I observed prayer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with all of them), but I never heard any one of them reciting Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim loudly.

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ}

'Umar b. al-Khattab used to recite loudly these words: Subhanak Allahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuka [Glory to Thee,0 Allah, and Thine is the Praise, and Blessed is Thy Name. and Exalted is Thy Majesty. and there is no other object of worship beside Thee]. Qatada informed in writing that Anas b. Malik had narrated to him: I observed prayer behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar and 'Uthman. They started (loud recitation) with: AI-hamdu lillahi Rabb al-'Alamin [All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds] and did not recite Bismillah ir- Rahman-ir-Rahim (loudly) at the beginning of the recitation or at the end of it.

أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} لاَ يَذْكُرُونَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فِي أَوَّلِ قِرَاءَةٍ وَلاَ فِي آخِرِهَا

"I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ and with Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, and they started with "All the praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of all that exists."

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ فَافْتَتَحُوا بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ }

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, and we did not hear him recite: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. And Abu Bakr and Umar led us in prayer and we did not hear it from them either."

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يُسْمِعْنَا قِرَاءَةَ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ } وَصَلَّى بِنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ فَلَمْ نَسْمَعْهَا مِنْهُمَا

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ }

"If Abdullah bin Mughaffal heard any one of us recite: 'In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful', he would say: 'I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr and behind Umar-may Allah be pleased with them both- and I did not hear any of them recite: 'In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

سَمِعَ أَحَدَنَا يَقْرَأُ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ } يَقُولُ صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَخَلْفَ عُمَرَ ؓ فَمَا سَمِعْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ قَرَأَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , as well as behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they would not audibly recite 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' (Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem) in Surah Al-Fatiha."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they would begin by reciting "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin" (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds) [Surah Al-Fatiha: 2], without mentioning "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) [Surah Al-Fatiha: 1] in the beginning or at the end of the recitation.

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] لَا يَذْكُرُونَ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] فِي أَوَّلِ الْقِرَاءَةِ وَلَا فِي آخِرِهَا

[AI] I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar, and they did not recite aloud "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) [Al-Fatihah 1].

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَمَعَ عُمَرَ فَلَمْ يَجْهَرُوا بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. They would not recite aloud the Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) in Al-Fatiha (Chapter 1)."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they did not initiate the recitation with 'Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) in Surah Al-Fatiha (Chapter 1). Shu'bah said: I asked Qatadah, 'Did you hear this from Anas?' He replied, 'Yes, we asked him about it.'"

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَقُلْتُ لِقَتَادَةَ أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ نَحْنُ سَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْهُ

[AI] One of us heard someone saying "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" and he says "Eehee Eehee, I have prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar, and I did not hear any of them saying "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

سَمِعَ أَحَدًا مِنَّا يَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَقُولُ إِهِي إِهِي صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Humayd at-Tawil that Anas ibn Malik said, "I stood behind Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and none of them used to recite 'In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate' when they began the prayer."

قُمْتُ وَرَاءَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكُلُّهُمْ كَانَ لاَ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ

[AI] "This is our prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them. When Umar was martyred, Uthman took charge of it, may Allah be pleased with him."

«هَذِهِ صَلَاتُنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا فَلَمَّا قُتِلَ عُمَرُ أَسْفَرَ بِهَا عُثْمَانُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ»

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا يَجْهَرْ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, did not utter aloud 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"

«وَكَانَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} »

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) did not recite 'Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim' loudly, but they used to recite 'Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin' aloud."

«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} وَكَانُوا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}»

قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وعُثمَان فلم أسمع أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ}

[AI] The translation of the passage is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to start with 'Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), as did Abu Bakr and Umar."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُسِرُّ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to say aloud "Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «كَانَ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, and we did not hear him recite: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. And Abu Bakr and Umar led us in prayer and we did not hear it from them either." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 906)

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

سَمِعَ أَحَدًا يَقْرَأُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَقُولُ «صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَخَلْفَ عُمَرَ فَمَا سَمِعْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ قَرَأَ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] I prayed behind Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he recited aloud "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَجَهَرَ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[AI] "Behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, I did not hear any of them say: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"

خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[AI] Behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar, I never heard any of them recite "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" before beginning their recitation.

خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَمَا سَمِعْتُ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] Behind the Prophet ﷺ , and Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, I have never seen anyone of them do it.

خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَهُ قَطُّ

"عَنْ أبى وائِلٍ قال: كَانَ عُمَرُ وَعَلِىٌّ لَا يَجْهَرَانِ بِبِسْمِ الله االرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، وَلَا بِالتَّعَوُّذِ، وَلَا بِآمينَ".

"عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى قَالَ: صَلَّيْتُ خَلفَ عُمَرَ فَجَهَرَ بِبِسْمِ الله الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، وَكَان يَجْهرُ بِبِسْمِ الله الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ".

" عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاس أنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ صَلَّى فَجَهرَ: {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} ".
