا حَتَّى أَدْرَكْنَاهَا حَيْثُ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَسِيرُ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ لَهَا قَالَ وَكَانَ كَتَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِ مَكَّةَبِمَسِيرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا لَهَا أَيْنَ الْكِتَابُ الَّذِي مَعَكِ؟ قَالَتْ مَا مَعِي كِتَابٌ فَأَنَخْنَا بِهَا بَعِيرَهَا فَابْتَغَيْنَا فِي رَحْلِهَا فَلَمْ نَجِدْ فِيهِ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ صَاحِبَايَ مَا نَرَى مَعَهَا كِتَابًا فَقُلْتُ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمَا مَا كَذَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ حَلَفْتُ وَالَّذِي أَحْلِفُ بِهِ لَئِنْ لَمْ تُخْرِجِي الْكِتَابَ لاجَرِّدَنَّكِ فَأَهْوَتْ إِلَى حُجْزَتِهَا وَهِيَ مُحْتَجِزَةٌ بِكِسَاءٍ فَأَخْرَجَتِ الصَّحِيفَةَ فَأَتَوْا بِهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ خَانَ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ دَعْنِي أَضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ قَالَ يَا حَاطِبُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ مَا بِي أَنْ لَا أَكُونَ مُؤْمِنًا بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَلَكِنِّي أَرَدْتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ لِي عِنْدَ الْقَوْمِ يَدٌ يَدْفَعُ اللهُ بِهَا عَنْ أَهْلِي وَمَالِي وَلَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ إِلَّا لَهُ هُنَاكَ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ مَنْ يَدْفَعُ اللهُ تَعَالَى بِهِ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ وَمَالِهِ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ فَلا تَقُولُوا لَهُ إِلا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ خَانَ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ دَعْنِي أَضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ قَالَ أَوَلَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ؟ وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّ اللهَ ﷻ اطَّلَعَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ فَقَدْ وَجَبَتْ لَكُمِ الْجَنَّةُ فَاغْرَوْرَقَتْ عَيْنَا عُمَرَ وَقَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ

ʿThree things, O ‘Ali, you should not delay. They are: prayer when the time comes, funerals when the bier is there, and a single woman, if she finds a compatible match.”  

أحمد:٨٢٨حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ قَالَ

عَبْدُ اللهِ وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْجُهَنِيُّ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ ثَلاثَةٌ يَا عَلِيُّ لَا تُؤَخِّرْهُنَّ الصَّلاةُ إِذَا أَتَتْ وَالْجَنَازَةُ إِذَا حَضَرَتْ وَالْأَيِّمُ إِذَا وَجَدَتْ كُفُؤًا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to wear gold rings, to wear red, and to recite Qurʿan whilst bowing and prostrating.

نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَمْرَاءِ وَعَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ

Some game meat was brought to the Prophet ﷺ when he was in ihram, and he did not eat it.

أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِلَحْمِ صَيْدٍ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ فَلَمْ يَأْكُلْهُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to wear a blend of linen and silk, to use red saddle cloths, to wear clothes dyed with safflower and to recite Qurʿan whilst bowing or prostrating.  

أحمد:٨٣١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْأَجْلَحِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ لِبَاسِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمَيَاثِرِ وَالْمُعَصْفَرِ وَعَنْ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَالرَّجُلُ رَاكِعٌ أَوْ سَاجِدٌ  

ahmad:832ʿAbdullāh

’Abdullah bin Masʿood said: We differed concerning a soorah of the Qurʿan and said; (It is) thirty-five verses or thirty-six. We went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found ‘Ali ؓ conversing with him. We said: We have differed concerning the recitation. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned red and ‘Ali ؓ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is telling you to recite it as you were taught.  

