I asked Ubay b. Kaʿb regarding the two Muʿawwidhāt (Sūrahs of seeking refuge in Allah). He said: I asked the Prophet ﷺ about them and he said, "They are for me and I have ˹recited˺ them." Now, we ˹recite˺ as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ˹recited.˺"  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَىَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] I said to my father, "Abdullah says about the two protecting surahs (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas)." He replied, "We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about them, and he said, 'It is said to me, so I say as he said.' "  

قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ إِنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ يَقُولُ فِي الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَأَنَا أَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ  

[Machine] I asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b about the two Mu'awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas). He said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ about them and he said, 'It has been revealed to me, so I am informing you.'"  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺعَنْهُمَا فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ لَكُمْ فَقُولُوا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ فَقَالَ لَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ  

[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the two protective surahs. So he said to me, "It was said to me, so I said it to you."  

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ قَالَ أُبَيٌّ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ  

[Machine] "I asked Ubayy about the two protective surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas), and he said that he also asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about them. He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to recite them."  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيًّا عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ عَنْهُمَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ  

[Machine] I said to my father: "Indeed, your brother is taking them from the Mus'haf." It was said to Sufyan ibn Mas'ud, "Is that true?" He did not deny it. He said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, 'It was said to me, so I said it.' "

Sufyan said, "He used to seek refuge for both of them, and they are not in the Mus'haf of Ibn Mas'ud. He would make them a means of seeking protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, but he did not recite them in any part of his prayer. So he thought they were two surahs for seeking refuge and persisted in his belief. Those who came after him confirmed that they are from the Qur'an, so they preserved them and entrusted them to him."  

قُلْتُ لِأُبَيٍّ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ يَحُكُّهُمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ قِيلَ لِسُفْيَانَ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ؟ فَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَاَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ۔

قَالَ سُفْيَانُ يَحُكُّهُمَا الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَلَيْسَا فِي مُصْحَفِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ كَانَ يَرَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُعَوِّذُ بِهِمَا الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ وَلَمْ يَسْمَعْهُ يَقْرَؤُهُمَا فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ فَظَنَّ أَنَّهُمَا عُوذَتَانِ وَأَصَرَّ عَلَى ظَنِّهِ وَتَحَقَّقَ الْبَاقُونَ كَوْنَهُمَا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَأَوْدَعُوهُمَا إِيَّاهُ  

[Machine] I said to Ubayy ibn Ka'b, "Indeed, Ibn Mas'ud does not write the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) in his mushaf (copy of the Quran)." He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Gabriel said to me: "Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.'" So I said it, and Gabriel said to me, 'Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.'" So I said it.' Therefore, we say what the Messenger of Allah said."  

قُلْتُ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ لَا يَكْتُبُ فِي مُصْحَفِهِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ {قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ} فَقُلْتُهَا وَقَالَ لِي {قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ} فَقُلْتُهَا» فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about these two Surahs, so he said, "I was told, so I said, say as I said."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنْ هَاتَيْنِ السُّورَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ «قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَقُولُوا كَمَا قُلْتُ»  

I asked Ubay b. Kaʿb regarding the two Muʿawwidhāt (Sūrahs of seeking refuge in Allah). He said: I asked the Prophet ﷺ about them and he said, "They are for me and I have ˹recited˺ them." Now, we ˹recite˺ as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ˹recited.˺"  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «قِيلَ لِي، فَقُلْتُ۔» فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ۔  

I asked Ubai bin Kaʿb regarding the two Muwwidhat (Surats of taking refuge with Allah). He said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ about them, He said, 'These two Surats have been recited to me and I have recited them (and are present in the Qur'an).' So, we say as Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (i.e., they are part of the Qur'an." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4976)   

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] I asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b about the mu'awwidhatayn (surahs of seeking protection), so I said, "O Abu al-Mundhir, surely your brother Ibn Mas'ud recites them from the Mus'haf." He replied, "Indeed, I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, and he said, 'Say them just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.'"  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَحُكُّهُمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ قَالَ إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

"سَأَلْتُ أُبَىَّ بنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قال: قيلَ لِى، قُلْتُ: فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ".  

"عَنْ زِرٍّ: قُلْتُ لأُبَىٍّ: إِنَّ عَبْدَ الله بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ في الْمُعَوذَتَيْنِ، وَفى لَفْظٍ: يَحُكُّهُمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ فَقَال أُبَىٌ: سَأَلْنا عَنْهُمَا رَسُولَ الله ﷺ فَقَالَ: قِيَل لىِ: قُلْ، فَقُلتُ، فَأنَا أَقُولُ كما قَالَ، وفَي لَفْظٍ: فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ ".
