«إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُ هَذَا»
Umar came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said, "No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you I would not have kissed you."
أَنَّهُ جَاءَ إِلَى الْحَجَرِ الأَسْوَدِ، فَقَبَّلَهُ فَقَالَ: «إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَضُرُّ وَلاَ تَنْفَعُ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ».
"I saw ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab kissing the Black Stone and he then said, (to it) 'Had I not seen Allah's Apostle kissing you, (stone) I would not have kissed you.' "
رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَبَّلَ الْحَجَرَ وَقَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ
By Allah, I know that you are a stone and if I were not to see Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you. Harun said in his narration: A hadith like this has been transmitted to me by Zaid b. Aslam on the authority of his father Aslam.

I am kissing you, whereas I know that you are a stone, but I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you (that Is why I kiss you).
أَنَّ عُمَرَ قَبَّلَ الْحَجَرَ وَقَالَ إِنِّي لأُقَبِّلُكَ وَإِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ
I saw 'Umar (Allah'be pleased with him) kissing the Stone and saying: I am kissing you and I know that you are a stone. And if I had not seen Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.
رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ يُقَبِّلُ الْحَجَرَ وَيَقُولُ إِنِّي لأُقَبِّلُكَ وَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ لَمْ أُقَبِّلْكَ
AbuSa'id said: I saw Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' in the mosque of Damascus. He spat at the mat and then rubbed it with his foot. He was asked: Why did you do so? He said: Because I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing so.
لأَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُهُ
Abis bin Rabi’ah said on the authority of ‘Umar He(‘Umar) came to the (Black) Stone and said “ I know for sure that you are a stone which can neither benefit nor injure and had I not seen the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.”
إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَنْفَعُ وَلاَ تَضُرُّ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ
"I saw 'Umar bin Al-Khattab praying two rak'ahs in Dhul-Hulaifah and I asked him about that. He said: 'I am simply doing that which I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing.'"
إِنَّمَا أَفْعَلُ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُ

“I saw the bald forehead of ‘Umar bin Khattab when he kissed the Black Stone and said: ‘I am kissing you, although I know that you are only a stone and you can neither cause harm nor bring benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.’”
رَأَيْتُ الأُصَيْلِعَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يُقَبِّلُ الْحَجَرَ وَيَقُولُ إِنِّي لأُقَبِّلُكَ وَإِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَضُرُّ وَلاَ تَنْفَعُ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ

«إِنِّي لَأُقَبِّلُكَ وَإِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ»
I saw 'Umar look at the Black Stone and say: By Allah, were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not have kissed you. Then he kissed it.
أَمَا وَاللهِ لَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ قَبَّلَهُ
I saw 'Umar kissing the Black Stone and saying; I am kissing you and I know that you are just a stone; if I had not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.
عَنْ عَابِسِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَرَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ يُقَبِّلُ الْحَجَرَ وَيَقُولُ إِنِّي لَأُقَبِّلُكَ وَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ لَمْ أُقَبِّلْكَ
I know that you are only a stone. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not have kissed you.
قَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ وَلَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ
I saw ʿUmar kiss the Black Stone and say: I know that you are a stone and cannot cause harm or bring benefit, but I saw Abul-Qasim ﷺ show respect to you.
عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ قَالَرَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ يُقَبِّلُ الْحَجَرَ وَيَقُولُ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لَا تَضُرُّ وَلا تَنْفَعُ وَلَكِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ بِكَ حَفِيًّا
I saw ʿUmar go to the Black Stone and say: By Allah, I know that you are a stone and cannot cause harm or bring benefit. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not have kissed you. Then he leant down and kissed it.
أَمَا وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لَا تَضُرُّ وَلا تَنْفَعُ وَلَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ دَنَا فَقَبَّلَهُ
My father told me that ‘Umar bin al-Khattab ؓ said to the [Black] Stone; You are only a stone; were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not have kissed you. Then he kissed it.
لِلْحَجَرِ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ حَجَرٌ وَلَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ قَبَّلَهُ
I know that you are only a stone and you cannot cause harm or bring benefit. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah( ﷺ )kiss you, I would not have kissed you. Then he kissed it.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Umar ibn al-Khattab said to the corner of the Black Stone while he was doing tawaf of the House, "You are only a stone, and if I had not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not do so." Then he kissed it. Malik said, "I have heard some of the people of knowledge recommending someone doing tawaf of the House to put his hand to his mouth when he takes it from the Yamani corner."
قَالَ وَهُوَ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ لِلرُّكْنِ الأَسْوَدِ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ حَجَرٌ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ قَبَّلَهُ
Malik related to me from Zayd ibn Aslam that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give to a beggar even if he comes on a horse."
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَعْطُوا السَّائِلَ وَإِنْ جَاءَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ
"We prayed with Abdullah bin Mas'ud in his house. He stood between us and we placed our hands on our knees, but he took them off and made us interlace our fingers, and said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do that.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1030)
