"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with thirteen rak'ahs, but when he grew older and weaker he prayed witr with nine." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1727)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً فَلَمَّا كِبَرَ وَضَعُفَ أَوْتَرَ بِتِسْعٍ»
" Ibn Shihab informed me, saying: 'Ata bin Yazid narrated to me from Abu Ayyub: That the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Witr is a duty, and whoever wants to pray witr with seven (rak'ahs), let him do so; whoever wants to pray witr with five, let him do so, whoever wants to pray witr with three, let him do so; and whoever wants to pray witr with one, let him do so.'"

"Ata' bin Yazid narrated to me that he heard Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari say: 'Witr is a duty, so whoever wants to pray witr with five rak'ahs let him do so, whoever wants to pray witr with three, let him do so; and whoever wants to pray witr with one, let him do so.'"
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ يَقُولُ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسِ رَكَعَاتٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلاَثٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ
The Prophet ﷺ said: The witr is a duty for every Muslim so if anyone wishes to observe it with five rak'ahs, he may do so; if anyone wishes to observe it with three, he may do so, and if anyone wishes to observe it with one, he may do so.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلاَثٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "Witr (an odd number of units of prayer) is a right (obligatory). So whoever wishes to perform Witr with five (units of prayer), let them do so. And whoever wishes to perform Witr with three (units), let them do so. And whoever wishes to perform Witr with one (unit), let them do so. And whoever finds it difficult, let them gesture with their head."
عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِهَا وَمَنْ شَقَّ عَلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً» *
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "Witr prayer is an obligation. Whoever wishes to perform it with five [units], let them do so. Whoever wishes to perform it with three [units], let them do so. Whoever wishes to perform it with one [unit], let them do so. And whoever finds it difficult, let them make a gesture [to indicate their intention]."
عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ «الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِهَا وَمَنْ غَلَبَهُ ذَلِكَ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً»
[Machine] The Prophet said, "Witr (Odd) prayer is a duty, so whoever likes to pray with five units, let them do so, and whoever likes to pray with three units, let them do so, and whoever likes to pray with one unit, let them do so."
قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ»

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ وَبِسَبْعٍ لاَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهَا بِسَلاَمٍ وَلاَ بِكَلاَمٍ
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with seven or five (rak'ahs), not separating between them with the taslim."
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ أَوْ بِخَمْسٍ وَلاَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِتَسْلِيمٍ
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Witr with seven or five Rak’ah, and he would not say Salam or speak in between them.”
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ أَوْ بِخَمْسٍ لاَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِتَسْلِيمٍ وَلاَ كَلاَمٍ
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with five and seven rak'ahs which he did not separate with any taslim nor talk." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1714)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ وَبِخَمْسٍ لَا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِسَلَامٍ وَلَا بِكَلَامٍ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to perform the Sunnah (optional) prayer of Witr with either five or seven units, without speaking or making a final salutation between them.
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ أَوْ سَبْعٍ لَا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِكَلَامٍ وَلَا تَسْلِيمٍ
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ used to perform voluntary prayers after Isha prayer, consisting of either seven or five units, without speaking or giving salutations between them."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ أَوْ خَمْسٍ لَا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِكَلَامٍ وَلَا تَسْلِيمٍ
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Witr with seven or five Rak’ah, and he would not say Salam or speak in between them.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1192)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ وَخَمْسٍ لَا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِتَسْلِيمٍ وَلَا بِكَلَامٍ»
"Witr is seven and no less than five." I mentioned that to Ibrahim and he said: "From whom did he quote that?" I said: "I do not know." Al-Hakam said: "Then I performed Hajj and I met Miqsam and said to him: 'From whom (did you narrate that)?' He said: 'From the trustworthy one, from Aishah and from Maimunah.'"
الْوَتْرُ سَبْعٌ فَلاَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ خَمْسٍ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لإِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ قُلْتُ لاَ أَدْرِي قَالَ الْحَكَمُ فَحَجَجْتُ فَلَقِيتُ مِقْسَمًا فَقُلْتُ لَهُ عَمَّنْ قَالَ عَنِ الثِّقَةِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَعَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ
The Prophet ﷺ used to pray witr with five and he did not sit except in the last (rak'ah) of them.
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ وَلاَ يَجْلِسُ إِلاَّ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ

"When Sa'd bin Hisham bin Amir came to visit us, he told us that he came to Ibn Abbas and asked him about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: 'Shall I not tell you of the most knowledgeable person on Earth about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said: 'Who?' He said: 'Aishah.' So we went to her and greeted her with Salam and entered and asked her. I said: 'Tell me about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'We used to prepare for him his siwak and water for wudu, then Allah (SWT) would wake him when He willed to wake him at night. He would clean his teeth and perform wudu, then he would pray nine rak'ahs, during which he would not sit until the eighth. Then he would praise Allah (SWT) and remember Him and supplicate, then he would get up and not say the taslim. Then he would pray the ninth, then sit and praise Allah (SWT) and remember Him and supplicate, then he would say a taslim that we could hear. Then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting, and that was eleven rak'ahs, O my son. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew older and put on weight, he prayed witr with seven, then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting after saying the taslim, and that was nine, O my son. And when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered a prayer, he liked to persist in offering it.'"
عَنْ وَتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَلاَ أَدُلُّكَ أَوْ أَلاَ أُنَبِّئُكَ بِأَعْلَمِ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ بِوَتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ مَنْ قَالَ عَائِشَةُ فَأَتَيْنَاهَا فَسَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهَا وَدَخَلْنَا فَسَأَلْنَاهَا فَقُلْتُ أَنْبِئِينِي عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نُعِدُّ لَهُ سِوَاكَهُ وَطَهُورَهُ فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللَّهُ ﷻ مَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيَتَسَوَّكُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي تِسْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَلاَ يَقْعُدُ فِيهِنَّ إِلاَّ فِي الثَّامِنَةِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ وَيَذْكُرُهُ وَيَدْعُو ثُمَّ يَنْهَضُ وَلاَ يُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي التَّاسِعَةَ فَيَجْلِسُ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ وَيَذْكُرُهُ وَيَدْعُو ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمًا يُسْمِعُنَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَتِلْكَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يَا بُنَىَّ فَلَمَّا أَسَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَخَذَ اللَّحْمَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ مَا يُسَلِّمُ فَتِلْكَ تِسْعًا أَىْ بُنَىَّ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى صَلاَةً أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُدَاوِمَ عَلَيْهَا
“I asked ‘Aishah: ‘O Mother of the Believers! Tell me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ She said: ‘We used to keep his tooth stick and water for ablution ready for him. Allah would wake him as He willed to during the night, and he would use the tooth stick and perform ablution, then he would pray nine Rak’ah, during which he would not sit until the eighth Rak’ah. Then he would call upon his Lord and remember Allah and praise Him and supplicate to Him. Then he would get up without saying the Salam. Then he would stand up and pray the ninth Rak’ah. Then he would sit and remember Allah and praise Him, and supplicate to his Lord and send blessing upon His Prophet. Then he would say Salam that we could hear. Then he would pray two Rak’ah after the Salam, while he was sitting down. That was eleven Rak’ah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew older and had gained weight, he would pray Witr with seven Rak’ah and then pray two more Rak’ah after he had said the Salam.’”
سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ قُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَفْتِنِي عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نُعِدُّ لَهُ سِوَاكَهُ وَطَهُورَهُ فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللَّهُ فِيمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيَتَسَوَّكُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي تِسْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ لاَ يَجْلِسُ فِيهَا إِلاَّ عِنْدَ الثَّامِنَةِ فَيَدْعُو رَبَّهُ فَيَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَيَحْمَدُهُ وَيَدْعُوهُ ثُمَّ يَنْهَضُ وَلاَ يُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي التَّاسِعَةَ ثُمَّ يَقْعُدُ فَيَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَيَحْمَدُهُ وَيَدْعُو رَبَّهُ وَيُصَلِّي عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمًا يُسْمِعُنَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ مَا يُسَلِّمُ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ فَتِلْكَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً فَلَمَّا أَسَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَخَذَ اللَّحْمُ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ مَا سَلَّمَ
[Machine] Narrated from Witr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We used to prepare his purification and toothbrush for him, then Allah would send him to what He wanted to send him in the night. So, he would cleanse himself and perform ablution and then pray nine rak'ahs, in which he would not sit except during the eighth one, where he would praise his Lord and supplicate to Him and remember Him. Then he would rise without giving salaam and perform the ninth rak'ah, in which he would sit and praise his Lord, supplicate, and remember Him. Then he would give salaam audibly for us to hear. After that, he would perform two rak'ahs while sitting, after giving salaam in a state of sitting. Those are the eleven rak'ahs, O my son."
عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنَا نُعِدُّ لَهُ طَهُورَهُ وَسِوَاكَهُ فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللهُ لِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ «فَيَتَسَوَّكُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي تِسْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ فِيهِنَّ إِلَّا عِنْدَ الثَّامِنَةِ فَيَحْمَدُ رَبَّهُ وَيَدْعُو وَيَذْكُرُهُ ثُمَّ يَنْهَضُ وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ وَيُصَلِّي التَّاسِعَةَ فَيَجْلِسُ فَيَذْكُرُ رَبَّهُ وَيَحْمَدُهُ وَيَدْعُو ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمًا يُسْمِعُنَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ بَعْدَمَا يُسَلِّمُ فَتِلْكَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يَا بُنَيَّ»
"When Sa'd bin Hisham bin Amir came to visit us, he told us that he came to Ibn Abbas and asked him about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: 'Shall I not tell you of the most knowledgeable person on Earth about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said: 'Who?' He said: 'Aishah.' So we went to her and greeted her with Salam and entered and asked her. I said: 'Tell me about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'We used to prepare for him his siwak and water for wudu, then Allah (SWT) would wake him when He willed to wake him at night. He would clean his teeth and perform wudu, then he would pray nine rak'ahs, during which he would not sit until the eighth. Then he would praise Allah (SWT) and remember Him and supplicate, then he would get up and not say the taslim. Then he would pray the ninth, then sit and praise Allah (SWT) and remember Him and supplicate, then he would say a taslim that we could hear. Then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting, and that was eleven rak'ahs, O my son. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew older and put on weight, he prayed witr with seven, then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting after saying the taslim, and that was nine, O my son. And when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered a prayer, he liked to persist in offering it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1721)

