that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most merciful of my nation to my nation is Abu Bakr, and the most severe of them concerning the order of Allah is 'Umar, and the most truly modest of them is 'Uthman bin 'Affan. The most knowledgeable of them concerning the lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh Bin Jabal, the most knowledgeable of them concerning (the laws of) inheritance is Zaid bin Thabit, the best reciter (of the Qur'an) among them is Ubayy bin Ka'b, and every nation has a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this nation is Abu 'Ubaidah Bin Al-Jarrah."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْحَمُ أُمَّتِي بِأُمَّتِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأَشَدُّهُمْ فِي أَمْرِ اللَّهِ عُمَرُ وَأَصْدَقُهُمْ حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالْحَلاَلِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَأَفْرَضُهُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَأَقْرَؤُهُمْ أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَمِينٌ وَأَمِينُ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ قَتَادَةَ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ أَبُو قِلاَبَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ وَالْمَشْهُورُ حَدِيثُ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ  

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most merciful of my nation to my nation is Abu Bakr, and the most severe of them concerning the order of Allah is 'Umar, and the most truly modest of them is 'Uthman bin 'Affan. And every nation has a trustworthy guardian, and the trustworthy guardian of this Ummah is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Jarrah."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَرْحَمُ أُمَّتِي بِأُمَّتِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأَشَدُّهُمْ فِي دِينِ اللهِ عُمَرُ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَرَّةً فِي أَمْرِ اللهِ عُمَرُ وَأَصْدَقُهُمْ حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَأَفْرَضُهُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَأَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ أَلَا وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَمِينًا وَإِنَّ أَمِينَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The most merciful among my Ummah (nation) towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr, and the strongest of them in the matter of Allah is Umar, and the most modest among them is Uthman, and the most knowledgeable about the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b, and the most qualified to distinguish between lawful and unlawful matters is Mu'adh, except that every Ummah has a trustworthy person, and the trustworthy person of this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah." This is an authentic chain, according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not exclude it using this version. They only agreed on mentioning Abu Ubaidah in the chain, and I have mentioned its reason in the book of Al-Talkhis according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أرْحَمُ أُمَّتِي بِأُمَّتِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأَشَدُّهُمْ فِي أَمْرِ اللَّهِ عُمَرُ وَأَصْدَقُهُمْ حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَأَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَأَفْرَضُهُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذٌ إِلَّا أَنَّ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَمِينًا وَإِنَّ أَمِينَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُوعُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ» هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ بِهَذِهِ السِّيَاقَةِ وَإِنَّمَا اتَّفَقَا بِإِسْنَادِهِ هَذَا عَلَى ذِكْرِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَقَطْ وَقَدْ ذَكَرْتُ عِلَّتَهُ فِي كِتَابِ التَّلْخِيصِ على شرط البخاري ومسلم  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most compassionate of my nation towards it is Abu Bakr, and the strictest in following the command of Allah is Umar, and the most modest of them is Uthman, and the most knowledgeable of the recitation of the Quran is Ubay bin Ka'b, and the most comprehensive in understanding it is Zaid bin Thabit, and the most just in ruling is Ali bin Abi Talib, and the most knowledgeable in lawful and unlawful matters is Mu'adh bin Jabal, and the most truthful in speech is Abu Dhar, and the most reliable person in this nation is Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah, and the most knowledgeable scholar of this nation is Abdullah bin Abbas." Kauthar bin Hakim is unreliable.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ أَرْأَفَ أُمَّتِي بِهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَإِنَّ أَصْلَبَهَا فِي أَمْرِ اللَّهِ عُمَرَ وَإِنَّ أَشَدَّهَا حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَإِنَّ أَقْرَأَهَا أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ وَإِنَّ أَفْرَضَهَا زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَإِنَّ أَقْضَاهَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَإِنَّ أَعْلَمَهَا بِالْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَإِنَّ أَصْدَقَهَا لَهْجَةً أَبُو ذَرٍّ وَإِنَّ أَمِينَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَإِنَّ حَبْرَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ لِعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ» كوثر بن حكيم ساقط  

The Messenger of Allah said: The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the one who adheres most sternly to the religion of Allah is 'Umar; the most sincere of them in shyness and modesty is 'Uthman; the best judge is 'Ali bin Abu Talib; the best in reciting the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most knowledgeable of what is lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal; and the most knowledgeable of the rules of inheritance (Fara'id) is Zaid bin Thabit. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْحَمُ أُمَّتِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأَشَدُّهُمْ فِي دِينِ اللهِ عُمَرُ وَأَصْدَقُهُمْ حَيَاءً عُثْمَانُ وَأَفْرَضُهُمْ زَيْدٌ وَأَقْرَؤُهُمْ أُبَيٌّ وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ مُعَاذٌ وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَمِينًا وَأَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ وَكَذَلِكَ

"أرحم أُمتى بأُمَّتِى أبو بكرٍ، وأشدهم في أمرِ اللهِ عمرُ، وأصدقُهم حياءً عثمانُ، وأعلمُهم بالحلالِ والحرام معاد بن جبلٍ، وأفرضُهم زيدُ بن ثابتِ، وأقْرَؤُهم لكتابِ اللهِ أبي بن كعبٍ، ولكلِ أمةٍ أمين، وأمين هذه الأمةِ أبو عبيدةَ بن الجراحِ ".  

"أرحمُ هذه الأمةِ بها: أبو بكرٍ، وأقْواهُم في دينِ اللهِ عُمَر، وأفْرضُهُم زيدُ بن ثابت، وأقضاهُم عليُّ بن أبي طالبِ، وأصدقهم حياءِ عثمانُ بن عفانَ، وأمينُ هذه الأمة أبو عُبيدةَ الجراح، وأقرؤهم لكتابِ اللهِ أبيُ بنْ كعبٍ وأبو هريرة وعاءُ (من) العلم، وسَلمانُ عالمُ لا يُدرَكُ، ومعاذُ بن جبل أعلَمُ النَّاسِ بحلالِ الله وحرامه، وما أظلَّت الخضراءُ، ولا أقلَّت الغبْراءُ منْ ذِي لهْجةٍ أصدقَ مِنْ أبي ذرٍ".  

"أرحَمُ أُمَّتى بأمتِى أبو بكرِ، وأرفقُ أُمَّتِي لأمَّتِى عمر، وأصدقُ أمَّتِى حياءً عثمان، وأَقضى أمَّتى عليُّ بن أبَي طالبٍ، وأعلَمُها بالحلالِ والحرامِ معاذُ بن جبلٍ، يجئُ يَوم القيامة أمامَ العلماءِ برتَوة وأقرأُ أُمَّتى أَبيُّ بن كعبٍ، وأَفرضُها زيدُ بن ثابتٍ، وقد أُتِى عُويمر عبادةً يعني: أبا الدّرداءٍ".  

"حَدَّثنَا مُحَمَّدُ بن ثَابِتٍ العَبْدِىُّ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ : أَرْحَمُ أُمَّتِى بِأُمَّتِى أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَأَشَدُّهُمْ، وَأَرْحَمُهُمْ فِى اللَّهِ -تَعَالَى- عُمَرُ،

وَأَشَدُّهُمْ حَيّاء عُثْمَانُ، وَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالحَلَالِ وَالحَرَامِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ، وَأَفْرَضُهُم زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ، وأقرأُهم أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ، وَكَانَ يُقَالُ: أَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالقَضَاءِ عَلِىٌّ".
