The healing power of Surat al-Fatihah as a ruqyah

bukhari:2276Abū al-Nuʿmān > Abū ʿAwānah > Abū Bishr > Abū al-Mutawakkil > Abū Saʿīd

Some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ went on a journey till they reached some of the 'Arab tribes (at night). They asked the latter to treat them as their guests but they refused. The chief of that tribe was then bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion) and they tried their best to cure him but in vain. Some of them said (to the others), "Nothing has benefited him, will you go to the people who resided here at night, it may be that some of them might possess something (as treatment)," They went to the group of the companions (of the Prophet ﷺ ) and said, "Our chief has been bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion) and we have tried everything but he has not benefited. Have you got anything (useful)?" One of them replied, "Yes, by Allah! I can recite a Ruqya, but as you have refused to accept us as your guests, I will not recite the Ruqya for you unless you fix for us some wages for it." They agrees to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them then went and recited (Surat-ul-Fatiha): 'All the praises are for the Lord of the Worlds' and puffed over the chief who became all right as if he was released from a chain, and got up and started walking, showing no signs of sickness. They paid them what they agreed to pay. Some of them (i.e. the companions) then suggested to divide their earnings among themselves, but the one who performed the recitation said, "Do not divide them till we go to the Prophet ﷺ and narrate the whole story to him, and wait for his order." So, they went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and narrated the story. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "How did you come to know that Suratul- Fatiha was recited as Ruqya?" Then he added, "You have done the right thing. Divide (what you have earned) and assign a share for me as well." The Prophet ﷺ smiled thereupon.

"Some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across a tribe of Bedouins that did not entertain them, nor behave hospitality with them. Their leader became ill, and they came to us saying: 'Do you have any medicine?'We said: ' Yes. But you did not entertain us nor have us as guests so we will not do anything until you give us something.' Then they gave sheep for that." He said: 'So a man from us began reciting the Opening of the Book (Surat Al-Fatihah) and he was cured. So when we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we mentioned to him, He said: 'How did you know it was Ruqyah?' And he did not mention any prohibition against it,and he said: 'Eat , and assign me a share among you from them (Sheep).'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on a mission, and while we were on our way, we reached a village. Its people refused to offer us anything to eat. Then a man from the village came to us and said, "Are there any skilled archers among you, O Arabs?" Abu Sa'id replied, "What is it you want?" The man said, "The ruler of the village is dying." Abu Sa'id then left with him, and I followed him, reciting Surah Al-Fatiha repeatedly. The ruler was cured, and he sent us food and cattle. Abu Sa'id's companions said, "The Prophet ﷺ has never refused anything to us. We should not take anything from this until we ask the Prophet ﷺ about it." So we sacrificed the animals until we reached the Prophet ﷺ , and informed him about the incident. He said, "Eat and feed us from it, how do you know that it is a Rukyah?" I said, "I recite it with the intention of seeking Allah's protection and blessings for you."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent thirty men and we arrived at a people at night, but they refused to host us. So we camped nearby, and their leader was bitten. They came to us and asked if any of us could recite Ruqyah. We said yes, and they told us to go, but we refused unless they provided something for us. So they gave us thirty sheep, and I went with them. I started reciting Surah Al-Fatiha and wiped the place where he was bitten until he was healed. They gave us the sheep, but I said, "By Allah, I will not eat it. I don't know what Ruqyah is, nor do I know how to perform it correctly." When we arrived in Medina, we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what happened. He said, "How did you know that it was a Ruqyah, and what made you think it was a Ruqyah? Yes, eat it and give me some of it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent thirty men and we arrived at a tribe at night, but they refused to host us. So we camped on the outskirts and their leader was bitten. They came to us and asked if any of us could perform Ruqyah (healing recitation). We said yes, so they told us to proceed, but we asked them to give us sheep as compensation for hosting us. They gave us thirty sheep, and I went with them and started reciting the opening chapter of the Quran (Al-Fatiha) and wiped the place where their leader was bitten until he was healed. They gave us the sheep and I said: "By Allah, I will not eat it. I do not know what Ruqyah is nor do I possess the skill of performing Ruqyah." When we returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , we informed him about what had happened. He said: "How do you know that it is a Ruqyah? What made you think of it as a Ruqyah? Eat it and present it to me as well." He then took an arrow and said, "Hisham contradicted it," and he narrated it from Abu Bishr, who narrated it from Abu al-Muwakkil and said that Abu Sa'id also narrated it.