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with nine rak'ahs, then he would pray two rak'ahs sitting down. When he grew weaker he prayed witr with seven rak'ahs, then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting down."
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهَا تَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَلَمَّا ضَعُفَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe the witr prayer with nine rak'ahs. Then he used to pray seven rak'ahs (of witr prayer). He would pray two rak'ahs sitting after the witr in which he would recite the Qur'an (sitting). When he wished to bow, he stood up and bowed and prostrated. Abu Dawud said: These two traditions have been transmitted by Khalid b. 'Abd Allah al-Wasiti. In his version he said: 'Alqamah b. Waqqas said: O mother, how did he pray the two rak'ahs ? He narrated the rest of the tradition to the same effect.
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ وَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with nine rak'ahs, then he would pray two rak'ahs sitting down. When he grew weaker he prayed witr with seven rak'ahs, then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting down." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1722)

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهَا تَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ «يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَلَمَّا ضَعُفَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ»
That he came to the Mother of the Believers Aishah and asked her about the prayers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: "He used to pray eight rak'ahs at night and pray witr with the ninth, then he would pray two rak'ahs sitting down."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ يَعْنِي مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُصَيْنُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ أَنَّهُ وَفَدَ عَلَى أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَائِشَةَ فَسَأَلَهَا عَنْ صَلاَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَمَانَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَيُوتِرُ بِالتَّاسِعَةِ وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ مُخْتَصَرٌ
Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in Witr: "Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High;" and "Say: O you disbelievers!;' and 'Say: He is Allah, (the) One.'"
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِ { سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى } وَ { قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ } وَ { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } خَالَفَهُمَا حُصَيْنٌ فَرَوَاهُ عَنْ ذَرٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ
His father said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in witr: Glorify the Name of Your Lord, the Most High;' and "Say: O you disbelievers!'; and 'Say: He is Allah, (the) One." And after he had said the salam, he would say: Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) three times, raising his voice with it."
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِ { سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى } وَ { قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ } وَ { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } وَيَقُولُ بَعْدَ مَا يُسَلِّمُ سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ يَرْفَعُ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ خَالَفَهُمَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ فَرَوَاهُ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ عَنْ ذَرٍّ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ
