5. Book of Rites (2/4)
A woman from the tribe of Khath'am asked for the verdict of Messenger of Allah ﷺ (regarding something) during Hajjat-ul-Wadaʿ while Al-Fadl bin ʿAbbas was the companion-rider behind Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She asked, "Allah's ordained obligation (i.e. compulsory Hajj) enjoined on His slaves has become due on my old father who cannot sit firmly on the riding animal. Will it be sufficient if I perform the Hajj on his behalf?" He said, "Yes." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4399)
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , a narration from the hadith of Al-Awza'i.
he was riding behind the Messenger of Allah and a man came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! My mother is an old woman and she cannot sit firmly in the saddle. If I tie her I fear that I may kill her." The Messenger of Allah said: "Don't you think that if your mother owed a debt you would pay it off?" He said: "Yes." Her said: "Then perform Hajj on behalf of your mother."(Shih) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2643)
5.24 [Machine] Hajj for the deceased
"A man from Khath'am came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'My father is an old man who cannot ride, and the command of Allah to perform Hajj has come. Will it be good enough if I perform Hajj on his behalf?' He said: 'Are you the oldest of his children?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Don't you think that if he owed a debt you would pay it off?, He' said: 'Yes.' He said: 'then perform Hajj on his behalf.'''(Daif) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2638)
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, my father is an old man who is unable to perform Hajj." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you considered if your father had a debt and you paid it off, would that be accepted from him?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah is more merciful to perform Hajj on behalf of your father."
5.25 [Machine] In the reception of the stone
Ibn ʿUmar. said, "I have never missed the touching of these two stones of Kaʿba (the Black Stone and the Yemenite Corner) both in the presence and the absence of crowds, since I saw the Prophet ﷺ touching them." I asked Nafiʿ: "Did Ibn ʿUmar use to walk between the two Corners?" Nafiʿ replied, "He used to walk in order that it might be easy for him to touch it (the Corner Stone)." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1606)
5.26 [Machine] The privilege of receiving the stone
The Messenger of Allah said about the (Black) Stone: "By Allah! Allah will raise it on the Day of Resurrection with two eyes by which it sees and a tongue that it speaks with, testifying to whoever touched it in truth." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 961)
5.27 [Machine] The translation of the heading is as follows: "Who threw three and walked four.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw pebbles from one stone to another stone three times."
Ibn ʿUmar said, "When Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the first Tawaf he did Ramal in the first three rounds and then walked in the remaining four rounds (of Tawaf of the Kaʿba), where as in performing Tawaf between Safa and Marwa he used to run in the midst of the rainwater passage," I asked Nafiʿ, "Did ʿAbdullah (bin ʿUmar) use to walk steadily on reaching the Yemenite Corner?" He replied, "No, unless people were crowded at the Corner; otherwise he would not leave it without touching it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1644)
Nafi' reported on the authority of Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) that Messenger of Allah ﷺ walked swiftly from stone to stone in three circuits and walked (normally) in four. (Using translation from Muslim 1262a)
5.28 [Machine] The imprint in the sand
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ , it is narrated that he performed tawaf while wearing sandals.
5.29 [Machine] The circumambulation of Al-Qarin.
“Whoever enters Ihram for Hajj and ‘Umrah, one Tawaf is sufficient for both, and he should not exit Ihram until he has completed his Hajj, when he should exit Ihram for both.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2975)
5.30 [Machine] Circumambulation around the Kaaba
Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Tawaf (of the Kaʿba) riding a camel (at that time the Prophet ﷺ had a foot injury). Whenever he came to the Corner (having the Black Stone) he would point out towards it with a thing in his hand and say, "Allahu-Akbar." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1632)
5.31 [Machine] What does a woman do when she is menstruating
[Machine] I went to Makkah while I was menstruating and I didn't perform Sa'i (the walks between the hills of Safa and Marwa). I complained about it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Do everything that the pilgrims do, except do not perform Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba."
