When they gathered to wash him, Aus ibn Khawli al-Ansari from behind the door called out. Then one of the Banu Awf ibn al-Khazraj, who was a Badri companion, said to Ali, "O Ali, I bear witness that we were blessed by the Messenger of Allah. Enter." So he entered and attended the washing of the Messenger of Allah and did not take part in washing him. He supported him against his chest, and his shirt was on him. Abbas, al-Fadl, and Qutham would turn him with Ali, and Usama ibn Zaid and Salih would pour water on him. The Messenger of Allah was not seen in any way that could be seen from a deceased person, and he would say, "By my father and mother, how pure you are, alive and dead!" When they finished washing the Messenger of Allah, who was washed with water and lotus leaves, they dried him and performed the customary actions done for the dead. Then he was wrapped in three garments: two white robes and a Burda Habra. Abbas called two men and said to them, "One of you should go to Abu Ubaida ibn al-Jarrah," who used to provide for the people of Mecca, "and the other should go to Abu Talha ibn Sahl al-Ansari," who used to provide for the people of Medina. Abbas said to them when Allah set them free, "May Allah grant your release to the sake of His Messenger." So they went but did not find the companion of Abu Ubaida, Abu Ubaida himself, and they found the companion of Abu Talha, Abu Talha himself. Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: I said to Abdullah ibn Abbas: AbulAbbas, I am surprised to see the difference of opinion amongst the companions of the Apostle ﷺ about the wearing of ihram by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he made it obligatory. He replied: I am aware of it more than the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed only one hajj. Hence the people differed among themselves. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out (from Medina) with the intention of performing hajj. When he offered two rak'ahs of prayer in the mosque at Dhul-Hulayfah, he made it obligatory by wearing it. At the same meeting, he raised his voice in the talbiyah for hajj, when he finished his two rak'ahs. Some people heard it and I retained it from him. He then rode (on the she-camel), and when it (the she-camel) stood up, with him on its back, he raised his voice in the talbiyah and some people heard it at that moment. This is because the people were coming in groups, so they heard him raising his voice calling the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back, and they thought that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had raised his voice in the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded further; when he ascended the height of al-Bayda' he raised his voice in the talbiyah. Some people heard it at that moment. They thought that he had raised his voice in the talbiyah when he ascended the height of al-Bayda'. I swear by Allah, he raised his voice in the talbiyah at the place where he prayed, and he raised his voice in the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back, and he raised his voice in the talbiyah when he ascended the height of al-Bayda'. Sa'id (ibn Jubayr) said; He who follows the view of Ibn Abbas raises his voice in talbiyah (and ihram) at the place of is prayer after he finishes two rak'ahs of his prayer. He commanded that the meat, fat, and skin be distributed among the people and not to give anything to the butcher. He also ordered that a piece of meat from each camel be taken and put in one pot, so they can eat from its meat and taste its broth. And so it was done.

And can a pilgrim, who has brought the Hadi with him, circumambulate the Kaaba and end up performing both Umrah and Hajj? People do not say that this is possible." He said, "Woe unto you! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went forth with his companions, and they mentioned only Hajj. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded those who did not bring the Hadi with them to circumambulate the Kaaba and perform Umrah. Thus, one of them said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is indeed Hajj.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'No, it is not Hajj; rather, it is only Umrah.'"

