The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There are three (persons) whose actions are not recorded: a sleeper till he awakes, an idiot till he is restored to reason, and a boy till he reaches puberty.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمُبْتَلَى حَتَّى يَبْرَأَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَكْبَرَ

Ibn Abbas said: A lunatic woman who had committed adultery was brought to Umar. He consulted the people and ordered that she should be stoned. Ali ibn AbuTalib passed by and said: What is the matter with this (woman)? They said: This is a lunatic woman belonging to a certain family. She has committed adultery. Umar has given orders that she should be stoned. He said: Take her back. He then came to him and said: Commander of the Faithful, do you not know that there are three people whose actions are not recorded: a lunatic till he is restored to reason, a sleeper till he awakes, and a boy till he reaches puberty? He said: Yes. He then asked: Why is it that this woman is being stoned? He said: There is nothing. He then said: Let her go. He (Umar) let her go and began to utter: Allah is most great.

أُتِيَ عُمَرُ بِمَجْنُونَةٍ قَدْ زَنَتْ فَاسْتَشَارَ فِيهَا أُنَاسًا فَأَمَرَ بِهَا عُمَرُ أَنْ تُرْجَمَ فَمُرَّ بِهَا عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ قَالُوا مَجْنُونَةُ بَنِي فُلاَنٍ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا عُمَرُ أَنْ تُرْجَمَ قَالَ فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا بِهَا ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْقَلَمَ قَدْ رُفِعَ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ عَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَبْرَأَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ هَذِهِ تُرْجَمُ قَالَ لاَ شَىْءَ قَالَ فَأَرْسِلْهَا قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَهَا قَالَ فَجَعَلَ يُكَبِّرُ

Ibn Abbas said: A lunatic woman passed by Ali ibn AbuTalib. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition to the same effect as Uthman mentioned. This version has: Do you not remember that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: There are three whose actions are not recorded: a lunatic whose mind is deranged till he is restored to consciousness, a sleeper till he awakes, and a boy till he reaches puberty?

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ عَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ الْمَغْلُوبِ عَلَى عَقْلِهِ حَتَّى يُفِيقَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ فَخَلَّى عَنْهَا سَبِيلَهَا

The Prophet ﷺ said: There are three (persons) whose actions are not recorded: a sleeper till he awakes, a boy till he reaches puberty, and a lunatic till he comes to reason. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij has transmitted it from Al-Qasim b. Yazid on the authority of 'Ali from the Prophet ﷺ. This version adds: "and an old man who is feeble-minded."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The pen has been lifted from three; for the sleeping person until he awakens, for the boy until he becomes a young man and for the mentally insane until he regains sanity."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَشِبَّ وَعَنِ الْمَعْتُوهِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ

"The pen has been lifted from three: From the sleeper until he wakes up, from the minor until he grows up, and from the insane until he comes back to his senses or recovers."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاَثٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّغِيرِ حَتَّى يَكْبُرَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ أَوْ يَفِيقَ

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿThe Pen has been lifted from three: from the child until he reaches puberty, from the sleeper until he wakes up and from the insane until he regains his sanity.”

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاثَةٍ عَنِ الصَّغِيرِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمُصَابِ حَتَّى يُكْشَفَ عَنْهُ

ʿThe Pen has been lifted from three; from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the crazy - or insane- one until he comes back to his senses, and from the minor until he grows up.”

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمَعْتُوهِ أَوْ قَالَ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ وَعَنِ الصَّغِيرِ حَتَّى يَشِبَّ

You do not have the right to do that. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “The Pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the child until he reaches adolescence, and from the insane person until he recovers, or comes to his senses.ʿ So ʿUmar ؓ pardoned her.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الطِّفْلِ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَبْرَأَ أَوْ يَعْقِلَ فَأَدْرَأَ عَنْهَا عُمَرُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿI have been given four thing that which was not given to any of the other Prophets.” I have been given the keys of the Earth, I have been named Ahmad, the dust has been made a means of purification for me and my ummah has been made the best of nations.ʿ

وَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أُتَرْجُمُ هَذِهِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَوَ مَا تَذْكُرُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ عَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ الْمَغْلُوبِ عَلَى عَقْلِهِ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ» ؟ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ فَخَلَّى عَنْهَا

[AI] "What is this?" they said. 'Umar ordered that it be translated. He returned it and went with it to 'Umar and said, "Do you not know that the pen is raised from a madman until he becomes reasonable, from a patient until he recovers, from a sleeper until he wakes up, and from a child until he reaches the age of discernment."

