٤٨۔ حَدِيثُ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى

ahmad-zuhd:1419ʿAbdullāh from my father > Sayyār > Jaʿfar > Mālik b. Dīnār Yasʾal Hishām b. Ziyād al-ʿAdawī > Hadhā al-Ḥadīth Faḥaddathanā Bih Yawmaʾidh

[Machine] A man from Sham prepared for Hajj and went to sleep. Someone came to him in his dream and said to him, "Go to Iraq, then go to Basra, then go to the Banu Adi and bring Alaa bin Ziyad to me, for he is a man who speaks eloquently" So give him glad tidings of paradise. He said, "A dream is of no significance." He slept again and someone came to him and said, "Why haven't you gone to Iraq and then to Basra?" He mentioned the same thing until the third night when someone came to him with a bunch of grapes and said to him, "Why haven't you gone to Iraq and then to Basra, then to the Banu Adi and meet Alaa bin Ziyad, a man who speaks eloquently?" He said, "Alright, I will go." So he prepared his provisions and set out. When he left his house, he saw the person who came to him in his dream walking in front of him, guiding him along the way. When they arrived in Basra, he went to the Banu Adi and entered the house of Alaa bin Ziyad. A man stood at the door of Alaa bin Ziyad and said, "Peace be upon you, are you Alaa bin Ziyad?" He said, "No." The man said, "Enter, may Allah have mercy on you, and put down your belongings here." He said, "No, where is Alaa bin Ziyad?" He said, "He is in the mosque." Alaa used to sit in the mosque supplicating and talking. So the man approached Alaa, and Alaa smiled and his front tooth became apparent. He said, "By Allah, this is my friend." Alaa said to him, "Why didn't you put down the man's belongings when he entered?" He said, "I told him to, but he refused." Alaa said, "Put them down, may Allah have mercy on you." He said, "Be kind to me." Alaa entered his house and said to Asma (his wife), "Go to the other house." She went and the man entered and gave him glad tidings of the dream, then he left and mounted his ride. Hisham said, "Alaa stood up and closed his door and cried for three or seven days. He would not taste food or drink, nor open his door." Hisham said, "I was afraid that he would die. So I went to Al-Hasan (Al-Basri) and mentioned that to him. I said, "I only see him eating and drinking while crying." Al-Hasan came and struck him and said, "Open the door, my brother." When the man heard the words of Al-Hasan, he stood up and opened the door. Something harmful blazed and Allah knew it. Al-Hasan spoke to him and then said, "May Allah have mercy on you and you are from the people of Paradise, if Allah wills. Will you fight yourself?" Hisham said, "Alaa informed me and Al-Hasan about the dream. He said, "Do not inform anyone about it as long as I am alive."

ahmad-zuhd:1421ʿAbdullāh > Hārūn > Sayyār > ʿUbaydullāh b. Shumayṭ from my father

[Machine] I heard my father say, "How strange is the son of Adam! While his heart is focused on the hereafter, he scratches an itch caused by a small thorn and forgets about the hereafter."

[Machine] Woe to you, O 'Ataa, did I not inform you that you carry your knowledge to the doors of kings and the people of the world? O 'Ataa, someone comes and closes his door on you, revealing his poverty to you and concealing his wealth. And someone comes and opens his door to you, revealing his wealth to you and saying, "Call upon Me, I will respond to you." And woe to you, O 'Ataa, be content with a piece of the world without wisdom, and do not be content with wisdom without the world. Woe to you, O 'Ataa, if what is sufficient for you does not suffice you, then nothing in the world will suffice you. And woe to you, O 'Ataa, your belly is a sea of oceans and a valley of valleys, nothing fills it except dust.

[Machine] There was a man who used to show off in his work, so he would roll up his sleeves and raise his voice when he would recite. He would not come to anyone except he would insult and curse them. Then Allah blessed him with something after that, so he lowered his voice and made his prayer between himself and his Lord. He would not come to anyone after that except he would pray for good upon them and speak kindly to them.

She said: 'When the time was due, he woke up in a startled state and said: 'Indeed, someone has come to me.' So, he held onto the front part of his head and said: 'Oh Ibn Ziyad, stand up and remember Allah, for He will remember you.' [Machine] Rejoice, for that is knowledge of goodness. Have you not seen the thieves passing by the ruined house without paying attention to it, but when they pass by the house where they see belongings, they deviate until they take something from it? And he said, "It bothers me that my house is close to the mosque," meaning that he prefers his dwelling to be far away due to the abundance of mistakes. And I was informed by Al-Mubarak ibn Fadalah, from Humaid ibn Hilal, who said: I entered with Al-Hasan to Al-Ala ibn Ziyad Al-Adawi while he was sorrowful, and he had a sister who narrated stories to him morning and evening. So Al-Hasan said to him, "How are you, O Al-Ala?" He replied, "My sadness has intensified." So Al-Hasan said, "Get up, for by Allah, the end of independency from sorrow has come."

[Machine] He bore the burden on himself, and people began speaking to him about their needs, and he did not see success in fulfilling his own needs. He spent his night in prayer in the mosque and fell asleep in his prayer. When he fell asleep, a man came to him in his dream and said, "O Safwan, wake up and seek your need from His presence." Safwan asked, "Should I do that?" He got up, performed ablution with water, prayed, and supplicated. Ibnu Ziyad was alerted about Safwan's need, and the guards and police arrived with torches. The prison doors were opened until my cousin Safwan was brought out, and he was brought to Ibnu Ziyad. Ibnu Ziyad said to him, "Are you my cousin Safwan?" He replied, "Yes." Ibnu Ziyad sent him away. Safwan didn't realize what was happening until he knocked on the door and asked, "Who is it?" The person replied, "It's me, so-and-so. I alerted the prince in the middle of the night." The guards and police came, and the prison doors were opened. Safwan entered into the vacancy, meaning after bail was posted.

[Machine] I arrived in Bahrain and stayed with a woman who had sons, wealth, and a servant. She was in great sadness, but when we wanted to leave, I greeted her and asked if she had any needs. She said our need is for you to stay with us if you visit this city. I hesitated for a moment, then I approached her again. I arrived at the railway station and saw no one. I arrived at her door and also saw no one. I asked permission to enter and heard her laughter. I entered and found a woman with her. She said, "I see that you disapprove of what you see." I said, "Yes, indeed, I saw your door and it seemed like a sign." She said, "When you left us, we made it a rule not to focus on anything related to the sea, as it would drown, or anything related to the land, as it would be damaged. And her sons died, and her servant died." I asked, "Sorrow at that time and joy today?" She replied, "At that time, I felt that there was no good for me with my Lord. But when my wealth and children were taken from me, I hoped." A Muslim said, "I met Abdullah bin Umar and told him the story. He replied, "What happened to the Prophet Ayoub (Job), ﷺ , was more severe than this. This is just a trial. My clothes tore like this, and I sent them to be mended, but they did not return as I would have liked, and that saddened me."