أحمد:٨٣٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجَرْمِيُّ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْكُوفَةِ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ تَمَارَيْنَا فِي سُورَةٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَقُلْنَا خَمْسٌ وَثَلاثُونَ آيَةً سِتٌّ وَثَلاثُونَ آيَةً قَالَ

فَانْطَلَقْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَجَدْنَاعَلِيًّا يُنَاجِيهِ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّا اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ فَاحْمَرَّ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تَقْرَءُوا كَمَا عُلِّمْتُمْ

I heard ‘Ali ؓ say: Shall I not tell you of the best of this ummah after its Prophet ﷺ? [It is] Abu Bakr. Then he said: Shall I not tell you of the best of this ummah after Abu Bakr? [It is] ‘Umar ؓ .  

أحمد:٨٣٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي صَالِحُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ التِّرْمِذِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ قَالَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ زِرٍّ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حُبَيْشٍ عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ أَلا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا؟ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ  

ahmad:834ʿAbdullāh > Abū Ṣāliḥ Hadiyyah b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb Bimakkah > Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd al-Ṭanāfisī > Yaḥyá b. Ayyūb al-Bajalī > al-Shaʿbiyyiʿan Wahbal-Suwāʾī > Khaṭabanā ʿAlī

ʿAli ؓ addressed us and said: Who is the best of this ummah after its Prophet ? I said: You, O Ameer al-Muʿmineen. He said: No, the best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, then ʿUmar ؓ , and it would not be far-fetched to suggest that tranquillity was uttered on the lips of ʿUmar ؓ .  

أحمد:٨٣٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ هَدِيَّةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بِمَكَّةَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الطَّنَافِسِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْبَجَلِيُّ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّعَنْ وَهْبٍ السُّوَائِيِّ قَالَ خَطَبَنَا عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ

مَنْ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا؟ فَقُلْتُ أَنْتَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ لَا خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ وَمَا نُبْعِدُ أَنَّ السَّكِينَةَ تَنْطِقُ عَلَى لِسَانِ عُمَرَ  

ahmad:835Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm > Manṣūr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman / al-Ghudānī al-Ashal > al-Shaʿbī

‘Ali ؓ said: O Abu Juhaifah, shall I not tell you of the best of this ummah after its Prophet ? I said: Yes indeed, He [Abu Juhaifah] said: And I did not think that anyone was better than him. He [ʿAli] said: The best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, and after Abu Bakr it is ‘Umar ؓ , and after both of them there is a third one - but he did not name him.  

أحمد:٨٣٥حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي الْغُدَانِيَّ الْأَشَلَّ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو جُحَيْفَةَ الَّذِي كَانَ عَلِيٌّ يُسَمِّيهِ وَهْبَ الْخَيْرِ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ يَا أَبَا جُحَيْفَةَ أَلا أُخْبِرُكَ بِأَفْضَلِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ وَلَمْ أَكُنْ أَرَى أَنَّ أَحَدًا أَفْضَلُ مِنْهُ قَالَ أَفْضَلُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَبَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ وَبَعْدَهُمَا آخَرُ ثَالِثٌ وَلَمْ يُسَمِّهِ  

ahmad:836ʿAbdullāh > Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Sharīk > Abū Isḥāq > Abū Juḥayfah

ʿAli ؓ said: The best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, and after Abu Bakr it is ‘Umar ؓ , and if I wanted to tell you of the third one, I could do so.  

أحمد:٨٣٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ قَالَ

عَلِيٌّ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَبَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ لَفَعَلْتُ  

ahmad:837ʿAbdullāh > Manṣūr b. Abū Muzāḥim > Khālid al-Zayyāt > ʿAwn b. Abū Juḥayfah

My father was part of the police force of Ali ؓ . He stood beneath the minbar and told me that he, meaning ‘Ali ؓ , ascended the minbar and praised and glorified Allah and sent blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: The best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, and the second is ‘Umar ؓ , And he said: Allah puts goodness wherever He wants.  

