8. Book of Food (1/2)
٨۔ كِتَابُ الْأَطْعِمَةِ ص ١
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) and eat from what is in front of you."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ «سَمِّ اللَّهَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ»
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was eating food with six of his Companions when a Bedouin came and ate it all in two bites. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘If he had said Bismillah, it would have sufficed you (all). When any one of you eats food, let him say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, let him say Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3264)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْكُلُ طَعَامًا فِي سِتَّةِ نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَأَكَلَهُ بِلُقْمَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَوْ ذَكَرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ لَكَفَاكُمْ فَإِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ نَسِيَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ
8.2 [Machine] Dua for the Host when Serving Food
٨۔٢ بَابُ الدُّعَاءِ لِصَاحِبِ الطَّعَامِ إِذَا أَطْعَمَ
[Machine] My father, for my mother, if you were to make food for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she made Thareed (a dish) and he said with his hand, "Let's start." My father then left and he called him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on top of it and then said, "Take in the name of Allah." So they took from its sides. When they tasted it, he prayed for them and said, "O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, and bless their sustenance."
أَبِي لِأُمِّي لَوْ صَنَعْتِ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ طَعَامًا فَصَنَعَتْ ثَرِيدَةً وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ يُقْلِلُ فَانْطَلَقَ أَبِي فَدَعَاهُ فَوَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدَهُ عَلَى ذِرْوَتِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «خُذُوا بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ» فَأَخَذُوا مِنْ نَوَاحِيهَا فَلَمَّا طَعِمُوا دَعَا لَهُمْ فَقَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ وَبَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي رِزْقِهِمْ»
8.3 [Machine] Prayer after finishing the meal
٨۔٣ بَابُ الدُّعَاءِ بَعْدَ الْفَرَاغِ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ
When the food cloth was removed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “praise be to Allah abundantly and sincerely, of such a nature as is productive of blessing, is not insufficient, Abandoned, or ignored, O our lord.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3849)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ قَالَ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيْرَ مَكْفُورٍ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبِّنَا»
8.4 [Machine] In gratitude for the food
٨۔٤ بَابٌ فِي الشُّكْرِ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The grateful eater is like the patient person who observes fasting."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الطَّاعِمُ الشَّاكِرُ كَالصَّائِمِ الصَّابِرِ»
8.5 [Machine] In licking fingers
٨۔٥ بَابٌ فِي لَعْقِ الْأَصَابِعِ
[Machine] From the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said, "When one of you eats, let him lick his three fingers."
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلَاثَ»
8.6 [Machine] In the napkin at the dining table
٨۔٦ بَابٌ فِي الْمِنْدِيلِ عِنْدَ الطَّعَامِ
The Prophet ﷺ said, 'When you eat, do not wipe your hands till you have licked it, or had it licked by somebody else." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5456)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ أَصَابِعَهُ أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا »
8.7 [Machine] In licking the newspaper
٨۔٧ بَابٌ فِي لَعْقِ الصَّحْفَةِ
[Machine] "Nubayshah, the servant of the Messenger of Allah, entered upon us while we were eating, so we invited him and he ate with us. Then he said, the Messenger of Allah narrated to us that 'whoever eats in a plate or bowl and licks it, the plate itself seeks forgiveness for him.'"
دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا نُبَيْشَةُ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَأْكُلُ طَعَامًا فَدَعَوْنَاهُ فَأَكَلَ مَعَنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ «مَنْ أَكَلَ فِي قَصْعَةٍ ثُمَّ لَحِسَهَا اسْتَغْفَرَتْ لَهُ الْقَصْعَةُ»
8.8 [Machine] In the summit, when it falls
٨۔٨ بَابٌ فِي اللُّقْمَةِ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a morsel of food falls from any of you, then let him wipe the dirt off it, mention the name of Allah, and eat it."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَمْسَحْ عَنْهَا التُّرَابَ وَلْيُسَمِّ اللَّهَ وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا»
[Machine] He said, "So, those executioners started mocking him, and they said to him, 'What do you see that these non-Arabs say? They say, 'Look at the food in front of him and what he does with this morsel.'" He said, "Indeed, I would not forsake what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding the saying of these non-Arabs. We were commanded that when a morsel falls from one of us, we should remove any harm from it and eat it."
قال فَجَعَلَ أُولَئِكَ الدَّهَاقِينُ يَتَغَامَزُونَ بِهِ فَقَالُوا لَهُ مَا تَرَى مَا يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَعَاجِمُ يَقُولُونَ انْظُرُوا إِلَى مَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَإِلَى مَا يَصْنَعُ بِهَذِهِ اللُّقْمَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَدَعَ مَا سَمِعْتُ منْ رسولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِقَوْلِ هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَعَاجِمِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِنَا أَنْ يُمِيطَ مَا بِهَا مِنَ الْأَذَى وَأَنْ يَأْكُلَهَا»
8.9 [Machine] Eating with the right hand
٨۔٩ بَابُ الْأَكْلِ بِالْيَمِينِ
When any one of you intends to eat (meal), he should eat with his right hand. and when he (intends) to drink he should drink with his right hand, for the Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand. (Using translation from Muslim 2020a)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِيَمِينِهِ وَلْيَشْرَبْ بِيَمِينِهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ وَيَشْرَبُ بِشِمَالِهِ»
The above-mentioned tradition has also been transmitted by Abu Hurairah through a different chain of narrators to the same effect. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 865)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِهِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Busrah ibn Ra'i al-A'iri eating with his left hand, so he said, "Eat with your right hand." He replied, "I cannot." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You cannot?" The man said, "Then my right hand has become paralyzed."
أَبْصَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بُسْرَ بْنَ رَاعِي الْعِيرِ يَأْكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ فَقَالَ «كُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «لَا اسْتَطَعْتَ» قَالَ فَمَا وَصَلَتْ يَمِينُهُ إِلَى فِيهِ
8.10 [Machine] Eating with three fingers
٨۔١٠ بَابُ الْأَكْلِ بِثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَ
The Prophet ﷺ used to eat with three fingers and not wipe his before licking it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3848)
«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ بِثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَ وَلَا يَمْسَحُ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا»
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ used to eat with his three fingers, and when he finished, he would lick them." Hisham also pointed with his three fingers.
«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِأَصَابِعِهِ الثَّلَاثِ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ لَعِقَهَا» وَأَشَارَ هِشَامٌ بِأَصَابِعِهِ الثَّلَاثِ
8.11 [Machine] In hospitality
٨۔١١ بَابٌ فِي الضِّيَافَةِ
He who believes in Allah and in the last day should honour his guest; he who believes in Allah and in the last day should not harm his neighbor; he who believes in Allah and in the last day should speak good or keep silence. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5154)
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ جَارَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِِيَصْمُتْ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ جَائِزَتَهُ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً وَالضِّيَافَةُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ صَدَقَةٌ»
"Whoever believes in the Last Day, let him treat his neighbour well. Whoever believes in Allah and Last Day, let him honor his guest. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say something good or else remain silent" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3672)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُحْسِنْ إِلَى جَارِهِ وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ»
The Prophet ﷺ said: If any Muslim is a guest of people and is given nothing, it is the duty of every Muslim to help him to the extent of taking for him from their crop and property for the entertainment of one night. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3751)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَيُّمَا مُسْلِمٍ ضَافَ قَوْمًا فَأَصْبَحَ الضَّيْفُ مَحْرُومًا فَإِنَّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ نَصْرَهُ حَتَّى يَأْخُذَ لَهُ بِقِرَى لَيْلَتِهِ مِنْ زَرْعِهِ وَمَالِهِ»
8.12 [Machine] The fly falls into the food.
٨۔١٢ بَابُ الذُّبَابِ يَقَعُ فِي الطَّعَامِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a fly falls in the drink of one of you, he should dip it all in and then remove it, for in one of its wings there is a disease and in the other there is a cure."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا سَقَطَ الذُّبَابٌ فِي شَرَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَغْمِسْهُ كُلَّهُ ثُمَّ لِيَنْزِعْهُ فَإِنَّ فِي أَحَدِ جَنَاحَيْهِ دَاءً وَفِي الْآخَرِ شِفَاءً»
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "When a fly falls into the vessel of any one of you, let him immerse it, for indeed in one of its wings there is a disease and in the other there is a cure." Abu Muhammad said, "Except for Hammaad, Thumamah, and Anas in the place of Abu Hurayrah, and a group that says it is from al-Qaqa' (another narrator) from Abu Hurayrah." And the narration of Ubayd ibn Hunayn is the most authentic.
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا وَقَعَ الذُّبَابٌ فِي إِنَاءِ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَغْمِسْهُ فَإِنَّ فِي أَحَدِ جَنَاحَيْهِ دَاءً وَفِي الْآخَرِ شِفَاءً قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد قَالَ غَيْرُ حَمَّادٍ ثُمَامَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ مَكَانَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَقَوْمٌ يَقُولُونَ عَنْ الْقَعْقَاعِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ «وَحَدِيثُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ حُنَيْنٍ أَصَحُّ»
8.13 [Machine] The believer eats in one stomach.
