[Machine] We were in a gathering at the house of Umar ibn Dhar one night during the month of Ramadan. Ibn Dhar began speaking and mentioned the deceased and what happens to them during their last moments, as well as the angels of mercy and punishment who are present. Suddenly, a young man jumped up and continued to scream and tremble until he died. May Allah have mercy on him.  

كُنَّا فِي مَجْلِسِ عُمَرَ بْنِ ذَرٍّ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَتَكَلَّمَ ابْنُ ذَرٍّ فَذَكَرَ الْمَيِّتَ إِذَا احْتُضِرَ وَمَنْ يَحْضُرُهُ مِنْ مَلَائِكَةِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَالْعَذَابِ فَوَثَبَ شَابٌّ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَصْرُخْ وَيَضْطَرِبْ حَتَّى مَاتَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ  

[Machine] "Oh, my son, the hired mourner is not like the sincere mourner."  

«يَا بُنَيَّ لَيْسَ النَّائِحَةُ الْمُسْتَأْجَرَةُ كَالنَّائِحَةِ الثَّكْلَى»  

[Machine] I heard Ibrahim Al-Taimi saying, "I have not presented my words to my actions except out of fear that I may be contradicting myself."  

سَمِعْتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيَّ يَقُولُ «مَا عَرَضْتُ قَوْلِي [289] عَلَى عَمَلِي إِلَّا خِفْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مُكَذِّبًا»  

[Machine] Ibrahim Al-Taymi used to be mentioned in the house of Abu Wail, so Abu Wail would become agitated like the startled bird.  

كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ التَّيْمِيُّ يُذْكَرُ فِي مَنْزِلِ أَبِي وَائِلٍ فَكَانَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ يَنْتَفِضُ انْتِفَاضَ الطَّيْرِ  

[Machine] "To be Abu Wael from them."  

أَنْ يَكُونَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ مِنْهُمْ»  

[Machine] "For me to have a son who fights in the cause of Allah is dearer to me than a hundred thousand."  

«لَأَنْ يَكُونَ لِي وَلَدٌ يُقَاتِلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ مِائَةِ أَلْفٍ»  

[Machine] "That Abu Wail had a special stick, and he and his horse would be in it. When he went on a raid, he would break it and give it away as charity, and when he returned, he would rebuild it."  

أَنَّ أَبَا وَائِلٍ كَانَ لَهُ خُصُّ قَصَبٍ فَكَانَ يَكُونُ فِيهِ هُوَ وَفَرَسُهُ فَإِذَا غَزَا نَقَضَهُ وَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ فَإِذَا رَجَعَ أَنْشَأَ بِنَاءَهُ  

[Machine] "The proximity in actions."  

«الْقُرْبَةُ فِي الْأَعْمَالِ»  

[Machine] My brother said to me, "Oh Sulaiman, by Allah, if we obeyed Allah, He would never disobey us."  

قَالَ لِي شَقِيقٌ «يَا سُلَيْمَانُ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَطَعْنَا اللَّهَ ﷻ مَا عَصَانَا»  

[Machine] He used to, when he would come out of the last part of the night, place his forehead on the ground and say, "Oh Allah, if You should cause me to die, then cause me to die in a state of Islam, and if You should give me life, then cause me to live in a state of Islam, and if You should cause me to live longer, then cause me to live as a Muslim and never let me die except as a Muslim."  

أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنَ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَضْعَ جَبْهَتَهُ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ تَعْفُ عَنِّي تَعْفُ عَنِّي طَوْلًا مِنْكَ وَإِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي تُعَذِّبْنِي غَيْرَ ظَالِمٍ وَلَا مَسْبُوقٍ»  

[Machine] I saw Ibrahim Al-Taimi telling a story while Abu Wael was with him, and he was crying.  

رَأَيْتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيَّ يَقُصُّ وَعِنْدَهُ أَبُو وَائِلٍ وَهُوَ يَبْكِي  

[Machine] A man said to Abu Wa'il, "Indeed, there are people who say that Allah admits the believers into the Fire." He said, "By your life, it has a gathering place other than the believers."  

قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِأَبِي وَائِلٍ إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يُدْخِلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ النَّارَ قَالَ لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّ لَهَا مَحْشَرًا غَيْرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  

[Machine] That there were people sitting in the mosque after sunset and among them was a man who was saying "Exalt God in such and such a way, glorify God in such and such a way, and praise God in such and such a way." Abdallah asked, "Do they say this?" He replied, "Yes." Abdallah said, "When you see them doing that, come and inform me." So he went to them while he had a stick with him, and he sat down. When he heard what they were saying, he stood up, and he was a strong man. He said, "I am Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. By the One other than whom there is no deity, have you come with a dark innovation? Have you surpassed the Companions of Muhammad in knowledge?" Mu'adh said, "By Allah, we have not come with a dark innovation, nor have we surpassed the Companions of Muhammad in knowledge." Amr ibn Uthbah said, "O Abu Abdullah, we seek forgiveness from Allah." He said, "You should follow the straight path, for by Allah, if you do so, you will definitely be ahead. And if you take the right and left paths, you will go far astray."  

أَنَّ قَوْمًا يَجْلِسُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَفِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ يَقُولُ كَبِّرُوا لِلَّهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا وسَبِّحُوا لِلَّهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَاحْمَدُوا لِلَّهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَيَقُولُونَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ فَأْتِنِي فَأَخْبِرْنِي بِمَجْلِسِهِمْ فَأَتَاهُمْ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْنُسٌ فَجَلَسَ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ مَا يَقُولُونَ قَامَ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا حَدِيدًا [290] فَقَالَ أَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ لَقَدْ جِئْتُمْ بِبِدْعَةٍ ظَلْمَاءَ أَوَلَقَدْ فَضُلْتُمْ أَصْحَابَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ عِلْمًا؟ فَقَالَ مِعْضَدٌ وَاللَّهِ مَا جِئْنَا بِبِدْعَةٍ ظَلْمَاءَ وَلَا فَضُلْنَا أَصْحَابَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ عِلْمًا فَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ عُتْبَةَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ نَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ قَالَ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِالطَّرِيقِ فَالْزَمُوهُ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتُمْ لَقَدْ سَبَقْتُمْ سَبْقًا بَعِيدًا وَإِنْ أَخَذْتُمْ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا لَتَضِلُّوا ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا»  

[Machine] Abu Wael used to say to his slave girl, "O Barakah, if my son Yahya comes to you with something, do not accept it. But if my companions come to you with something, take it. And Yahya, his son, was a judge over the kunnasah."  

كَانَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ يَقُولُ لِجَارِيَتِهِ «يَا بَرَكَةُ إِذَا جَاءَكِ يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَهُ بِشَيْءٍ فَلَا تَقْبَلِيهِ وَإِذَا جَاءَكِ أَصْحَابِي بِشَيْءٍ فَخُذِيهِ وَكَانَ يَحْيَى ابْنُهُ قَاضِيًا عَلَى الْكُنَاسَةِ»  

[Machine] Abu Wael used to pray in his house with a soft and low voice, even if he was offered the world to pray differently, and no one would have known what he did.  

كَانَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ إِذَا صَلَّى فِي بَيْتِهِ يَنْشُجُ نَشْجًا وَلَوْ جُعِلَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى أَنْ يَفْعَلَهُ وَأَحَدٌ يَرَاهُ مَا فَعَلَهُ  

[Machine] I heard a brother saying, "O Allah, if You have written us among the miserable before You, then erase us and write us as happy. And if You have written us as happy, then make us firm, for You eliminate what You will and establish, and the Mother of the Book is with You."  

سَمِعْتُ شَقِيقًا يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ كَتَبْتَنَا عِنْدَكَ مِنَ الْأَشْقِيَاءِ فَامْحُنَا واكْتُبْنَا سُعَدَاءَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ كَتَبْتَنَا سُعَدَاءَ فَاثبِتْنَا فَإِنَّكَ تَمْحُو مَا تَشَاءُ وَتُثْبِتُ وَعِنْدَكَ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ»  

[Machine] As if he was a fledgling and his wife was calling him, my family, we sacrifice for you, what shall we feed you? What shall we give you to drink? He responded to her with a faint voice, "The wild camel has fled and the raid has been lengthy, and I do not wish for Allah to deprive me of even a small amount of it."  

كَأَنَّهُ فَرْخٌ وَامْرَأَتُهُ تُنَادِيهِ أَهْلِي فِدَاؤُكَ مَا نُطْعِمُكَ؟ مَا نَسْقِيكَ؟ قَالَ فَأَجَابَهَا بِصَوْتٍ يَعْنِي خَفِيٍّ «دَبِرَتِ الْحَرَاقِفُ وطَالَتِ الضِّجْعَةُ وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ نَقَصَنِي مِنْهُ قُلَامَةَ ظُفْرٍ»  

[Machine] It seemed like he was the weight of a wall.  