أحمد:٨٣٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ أَبِي مُزَاحِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الزَّيَّاتُ حَدَّثَنِي عَوْنُ بْنُ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ

كَانَ أَبِي مِنْ شُرَطِ عَلِيٍّ وَكَانَ تَحْتَ الْمِنْبَرِ فَحَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّهُ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ يَعْنِي عَلِيًّا فَحَمِدَ اللهَ تَعَالَى وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَصَلَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَالَ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَالثَّانِي عُمَرُ وَقَالَ يَجْعَلُ اللهُ تَعَالَى الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ أَحَبَّ  

ahmad:838ʿAffān > Ḥammād > ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib from his father > ʿAlī

By Allah, I have brought water until I felt a pain in my chest. He said: Some captives have been brought to your father, go and ask him for a servant. She said: And I, by Allah, have ground flour until my hands became sore. So she went to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: “What brings you here, O my daughter?” She said: I have come to greet you; and she felt too shy to ask him, so she went back, ‘Ali said: What happened? She said: I felt too shy to ask him. So we went together and I said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah I have brought water until I started to feel pain in my chest. And Fatimah said: I have ground flour until my hands hurt. Allah has brought you plenty of captives, so give us a servant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By Allah, I will not give it to you and leave ahlus-suffah starving when I have nothing to spend on them. Rather I will sell them (the captives) and spend the price on (ahlus-suffah).” So they went back. Then the Prophet ﷺ came, when they were under the cover which, if it covered their heads, it left their feet bare, and if it covered their feet, it left their heads bare. They wanted to get up, but he said: ʿStay where you are.ʿ And then he said: ʿShall I not tell you of something that is better than what you asked for?” They said: Yes. He said: ʿ(It is) words that Jibreel (عليه السلام) taught me.ʿ He said: “Following every prayer, glorify Allah ten times, and praise Him ten times and magnify Him ten times. And when you go to your bed, glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times and magniÍy Him thirty-four times.” He said: By Allah, I never omitted that from the time the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught it to me. Ibnul-Kawwa’ said to him: Not even on the night of Siffeen? He said: May Allah cause your doom, O people of Iraq! Yes, not even on the night of Siffeen.  

أحمد:٨٣٨حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ أَخْبَرَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمَّا زَوَّجَهُ فَاطِمَةَ بَعَثَ مَعَهُ بِخَمِيلَةٍ وَوِسَادَةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ حَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ وَرَحَيَيْنِ وَسِقَاءٍ وَجَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِفَاطِمَةَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ سَنَوْتُ حَتَّى لَقَدِ اشْتَكَيْتُ صَدْرِي قَالَ وَقَدْ جَاءَ اللهُ أَبَاكِ بِسَبْيٍ فَاذْهَبِي فَاسْتَخْدِمِيهِ فَقَالَتْ وَأَنَا وَاللهِ قَدْ طَحَنْتُ حَتَّى مَجَلَتْ يَدَايَ فَأَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا جَاءَ بِكِ أَيْ بُنَيَّةُ؟ قَالَتْ جِئْتُ لِأُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْكَ وَاسْتَحْيَتْ أَنْ تَسْأَلَهُ وَرَجَعَتْ فَقَالَ مَا فَعَلْتِ؟ قَالَتْ اسْتَحْيَيْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ جَمِيعًا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِوَاللهِ لَقَدْ سَنَوْتُ حَتَّى اشْتَكَيْتُ صَدْرِي وَقَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ قَدْ طَحَنْتُ حَتَّى مَجَلَتْ يَدَايَ وَقَدْ جَاءَكَ اللهُ بِسَبْيٍ وَسَعَةٍ فَأَخْدِمْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَاللهِ لَا أُعْطِيكُمَا وَأَدَعُ أَهْلَ الصُّفَّةِ تَطْوَى بُطُونُهُمْ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أُنْفِقُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَبِيعُهُمْ وَأُنْفِقُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَثْمَانَهُمْ فَرَجَعَا فَأَتَاهُمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَقَدْ دَخَلَا فِي قَطِيفَتِهِمَا إِذَا غَطَّتْ رُءُوسَهُمَا تَكَشَّفَتْ أَقْدَامُهُمَا وَإِذَا غَطَّيَا أَقْدَامَهُمَا تَكَشَّفَتْ رُءُوسُهُمَا فَثَارَا فَقَالَ مَكَانَكُمَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمَا بِخَيْرٍ مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَانِي؟ قَالَا بَلَى فَقَالَ كَلِمَاتٌ عَلَّمَنِيهِنَّ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ تُسَبِّحَانِ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ عَشْرًا وَتَحْمَدَانِ عَشْرًا وَتُكَبِّرَانِ عَشْرًا وَإِذَا أَوَيْتُمَا إِلَى فِرَاشِكُمَا فَسَبِّحَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَاحْمَدَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَكَبِّرَا أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ قَالَ فَوَ اللهِ مَا تَرَكْتُهُنَّ مُنْذُ عَلَّمَنِيهِنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ الْكَوَّاءِ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ؟ فَقَالَ قَاتَلَكُمِ اللهُ يَا أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ نَعَمْ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ  

ahmad:839Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Salamah b. Kuhayl > al-Shaʿbī > ʿAlī Jalad Sharāḥah Yawm al-Khamīs And Rajamahā Yawm al-Jumuʿah

I flogged her in accordance with the Book of Allah and stoned her in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.  

أحمد:٨٣٩حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا جَلَدَ شَرَاحَةَ يَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ وَرَجَمَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَقَالَ أَجْلِدُهَا بِكِتَابِ اللهِ وَأَرْجُمُهَا بِسُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ  

ahmad:840Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > ʿAmr b. Murrah > ʿAbdullāh b. Salamah

I entered upon ʿAli bin Abi Talib along with two other men, one man from among my people and another from Banu Asad - I think and he sent us on an errand and said: You are strong people, so use your strength to serve your religion. Then he went to the outhouse and relieved himself. Then he came out and took a handful of water and washed himself with it. Then he started reciting Qurʿan. Then it was as if he realised that we found that strange, so he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to relieve himself, then come out and recite Qurʿan and eat meat with us. Nothing came between him and the Qurʿan except janabah.  

أحمد:٨٤٠حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنَا وَرَجُلانِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ قَوْمِي وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ أَحْسَبُ فَبَعَثَهُمَا وَجْهًا وَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا

عَنْ دِينِكُمَا ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ فَقَضَى حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ فَتَمَسَّحَ بِهَا ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ قَالَ فَكَأَنَّهُ رَآنَا أَنْكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْضِي حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ فَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ  

ahmad:841Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > ʿAmr b. Murrah > ʿAbdullāh b. Salamahaʿan ʿAlī b. Abū Ṭālib

I fell sick and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me when I was saying O Allah, if my time has come then grant me relief; if it has not yet come then raise me in status; and if this is a trial then grant me patience. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What did you say?” He repeated to him what he had said, and he nudged him with his foot and said: ʿO Allah, grant him well beingʿ or “O Allah, heal him.” - Shuʿbah was not certain. He [‘Ali] said: And I never suffered that sickness again after that.  

أحمد:٨٤١حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَعَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ شَاكِيًا فَمَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ أَجَلِي قَدْ حَضَرَ فَأَرِحْنِي وَإِنْ كَانَ مُتَأَخِّرًا فَارْفَعْنِي وَإِنْ كَانَ بَلاءً فَصَبِّرْنِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ قُلْتَ؟ فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ مَا قَالَ قَالَ فَضَرَبَهُ بِرِجْلِهِ وَقَالَ اللهُمَّ عَافِهِ أَوِ اللهُمَّ اشْفِهِ شَكَّ شُعْبَةُ قَالَ فَمَا اشْتَكَيْتُ وَجَعِي ذَاكَ بَعْدُ  

ahmad:842Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > ʿĀṣim b. Ḍamrah > ʿAlī > Lays al-Watr Biḥatm Kālṣṣalāh And Lakinnah Sunnah Falā Tadaʿūh

Witr is not a must like (obligatory) prayer, but it is Sunnah, so do not omit it. Shuʿbah said: I found it written with me: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Witr.  