At that time Abu Sufyan bin Harb was in Sham with some men from Quraish who had come (to Sham) as merchants during the truce that had been concluded between Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and the infidels of Quraish. Abu Sufyan said, Caesar's messenger found us somewhere in Sham so he took me and my companions to Ilya and we were admitted into Ceasar's court to find him sitting in his royal court wearing a crown and surrounded by the senior dignitaries of the Byzantine. He said to his translator. 'Ask them who amongst them is a close relation to the man who claims to be a prophet." Abu Sufyan added, "I replied, 'I am the nearest relative to him.' He asked, 'What degree of relationship do you have with him?' I replied, 'He is my cousin,' and there was none of Bani Abu Manaf in the caravan except myself. Caesar said, 'Let him come nearer.' He then ordered that my companions stand behind me near my shoulder and said to his translator, 'Tell his companions that I am going to ask this man about the man who claims to be a prophet. If he tells a lie, they should contradict him immediately." Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah! Had it not been shameful that my companions label me a liar, I would not have spoken the truth about him when he asked me. But I considered it shameful to be called a liar by my companions. So I told the truth. He then said to his translator, 'Ask him what kind of family does he belong to.' I replied, 'He belongs to a noble family amongst us.' He said, 'Have anybody else amongst you ever claimed the same before him? 'I replied, 'No.' He said, 'Had you ever blamed him for telling lies before he claimed what he claimed? ' I replied, 'No.' He said, 'Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?' I replied, 'No.' He said, "Do the noble or the poor follow him?' I replied, 'It is the poor who follow him.' He said, 'Are they increasing or decreasing (day by day)?' I replied,' They are increasing.' He said, 'Does anybody amongst those who embrace his (the Prophet's) Religion become displeased and then discard his Religion?'. I replied, 'No. ' He said, 'Does he break his promises? I replied, 'No, but we are now at truce with him and we are afraid that he may betray us." Abu Sufyan added, "Other than the last sentence, I could not say anything against him. Caesar then asked, 'Have you ever had a war with him?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'What was the outcome of your battles with him?' I replied, 'The result was unstable; sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.' He said, 'What does he order you to do?' I said, 'He tells us to worship Allah alone, and not to worship others along with Him, and to leave all that our fore-fathers used to worship. He orders us to pray, give in charity, be chaste, keep promises and return what is entrusted to us.' When I had said that, Caesar said to his translator, 'Say to him: I ask you about his lineage and your reply was that he belonged to a noble family. In fact, all the apostles came from the noblest lineage of their nations. Then I questioned you whether anybody else amongst you had claimed such a thing, and your reply was in the negative. If the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man was following a claim that had been said before him. When I asked you whether he was ever blamed for telling lies, your reply was in the negative, so I took it for granted that a person who did not tell a lie about (others) the people could never tell a lie about Allah. Then I asked you whether any of his ancestors was a king. Your reply was in the negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom. When I asked you whether the rich or the poor people followed him, you replied that it was the poor who followed him. In fact, such are the followers of the apostles. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing. In fact, this is the result of true faith till it is complete (in all respects). I asked you whether there was anybody who, after embracing his religion, became displeased and discarded his religion; your reply was in the negative. In fact, this is the sign of true faith, for when its cheerfulness enters and mixes in the hearts completely, nobody will be displeased with it. I asked you whether he had ever broken his promise. You replied in the negative. And such are the apostles; they never break their promises. When I asked you whether you fought with him and he fought with you, you replied that he did, and that sometimes he was victorious and sometimes you. Indeed, such are the apostles; they are put to trials and the final victory is always theirs. Then I asked you what he ordered you. You replied that he ordered you to worship Allah alone and not to worship others along with Him, to leave all that your fore-fathers used to worship, to offer prayers, to speak the truth, to be chaste, to keep promises, and to return what is entrusted to you. These are really the qualities of a prophet who, I knew (from the previous Scriptures) would appear, but I did not know that he would be from amongst you. If what you say should be true, he will very soon occupy the earth under my feet, and if I knew that I would reach him definitely, I would go immediately to meet Him; and were I with him, then I would certainly wash his feet.' " Abu Sufyan added, "Caesar then asked for the letter of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and it was read. Its contents were: "In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful (This letter is) from Muhammad, the slave of Allah, and His Apostle, to Heraculius, the Ruler of the Byzantine. Peace be upon the followers of guidance. Now then, I invite you to Islam (i.e. surrender to Allah), embrace Islam and you will be safe; embrace Islam and Allah will bestow on you a double reward. But if you reject this invitation of Islam, you shall be responsible for misguiding the tillers (i.e. your nation). O people of the Scriptures! Come to a word common to you and us and you, that we worship. None but Allah, and that we associate nothing in worship with Him; and that none of us shall take others as Lords besides Allah. Then if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are (they who have surrendered (unto Him)..(3.64) Abu Sufyan added, "When Heraclius had finished his speech, there was a great hue and cry caused by the Byzantine Royalties surrounding him, and there was so much noise that I did not understand what they said. So, we were turned out of the court. When I went out with my companions and we were alone, I said to them, 'Verily, Ibn Abi Kabsha's (i.e. the Prophet's) affair has gained power. This is the King of Bani Al-Asfar fearing him." Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah, I remained low and was sure that his religion would be victorious till Allah converted me to Islam, though I disliked it." [Machine] About the dream of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he mentioned? Ibn Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "While I was sleeping, I saw that two golden bracelets were placed in my hands, so I disliked them and threw them, and it was announced to me to blow on them, so I blew on them and they flew away. Then I interpreted them as two liars who will emerge." Ubaidullah said, "One of them is Al-Ansi, who will be killed by Firuz in Yemen, and the other is Musaylimah."