٨۔١٣ بَابُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يَأْكُلُ فِي مِعًى وَاحِدٍ
“The disbeliever eats with seven intestines and the believer eats with one intestine.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3257)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «الْمُؤْمِنُ يَأْكُلُ فِي مِعًى وَاحِدٍ وَالْكَافِرُ يَأْكُلُ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَمْعَاءٍ»
Abu Dawud said “I heard Muhammad bin Isa narrating this tradition who said Mu’tamar narrated it to us. And he (Mu’tamar) said “ I heard Al Hakam bin Aban narrating this tradition. He did not mention the name of Ibn ‘Abbas. Abu Dawud said “Al Hussain bin Huraith wrote to me saying “Al Fadl bin Musa narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas to the same effect from the Prophet ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2225)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ح
Abu Dawud said “I heard Muhammad bin Isa narrating this tradition who said Mu’tamar narrated it to us. And he (Mu’tamar) said “ I heard Al Hakam bin Aban narrating this tradition. He did not mention the name of Ibn ‘Abbas. Abu Dawud said “Al Hussain bin Huraith wrote to me saying “Al Fadl bin Musa narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas to the same effect from the Prophet ﷺ. عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ
“The disbeliever eats with seven intestines and the believer eats with one intestine.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3257)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «الْمُؤْمِنُ يَأْكُلُ فِي مِعًى وَاحِدٍ وَالْكَافِرُ يَأْكُلُ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَمْعَاءٍ»
8.14 [Machine] The food of one is sufficient for two.
٨۔١٤ بَابُ طَعَامُ الْوَاحِدِ يَكْفِي الِاثْنَيْنِ
“The food of one person is sufficient for two, the food of two is sufficient for four, and the food for four is sufficient for eight.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3254)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ «طَعَامُ الْوَاحِدِ يَكْفِي الِاثْنَيْنِ وَطَعَامُ الِاثْنَيْنِ يَكْفِي الْأَرْبَعَةَ وَطَعَامُ الْأَرْبَعَةِ يَكْفِي ثَمَانِيَةً»
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "In the name of Allah, and eat whatever is before you."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ «سَمِّ اللَّهَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ»
8.15 [Machine] In the one who eats what follows it
٨۔١٥ بَابٌ فِي الَّذِي يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا يَلِيهِ
لا أوجد
8.16 [Machine] Prohibition of eating the core until its sides are eaten.
٨۔١٦ بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنْ أَكْلِ وَسَطِ الثَّرِيدِ حَتَّى يَأْكُلَ جَوَانِبَهُ
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with a handful or a piece of bread, and he said, 'Eat from its edges or sides and do not eat from its center, for blessings descend in its center.'"
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِجَفْنَةٍ أَوْ قَالَ قَصْعَةٍ مِنْ ثَرِيدٍ فَقَالَ كُلُوا مِنْ حَافَاتِهَا أَوْ قَالَ جَوَانِبِهَا وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنْ وَسَطِهَا فَإِنَّ الْبَرَكَةَ تَنْزِلُ فِي وَسَطِهَا
8.17 [Machine] Prohibition on eating hot food
٨۔١٧ بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنْ أَكْلِ الطَّعَامِ الْحَارِّ
[Machine] "It used to be that when she was brought a throw, she would command it to be covered until its heat and smoke disappear, and she would say, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'It is greater in blessing.'"
أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ إِذَا أُتِيَتْ بِثَرِيدٍ أَمَرَتْ بِهِ فَغُطِّيَ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ فَوْرَةُ وَدُخَانُهُ وَتَقُولُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هُوَ أَعْظَمُ لِلْبَرَكَةِ»
8.18 [Machine] Which meal was most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?