5.32 [Machine] Talking About Tawaf
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "Circumambulating the Kaaba is a prayer, except that Allah has allowed speaking during it. So, whoever speaks during it should only speak good."
This tradition has also been narrated on the authority of ‘A’ishah through a different chain. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 99)
5.33 [Machine] Praying behind the Maqam
[Machine] Omar Ibn Al Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah, 'If you had taken the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.' Then Allah revealed the verse: 'And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer.' [Surah Al Baqarah, verse 125]."
5.34 [Machine] In the Sunnah of Hajj
“We entered upon Jabir bin ‘Abdullah, and when we reached him he asked about the people (i.e., what their names were, etc.). When he reached me, I said: ‘I am Muhammad bin ‘Ali bin Husain.’ He stretched forth his hand towards my head, and undid my top button, then undid my lower button. Then he placed his hand on my chest, and I was a young boy at that time. Then he said: ‘Welcome to you, ask whatever you want.’ So I asked him, and he was blind. The time for prayer came, so he stood up, wrapping himself in a woven cloth. Every time he put it on his shoulders, its edges came up, because it was too small. And his cloak was beside him on a hook. He led us in prayer, then he said: ‘Tell us about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ He held up his hands, showing nine (fingers), and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed for nine years without performing Hajj, then it was announced to the people in the tenth year that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going for Hajj. So many people came to Al-Madinah, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do what he did. He set out and we set out with him, and we came to Dhul-Hulaifah where Asma’ bint ‘Umais gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking what she should do. He said: “Perform Ghusl, fasten a cloth around your waist and enter Ihram.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the mosque, then he rode Qaswa’ (his she-camel) until, when his she-camel arose with him upon Baida’,’ Jabir said: ‘As far as I could see, I saw people riding and walking in front of him, and I saw the same to his right and left, and behind him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us and Qur’an was being revealed to him, and he understood its meaning. Whatever he did, we did too. Then he began the Talbiyah of monotheism: “Labbaika Allahumma labbaik, labbaika la sharika laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika laka (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner).” And the people repeated his words. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approved of that. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued to recite the Talbiyah.’ Jabir said: ‘We did not intend (to do) anything but Hajj. We were not aware of ‘Umrah. Then when we reached the House with him, he touched the Corner, and walked quickly (Ramal) for three circuits and walked (normally) for four. Then he stood at the place of Ibrahim and said: “And take you (people) the place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” [2:125] He stood with the place between him and the House. My father used to say:* “And I do not think that he mentioned it other than from the Prophet ﷺ: ‘That he used to recite in those two Rak’ah (at the place of Ibrahim): “Say: ‘O you disbelievers!’” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and “Say: ‘He is Allah, (the) One.’” [Al-Ikhlas (112)] “Then he went back to the House and touched the Corner, then he went out through the gate to Safa. When he drew near to Safa he recited: “Verily, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah,” [2:158] (and said:) “We will start with that with which Allah started.” So he started with Safa and climbed it until he could see the House, then proclaimed the greatness of Allah (by saying: Allahu Akbar) and said Tahlil (La ilaha illallah) and praised Him (saying Al-Hamdulillah), and he said: “La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku, wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyi wa yumit wa huwa ‘ala kulli shai’in Qadir. La ilaha illallah wahdahu, La sharika lahu anjaza wa’dahu, wa nasara ‘abduhu, wa hazamal-Ahzaba wahdahu (None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, with no partner or associate; His is the dominion, all praise is due to Him, He gives life and causes death and He is able to do all things. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone; He has no partner or associate, He fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His slave, and defeated the Confederates alone).” And he said that three times, supplication in between. Then he headed towards Marwah walking normally until, when he started to go downhill, he walked quickly (Ramal) in the bottom of the valley. When he started to go uphill, he walked normally, until he reached Marwah, and he did atop Marwah what he had done atop Safa. At the end of his Sa’y, atop Marwah he said: “If I had known before what I have come to know now, I would not have garlanded the sacrificial animal, and I would have made it ‘Umrah. Whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit Ihram and make it ‘Umrah.” So all the people exited Ihram and cut their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them. Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju’shum stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Is this for this year only, or forever and ever?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said: “‘Umrah is included in Hajj like this,” twice. “No, it is forever and ever.” ‘Ali brought the camels of the Prophet ﷺ, and he found that Fatimah was one of those who had exited Ihram. She had put on a dyed garment and used kohl. ‘Ali disliked this action on her part, but she said: “My father told me to do this.” ‘Ali used to say in Iraq: “So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, feeling upset with Fatimah because of what she had done, to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what she had said that he said, and that I had disliked that. He said: ‘She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. What did you say when you began your Hajj?’” He said: “I said: ‘O Allah, I begin the Talbiyah for that for which your Messenger ﷺ begins the Talbiyah.’ (He said:) ‘And I have the sacrificial animal with me, so do not exit Ihram.’ He said: “The total number of sacrificial animals that ‘Ali had brought from Yemen and that the Prophet ﷺ brought from Al-Madinah were one hundred. Then all the people exited Ihram and cut their hair, apart from the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them. When the day of Tarwiyah came (the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah), they headed for Mina and began the Talbiyah for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode. He prayed Zuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, ‘Isha’ and Fajr at Mina. Then he stayed for a short while until the sun rose, and he ordered that a tent of goat hair be pitched for him in Namirah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and the Quraish were certain that he was going to stay at Al-Mash’ar Haram or at Al-Muzdalifah, as Quraish used to do during the Ignorance days. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued until he came to ‘Arafat, where he found that the tent had been pitched for him in Namirah, and he stopped there. Then when the sun had passed its zenith, he called for Qaswa’ and she was saddled for him. He rode until he came to the bottom of the valley, and he addressed the people and said: ‘Your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Every matter of Ignorance days is abolished, beneath these two feet of mine. The blood feuds of the Ignorance days are abolished, and the first blood feud of Rabi’ah bin Harith, who was nursed among Banu Sa’d and killed by Hudhail. The usuries of Ignorance days are abolished, and the first usury (that I abolish) is our usury, the usury due to ‘Abbas bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib. It is all abolished. Fear Allah with regard to women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah, and intimacy with them has become permissible to you through Allah’s Word. Your rights over them are that they should not allow anyone whom you dislike to sit on your bedding.** If they do that, then hit them, but in a manner that does not cause injury or leave a mark. Their rights over you are that you should provide for them and clothe them in a reasonable manner. I have left behind you something which, if you adhere to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me. What will you say?’ They said: ‘We bear witness that you have conveyed (the message) and fulfilled (your duty) and offered sincere advice.’ He gestured with his forefinger towards the sky and then towards the people, (and said:) ‘O Allah, bear witness, O Allah bear witness,’ three times. Then Bilal called the Adhan, then the Iqamah, and he prayed Zuhr. Then he made Iqamah and prayed ‘Asr, and he did not offer any prayer between them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode until he came to the place of standing, and he made his she-camel face Sakharat*** with the path in the sand in front of him, and he faced the Qiblah, then he remained standing until the sun had set and the afterglow had lessened somewhat, when the disk of the sun disappeared. Then he seated Usamah bin Zaid behind him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out. He pulled Qaswa’s reins tight until her head was touching the saddle, and he gestured with his right hand: ‘O people, calmly, calmly!’ Every time he came to a hill, he released the reins a little so that she could climb. Then he came to Muzdalifah where he prayed Maghrib and ‘Isha’ with one Adhan and two Iqamah, offering no prayer in between. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down until dawn came, and he prayed Fajr, when he saw that morning had come, with one Adhan and one Iqamah. Then he rode Qaswa’ until he came to Al-Mash’ar Al-Haram. He climbed it and praised Allah and proclaimed His greatness and that He is the only One worthy of worship. Then he remained standing until it had become quite bright, then he moved on before the sun rose. He seated Fadl bin ‘Abbas behind him, who was a man with lovely hair, white and handsome. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved on, he passed some women riding camels. Fadl started to look at them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ put his hand on the other side. Fadl turned his face to the other side to look. When he came to Muhassir, he sped up a little. Then he followed the middle road that brings you out to the biggest Pillar, until he reached the Pillar that is by the tree. He threw seven pebbles, saying the Takbir with each throw, pebbles suitable for Khadhf (i.e., the size of a chickpea) throwing from the bottom of the valley. Then he went to the place of slaughter, and slaughtered sixty-three camels with his own hand. Then he handed it over to ‘Ali who slaughtered the rest, and he gave him a share in his sacrificial animal. Then he ordered that a piece from each camel be brought; (the pieces) were put in a pot and cooked, and they (the Prophet ﷺ and ‘Ali) ate from the meat and drank from the soup. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hastened to the House, and prayed Zuhr in Makkah. He came to Banu ‘Abdul-Muttalib, who were providing water to the pilgrims at Zamzam, and said: ‘Draw me some water, O Banu ‘Abdul-Muttalib. Were it not that the people would overwhelm you, I would have drawn water with you.’ So they drew up a bucket for him and he drank from it.’” * It appears that the speaker is Ja’far bin Muhammad who is narrating from his father, from Jabir. **And they say that the meaning if ‘your furniture’ or, ‘your special place’ in which case the objective is to say that the wife is not to admit anyone in the house whom the husband would be displeased with. ***Sakharat plural of Sakhrah rock or boulder. Nawawi said: “They are the rocks that lay at the base of the Mount of Mercy, and it is the mount in the middle of ‘Arafat.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3074)

"While a man was standing in Arafat with the Messenger of Allah, he fell from his mount and it killed him. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Wash him with water and lotus leaves, and shroud him in two cloths. Do not apply aromatics to him or cover his head, for Allah, the Might and Sublime, wil raise him on the Day of Resurrection reciting the Talbiyah.'". (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2855)

[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic phrase is: "Indeed, the purpose of circumambulating the Ka'bah, stoning the pillars, and walking between Safa and Marwa is for the remembrance of Allah." Abu Asim used to recite it.

I asked: Messenger of Allah, is the (command of) cancelling hajj meant exclusively for us, or for others too? He replied: No, this is meant exclusively for you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1808)
5.38 [Machine] Who performed 'Umrah during the months of Hajj
Ibn ‘Abbas reported the Prophet ﷺ as saying This is an ‘Umrah from which we have benefitted. Anyone who has brought sacrificial animal with him should take off ihram totally. ‘Umrah has been included in Hajj till the Day of Judgment. Abu Dawud said This is a munkar (uncommon) tradition. This is in fact the statement of Ibn ‘Abbas himself. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1790)
Ar-Rabi' ibn Saburah said on the authority of his father (Saburah): We went out along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ till we reached Usfan, Suraqah ibn Malik al-Mudlaji said to him: Messenger of Allah, explain to us like the people as if they were born today. He said: Allah, the Exalted, has included this umrah in your hajj. When you come (to Mecca), and he who goes round the House (the Ka'bah), and runs between as-Safa and al-Marwah, is allowed to take off ihram except he who has brought the sacrificial animals with him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1801)

I was hiding behind the Kaaba, and Ibn Umar said, "The people gathered and the Prophet ﷺ , Bilal, and Usama entered." So I asked Bilal from behind the door, "Where did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray?" Bilal replied, "Between the two Sara."
[Machine] He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house, along with Usama bin Zaid, Bilal, and Uthman bin Talha al-Hajabi, and he mentioned something similar to it."
5.44 [Machine] The heading in English is: "The Stone from the House
"The Messenger of Allah said: "Were it not for the fact that your people have recently left disbelief, I would have knocked down the House and rebuilt it on the foundation of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and I would have given it a back door. For when the Quraish built the House, they made it too small.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2901)
[Machine] I asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Black Stone, is it secure inside the Kaaba? He said, "Yes." I asked, "Then why don't they let people inside?" He said, "Your people cannot afford to provide for their expenses." I asked, "What about its elevated door?" He said, "Your people did that so that they can let in whomever they want and prevent whomever they want. If it wasn't for your people's recent departure from ignorance, I would have certainly had the stone removed and had its door placed on the ground."
