ذِكْرُ الْإِبَاحَةِ لِلْمَرْأَةِ فِي الْإِحْدَادِ أَنْ تَمَسَّ الطِّيبَ فِي بَعْضِ الْأَوْقَاتِ دُونَ بَعْضٍ

We were forbidden to mourn for more than three days for a dead person, except for a husband, for whom a wife should mourn for four months and ten days (while in the mourning period) we were not allowed to put kohl in our eyes, nor perfume our-selves, nor wear dyed clothes, except a garment of 'Asb (special clothes made in Yemen). But it was permissible for us that when one of us became clean from her menses and took a bath, she could use a piece of a certain kind of incense. And it was forbidden for us to follow funeral processions.  

أَنْ نُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلاَ نَكْتَحِلَ وَلاَ نَطَّيَّبَ وَلاَ نَلْبَسَ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلاَّ ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ وَقَدْ رُخِّصَ لَنَا عِنْدَ الطُّهْرِ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَتْ إِحْدَانَا مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا فِي نُبْذَةٍ مِنْ كُسْتِ أَظْفَارٍ وَكُنَّا نُنْهَى عَنِ اتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ  

The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is not lawful for a lady who believes in Allah and the Last Day, to mourn for more than three days for a dead person, except for her husband, in which case she should neither put kohl in her eyes, nor perfume herself, nor wear dyed clothes, except a garment of 'Asb"  

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لاَ يَحِلُّ لاِمْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا لاَ تَكْتَحِلُ وَلاَ تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلاَّ ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ  

I had in fact no need of it, but I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: It is not permissible for the women believing in Allah and the Hereafter to abstain from adornment beyond three days except (at the death of) husband (in which case she must abstain from adornment) for four months and ten days.  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ لاَ يَحِلُّ لاِمْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا  

A woman must not observe mourning for one who had died for more than three (days) except for four months and ten days in the case of her husband. And she must not wear a dyed garment except one of the types made of dyed yarn, or apply collyrium, or touch perfume except a little perfume or incense, when she has been purified after her courses.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ تُحِدُّ امْرَأَةٌ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلاَ تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلاَّ ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ وَلاَ تَكْتَحِلُ وَلاَ تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلاَّ إِذَا طَهُرَتْ نُبْذَةً مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ  

We were forbidden to observe mourning for the dead beyond three days except in the case of husband (where it is permissible) for four months and ten days, and (that during this period) we should neither use collyrium nor touch perfume, nor wear dyed clothes, but concession was given to a woman when one of us was purified of our courses to make use of a little incense or scent.  

أَنْ نُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلاَ نَكْتَحِلُ وَلاَ نَتَطَيَّبُ وَلاَ نَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا وَقَدْ رُخِّصَ لِلْمَرْأَةِ فِي طُهْرِهَا إِذَا اغْتَسَلَتْ إِحْدَانَا مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا فِي نُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ  

"It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days except for a husband; she should mourn for him for four months and ten (days)."  

أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ يَحِلُّ لاِمْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ تَحِدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تَحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا  

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'No woman should mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days, except for a husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days. She should not wear garments that are dyed or patterned, or put on kohl or comb her hair, and she should not put on any perfume except when purifying herself after her period, when she may use a little of Qust or Azfar.'"

"It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day, to mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days, except for a husband; she should not use kohl, dye nor wear dyed clothes."

‘Umm Athiyah reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying “A woman must not observe mourning for more than three (days) except for four months and ten days in the case of a husband and she must not wear a dyed garment except one of the types made of dyed yarn or apply collyrium or touch perfume except for a little costus or azfar when she has been purified after her menstrual courses. The narrator Ya’qub mentioned the words “except washed clothes” instead of the words “one of the types made of dyed yarn”. Ya’qub also added “She must not apply Henna”  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لاَ تُحِدُّ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثٍ إِلاَّ عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا لاَ تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلاَّ ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ وَلاَ تَكْتَحِلُ وَلاَ تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلاَّ أَدْنَى طُهْرَتِهَا إِذَا طَهُرَتْ مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا بِنُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ مَكَانَ عَصْبٍ إِلاَّ مَغْسُولاً وَزَادَ يَعْقُوبُ وَلاَ تَخْتَضِبُ  

