8. Book of Food (2/2)
٨۔ كِتَابُ الْأَطْعِمَةِ ص ٢
[Machine] He is called Abu Shuayb and he had a young worker. He said, "Make food for me and invite the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for the fifth of five." So he invited the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for the fifth of five. A man followed them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "You invited us for the fifth of five and this man has followed me. If you want, you can allow him, and if you want, you can leave him." He said, "So he allowed him."
يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ وَكَانَ لَهُ غُلَامٌ لَحَّامٌ فَقَالَ اصْنَعْ لِي طَعَامًا أَدْعُو رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ قَالَ فَدَعَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ فَتَبِعَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ دَعَوْتَنَا خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ وَهَذَا رَجُلٌ قَدْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَذِنْتَ لَهُ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ تَرَكْتَهُ» قَالَ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ
8.29 [Machine] In the Virtue of the Thurayya.
٨۔٢٩ بَابٌ فِي فَضْلِ الثَّرِيدِ
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The superiority of ‘Aishah over other women is like the superiority of Tharid over all other foods.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3281)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَضْلُ عَائِشَةَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ كَفَضْلِ الثَّرِيدِ عَلَى سَائِرِ الطَّعَامِ»
8.30 [Machine] Who is it preferable to tear the meat and not cut it?
٨۔٣٠ بَابٌ فِيمَنِ اسْتَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْهَسَ اللَّحْمَ، وَلَا يَقْطَعَهُ
[Machine] "Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal married me off on behalf of my father in the reign of Uthman. He invited a group of companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and among those he invited was Safwan ibn Umayyah, who was an elderly gentleman. He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tenderize the meat thoroughly, for it is more delicious and more enjoyable."'
عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ زَوَّجَنِي أَبِي فِي إِمَارَةِ عُثْمَانَ فَدَعَا رَهْطًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ فِيمَنْ دَعَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ وَهُوَ شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «انْهَسُوا اللَّحْمَ نَهْسًا فَإِنَّهُ أَشْهَى وَأَمْرَأُ»
8.31 [Machine] In Food, Reclining
٨۔٣١ بَابٌ فِي الْأَكْلِ مُتَّكِئًا
I do not eat while reclining. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3769)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا آكُلُ مُتَّكِئًا»
8.32 [Machine] In the morning
٨۔٣٢ بَابٌ فِي الْبَاكُورَةِ
“O Allah, bless us in our city and in our fruits, in our Mudd and in our Sa’,* blessing upon blessing.” Then he would give it to the smallest of the children present. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3329)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِالْبَاكُورَةِ بِأَوَّلِ الثَّمَرَةِ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي مَدِينَتِنَا وَفِي ثَمَرَتِنَا وَفِي مُدِّنَا وَفِي صَاعِنَا بَرَكَةً مَعَ بَرَكَةٍ» ثُمَّ يُعْطِيهِ أَصْغَرَ مَنْ يَحْضُرُهُ مِنَ الْوِلْدَانِ
8.33 [Machine] In honoring the servant during the meal
٨۔٣٣ بَابٌ فِي إِكْرَامِ الْخَادِمِ عِنْدَ الطَّعَامِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When your servant brings you food, make him sit and if he refuses, then serve him."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا جَاءَ خَادِمُ أَحَدِكُمْ بِالطَّعَامِ فَلْيُجْلِسْهُ فَإِنْ أَبَى فَلْيُنَاوِلْهُ»
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you's servant brings him food, let him make him sit with him or let him give him a bite or two, or a meal or two, for he is his guardian and companion."
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدَكُمْ خَادِمُهُ بِطَعَامٍ فَلْيُجْلِسْهُ مَعَهُ أَوْ َلْيُنَاوِلْهُ لُقْمَةً أَوْ لُقْمَتَيْنِ أَوْ أُكْلَةً أَوْ أُكْلَتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ وَلِيَ حَرَّهُ وَدُخَانَهُ»
8.34 [Machine] In sweets and honey.
٨۔٣٤ بَابٌ فِي الْحَلْوَاءِ وَالْعَسَلِ
“The Messenger of Allah 9saw) used to like sweets and honey.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3323)
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُحِبُّ الْحَلْوَاءَ وَالْعَسَلَ»
8.35 [Machine] In eating and drinking without ablution
٨۔٣٥ بَابٌ فِي الْأَكْلِ وَالشُّرْبِ عَلَى غَيْرِ وُضُوءٍ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came out of the toilet and food was brought to him. It was said to him, "Don't you perform ablution?" He replied, "Should I perform prayer and then perform ablution?" Abu Muhammad said, "He is Sa'id ibn al-Huwairith."
خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ الْبَرَازِ فَقُدِّمَ إِلَيْهِ الطَّعَامٌ فَقِيلَ لَهُ أَلَا تَوَضَّأُ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ «أُصَلِّي فَأَتَوَضَّأُ؟» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد «إِنَّمَا هُوَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْحُوَيْرِثِ»
A similar tradition has also been transmitted by Ibn 'Abbas through a different chain of narrators. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2127)
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ
عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ
8.36 [Machine] In the south, he eats
٨۔٣٦ بَابٌ فِي الْجُنُبِ يَأْكُلُ
"If the Messenger of Allah wanted to eat when he was sexually impure, he would perform ablution." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 591)
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَجْنَبَ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ أَوْ يَنَامَ تَوَضَّأَ»
8.37 [Machine] In increasing the water in the pot
٨۔٣٧ بَابٌ فِي إِكْثَارِ الْمَاءِ فِي الْقِدْرِ
Whenever you prepare a broth, add water to it, and have in your mind the members of the household of your neighbours and then give them out of this with courtesy. (Using translation from Muslim 2625c)
«إِذَا طَبَخْتَ مَرَقَةً فَأَكْثِرْ مَاءَهَا ثُمَّ انْظُرْ أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ مِنْ جِِيرَانِكََ فَاغْرِفْ لَهُمْ مِنْهَا»
8.38 [Machine] In removing shoes during meals
٨۔٣٨ بَابٌ فِي خَلْعِ النِّعَالِ عِنْدَ الْأَكْلِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the food is served, remove your shoes, for it is better for your feet."
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا وُضِعَ الطَّعَامُ فَاخْلَعُوا نِعَالَكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ أَرْوَحُ لِأَقْدَامِكُمْ»
8.39 [Machine] In Feeding Food
٨۔٣٩ بَابٌ فِي إِطْعَامِ الطَّعَامِ
"Worship the Most Merciful and spread (the greeting of) peace.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3694)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اعْبُدُوا الرَّحْمَنَ وَأَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ تَدْخُلُوا الْجِنَانَ»
8.40 [Machine] In the call/invitation
٨۔٤٠ بَابٌ فِي الدَّعْوَةِ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Respond to the caller when you are invited." He said, "And Abdullah used to attend invitations, whether they were wedding celebrations or not, even while fasting."
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَجِيبُوا الدَّاعِيَ إِذَا دُعِيتُمْ» قَالَ وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَأْتِي الدَّعْوَةَ فِي الْعُرْسِ وَفِي غَيْرِ الْعُرْسِ وَيَأْتِيهَا وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ
8.41 [Machine] In the mouse, falling in the ghee, it died.
٨۔٤١ بَابٌ فِي الْفَأْرَةِ تَقَعُ فِي السَّمْنِ فَمَاتَتْ
a mouse fell into some cooking fat and died. The Prophet was asked (about that) and he said: "Throw it away, and whatever is around it, and eat (the rest)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4258)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنْ فَأْرَةٍ وَقَعَتْ فِي سَمْنٍ فَقَالَ «أَلْقُوهَا وَمَا حَوْلَهَا وَكُلُوا»
[Machine] This cannot be translated into English as it is an incomplete sentence and the meaning depends on the context.
عَنْ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a rat that fell into oil and died, so he said: "Take it and what is around it, then discard it."
سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ فَأْرَةٍ وَقَعَتْ فِي سَمْنٍ فَمَاتَتْ فَقَالَ «خُذُوهَا وَمَا حَوْلَهَا فَاطْرَحُوهُ»
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, about him, Abu Muhammad said: "When it is in a liquid state, pour it."
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد «إِذَا كَانَ ذَائِبًا أُهَرِيقَ»
8.42 [Machine] In Hebron
٨۔٤٢ بَابٌ فِي التَّخْلِيلِ
[Machine] He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever eats, let him rinse his mouth, and whatever he rinses from it, let him spit it out, and whatever remains in his mouth, let him swallow it."
عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَتَخَلَّلْ فَمَا تَخَلَّلَ فَلْيَلْفِظْهُ وَمَا لَاكَ بِلِسَانِهِ فَلْيَبْتَلِعْ»
