I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "If the son of Adam (the human being) had two valleys of money, he would wish for a third, for nothing can fill the belly of Adam's son except dust, and Allah forgives him who repents to Him."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَوْ كَانَ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If the son of Adam had money equal to a valley, then he will wish for another similar to it, for nothing can satisfy the eye of Adam's son except dust. And Allah forgives him who repents to Him."

Ibn ʿAbbas said: I do not know whether this saying was quoted from the Qur'an or not. ʿAta' said, "I heard Ibn al-Zubayr saying this narration while he was on the pulpit."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ مِثْلَ وَادٍ مَالاً لأَحَبَّ أَنَّ لَهُ إِلَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ وَلاَ يَمْلأُ عَيْنَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ۔»

قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَلاَ أَدْرِي مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هُوَ أَمْ لاَ قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ

I heard Ibn Az-Zubair who was on the pulpit at Mecca, delivering a sermon, saying, "O men! The Prophet used to say, "If the son of Adam were given a valley full of gold, he would love to have a second one; and if he were given the second one, he would love to have a third, for nothing fills the belly of Adam's son except dust. And Allah forgives he who repents to Him." Ubai said, "We considered this as a saying from the Qur'an till the Sura (beginning with) 'The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you..' (102.1) was revealed."

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِمَكَّةَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ يَقُولُ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ ابْنَ آدَمَ أُعْطِيَ وَادِيًا مَلأً مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ أُعْطِيَ ثَانِيًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَسُدُّ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Adam's son had a valley full of gold, he would like to have two valleys, for nothing fills his mouth except dust. And Allah forgives him who repents to Him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ وَلَنْ يَمْلأَ فَاهُ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ».

If the son of Adam were to possess two valleys of riches. he would long for the third one. And the stomach of the son of Adam is not filled but with dust. And Allah returns to him who repents.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ كَانَ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

If there were for the son of Adam a valley full of riches, he would long to possess another one like it. and Ibn Adam does not feel satiated but with dust. And Allah returns to him who returns (to Him). Ibn Abbas said: I do not know whether it is from the Qur'an or not; and in the narration transmitted by Zuhair it was said: I do not know whether it is from the Qur'an, and he made no mention of Ibn Abbas.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ مِلْءَ وَادٍ مَالاً لأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ مِثْلُهُ وَلاَ يَمْلأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَاللَّهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَلاَ أَدْرِي أَمِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هُوَ أَمْ لاَ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ زُهَيْرٍ قَالَ فَلاَ أَدْرِي أَمِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Indeed, Allah ordered me to recite to you, so he recited in it: "Those who disbelieve from amongst the People of the Book were not going to...'" (And he) also recited in it, "Indeed, the religion with Allah is Al-Hanafiyyah, the Muslim, not Judaism, nor Christianity, whoever does good, it shall not be rejected from him." And he recited to him: "And if the son of Adam had a valley-full of wealth, he would seek a second, and if he had a second, he would seek a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except for dirt. And Allah pardons those who repent."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ ( لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ ) فَقَرَأَ فِيهَا إِنَّ ذَاتَ الدِّينِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ الْمُسْلِمَةُ لاَ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ وَلاَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ ثَانِيًا لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Indeed Allah has ordered me to recite the Qur'an to you." So he recited to him: "Those who disbelieved were not going to... (98:1) and he recited in it: "Indeed the religion with Allah is that which is Hanafiyyah, Muslim, not Judaism, nor Christianity, nor Zoroastrian, whoever does good then it shall not be rejected from him." And he recited to him: "If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth he would seek a second, and if he had a second he would seek a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dirt. And Allah pardons those who repent."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ ( لمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ) وَفِيهَا إِنَّ ذَاتَ الدِّينِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ الْمُسْلِمَةُ لاَ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ وَلاَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةُ وَلاَ الْمَجُوسِيَّةُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ ثَانِيًا لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

“If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would love to have a third along with them. Nothing could satisfy him except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of the one who repents.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَهُمَا ثَالِثٌ وَلاَ يَمْلأُ نَفْسَهُ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] I hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I do not know whether something is being revealed to him or he is saying something; and he says, "If the son of Adam had a valley full of wealth, he would seek to have a second one, and nothing can fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

أَسْمَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْ شَيْءٌ يَقُولُهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] I heard the Prophet of Allahﷺ saying, "If the son of Adam had a valley full of money, they would love to have another similar to it, and nothing fills the son of Adam's soul except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent." Ibn Abbas said, "I do not know if this is from the Quran or not."

سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مَالًا لَأَحَبَّ أَنَّ لَهُ إِلَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَاللهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَمِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هُوَ أَمْ لَا؟

[AI] I used to hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "I do not know if something has been revealed to me or if I am speaking on my own accord." If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would desire a third one, and nothing would fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.

أَسْمَعُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْ شَيْءٌ يَقُولُهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ؟ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى لَهُمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

“If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would love to have a third along with them. Nothing could satisfy him except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of the one who repents.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4235)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادٍ آخَرُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ فَاهُ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ – and I do not know whether something was Revealed down upon him or he used to say, "If the son of Adam owned two valleys, he would certainly wish for" or "certaintly want a third valley. And nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except the dirt ˹of the grave˺, yet Allah turns to whoever repents."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ – فَلَا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ أُنْزِلَ أَوْ كَانَ يَقُولُهُ –: «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى» أَوْ «لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا۔ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ، وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ۔»

[AI] "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to say, "If the son of Adam had two valleys full of wealth, he would wish for a third valley. And nothing would fill the son of Adam's belly except dust." Al-Affan said, "Then Allah will accept the repentance of those who repent."

أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ إِذًا لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ قَالَ عَفَّانُ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْتَابَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every son of Adam is a sinner, and the best of sinners are those who repent. If the son of Adam had two valleys full of wealth, he would still seek a third. Nothing can fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلُّ ابْنِ آدَمَ خَطَّاءٌ فَخَيْرُ الْخَطَّائِينَ التَّوَّابُونَ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى لَهُمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Adam's son had a valley full of gold, he would like to have two valleys, for nothing fills his mouth except dust. And Allah forgives him who repents to Him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6439)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ وَلَنْ يَمْلَأَ فَاهُ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَاللهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] I heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ saying, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would desire a third valley, and nothing can fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust (i.e. death), and Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say something but I do not know if it was revealed or if he said it himself. If the son of Adam had a valley full of wealth, he would still desire a second valley, and nothing would fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ أُنْزِلَ أَمْ كَانَ يَقُولُهُ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَقَالَ حَجَّاجٌ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth, he would desire two valleys, and if he had two valleys, he would desire a third. Nothing can fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust (of the grave)."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى وَادِيَيْنِ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لَهُ وَادِيَيْنِ لَتَمَنَّى ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If the son of Adam had a valley full of gold, he would desire another one. And if he had two valleys full of gold, he would wish for a third one. The stomach of the son of Adam will only be filled with dust (i.e., when he dies)."

أَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ تَمَنَّى آخَرَ ؟ فَقَالَ جَابِرٌ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ مِنْ نَخْلٍ تَمَنَّى مِثْلَهُ ثُمَّ تَمَنَّى مِثْلَهُ حَتَّى يَتَمَنَّى أَوْدِيَةً وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ

[AI] We used to read in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that if the son of Adam had two valleys of gold and silver, he would desire a third, and nothing would fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.

لَقَدْ كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَفِضَّةٍ لَابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِمَا آخَرَ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ بَطْنَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, Allah has commanded me to recite the Qur'an to you." He said: "So he recited, 'Those who disbelieved from the People of the Scripture' [Al-Bayyinah, 1]." He said: "So he recited, 'Even if the son of Adam had a valley full of wealth, he would ask for another and even if he was given another, he would ask for a third. Nothing fills the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. And Allah forgives those who repent.' And indeed, this religion is upright with Allah - the Hanif faith, which is not associated with polytheism, nor Judaism, nor Christianity. And whoever does good, it will never be negated for him."

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ قَالَ فَقَرَأَ {لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ} [البينة 1] قَالَ فَقَرَأَ فِيهَا وَلَوْ أَنَّ ابْنَ آدَمَ سَأَلَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ فَأُعْطِيَهُ لَسَأَلَ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ سَأَلَ ثَانِيًا فَأُعْطِيَهُ لَسَأَلَ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ وَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ الدِّينَ الْقَيِّمَ عِنْدَ اللهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ غَيْرُ الْمُشْرِكَةِ وَلَا الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَلَا النَّصْرَانِيَّةِ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ

[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah has commanded me to recite upon you." He (the Prophet) said, "So recite upon me." He (the reciter) recited upon me, 'Those who disbelieved from the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence - a Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures within which are upright writings. Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence. And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.' Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account. Shu'bah said, then he recited after that and he recited, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would long for a third, and nothing would satisfy the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. Then he sealed it with the remaining portion of the passage."

لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيَّ {لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ مُنْفَكِّينَ حَتَّى تَأْتِيَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَةُ رَسُولٌ مِنَ اللهِ يَتْلُو صُحُفًا مُطَهَّرَةً فِيهَا كُتُبٌ قَيِّمَةٌ وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَةُ} [البينة 2] إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِنْدَ اللهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ غَيْرُ الْمُشْرِكَةِ وَلَا الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَلَا النَّصْرَانِيَّةِ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ آيَاتٍ بَعْدَهَا ثُمَّ قَرَأَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَسَأَلَ وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ قَالَ ثُمَّ خَتَمَهَا بِمَا بَقِيَ مِنْهَا

We came to the Prophet ﷺ when Divine Revelation came down to him, then he spoke to us and told us that day, "Allah said: Verily, We have sent down wealth for the performance of prayer and offering charity. If the son of Adam owned a valley, he would like to have a second. And if he had two valleys, he would like to add a third. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam but the dirt ˹of the grave˺, yet Allah turns to whoever repents."

كُنَّا نَأْتِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ إِذَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا فَقَالَ لَنَا ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ: «إِنَّ اللهَ قَالَ: (إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا الْمَالَ لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَلَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ ثَانٍ وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثٌ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ۔)»

[AI] I asked Aisha, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything when he entered the house?" She replied, "When he entered the house, he would assume as if he had two valleys filled with wealth, he would seek a third valley, and his stomach would never be filled except with dirt. And we have only made wealth for the establishment of prayer and the giving of zakat. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ شَيْئًا إِذَا دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ تَمَثَّلَ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ فَمَهُ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا الْمَالَ إِلَّا لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] "To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran to you.' So he recited, 'Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists' [Al-Bayyinah, 1]. And from his description is that if the son of Adam asked for a valley full of wealth, then he would ask for a second, and if he were given a second, he would ask for a third, and nothing would fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. And Allah forgives those who repent. Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And whoever does righteousness will not be denied [his due reward].'"

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ» فَقَرَأَ {لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ} [البينة 1] وَمِنْ نَعْتِهَا لَوْ أَنَّ ابْنَ آدَمَ سَأَلَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ فَأَعْطَيْتُهُ سَأَلَ ثَانِيًا وَإِنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ ثَانِيًا سَأَلَ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ وَإِنَّ الدِّينَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ غَيْرَ الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَلَا النَّصْرَانِيَّةِ وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth, he would desire to have another similar to it. However, nothing can fill the soul of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ مِلْءَ وَادِي مَالٍ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ مِثْلُهُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَاللَّهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مِنْ تَابَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would desire a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except the dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ نَخْلٍ لَابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If the son of Adam had a valley full of dates, he would wish for another similar to it, and nothing would fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ مِنْ نَخْلٍ لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ»

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "If the son of Adam had a valley filled with wealth, he would desire to have another one similar to it. But nothing fills the son of Adam's soul except dust, and Allah forgives those who repent."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مَالًا لَأُحِبَّ أَنَّ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

If there were two valleys of gold for the son of Adam, he would long for another one. and his mouth will not be filled but with dust, and Allah returns to him who repents. (Using translation from Muslim 1048c)

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادٍ آخَرُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ فَاهَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَاللَّهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

If the son of Adam were to possess two valleys of riches. he would long for the third one. And the stomach of the son of Adam is not filled but with dust. And Allah returns to him who repents. (Using translation from Muslim 1048a)

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِ وَادِيًا ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ أَنَّ لَهُ ثَانِيًا لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَهَذَا الْكَلَامُ لَا نَعْلَمُهُ يُرْوَى عَنِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ إِلَّا مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ

أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا ولاَ يملأ نفس بن آدَمَ إلاَّ التُّرَابُ

قَال سَمعتُ النَّبِيّ ﷺ يَقْرَأُ فِي الصَّلاةِ لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ لابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ أُعْطَى ثَانِيًا لابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا ولاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ إلاَّ عَبد الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ عَن أَبِي الْعَلاءِ وَهَذَا مِمَّا كَانَ يُقْرَأُ فَنُسِخَ