'No deceased person should be mourned for more than three days, except a woman should mourn for her husband for four months and ten days, and she should not wear dyed clothes, except for a garment of 'Asb, and she should not wear kohl or perfume, except at the beginning of her purity, when she may apply a little Qust and Azfar.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يُحِدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍفَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا الْمَرْأَةُ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا لَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَطَّيَّبُ إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرَتِهَا نُبْذَةً مِنْ قُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ  

It is not permissible for a woman believing in Allah and the Hereafter to observe mourning on the dead for more than three (days), except in case of her husband. (Using translation from Muslim 1491)  

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ مَاتَ نَسِيبٌ لَهَا أَوْ قَرِيبٌ لَهَا فَدَعَتْ بِصُفْرَةٍ فَمَسَحَتْ بِهِ ذِرَاعَيْهَا وَقَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا  

"It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days except for a husband; she should mourn for him for four months and ten (days)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3503)   

عَنْ بَعْضِ أَزَاوِجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَوْ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تَحُدَّ عَلَى هَالِكٍ أَكْثَرِ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تَحُدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one is to mourn a deceased person for more than three days except for a woman, as she is to mourn for her husband for four months and ten days. She is not to wear dyed clothes except for clothes made of coarse wool. She is not to beautify herself or wear perfume except when she reaches the stage of minimal menstrual purity, she can beautify herself with fairness and nails."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا يُحَدُّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا الْمَرْأَةُ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصْبٍ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَطَيَّبُ إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَدْنَى طُهْرِهَا تَطَيَّبُ بِقُسْطٍ وَأَظْفَارٍ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A woman should not observe 'Iddah [waiting period] for more than three days except for her husband, for she observes 'Iddah for four months and ten days. She should not wear dyed garments unless they are washed, and she should not adorn herself, wear kohl, or touch perfume, except after being purified from her menstruation by taking a bath or removing dirt or nails."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تُحِدُّ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجِهَا فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبًا مَغْسُولًا وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَخْتَضِبُ وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا إِذَا طَهُرَتْ مِنْ حَيْضِهَا بَعْدَهُ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ»  

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'No woman should mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days, except for a husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days. النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا  

[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to fast for more than three days except with the permission of her husband. She should not beautify herself, comb her hair, or apply perfume except when she is in a state of purity. And she should not wear a dyed garment, except a garment made of 'asab fabric."

رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى أَنْ تُحِدَّ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تُحِدُّ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا تَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَلَا تَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا تَمَسُّ طِيبًا إِلَّا إِلَى أَدْنَى طُهْرَتِهَا إِذَا طَهُرَتْ بِنُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ  

We were forbidden to observe mourning for the dead beyond three days except in the case of husband (where it is permissible) for four months and ten days, and (that during this period) we should neither use collyrium nor touch perfume, nor wear dyed clothes, but concession was given to a woman when one of us was purified of our courses to make use of a little incense or scent. نُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَّا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا وَلَا نَكْتَحِلُ وَلَا نَتَطَيَّبُ وَلَا نَلْبَسُ ثَوْبًا مَصْبُوغًا إِلَّا ثَوْبَ عَصَبٍ وَقَدْ رَخَّصَ فِي طُهْرِهَا إِذَا اغْتَسَلَتْ إِحْدَانَا مِنْ مَحِيضِهَا فِي نُبْذَةٍ مِنْ قُسْطٍ أَوْ أَظْفَارٍ  

"لَا يَحِلُّ لامْرَأةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَاليَوْمِ الآخِرِ أَنْ تُحِدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثلاثِ ليالٍ، إلا على زَوْجٍ فَإِنَّهَا تحِدُّ عَليهِ أربَعةَ أَشْهرٍ وعَشرًا".

"لَا يَحِلُّ لامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ تُحِدُّ عَلَى ثَلاثٍ إلا عَلَى زَوْجٍ أرْبَعَةَ أشهرٍ وعشرًا، فَإِنَّها لا تَكْتَحل، ولا تلبسُ ثوبًا مصبوغًا إِلا ثوبَ عُصْب، ولا تمسُّ طيبًا إلا إذا طَهُرَتَ من مَحيضِهَا نُبْذةً من قُسْطةِ أَظْفَارٍ".
