"The lives of the believers are equal in value, and they are one against others, and they hasten to support the asylum granted by the least of them. But no believer may be killed in return for a disbeliever, nor one with a covenant while his covenant is in effect."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ لاَ يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلاَ ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ

"Ali said: 'The Messenger of Allah did not tell me anything that he did not tell the people, except what is in a sheet in the sheath of my word.' They did not leave him alone until he brought out the sheet, and in it (were the words): 'The lives of the believers are equal in value, and they hasten to support the asylum granted by the least of them, and they are one against others. But no believer may be killed in return for a disbeliever, nor one with a covenant while his covenant is in effect."

عَلِيٌّ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِشَىْءٍ دُونَ النَّاسِ إِلاَّ فِي صَحِيفَةٍ فِي قِرَابِ سَيْفِي فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا بِهِ حَتَّى أَخْرَجَ الصَّحِيفَةَ فَإِذَا فِيهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ لاَ يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلاَ ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Muslims are equal in respect of blood. The lowest of them is entitled to give protection on behalf of them, and the one residing far away may give protection on behalf of them. They are like one hand over against all those who are outside the community. Those who have quick mounts should return to those who have slow mounts, and those who got out along with a detachment (should return) to those who are stationed. A believer shall not be killed for an unbeliever, nor a confederate within the term of confederation with him. Ibn Ishaq did not mention retaliation and equality in respect of blood.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمُسْلِمُونَ تَتَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَيُجِيرُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَقْصَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ يَرُدُّ مُشِدُّهُمْ عَلَى مُضْعِفِهِمْ وَمُتَسَرِّعُهُمْ عَلَى قَاعِدِهِمْ لاَ يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلاَ ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَوَدَ وَالتَّكَافُؤَ

“The blood of every Muslims is equal, they are one hand against others. The asylum offered by the lowest of them in status applies to them (all), and the return is granted to the farthest of them.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ تَتَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَيُرَدُّ عَلَى أَقْصَاهُمْ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed them while leaning his back against the Kaaba. He said, "There is no prayer after Asr until the sun sets, and there is no prayer after Fajr until the sun rises. The believers are equal in their blood, and those with the lowest status among them are in their protection. They are united against anyone except themselves. Beware, a believer should not be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever, nor should a person with a treaty be harmed in his treaty."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَطَبَهُمْ وَهُوَ مُسْنِدٌ ظَهْرَهُ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لَا صَلَاةَ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ وَلَا صَلَاةَ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ أَلَا لَا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلَا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ

[Machine] "I entered along with Al-Ishtr (Abu Bakr) to Ali ibn Abi Talib on the day of the Camel (battle). I asked him, 'Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ make a specific covenant with you, separate from the public?' He replied, 'No, he only made this covenant,' and he pulled out a piece of paper from his sheath, on which it was written, 'The believers are united in their blood, and their defense is sought by the weakest among them. They have a hand against anyone other than them; a believer should not be killed in retaliation for an unbeliever or someone who has a covenant with him.'"

دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَالْأَشْتَرُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ عَهِدَ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَهْدًا دُونَ الْعَامَّةِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا هَذَا وَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ قِرَابِ سَيْفِهِ فَإِذَا فِيهَا «الْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَتَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَيَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ لَا يُقْتَلْ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلَا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Muslims protect each other, their blood is equal, and a believer is not killed for an unbeliever, nor is a person with a covenant killed within their covenant."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْمُسْلِمُونَ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ تَتَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ لَا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلَا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ»

ʿThe believers are equal in respect of blood and they are one against their enemies; protection given even by the least among them is to be honoured, but no believer is to be killed (in retaliation) for a disbeliever and no one who has a covenant is to be killed during the covenant.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 991)

[Machine] I entered with Ashtar to Ali ibn Abi Talib on the Day of the Camel, and I said, "Did the Messenger of Allah make a covenant with you separate from the general one?" He said, "No, except for this." Then he pulled out his sword from its sheath, and there were the believers on it, [promising that] their blood would be rewarded, their rights protected, and they would have authority over those other than them. A believer should not be killed by a disbeliever, nor should someone with a covenant be killed during his covenant.

دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَالْأَشْتَرُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ فَقُلْتُ هَلْ عَهِدَ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَهْدًا دُونَ الْعَامَّةِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا هَذَا وَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ قِرَابِ سَيْفِهِ فَإِذَا فِيهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ يَسْعَى بِذِمَّتِهِمْ أَدْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِوَاهُمْ لَا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ وَلَا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ

"لا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بِكَافِرٍ، وَلا ذُو عَهْدٍ فِي عَهْدِهِ، والْمُسْلِمُونَ يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِواهُمْ، تَتكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهُمْ".

"المسلمون يدٌ على مَنْ سواهم تتكافأُ دماؤُهم ويسعى بذمتهم أَدْنَاهُم، ولا يُقْتَلُ مسلمٌ بكافِر ولَا ذُو عَهْدٍ في عَهْدِهِ".

"المسلمون تتكافأُ دماؤهم وهم يَدٌ عَلَى مَنْ سِواهُم يَسْعَى بِذمَّتِهمْ أَدَناهُم، وَيرُدُّ عليهم أَقْصاهُم".

"المسلمون تتكافأُ دِماؤهم، ويسعى بذمتهم أَدناهُم، ويُجيرُ عليهم أقصاهم، وهم يدٌ على من سواهم، يرد مُشِدهم عَلَى مُضْعفهم، ومُسْرِعهم على قاعدِهِم، لا يُقْتَلُ مُؤمِنٌ بكافِرٍ، ولا ذُو عهد في عَهْدِهِ".

"المؤمِنون تَكَافَأُ دِمَاؤُهم، وهم يَدٌ على مَنْ سِواهم، ويَسْعى بذِمَّتِهم أدْنَاهُم، أَلا لا يُقْتَلُ مُؤْمِنٌ بكافرٍ، ولا ذو عَهْدِ في عَهْدِهِ، مَنْ أَحْدَثَ حَدثًا فَعَلَى نَفْسِهِ، وَمنْ أحْدَثَ حَدثًا أو آوَى مُحْدِثًا فعَلَيهِ لَعْنةُ اللهِ والمَلائِكَةِ والنَّاسِ أَجَمَعِينَ" .