«مَا هَذِهِ؟» قَالُوا أَمَرَ بِهَا عُمَرُ أَنْ تُرْجَمَ قَالَ فَرَدَّهَا وَذَهَبَ مَعَهَا إِلَى عُمَرَ وَقَالَ «أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّ الْقَلَمَ رُفِعَ عَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ وَعَنِ الْمُبْتَلَى حَتَّى يُفِيقَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ»

[AI] Umar brought a madwoman who had committed adultery and he wanted to stone her. Ali said to him, "Do you not know that the pen has been lifted from three: the insane person until he regains his sanity, the child until he reaches the age of puberty, and the sleeper until he wakes up?" So, he left her. This hadith has been narrated with a sound chain of transmission from Ali, from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

أُتِيَ عُمَرُ بِامْرَأَةٍ مَجْنُونَةٍ حُبْلَى فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْجُمَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ أَوَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْقَلَمَ قَدْ رُفِعَ عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ عَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ «فَخَلَّى عَنْهَا» وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ بِإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُسْنَدًا صحيح فيه إرسال

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رفع القلم عن ثلاثة عن الصغير حتى يكبر وعن النائم حتى يستيقظ وعن المجنون حتى يفيق

[AI] Umar brought a woman who had committed adultery, and with her was her child. Ali passed by and let her go, saying, "This is a trial from the children of so-and-so." Then he said, "By Allah, I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the one who is insane until he comes to his senses, and from the child until he reaches puberty.'"

أُتِيَ عُمَرُ بِامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ زَنَتْ وَمَعَهَا وَلَدُهَا فَمَرَّ عَلِيٌّ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهَا وَقَالَ هَذِهِ مُبْتَلَاةُ بَنِي فُلَانٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ عَلُمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمُبْتَلَى حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ وَعَنِ الصَّغِيرِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ يُكْبُرَ»

ʿThe Pen has been lifted from three; from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the crazy - or insane- one until he comes back to his senses, and from the minor until he grows up.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 956)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ

[AI] Ali said to Umar, "Oh Commander of the Believers, have you ordered the stoning of so-and-so?" Umar replied, "Yes." Ali then said, "Don't you remember the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'The pen has been lifted from three: the sleeper until he wakes up, the child until he reaches puberty, and the insane until he regains sanity?'" Umar responded, "Yes." So he revoked the order.

عَلِيٌّ بِمَجْنُونَةِ بَنِي فُلَانٍ قَدْ زَنَتْ وَهِيَ تُرْجَمُ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِعُمَرَ ؓ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَرْتَ بِرَجْمِ فُلَانَةَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَمَا تَذْكُرُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يُفِيقَ ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَخَلَّى عَنْهَا

[AI] Ali encountered a woman from the tribe of Fulan who had committed adultery and was about to be stoned. Ali asked Umar, "O Commander of the Believers, did you order the stoning of this woman?" Umar replied, "Yes." Ali then reminded Umar of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, 'The pen is lifted from three: from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the child until he reaches puberty, and from the insane until he regains sanity.' Umar acknowledged this and revoked the order. This narration is transmitted by Ata bin Sa'ib from Abu Dhubiyan as a marfu' hadith.

مُرَّ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ بِمَجْنُونَةِ بَنِي فُلَانٍ قَدْ زَنَتْ وَهِيَ تُرْجَمُ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِعُمَرَ ؓ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَرْتَ بِرَجْمِ فُلَانَةٍ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَمَا تَذْكُرُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يُفِيقَ ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَخَلَّى عَنْهَا وَرَوَاهُ عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِي ظَبْيَانَ مُرْسَلًا مَرْفُوعًا

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "The pen has been lifted from three: from the child until he reaches puberty, from the sleeper until he wakes up, and from the insane until he regains sanity." He (the narrator) said: And Abu al-Rabi' narrated to us, Hushaym informed us, Khalid al-Hadda narrated from Abu al-Dhuhah from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), with the same narration.

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ عَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يُكْشَفَ عَنْهُ 17214 قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ ثنا هُشَيْمٌ أنبأ خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The pen is lifted from three: the sleeper until he wakes up, the insane until he regains sanity, and the child until he reaches puberty." And we have narrated in the past from Ali, from the Prophet ﷺ .

النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَفِيقَ وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ وَرَوَيْنَا فِيمَا مَضَى عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ؓ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

"رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عن ثلاثة: عن المجنونِ المغلوب عَلَى عقْلِهِ حتى يَبْرَأَ، وَعَن النَّائِم حَتَّى يَسْتَيقِظَ، وَعن الصَّبِىِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ".

"رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ: عَن النَّائِم حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ وعَن الصَّبىِّ حَتى يَشِبِّ، وعَن الْمَعْتُوهِ حَتى يعْقِلَ".

"رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عن ثَلَاثَةِ: عن النَّائِم حتى يَسْتَيقِظَ، وَالْمَعْتُوهِ حَتَّى يُفِيقَ، وَالصَّبىِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ".

"رُفِعَت الأَقْلامُ عن ثَلاثَة: عن الصغيرِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ, وَعن النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ، وعن الْمَجْنُونِ حَتَّى يَعْقِلَ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً مَجْنُونَةً أَصَابَتْ فَاحِشَةً فَأَمَرَ عُمَرُ بِرَجْمِهَا، فَقَالَ عَلِىٌّ: أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْقَلَم مَرْفُوعٌ عَن ثَلاثَةٍ: عَنِ النَّائِم حَتَّى يَسْتَيقِظَ، وَعَنِ الْمُبْتَلَى حَتَّى يَبْرَأَ، وعَنِ الصَّبِىِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، قَالَ: فَمَا بَالُ هَذِهِ؟ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهَا".
