[Machine] "Perform the prayer." Mansour was asked what that means. He said, "To be able to fully concentrate in his prayer when he bows down and prostrates."
«قَارُّوا الصَّلَاةَ» فَسُئِلَ مَنْصُورٌ مَا يَعْنِي بِذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَ «لِيَتَمَكَّنَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ إِذَا رَكَعِ وَإِذَا سَجَدَ»
[Machine] Abdullah says, "Be calm and feel at ease in prayer."
عَبْدُ اللهِ «قَارُّوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ» يَقُولُ اسْكُنُوا اطْمَئِنُّوا
[Machine] "God continues to look favorably upon His servant with His face as long as he does not turn away or speak."
«لَا يَزَالُ اللهُ مُقْبِلًا عَلَى الْعَبْدِ بِوَجْهِهِ مَا لَمْ يَلْتَفِتْ أَوْ يُحْدِثْ»
[Machine] As for this, it would be a mistake to choose either one, as being in-between them would be more preferable to me.
«أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ أَخْطَأَ السُّنَّةَ لَوْ رَاوَحَ بَيْنَهُمَا كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ»
[Machine] "Whoever catches a unit of prayer has caught the whole prayer."
«مَنْ أَدْرَكَ الرَّكْعَةَ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ»
[Machine] "Whoever catches the rak'ah (prayer unit), has indeed caught it."
«مِنْ أَدْرَكَ الرَّكْعَةَ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ»
[Machine] He informed him about Ali and Ibn Mas'ud, who said, "Whoever does not catch up with the Rak'ah, should not count it as a Sajdah."
أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَا «مَنْ لَمْ يُدْرِكِ الرَّكْعَةَ فَلَا يَعْتَدُّ بِالسَّجْدَةِ»
[Machine] "Whoever misses the bowing should not proceed with the prostration."
«مَنْ فَاتَهُ الرُّكُوعُ فَلَا يَعْتَدُّ بِالسُّجُودِ»
[Machine] I and Abdullah entered the mosque and the people were in a state of bowing, so we bowed as well. Then, we walked until we entered the people's group, and they raised their heads, and we raised ours with them. When we finished the prayer, I stood up to complete my duties, and Abdullah told me, "You have completed the prayer."
دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعَبْدُ اللهِ الْمَسْجِدَ وَالْقَوْمُ رُكُوعٌ فَرَكَعْنَا ثُمَّ مَشَيْنَا حَتَّى دَخَلْنَا فِي الْقَوْمِ فَرَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا مَعَهُمْ فَلَمَّا أَنْ فَرَغْنَا مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ قُمْتُ لِأَقْضِيَ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقَالَ «قَدْ أَتْمَمْتَ الصَّلَاةَ»
[Machine] I entered the mosque with Ibn Mas'ood and the Imam was in the state of ruku' (bowing during prayer). We also performed ruku' and then we proceeded until we reached the row (for prayer). When the Imam finished, I stood up to complete my prayer and he said, "You have caught up with it (the prayer)."
دَخَلْتُ أنا وَابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْمَسْجِدَ وَالْإِمَامُ رَاكِعٌ فَرَكَعْنَا ثُمَّ مَضَيْنَا حَتَّى اسْتَوَيْنَا بِالصَّفِّ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ الْإِمَامُ قُمْتُ أَقْضِي فَقَالَ «قَدْ أَدْرَكْتَهُ»
وَقَالَ «إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَدْرَكْتَ»
أَنْ تَرْكَعَ دُونَ الصَّفِّ»
[Machine] "If anyone of you bows down and then walks to his place before they lift their heads, then he is committing an act of disrespect. And if they lift their heads before he reaches his place, then he should not commit an act of disrespect."
«إِذَا رَكَعَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَمَشَى إِلَى الصَّفِّ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُ يَعْتَدُّ بِهَا وَإِنْ رَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَصِلَ إِلَى الصَّفِّ فَلَا يَعْتَدُّ بِهَا»
«قَدْ أَدْرَكْتُمْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ»
[Machine] Abdullah entered the mosque, and someone entered with him. The Imam started to make the bowing motion, so we also started to bow before we reached the row. Then we reached the row when the Imam said, "May Allah hear the one who praises Him." When the Imam finished, the companion of Abdullah stood up to leave. Abdullah grabbed his garment and said, "Sit down as you have caught the prayer."
دَخَلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ الْمَسْجِدَ وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ فَرَكَعَ الْإِمَامُ فَرَكَعْنَا قَبْلَ أَنِ انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الصَّفِّ ثُمَّ انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الصَّفِّ حِينَ قَالَ الْإِمَامُ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ الْإِمَامُ قَامَ صَاحِبُ عَبْدِ اللهِ لِيَقْضِيَ فَأَخَذَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بِثَوْبِهِ فَقَالَ «اجْلِسْ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكْتَ الصَّلَاةَ»
[Machine] "Is not what I have strived for most deserving of prayer?"
«أَوَلَيْسَ أَحَقُّ مَا سَعَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ؟»
[Machine] "If a man is unsure about his prayer and cannot determine whether he prayed three or two units, then he should base it on the more reliable option, and then he should perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness."
«إِذَا شَكَّ الرَّجُلُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ أَثْلَاثًا صَلَّى أَمِ اثْنَتَيْنِ؟ فَلْيَبْنِ عَلَى أَوْثَقِ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ يَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ»
[Machine] He said, "He seeks to ensure that and prostrates two prostrations of forgetfulness."
أَنَّهُ قَالَ «يَتَحَرَّى أَصَوْبَ ذَلِكَ وَيَسْجُدُ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ»
[Machine] Abdullah used to say during forgetfulness he would seek correctness and perform two prostrations while seated after the taslim.
أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي السَّهْوِ يَتَحَرَّى الصَّوَابَ وَيَسْجُدُ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ
[Machine] "Neglect occurs when one stands in a position where one should be sitting, or sits in a position where one should be standing, or offers salutations during the two units of prayer. In that case, one should complete their prayer and then perform two prostrations while sitting and reciting the tashahhud."
«السَّهْوُ إِذَا قَامَ فِيمَا يُجْلَسُ فِيهِ أَوْ قَعَدَ فِيمَا يُقَامُ فِيهِ أَوْ سَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يَفْرُغُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَيَسْجُدُ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ يَتَشَهَّدُ فِيهِمَا»
[Machine] "When you stand, sit, or greet, then prostrate with two prostrations of forgetfulness, then recite the tashahhud, then greet with salaam."
«إِذَا قُمْتَ أَوْ جَلَسْتَ أَوْ سَلَّمْتَ فَاسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ ثُمَّ تَشَهَّدْ ثُمَّ سَلِّمْ»
[Machine] "I marveled at these two men. As for the first man who drags his garment (in pride), Allah does not look at him. And as for the second man, Allah does not accept his prayer."
«عَجِبْتُ لِهَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ أَمَّا الْمُسْبِلُ إِزَارَهُ فَلَا يَنْظُرُ اللهُ إِلَيْهِ وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ صَلَاتَهُ»
[Machine] "Yes, as for this, Allah does not look at it, meaning the one who trails his garment. And as for this, Allah does not accept it from him, meaning the one who does not complete his bowing and prostration."
«أَجَلْ أَمَّا هَذَا فَلَا يَنْظُرُ اللهُ إِلَيْهِ يَعْنِي الْمُسْبِلَ إِزَارَهُ وَأَمَّا هَذَا فَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ مِنْهُ يَعْنِي الَّذِي لَا يُتِمُّ رُكُوعَهُ وَلَا سُجُودَهُ »
[Machine] He saw an Arab man praying with his garment hem flowing, so he said, "The one who extends his garment hem while praying is not from Allah, in neither a permissible nor forbidden manner."
أَنَّهُ رَأَى أَعْرَابِيًّا يُصَلِّي قَدْ أَسْبَلَ إِزَارَهُ فَقَالَ «الْمُسْبِلُ إِزَارَهُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَيْسَ مِنَ اللهِ ﷻ فِي حِلٍّ وَلَا حَرَامٍ»
[Machine] "He makes what is attained with the Imam the last of his prayers."
«يَجْعَلُ مَا يُدْرِكُ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ آخِرَ صَلَاتِهِ»
[Machine] Everyone has done well and we will do as Masrooq did.
كُلٌّ قَدْ أَحْسَنَ وَنَفْعَلُ كَمَا فَعَلَ مَسْرُوقٌ
[Machine] Both of them are good and I do as he has done in the two units of prayer.
«كِلَاهُمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَإِنِّي أَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ هَذَا الَّذِي قَرَأَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ»
[Machine] Jundub and Masruq missed one unit of prayer (rak'ah) during the Maghrib prayer. After the imam finished, they stood up to make it up. Jundub stood up for the second unit (rak'ah), while Masruq remained seated with them. They asked Ibn Mas'ud, who said, "Both of you have done well, and I will do as Masruq did."