أحمد:٨٤٢حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ ضَمْرَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

لَيْسَ الْوَتْرُ بِحَتْمٍ كَالصَّلَاةِ وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ فَلَا تَدَعُوهُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَوَجَدْتُهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِنْدِي وَقَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

ahmad:843Aswad b. ʿĀmir > Sharīk > Abū al-Ḥasnāʾ > al-Ḥakam > Ḥanashʿan ʿAlī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me to offer a sacrifice on his behalf, and I will continue to offer a sacrifice on his behalf forever.  

أحمد:٨٤٣حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسْنَاءِ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ حَنَشٍعَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أُضَحِّيَ عَنْهُ فَأَنَا أُضَحِّي عَنْهُ أَبَدًا  

ahmad:844ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Sufyān > Jābir > al-Shaʿbī > al-Ḥārith > ʿAlī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the two who witness it, the one who writes it down, the woman who does tattoos and the woman who gets tattoos done for adornment, the one who withholds zakah, the one who marries a woman and divorces her so that she becomes permissible for her first husband, and the one for whom that is done, And he forbade wailing (for the deceased).  

أحمد:٨٤٤حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ آكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَشَاهِدَيْهِ وَكَاتِبَهُ وَالْوَاشِمَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةَ لِلْحُسْنِ وَمَانِعَ الصَّدَقَةِ وَالْمُحِلَّ وَالْمُحَلَّلَ لَهُ وَكَانَ يَنْهَى عَنِ النَّوْحِ  

ahmad:845ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Sufyān > Jābir > ʿAbdullāh b. Nujay > ʿAlī

I used to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ every morning. If he cleared his throat, I would enter, and if he remained silent, I would not enter. He came out to me (on one occasion) and said: “Something happened last night. I heard some movement in the house, then I saw Jibreel (عليه السلام). I said: ‘What prevented you from entering the house?ʿ He said: “In the house there is a dog.ʿ I went in and I saw a puppy belonging to al-Hasan beneath a chair of ours. He [Jibreel] said: “The angels do not enter a house if there are three things in it: a dog or an image or a person who is junub.ʿ  

أحمد:٨٤٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

كُنْتُ آتِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ فَإِذَا تَنَحْنَحَ دَخَلْتُ وَإِذَا سَكَتَ لَمْ أَدْخُلْ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ حَدَثَ الْبَارِحَةَ أَمْرٌ سَمِعْتُ خَشْخَشَةً فِي الدَّارِ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِجِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ فَقُلْتُ مَا مَنَعَكَ مِنْ دُخُولِ الْبَيْتِ؟ فَقَالَ فِي الْبَيْتِ كَلْبٌ قَالَ فَدَخَلْتُ فَإِذَا جَرْوٌ لِلْحَسَنِ تَحْتَ كُرْسِيٍّ لَنَا قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلائِكَةَ لَا يَدْخُلُونَ الْبَيْتَ إِذَا كَانَ فِيهِ ثَلاثٌ كَلْبٌ أَوْ صُورَةٌ أَوْ جُنُبٌ  

ahmad:846Mūsá b. Dāwud > Zuhayr > Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir > Abū Isḥāq > al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar > ʿAlī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿIf I were to appoint anyone to a position of authority without consultation, I would have appointed Ibn Umm ʿAbd (Abdullah bin Masʿood).ʿ  

أحمد:٨٤٦حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ دَاوُدَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ الْأَعْوَرِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُؤَمِّرًا أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي مِنْ غَيْرِ مَشُورَةٍ لَأَمَّرْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ  

ahmad:847Abū Aḥmad > Rizām b. Saʿīd al-Taymī > Jawwāb al-Taymī > Yazīd b. Sharīk / al-Taymī > ʿAlī

I was a man who emitted a great deal of madhi. I asked the Prophet ﷺ and he said: “If you ejaculate, then do ghusl for janabah, and if you do not ejaculate, then do not do ghusl.”  