[Machine] He informed him that Ali ibn Abi Talib came out from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness in which he passed away. The people said, "O Abu Hassan, how is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing?" He replied, "He is doing well, thanks to Allah." Ibn Abbas said, "Then Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib took his hand and said, 'Don't you see? By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will pass away in this illness. I know the signs of the descendants of Abdul-Muttalib at death. So let's go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about this matter. If he confirms it, we will know. And if he denies it, he will give us advice." Ali said, "By Allah, if we ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he prevents us from it, the people will never give it to us. So I swear by Allah, I will never ask him."

[Machine] I entered the house of Ibn Abbas, the husband of the Prophet ﷺ, on Friday morning. He said that Maimuna had advised him to do so, and whenever he prayed Friday prayer, a place was spread for him, and he would go to it and sit for the people. A man asked him about performing ablution with that part of the food that had been touched by fire. Ibn Abbas raised his hands to his eyes, and his vision was restricted, and he said, "The sight of my eyes beheld the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution for the Dhuhr prayer in part of his room. Then he called Bilal for the prayer, and he stood up and went outside. When he stood at the door of the room, he was given a gift of bread and meat, which some of his companions had sent to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned with those who were with him, and the food was placed in the room for them. The Prophet ﷺ ate, and they ate with him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up with those who were with him for prayer, and none of those who were with him touched any water." Ibn Abbas said, "This is the last portion of the matter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I remembered."

[Machine] The sons of Saad ibn Bakr sent Dhimam ibn Tha'alabah as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He arrived and tied his camel at the gate of the mosque, then he entered the mosque where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his companions. Dhimam, who was a strong man with thick hair and big calves, approached the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Which one of you is the son of Abdul-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I am the son of Abdul-Muttalib." Dhimam asked, "Are you Muhammad?" The Prophet ﷺ answered, "Yes." Dhimam said, "I have a question and I am persistent in seeking the answer. Do you find in yourself what I am about to ask?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I do not find it in myself, so ask me what you want." Dhimam said, "I ask you by Allah, your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, and the Lord of those who will come after you, did Allah send you to us as a Messenger?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, I swear by Allah." Dhimam continued, "I ask you by Allah, your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, and the Lord of those who will come after you, did Allah command you to command us to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, and to abandon the idols that our ancestors used to worship along with Him?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, I swear by Allah." Dhimam then asked, "I ask you by Allah, your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, and the Lord of those who will come after you, did Allah command you to establish the five daily prayers?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes, I swear by Allah." Then Dhimam mentioned the rest of the obligations of Islam one by one, and the Prophet ﷺ affirmed each one. Dhimam then said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I will fulfill these obligations and avoid what you have prohibited me from. I will neither increase nor decrease." Then he turned back to his camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Dhimal with thick hair and big calves speaks the truth, he will enter Paradise." Dhimam went to his people and they gathered around him. The first thing he said to them was, "How evil are Al-Lat and Al-Uzza!" They replied, "What is wrong, Dhimal? Beware of leprosy and madness." Dhimal said, "Woe to you! By Allah, they neither harm nor benefit. Surely, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has sent a Messenger and revealed a book to him that will rescue you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and He has no partner, and Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded and prohibited. By Allah, there is no man or woman present on this day except as a Muslim." Ibn Abbas said, "We have not heard of a delegate from any people who was better than Dhimam ibn Tha'alabah."

One group stood, although they were all behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and one group prostrated with him, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and they all stood with him.

[Machine] He used to say that the Messenger of Allahﷺ would recite in his two Rak'ahs before Fajr the opening chapter of the Quran, Al-Fatiha, and the two verses from the conclusion of Al-Baqarah in the first Rak'ah, and in the second Rak'ah he would recite the opening chapter of the Quran and the verse from Al-Imran "Say, 'O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you'" [Al-Imran 3:64] until completing the verse.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "How did you divorce her?" He said, "I divorced her three times." He said, "And did you utter the divorce in one sitting?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Verily, that counts as one. So if you wish, take her back." He said, "So he took her back." Ibn Abbas used to say that divorce is only valid during a state of purity.