5.45 [Machine] In Tashhib
[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas saying, "Al-Tahsib is nothing but a place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped." Abu Muhammad said, "Al-Tahsib is a location in Makkah and it is also a location in Al-Bathaa."
5.46 [Machine] How many prayers are performed in Mina before proceeding to Arafat?
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed five prayers in Mina."
‘Abd Al ‘Aziz bin Rufai’ said I asked Anas bin Malik saying “Tell me something you knew about the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ viz where he offered the noon prayer on Yawm Al Tarwiyah(8th of Dhu Al Hijjah). He replied, In Mina I asked Where did he pray the afternoon prayer on Yaum Al Nafr(12th or 13th of Dhu Al Hijjah). He replied In al-Abtah he then said “Do as your commanders do.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1912)
[Machine] He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha prayers and then slept in Mina. Then he rode to the house and performed Tawaf around it.
5.47 [Machine] Translation: "Shortening of prayer in Mina
[Machine] Abdullah prayed with Uthman in Mina four units of prayer. He said, "I have prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this place two units of prayer, and with Abu Bakr two units of prayer, and with Umar two units of prayer. Then our paths diverged. I wish I could have two accepted units of prayer from the four units."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two units of prayer in Mina, Abu Bakr performed two units of prayer, Umar performed two units of prayer, and Uthman performed two units of prayer as well. All of this was at the beginning of his caliphate, and then he completed them afterwards.
5.48 [Machine] Translation: How to perform the journey from Mina to Arafat?
[Machine] "We left with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Mina. Among us were those who performed the Takbeer and among us were those who performed the Talbiyah."
[Machine] About the tawaf, how did you used to interact with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said, "He used to perform tawaf with the performers of tawaf and he would not be denied, and he would magnify the magnifiers and he would not be denied."
5.49 [Machine] Standing at Arafat
[Machine] Jubair, I lost my camel so I went to search for it. "Then I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing with the people at Arafat." So I said, "By Allah, this is among the hillocks, so what is his relevance here?"
5.50 [Machine] All of Arafah is a standing.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw stones and then sat down for the people. A man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have shaved before slaughtering." He said, "There is no harm." Then another man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have performed Tawaf before throwing the stones." He said, "There is no harm." He was asked about something, and he said, "There is no harm," in response to everything. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every part of Arafat is a standing place, and every part of Muzdalifa is a standing place, and all of Mina is a place of slaughter, and every path of Makkah is a path and a place of slaughter."
5.51 [Machine] How is the traffic flow during the exodus from Arafat?
[Machine] "He was in the row behind the Prophet ﷺ , so he overflowed from Arafah, and he was walking with a slight tilt of the neck, and when he reached a valley, he stopped."
5.52 [Machine] Combining prayers through consolidation
Ibrahim bin ’Uqabah said “Kuraib told me that he asked Umamah bin Zaid saying tell me how you did in the evening when you rode behind the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. He said “We came to the valley where the people make their Camels kneel down to take rest at night.” The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ made his she Camel kneel down and he then urinated. He then called for water for ablution and performed the ablution but he did not perform minutely (but performed lightly). I asked Apostle of Allaah ﷺ, prayer? He replied “Prayer ahead of you”. He then mounted (the Camel) till we came to Al Muzadalifah. There iqamah for the sunset prayer was called. The people then made their Camels kneel down at their places. The Camels were not unloaded as yet, iqamah for the night prayers was called and he prayed. The people then unloaded the Camels. The narrator Muhammad added in his version of the tradition How did you do when the morning came? He replied Al Fadl rode behind him and I walked on foot among the people of the Quraish who went ahead. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1921)
