ahmad:2350 – ʿAbīdah > Manṣūr > Mujāhid > Ṭāwus > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] The Messenger of Allahﷺ left the city of Madinah intending to go to Makkah. He fasted until he reached Usfan. Then, he called for a bowl and placed it on his hand until people looked at him. After that, he broke his fast. Ibn Abbas used to say, "Whoever wants to fast may do so, and whoever wants to break their fast may do so."  

أحمد:٢٣٥٠ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ يُرِيدُ مَكَّةَ فَصَامَ حَتَّى أَتَى عُسْفَانَ قَالَ فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى يَدِهِ حَتَّى نَظَرَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفْطَرَ قَالَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ

The Prophet ﷺ left Medina for Mecca till he reached 'Usfan, He then called for a vessel (of water). It was raised to his mouth to show it to the people, and that was in Ramadan. Ibn 'Abbas used to say: The Prophet ﷺ fasted and he broke his fast. He who likes may fast and he who likes may break.  

أبو داود:٢٤٠٤ – حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عُسْفَانَ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى فِيهِ لِيُرِيَهُ النَّاسَ وَذَلِكَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ قَدْ صَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَفْطَرَ فَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ  

ahmad:3162 – Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar And Ḥajjāj > Shuʿbah > Manṣūr > Mujāhid > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out of the city during Ramadan when he opened Mecca and fasted until he reached Usfan. Then he asked for a cup of water or a container, drank from it, and Ibn Abbas used to say, "Whoever wants to fast, let him fast, and whoever wants to break his fast can do so."