أحمد:٨٤٧حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ حَدَّثَنَا رِزَامُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ جَوَّابٍ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ شَرِيكٍ يَعْنِي التَّيْمِيَّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِذَا خَذَفْتَ فَاغْتَسِلْ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ وَإِذَا لَمْ تَكُنْ خَاذِفًا فَلَا تَغْتَسِلْ  

ahmad:848al-Walīd b. al-Qāsim b. al-Walīd al-Hamdānī > Isrāʾīl > Ibrāhīm / Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Ṭāriq b. Ziyād > Kharajnā Maʿ ʿAlī > al-Khawārij Faqatalahum Thum > Ānẓurūā Faʾin Nabī Allāh ﷺ

We went out with ‘Ali to the Khawarij, and he fought them and killed them. Then he said: Look, for the Prophet ﷺ of Allah said: “There will emerge people who speak the truth but it will not go further than their throats; they will pass out of the truth as the arrow passes through the prey. Their sign is that among them will be a black man with a deformed hand, with black hairs on his hand.” If it is him, you will have killed the worst of people, and if it is not him, you will have killed the best of people.” We wept, then he said: Go and look. So we looked, and we found the one with the deformity. We fell down in prostration and ‘Ali fell down in prostration with us, but he said: ʿThey speak the word of truth.”  

أحمد:٨٤٨حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ عَلِيٍّ إِلَى الْخَوَارِجِ فَقَتَلَهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ انْظُرُوا فَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ قَوْمٌ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَلْقَهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ سِيمَاهُمْ أَنَّ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا أَسْوَدَ مُخْدَجَ الْيَدِ فِي يَدِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ سُودٌ إِنْ كَانَ هُوَ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ شَرَّ النَّاسِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ هُوَ فَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمْ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ فَبَكَيْنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ اطْلُبُوا فَطَلَبْنَا فَوَجَدْنَا الْمُخْدَجَ فَخَرَرْنَا سُجُودًا وَخَرَّ عَلِيٌّ مَعَنَا سَاجِدًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ بِكَلِمَةِ الْحَقِّ  

ahmad:849Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad > Isrāʾīl > ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAlī

“And instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives you, you deny (Him by disbelief)ʿ [al-Waqiʿah 56.82]: you say, ‘We were given rain by such-and-such a star.” It was narrated from ʿAli, in a marfoo’ report: ʿAnd instead (of thanking Allah) for the provision He gives youʿ [al-Waqiʿah 56.82]. Muʼammal said: I said to Sufyan: Israʿeel narrated it in a marfooʿ report (i.e., attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: Boys, boys.  

أحمد:٨٤٩حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ {وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ} [الواقعة 82] يَقُولُ شُكْرَكُمْ {أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ} [الواقعة 82] تَقُولُونَ مُطِرْنَا بِنَوْءِ كَذَا وَكَذَا بِنَجْمِ كَذَا وَكَذَا  

ahmad:850Muʾammal > Isrāʾīl > ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAlī Rafaʿah And Tajʿalūn Rizqakum al-Wāqʿh 82 > Muʾammal > Lisufyān In Isrāʾīl Rafaʿah

[Machine] From Ali, he narrated that Allah said, "{And you make your provision.}" [Al-Waqi'ah 82]. Mu'ammar said, I said to Sufyan, "Indeed, Israel (Prophet Jacob) was elevated." He said, "Yes, as a child, as a child."  

أحمد:٨٥٠حَدَّثَنَا مُؤَمَّلٌ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ

عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَفَعَهُ {وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ} [الواقعة 82] قَالَ مُؤَمَّلٌ قُلْتُ لِسُفْيَانَ إِنَّ إِسْرَائِيلَ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ صِبْيَانٌ صِبْيَانٌ  

ahmad:851Ḥasan b. Mūsá > Zuhayr > Abū Isḥāq > Shurayḥ b. al-Nuʿmān

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to examine the eyes and ears [of sacrificial animals] and not to sacrifice one that was blind in one eye, or al-muqabalah, or mudabarah, or sharqaʼ, or kharqaʼ. Zuhair said: I said to Abu Ishaq; Did he mention the one with its nose [or ear or lip] cutoff? He said: No. I said: What is al-muqabalah? He said: One that has the edge of its ears cut. I said: What is al-mudabarah? He said: One whose ears are slit from the back, I said: What is al-sharqa? He said: One whose ears are slit in two lengthwise, I said: What is al-kharqaʿ? He said:One that has a round hole in its ear as a distinguishing mark.  

