I observed prayer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with all of them), but I never heard any one of them reciting Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim loudly.

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ}

'Umar b. al-Khattab used to recite loudly these words: Subhanak Allahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuka [Glory to Thee,0 Allah, and Thine is the Praise, and Blessed is Thy Name. and Exalted is Thy Majesty. and there is no other object of worship beside Thee]. Qatada informed in writing that Anas b. Malik had narrated to him: I observed prayer behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar and 'Uthman. They started (loud recitation) with: AI-hamdu lillahi Rabb al-'Alamin [All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds] and did not recite Bismillah ir- Rahman-ir-Rahim (loudly) at the beginning of the recitation or at the end of it.

أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} لاَ يَذْكُرُونَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فِي أَوَّلِ قِرَاءَةٍ وَلاَ فِي آخِرِهَا

"The Prophet would open his Salat with (Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim)."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَفْتَتِحُ صَلاَتَهُ بِ (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ )

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ }

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , as well as behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they would not audibly recite 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' (Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem) in Surah Al-Fatiha."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they would begin by reciting "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin" (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds) [Surah Al-Fatiha: 2], without mentioning "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) [Surah Al-Fatiha: 1] in the beginning or at the end of the recitation.

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] لَا يَذْكُرُونَ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] فِي أَوَّلِ الْقِرَاءَةِ وَلَا فِي آخِرِهَا

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. They would not recite aloud the Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) in Al-Fatiha (Chapter 1)."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they did not initiate the recitation with 'Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) in Surah Al-Fatiha (Chapter 1). Shu'bah said: I asked Qatadah, 'Did you hear this from Anas?' He replied, 'Yes, we asked him about it.'"

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَقُلْتُ لِقَتَادَةَ أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ نَحْنُ سَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْهُ

[AI] One of us heard someone saying "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" and he says "Eehee Eehee, I have prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar, and I did not hear any of them saying "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

سَمِعَ أَحَدًا مِنَّا يَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَقُولُ إِهِي إِهِي صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Humayd at-Tawil that Anas ibn Malik said, "I stood behind Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and none of them used to recite 'In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate' when they began the prayer."

قُمْتُ وَرَاءَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكُلُّهُمْ كَانَ لاَ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to recognize that it was a Surah when Gabriel came to him and recited "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim"

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ «إِذَا جَاءَهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَرَأَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ عَلِمَ أَنَّهَا سُورَةٌ»

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا يَجْهَرْ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, did not utter aloud 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"

«وَكَانَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} »

قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وعُثمَان فلم أسمع أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ}

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet, ﷺ , he said, "Whoever does not show mercy to people, will not be shown mercy by Allah."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ»

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ»

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "Verily, Allah does not show mercy to those who do not show mercy to others."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَرْحَمُ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُ النَّاسَ»

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully. (Using translation from Bukhārī 6013)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ»

" That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who shows no mercy to the people, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, does not show mercy to him." (Using translation from Muslim 2319a)

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ»

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully. (Using translation from Bukhārī 6013)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet, ﷺ , he said, "Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ»

[AI] The Mahdi prayed with us and recited "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" out loud. I asked him about that and he said, "My father told me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' out loud."

صَلَّى بِنَا الْمَهْدِيُّ فَجَهَرَ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to say aloud "Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «كَانَ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] "When the Prophet ﷺ led the people in prayer, he would recite 'Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim'."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أَمَّ النَّاسَ قَرَأَ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

"The Prophet would open his Salat with (Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 245)

كَانَ يَفْتَتِحُ الصَّلَاةَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] He used to recite Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim aloud and also used to recite the Surah aloud.

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَجْهَرُ إِذَا قَرَأَ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَإِذَا قَرَأَ السُّورَةَ جَهَرَ بِهَا أَيْضًا

"أتانى جبريل فعلمنى الصلاةَ، فقرأ "بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ" فجَهَر بها".

" بِسم اللهِ الرحمنِ الرحيمِ مِفتاحُ كلِّ كِتَابِ".

"عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى قَالَ: صَلَّيْتُ خَلفَ عُمَرَ فَجَهَرَ بِبِسْمِ الله الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، وَكَان يَجْهرُ بِبِسْمِ الله الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ".

"عن عَلِىٍّ قالَ: كان رَسولُ الله ﷺ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْم الله الرَّحمنِ الرَّحيم في السُّورَتَيْن جَمِيعًا".

"عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَال: كَان النَّبِىُّ ﷺ يَجْهَرُ في الْمكْتُوبَاتِ بِبِسْمِ الله الرَّحمنِ الرَّحيم".

"صليتُ خلفَ النبىِّ ﷺ ، وأبِى بكرٍ، وعمرَ، وعثمانَ فلم يجهرْ ببِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: الْجَهْرُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} قراءَةُ الأعْرابِ".

"عَنْ عَمْرِو بْن دينَارٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاس، وَابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَا يَفْتَتِحَانِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} ".

" عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاس أنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ صَلَّى فَجَهرَ: {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} ".

"عَنْ نَافِعٍ: أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ لاَ يَدعُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، يَفْتَتِحُ القِرَاءَةَ بِبِسْم اللهِ الرَّحْمن الرَّحيمِ".