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادِيًا آخَرَ ولاَ يَمْلَأُ فَاهُ إلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ كَانَ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ مِنْ مَالٍ لابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَانِيًا ولاَ يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابن آدم إلاَّ التراب ويتوب على من تاب

قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيّ ﷺ فَلا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ أُنْزِلَ أَمْ كَانَ يَقُولُهُ لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَاديًا مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى أَوْ لابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَانِيًا ولاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إلاَّ التُّرَابُ ويتوب الله على من تاب

قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيّ ﷺ قَالَ فَلا أَدْرِي أَشَيْءٌ نَزَلَ أَمْ كَانَ يَقُولُهُ؟ لَوْ كَانَ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى أَوْ لابْتَغَى ثَانِيًا ولاَ يملأ جوف ابن آدم إلاَّ التراب

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قال لو كان لابن آدم واديين مِنْ مَالٍ لابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالثًا ولاَ يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] We used to come to the Prophet, ﷺ , when the revelation came to him, and he would talk to us. One day he said to us, "If the son of Adam had a valley, he would love to have a second, and if he had two valleys, he would love to have a third. The only thing that fills the son of Adam's belly is dust, and Allah turns to whoever repents."

كُنَّا نَأْتِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ إِذْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْيُ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا فَقَالَ لَنَا ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ ثَانٍ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لَهُ وَادِيَيْنِ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ الثَّالِثُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to come to us when revelation came to him, and he would teach us what was revealed to him. So, one day I came to him and he said, "Verily, Allah the Exalted says, 'We have sent down wealth to establish prayer and give Zakah. If the son of Adam had a valley, he would love to have another like it. And if he had two valleys, he would love to have a third, and nothing fills the son of Adam except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent.' "

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ أَتَيْنَاهُ يُعَلِّمُنَا مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ فَجِئْتُهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا الْمَالَ لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ الثَّانِي وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ اثْنَانِ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِمَا الثَّالِثُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] We used to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and whenever something happened to him, he would inform us about it. One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us that a verse was revealed to him that says: "Indeed, We have sent down wealth to establish prayer and give zakah. If it had been for the son of Adam to have a valley full of gold, he would still seek another valley. And nothing will fill the stomach of the son of Adam except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents." Rabee'ah ibn 'Uthman, Hisham ibn Saad, and Ibn Muhabbar differed in the chain of narration of this hadith.

كُنَّا نَكُونُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ أَخْبَرَنَا بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيَّ آيَةٌ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا الْمَالَ لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَلَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ ابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ كَانَ ثَانِيًا لَابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ «» وَخَالَفَ رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ هِشَامَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ وَابْنَ مُحَبَّرٍ فِي إِسْنَادِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah ﷻ said: 'We have revealed wealth for the establishment of prayer and the giving of zakat. If the son of Adam had a valley, he would desire to have another. And if he had two valleys, he would desire to have a third. Nothing can fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust. And Allah turns to whoever repents."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ قَالَ اللهُ ﷻ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا الْمَالَ لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَلَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادٍ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثٌ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ

[AI] "We used to read during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'If the son of Adam had a valley of gold or silver, he would still wish for a third, and nothing would fill the son of Adam's stomach except dust. And Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent.'"

كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ لَتَمَنَّى الثَّالِثُ وَلَا يَمْلَأُ بَطْنَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] "From the Prophet ﷺ he said, 'If the son of Adam had two valleys, he would wish for a third valley, and the only purpose of wealth is to establish prayer and give zakat, and the son of Adam cannot be satisfied except with dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ لَتَمَنَّى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَمَا جُعِلَ الْمَالُ إِلَّا لِإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَلَا يُشْبِعُ ابْنَ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would seek a third, and nothing would fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust. Allah will accept the repentance of whoever repents to Him."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] I heard Ibn Zubayr on the pulpit of Mecca saying in his sermon, "O people, indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'If the son of Adam were given a valley full of gold, he would love to have a second valley, and if he were given the second valley, he would love to have a third valley. The stomach of the son of Adam will not be filled except with dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent.'"

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ مَكَّةَ يَقُولُ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «لَوْ أَنَّ ابْنَ آدَمَ أُعْطِيَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "If the son of Adam were to possess two valleys of wealth, he would still desire a third, and nothing can fill the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَوْ سُئِلَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَتَمَنَّى إِلَيْهِمَا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يُشْبِعُ ابْنَ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ»