أحمد:٨٥١حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ وَكَانَ رَجُلَ صِدْقٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَسْتَشْرِفَ الْعَيْنَ وَالْأُذُنَ وَأَنْ لَا نُضَحِّيَ بِعَوْرَاءَ وَلا مُقَابَلَةٍ وَلا مُدَابَرَةٍ وَلا شَرْقَاءَ وَلا خَرْقَاءَ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي إِسْحَاقَ أَذَكَرَ عَضْبَاءَ؟ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ مَاالْمُقَابَلَةُ قَالَ يُقْطَعُ طَرَفُ الْأُذُنِ قُلْتُ مَا الْمُدَابَرَةُ؟ قَالَ يُقْطَعُ مُؤَخَّرُ الْأُذُنِ قُلْتُ مَا الشَّرْقَاءُ؟ قَالَ تُشَقُّ الْأُذُنُ قُلْتُ مَا الْخَرْقَاءُ؟ قَالَ تَخْرِقُ أُذُنَهَا السِّمَةُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If I were to appoint anyone of my ummah to a position of authority without consultation, I would have appointed Ibn Umm ʿAbd (Abdullah bin Masʿood).ʿ  

أحمد:٨٥٢حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُؤَمِّرًا أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي عَنْ غَيْرِ مَشُورَةٍ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمَّرْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ  

ahmad:853Abū Saʿīd a freed slave of Banī Hāshim And Muʿāwyah b. ʿAmr > Zāʾidah > ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib from his father > ʿAlī

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave Fatimah a trousseau of a velvet garment, a waterskin and a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibres -Muʿawiyah said: idhkhir.  

أحمد:٨٥٣حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَمُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو قَالا حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

جَهَّزَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاطِمَةَ فِي خَمِيلٍ وَقِرْبَةٍ وَوِسَادَةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ حَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِذْخِرٌ  

ahmad:854Aswad b. ʿĀmir > Isrāʾīl > Abū Isḥāq > Hāniʾ b. Hāniʾ

ʿAli ؓ said: al-Hasan most resembles the Messenger of Allah ﷺ between the navel and the head, and al-Husain most resembles him in what is lower than that.  

أحمد:٨٥٤حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ قَالَ قَالَ

عَلِيٌّ الْحَسَنُ أَشْبَهُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا بَيْنَ الصَّدْرِ إِلَى الرَّأْسِ وَالْحُسَيْنُ أَشْبَهُ مَا أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ  

ahmad:855ʿAbdullāh > Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar > Manṣūr b. Ḥayyān > Abū al-Ṭufayl > Qulnā Liʿalī

We said to ʿAli: Tell us of something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told you in secret. He said: He did not tell me anything in secret that he concealed from the people, but I heard him say: ʿMay Allah curse the one who slaughters in the name of something other than Allah, may Allah curse the one who gives refuge to an offender, may Allah curse the one who curses his parents and may Allah curse the one who changes the boundary markers.”  

أحمد:٨٥٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرُ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ قُلْنَا لِعَلِيٍّ

أَخْبِرْنَا بِشَيْءٍ أَسَرَّهُ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا أَسَرَّ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا كَتَمَهُ النَّاسَ وَلَكِنْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ لَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ ذَبَحَ لِغَيْرِ اللهِ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا وَلَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ لَعَنَ وَالِدَيْهِ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ غَيَّرَ تُخُومَ الْأَرْضِ يَعْنِي الْمَنَارَ

I was a man who emitted a great deal of madhi, and if I emitted madhi I would do ghusl, I told al-Miqdad to ask the Prophet ﷺ about it. He smiled and said: ʿWudoo’ is due for that.”  