٨۔١٨ بَابُ أَيُّ الْإِدَامِ كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of my hand one day (and led me) to his residence. There was presented to him some pieces of bread, whereupon he said: Is there no condiment? They (the members of his household) said: No, except some vinegar. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Vinegar is a good condiment. Jabir said: I have always loved vinegar since I heard it trom Allah's Apostle ﷺ. Talha said: I have always loved vinegar since I heard about it from Jabir. (Using translation from Muslim 2052b)
أَخَذَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِيَدِي ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ فَقَالَ «هَلْ مِنْ غَدَاءٍ أَوْ مِنْ عَشَاءٍ؟» شَكَّ طَلْحَةُ قَالَ فَأَخْرَجَ إِلَيْهِ فِلَقًا مِنْ خُبْزٍ فَقَالَ «أَمَا مِنْ أُدْمٍ؟» قَالُوا لَا إِلَّا شَيْءٌ مِنْ خَلٍّ فَقَالَ «هَاتُوهُ فَنِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ» قَالَ جَابِرٌ «فَمَا زِلْتُ أُحِبُّ الْخَلَّ مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ «فَمَا زِلْتُ أُحِبُّهُ مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ جَابِرٍ»
What a good condiment vinegar is! (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3820)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ أَوْ نِعْمَ الْأُدْمُ الْخَلُّ»
8.19 [Machine] There is no context provided for the phrase "الْقَرْعِ" in Arabic, so it cannot be accurately translated into English.
٨۔١٩ بَابُ الْقَرْعِ
I saw the Prophet ﷺ being served with soup and containing gourd and cured meat, and I saw him picking and eating the pieces of gourd. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5437)
«رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِمَرَقَةٍ فِيهَا دُبَّاءٌ وَقَدِيدٌ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَتَتَبَّعُ الدُّبَّاءَ يَأْكُلُهُ»
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ used to like pumpkin." He said, "So it was brought to him and I started eating it while he placed it in front of him."
«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعْجِبُهُ الْقَرْعُ» قَالَ «فَقُدِّمَ إِلَيْهِ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَنَاوَلُهُ وَأَجْعَلُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ»
8.20 [Machine] In the virtue of olive oil
٨۔٢٠ بَابٌ فِي فَضْلِ الزَّيْتِ
‘Season (your food) with olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3319)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كُلُوا الزَّيْتَ فَإِنَّهُ مُبَارَكٌ وَائْتَدِمُوا بِهِ وَادَّهِنُوا بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ»
8.21 [Machine] In eating garlic
٨۔٢١ بَابٌ فِي أَكْلِ الثُّومِ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said in the Battle of Khaybar, "Whoever eats from this tree, meaning garlic, should not come to the mosques."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ فِي غَزْوَةِ خَيْبَرَ «مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ يَعْنِي الثُّومَ فَلَا يَأْتِيَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ»
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with us and we provided him with food in which there was something from these dishes. When we brought it to him, he disliked it and said to his companions, "Eat, for I am not like any of you. I fear that my companion will be hurt." Abu Muhammad said, "If no one is hurt, then there is no harm in eating it."
نَزَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتَكَلَّفْنَا لَهُ طَعَامًا فِيهِ شَيْءٌ مِنْ بَعْضِ هَذِهِ الْبُقُولِ فَلَمَّا أَتَيْنَا بِهِ كَرِهَهُ وَقَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ «كُلُوا فَإِنِّي لَسْتُ كَأَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ أُوذِيَ صَاحِبِي» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد «إِذَا لَمْ يُؤْذِ أَحَدًا فَلَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِ»
8.22 [Machine] In the consumption of chicken
٨۔٢٢ بَابٌ فِي أَكْلِ الدَّجَاجِ
"We were with Abu Musa and His food was brought, including chicken. Among the people there was a man from banu Taimullah who had reddish complexion, as if he were a freed slave. He did not come close and Abu Musa said: "Come (and eat) for I saw the Messenger of All eating it"' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4347)
كُنَّا عِنْدَ أَبِي مُوسَى فَقَدَّمَ طَعَامُهُ فَقُدِّمَ فِي طَعَامِهِ لَحْمُ دَجَاجٍ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي تَيْمِ اللَّهِ أَحْمَرُ فَلَمْ يَدْنُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مُوسَى «ادْنُ فَإِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ»
Why do you put on the lower garment in this way? He replied: It is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4096)
«رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْكُلُهُ»
8.23 [Machine] Who detests to feed his food unless righteously
٨۔٢٣ بَابُ مَنْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يُطْعِمَ طَعَامَهُ إِلَّا َتْقِيًّا
"Do not accompany except a believer, and do not serve your food except to one with Taqwa." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2395)
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا تَصْحَبْ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنًا وَلَا يَأْكُلْ طَعَامَكَ إِلَّا تَقِيٌّ»
8.24 [Machine] The one who has not seen any harm in bringing together two things
٨۔٢٤ بَابُ مَنْ لَمْ يَرَ بَأْسًا أَنْ يُجْمَعَ بَيْنَ الشَّيْئَيْنِ
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating cucumbers with dates.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3325)
رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَأْكُلُ الْقِثَّاءَ بِالرُّطَبِ»
8.25 [Machine] Prohibition of the Quran.