أَنَّ جُنْدُبًا وَمَسْرُوقًا أَدْرَكَا مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ رَكْعَةً فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ الْإِمَامُ قَامَا يَقْضِيَانِ فَقَامَ جُنْدُبٌ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ وَقَعَدَ مَسْرُوقٌ فِيهِمَا جَمِيعًا فَقَالَا لِابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ «كِلَاكُمَا قَدْ أَحْسَنَ وَأَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ مَسْرُوقٌ»
[Machine] Junaid and Masrouq prayed in the Maghrib mosque and only caught one unit of prayer with the imam. They both stood to make up for it, with Masrouq sitting during the second unit and Junaid standing for the first unit of the makeup. So, they went to Abdullah and told him about it. He said, "Both of you have done well, so do as Masrouq did."
صَلَّى جُنْدُبٌ وَمَسْرُوقٌ فِي مَسْجِدٍ الْمَغْرِبَ وَلَمْ يُدْرِكَا مَعَ الْإِمَامِ إِلَّا رَكْعَةً فَقَامَا يَقْضِيَانِ فَقَعَدَ مَسْرُوقٌ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ وَقَامَ جُنْدُبٌ فِي أَوَّلِ رَكْعَةٍ مِنَ الْقَضَاءِ فَأَتَيَا عَبْدَ اللهِ فَذَكَرَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «كِلَاكُمَا قَدْ أَحْسَنَ وَافْعَلُوا كَمَا فَعَلَ مَسْرُوقٌ»
[Machine] Masrooq and Jundab went to the imam and both of them had already performed one unit of prayer. Masrooq did not recite while Jundab recited. They mentioned this to Abdullah who said, "Both of you have not deviated from the correct action and statement. Masrooq did nothing wrong."
أَنَّ مَسْرُوقًا وَجُنْدَبًا انْتَهَيَا إِلَى الْإِمَامِ وَقَدْ سُبِقَا بِرَكْعَةٍ فَلَمْ يَقْرَأْ مَسْرُوقٌ وَقَرَأَ جُنْدُبٌ فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ فَقَالَ كِلَاكُمَا لَمْ يَأْلُ عَنِ الْأَمْرِ وَالْقَوْلُ مَا صَنَعَ مَسْرُوقٌ
[Machine] "Indeed, prayer has a specific time, just like the time of Hajj."
«إِنَّ» لِلصَّلَاةِ وَقْتًا كَوَقْتِ الْحَجِّ
[Machine] "Arrange your rows properly, as surely Satan passes through them like the passing of specks or the flowing of blood."
«سَوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَتَخَلَّلُهَا كَالْخَذْفِ أَوْ كَأَوْلَادِ الْخَذْفِ »
[Machine] "He does not kneel before the imam, nor does he rise before him, nor does he prostrate before him, nor does he rise before him."
«لَا يُرْكَعُ قَبْلَ الْإِمَامِ وَلَا يُرْفَعُ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا يُسْجَدُ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا يُرْفَعُ قَبْلَهُ»
[Machine] "The imam has been made in order to be followed, so when he bows, all of you should bow, and when he raises, all of you should raise. Do not rush ahead of him neither when he bows nor when he raises nor when he prostrates. If you are to catch up with what happened before you, it is only for you to catch up with what he did before you: for indeed, he prostrates before you and raises before you, so that you catch up with that."
«إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا وَلَا تَسْبِقُوهُ إِذَا رَكَعَ وَلَا إِذَا رَفَعَ وَلَا إِذَا سَجَدَ فَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ إِنَّمَا بِكُمْ أَنْ تُدْرِكُوا مَا سَبَقَكُمْ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْجُدُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتُدْرِكُوا ذَلِكَ»
[Machine] We perform the pilgrimage to the House of our Lord and fulfill the debt, and it is like the falling of pebbles. So Abdullah said, "We have not heard of this in the religion of the Hereafter. This is nothing but an invention." So Abdullah left.
نَحُجُّ بَيْتَ رَبِّنَا وَنَقْضِي الدَّيْنَ وَهُوَ مِثْلَ الْقَطَوَاتِ يَهْوِينَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ «مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا فِي الْمِلَّةِ الْآخِرَةِ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا اخْتِلَاقٌ» فَانْصَرَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ
[Machine] He turned towards the north and then prayed with them.
عَنْ شِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمَا
[Machine] Abdullah prayed with Alqamah and Al-Aswad, then he stood with one on his right and the other on his left, then he stood between them.
«أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ صَلَّى بِعَلْقَمَةَ وَالْأَسْوَدِ فَقَامَ هَذَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَهَذَا عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثُمَّ قَامَ بَيْنَهُمَا»
[Machine] Ibn Mas'ood prayed with him and Al-Aswad, then stood between them.
«أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ صَلَّى بِهِ وَبِالْأَسْوَدِ فَقَامَ بَيْنَهُمَا»
[Machine] Abdullah said, "If they are three, then they should all go together, and if they are more than that, then one of them should go ahead."
عَبْدُ اللهِ «إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً فَلَيَصُفُّوا جَمِيعًا وَإِذَا كَانُوا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَلْيَتَقَدَّمْهُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ»
[Machine] Ibn Mas'ood came and the imam was praying the morning prayer, so he prayed two extra units of prayer to a pillar, but he did not pray the two units of the dawn prayer.
«جَاءَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَالْإِمَامُ يُصَلِّي الصُّبْحَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِلَى سَارِيَةٍ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيِ الْفَجْرِ»
[Machine] The prayer was established, so Abdullah went forward to the mosque and performed two units of prayer, then entered the mosque.
«أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَتَقَدَّمَ عَبْدُ اللهِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ»
[Machine] Ibn Mas'ood used to say, "Carry your needs with what is written (i.e., follow the teachings and obligations of Islam)."
أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ «احْمِلُوا حَوَائِجَكُمْ عَلَى الْمَكْتُوبَةِ»
[Machine] I heard Abdullah reciting in one of my daytime prayers.
«سَمِعْتُ قِرَاءَةَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فِي إِحْدَى صَلَاتَيِ النَّهَارِ»
[Machine] I prayed next to Abdullah and I didn't know that he was reading anything until I heard him say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge". So, I knew that he was in the chapter of Taha.
صَلَّيْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَمَا عَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ يَقْرَأُ شَيْئًا حَتَّى سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ {رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا} فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ فِي طَهَ
[Machine] One of you sitting on the sides is better for him than sitting in prayer cross-legged
«لَأَنْ يَقْعُدَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى رَضْفَتَيْنِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَقْعُدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مُتَرَبِّعًا»
[Machine] "Because for a man to sit on two cushions is better for him than to sit cross-legged during prayer." Abdul Razzaq said, "If he prays standing, then he should not sit in a cross-legged position during the tashahhud (a part of the prayer) and if he prays sitting, then he should sit cross-legged."
«لَأَنْ يَجْلِسَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى رَضِيفَتَيْنِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مُتَرَبِّعًا» قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ يَقُولُ «إِذَا كَانَ صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَلَا يَجْلِسْ يَتَشَهَّدُ مُتَرَبِّعًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا فَلْيَتَرَبَّعْ»
[Machine] "He said regarding the sick person, 'If he is unable to stand on the ground, he should make a gesture of bowing and make his prostration lower than his bowing.'"
أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْمَرِيضِ إِذَا صَلَّى «إِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً وَلْيَجْعَلْ سُجُودَهُ أَخْفَضُ مِنْ رُكُوعِهِ»
[Machine] Nod your head and let your bow be higher than your prostration.
«أَوْمِئْ إِيمَاءً وَلْيَكُنْ رَكْعَتُكَ أَرْفَعَ مِنْ سَجْدَتِكَ»
[Machine] Alqamah and Al-Aswad entered upon Abdullah and said, "Indeed, the mother of Al-Aswad has been ordered to sit, and surely she is being controlled by the stick of the spinning top (a form of divination). She offers prayers on it, so what do you see?" He (Abdullah) said, "Indeed, I see the Shaytan using the stick to make it prostrate on the ground, if he is capable of doing so. If not, he makes it gesture."
دَخَلَ عَلْقَمَةُ وَالْأَسْوَدُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ فَقَالَا إِنَّ أُمَّ الْأَسْوَدِ أُقْعِدَتْ وَإِنَّهُ يَرْكُزُ لَهَا عُودَ الْمِرْوَحَةِ تُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ فَمَا تَرَى؟ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَأَرَى الشَّيْطَانَ يَعْرِضُ بِالْعُودِ لِتَسْجُدْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ إِنِ اسْتَطَاعَتْ وَإِلَّا تُومِئْ إِيمَاءً»
[Machine] I asked Alqamah, "How was the recitation of Abdullah?" He said, "The people of the house would often hear his voice."
قُلْتُ لِعَلْقَمَةَ كَيْفَ كَانَتْ قِرَاءَةُ عَبْدِ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «كَانَ يَسْمَعُ صَوْتَهُ أَهْلُ الدَّارِ»