أحمد:٨٥٦حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً فَإِذَا أَمْذَيْتُ اغْتَسَلْتُ فَأَمَرْتُ الْمِقْدَادَ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَضَحِكَ وَقَالَ فِيهِ الْوُضُوءُ

I came to the Prophet ﷺ, along with Jaʿfar and Zaid. He said to Zaid: ʿYou are my mawla,ʿand Zaid hopped with joy. He said to Jaʿfar: ʿYou resemble me in appearance and attitude.” And he hopped with joy behind Zaid. And he said to me: ʿYou are of me and I am of you.” And I hopped behind Jaʿfar.  

أحمد:٨٥٧حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَامِرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنَا وَجَعْفَرٌ وَزَيْدٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِزَيْدٍ أَنْتَ مَوْلَايَ فَحَجَلَ قَالَ وَقَالَ لِجَعْفَرٍ أَنْتَ أَشْبَهْتَ خَلْقِي وَخُلُقِي قَالَ فَحَجَلَ وَرَاءَ زَيْدٍ قَالَ وَقَالَ لِي أَنْتَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْكَ قَالَ فَحَجَلْتُ وَرَاءَ جَعْفَرٍ

I heard ‘Amir bin Wathilah say: it was said to ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ . Tell Us of something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told you in secret. He said: The Messenger of Allah did not say anything to me in secret and conceal it from the people, but I heard him say: ʿMay Allah curse the one who reviles his parents, may Allah curse the one who changes the boundary markers, and may Allah curse the one who gives refuge to an offender.”

أَخْبِرْنَا بِشَيْءٍ أَسَرَّ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا أَسَرَّ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَيْئًا وَكَتَمَهُ النَّاسَ وَلَكِنْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ لَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ سَبَّ وَالِدَيْهِ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ غَيَّرَ تُخُومَ الْأَرْضِ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ مَنْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا  

ahmad:859Aswad b. ʿĀmir > ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Abū Jaʿfar / al-Farrāʾ > Isrāʾīl > Abū Isḥāq > Zayd b. Yuthayʿ > ʿAlī

It was said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who should be appointed in charge after you are gone? He said: “If you appoint Abu Bakr, you will find him trustworthy and uninterested in worldly gains, seeking the Hereafter. If you appoint ‘Umar, you will find him strong and trustworthy and not fearing the blame of anyone for the sake of Allah. If you appoint Ali Which I do not think you will do you will find him a guide and guided, he will take you on the straight path.”  

أحمد:٨٥٩حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ يَعْنِي الْفَرَّاءَ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ يُثَيْعٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَنْ نُؤَمِّرُ بَعْدَكَ؟ قَالَ إِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ أَمِينًا زَاهِدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا رَاغِبًا فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عُمَرَ تَجِدُوهُ قَوِيًّا أَمِينًا لَا يَخَافُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ وَإِنْ تُؤَمِّرُوا عَلِيًّا وَلَا أُرَاكُمْ فَاعِلِينَ تَجِدُوهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا يَأْخُذُ بِكُمُ الطَّرِيقَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ  

ahmad:860Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > Shuʿbah > Abū al-Tayyāḥ > a man from > Azah > a man from Banī Asad

ʿAli ؓ came out to us and said: The Prophet ﷺ has enjoined Witr, and this is the time to pray Witr. O Ibnun-Nabbah, give the call to prayer.  

أحمد:٨٦٠حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْ عَنَزَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ

إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَمَرَ بِالْوَتْرِ ثَبَتَ وِتْرُهُ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ يَا ابْنَ النَّبَّاحِ أَذِّنْ أَوْ ثَوِّبْ

ʿAli ؓ came out to us when the muʿadhdhin gave the call to Fajr prayer and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has enjoined us to pray Witr and this is the time for it. Then he said: Give the iqamah for prayer, O Ibnun-Nawwahah.  

أحمد:٨٦١حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ عَنَزَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ قَالَ

خَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ حِينَ ثَوَّبَ الْمُثَوِّبُ لِصَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺأَمَرَنَا نُوِتْرُ فَثَبَتَ لَهُ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَقِمْ يَا ابْنَ النَّوَّاحَةِ
