ahmad:842Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > ʿĀṣim b. Ḍamrah > ʿAlī > Lays al-Watr Biḥatm Kālṣṣalāh And Lakinnah Sunnah Falā Tadaʿūh

Witr is not a must like (obligatory) prayer, but it is Sunnah, so do not omit it. Shuʿbah said: I found it written with me: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Witr.  

أحمد:٨٤٢حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ ضَمْرَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

لَيْسَ الْوَتْرُ بِحَتْمٍ كَالصَّلَاةِ وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ فَلَا تَدَعُوهُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَوَجَدْتُهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِنْدِي وَقَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ
