Rukhsah (excuse) for praying Jumuah when Eid falls on a Friday

abudawud:1070Muḥammad b. Kathīr > Isrāʾīl > ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah > Iyās b. Abū Ramlah al-Shāmī

I witnessed Muawiyah b. Abu Sufyan asking Zayd b. Arqam: Did you offer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the Friday and Eid prayers happening on the same day? He said: Yes. He asked: How did he do it? He replied: He offered the Eid prayer and granted a concession ˹to the people˺ to offer the Friday prayer, and said: "If anyone wants to pray it, he may pray."

abudawud:1071Muḥammad b. Ṭarīf al-Bajalī > Asbāṭ > al-Aʿmash > ʿAṭāʾ b. Abū Rabāḥ

Ata' ibn AbuRabah said: Ibn az-Zubayr led us in the 'Id prayer on Friday early in the morning. When we went to offer the Friday, he did not come out to us. So we prayed ourselves alone. At that time Ibn Abbas was present in at-Ta'if. When he came to us, we mentioned this (incident) to him. He said: He followed the sunnah.

abudawud:1072Yaḥyá b. Khalaf > Abū ʿĀṣim > Ibn Jurayj > ʿAṭāʾ

Friday and Eid al-Fitr fell on the same day during the lifetime of Ibn al-Zubayr. He said: The Eids have coincided on the same day. He combined them and prayed ˹only˺ two rakahs (i.e. he only prayed the Eid prayer) in the morning and did not add anything to them (i.e. did not pray Jumuah) until he offered the Asr prayer.

Eid prayer is sufficient as the Jumuah prayer and the Prophet ﷺ said that we shall still offer the Jumuah prayer

abudawud:1073Muḥammad b. al-Muṣaffá And ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ al-Waṣṣābī al-Maʿná > Baqiyyah > Shuʿbah > al-Mughīrah al-Ḍabbī > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: Two Eids have synchronized on this day. If anyone does not want to offer the Friday prayer, the Eid prayer is sufficient for him. ˹As for us,˺ we shall offer the Friday prayer.

This tradition has been narrated by Umar from Shubah.