٨۔٢٥ بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنِ الْقِرَانِ
"While at Medina we were struck with famine. Ibn Az-Zubair used to provide us with dates as our food. Ibn ʿUmar used to pass by us and say, "Don't eat two dates together at a time as the Prophet ﷺ has forbidden eating two dates together at a time (in a gathering) unless one takes the permission of one's companion brother." كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَأَصَابَتْنَا سَنَةٌ فَكَانَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ يَرْزُقُ التَّمْرَ وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَمُرُّ بِنَا وَيَقُولُ لَا تُقَارِنُوا «فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْقِرَانِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَأْذِنَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ»
8.26 [Machine] In the date (fruit)
٨۔٢٦ بَابٌ فِي التَّمْرِ
[Machine] "From Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Aisha, a house in which its inhabitants do not pass by hunger or cause hunger to others.' This was said twice or thrice."
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ بَيْتٌ لَا تَمْرَ فِيهِ جِيَاعٌ أَهْلُهُ أَوْ جَاعَ أَهْلُهُ » مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا
A family which has dates will not be hungry. (Using translation from Muslim 2046a)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَا يَجُوعُ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ عِنْدَهُمُ التَّمْرُ»
[Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say, "Dates were presented to the Prophet (pbuh), so he started distributing them."
سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ أُهْدِيَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ تَمْرٌ «فَأَخَذَ يُهَدِّيهِ»
8.27 [Machine] In ablution after eating
٨۔٢٧ بَابٌ فِي الْوُضُوءِ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever goes to sleep with the smell of garlic on his hand and then experiences a bad odor, he has no one to blame but himself."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ نَامَ وَفِي يَدِهِ رِيحُ غَمَرٍ فَعَرَضَ لَهُ عَارِضٌ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ»

٨۔٢٨ بَابٌ فِي الْوَلِيمَةِ
[Machine] "Indeed, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to Abdur Rahman ibn Awf when he saw a smallpox scar on him, 'Have you contracted chickenpox?' He replied, 'No, I got married.' The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, 'You should have been treated even if it was with a sheep."
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ وَرَأَى عَلَيْهِ وَضَرًا مِنْ صُفْرَةٍ «مَهْيَمْ؟» قَالَ تَزَوَّجْتُ قَالَ «أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ»
The Prophet ﷺ said: The wedding feast on the first day is a duty, that on the second is a good practice, but that on the third day is to make men hear of it and show it to them. Qatadah said: A man told me that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab was invited (to a wedding feast on the first day and he accepted it. He was again invited on the second day, and he accepted. When he was invited on the third day, he did not accept; he said: They are the people who make men hear of it and show it to them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3745)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «الْوَلِيمَةُ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ حَقٌّ وَالثَّانِيَ مَعْرُوفٌ وَالثَّالِثَ سُمْعَةٌ وَرِيَاءٌ» قَالَ قَتَادَةُ وَحَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّهُ دُعِيَ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ فَأَجَابَ وَدُعِيَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّانِيَ فَأَجَابَ وَدُعِيَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّالِثَ فَحَصَبَ الرَّسُولَ وَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ وَقَالَ «أَهْلُ سُمْعَةٍ وَرِيَاءٍ»
The worst kind of food is that at a wedding feast to which the rich are invited and from which the poor are left out. If anyone does not attend the feast to which he was invited, he has disobeyed Allah and His Apostle (may peace upon him). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3742)
أَنَّهُ قَالَ «شَرُّ الطَّعَامِ طَعَامُ الْوَلِيمَةِ يُدْعَى إِلَيْهِ الْأَغْنِيَاءُ وَيُتْرَكُ الْمَسَاكِينُ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ الدَّعْوَةَ فَقَدْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ»
[Machine] A man came who had prepared food to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "O Messenger of Allah, like this," and he pointed to it with his hand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, saying, "Like this," and gestured towards Aisha. He replied, "No," so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. He pointed to it a second time, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him again. He pointed to it a third time, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "What about this?" He replied, "Yes," so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Aisha went with him and had some of his food.
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ قَدْ صَنَعَ طَعَامًا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ هَكَذَا وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ يَقُولُ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَكَذَا» وَأَشَارَ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ قَالَ لَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ الثَّانِيَةَ وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «وَهَذِهِ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَائِشَةُ فَأَكَلَا مِنْ طَعَامِهِ