فَكَأَنَّهُ جِذْمُ حَائِطٍ  

[Machine] To be buried in the cemetery of the poor of his people.  

أَنْ يُدْفَنَ فِي مَقْبَرَةِ فُقَرَاءِ قَوْمِهِ  

[Machine] "To drink the beverage in my house after the Quran is recited in it every three times."  

أَنْ يُشْرَبَ فِي بَيْتِي الشَّرَابُ بَعْدَ إِذِ الْقُرْآنُ يُتْلَى فِيهِ فِي كُلِّ ثَلَاثٍ»  

[Machine] "He bought slaves for four thousand from Basra, and they built him a house. Then he sold them for a profit of four thousand. I said to him, 'Father, if you were to return to Basra and buy similar ones, you would have made a profit from them.' He said, 'O son, why do you say this to me? By Allah, I did not rejoice when I acquired them, nor did I ever think of returning and encountering a similar situation.'"  

أَنَّهُ اشْتَرَى رَقِيقًا بِأَرْبَعَةِ آلَافٍ مِنَ الْبَصْرَةِ فَبَنَوْا لَهُ دَارَهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ بَاعَهُمْ بِرِبْحِ أَرْبَعَةِ آلَافٍ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا أَبَتِ لَوْ عُدْتَ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ فَاشْتَرَيْتَ مِثْلَ هَؤُلَاءِ فَرَبِحْتَ فِيهِمْ قَالَ «يَا بُنَيَّ لِمَ تَقُولُ لِي هَذَا؟ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا فَرِحْتُ بِهَا حِينَ أَصَبْتُهَا وَلَا حَدَّثْتُ نَفْسِي أَنْ أَعُودَ فَأُصِيبَ مِثْلَهَا»  

[Machine] "To be among a people whom I teach."  

أَنْ أَكُونَ فِي قَوْمٍ أُعَلِّمُهُمْ»  

[Machine] And he said, "They were called the family of Al-Aswad from the people of paradise."  

وَقَالَ كَانُوا يُسَمُّونَ آلَ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ  

[Machine] If you are concerned about the Hereafter, then stay for a while. And if you are occupied with worldly matters, then deal with it. And if you intend to do something good, do not delay it. And when Satan comes to you while you are praying, saying that you are just having a delusion, then prolong it.  

إِذَا كُنْتَ فِي أَمْرِ الْآخِرَةِ فَتَمَكَّثْ وَإِذَا كُنْتَ فِي أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا فَتَوَخَّ وَإِذَا هَمَمْتَ بِخَيْرٍ فَلَا تُؤَخِّرْهُ وَإِذَا أَتَاكَ الشَّيْطَانُ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ تُرَائِي فَزِدْهَا طُولًا  

[Machine] Dharr was older than Abu Wail, and whenever they sat together, Abu Wail would not speak with Dharr. I would hear Abu Wail, when he was alone in his house, saying in his prostration, "Lord, forgive me, Lord, have mercy on me, for if you forgive me, you forgive me abundantly from Your side, and if You punish me, You punish me without injustice or haste." Then he would weep, with intense weeping that I have never seen anyone else do.  

كَانَ ذَرٌّ أَكْبَرَ مِنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ فَكَانَا إِذَا جَلَسَا جَمِيعًا لَمْ يُحَدِّثْ أَبُو وَائِلٍ مَعَ ذَرٍّ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ أَبَا وَائِلٍ وَهُوَ خَالٍ فِي بَيْتِهِ يَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِهِ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي رَبِّ اعْفُ عَنِّي فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ تَعْفُ عَنِّي تَعْفُ عَنِّي طَوْلًا مِنْ قِبَلِكَ وَإِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي تُعَذِّبْنِي غَيْرَ ظَالِمٍ وَلَا مَسْبُوقٍ ثُمَّ يَنْشُجُ كَأَشَدِّ نَشِيجِ ثَكْلَى سَمِعْتُهَا وَلَوْ أُعْطِيَ عَلَى أَنْ يَرَاهُ أَحَدٌ يَبْكِي أَيْ مَا فَعَلَ  

[Machine] Indeed, the people of the house are making on their table a lawful food for the strangers of the house.  

«إِنَّ أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ يَصْنَعُونَ عَلَى مَائِدَتِهِمْ رَغِيفًا حَلَالًا لّأّهْلُ بَيْتٍ غُرَبَاءُ»  

[Machine] Abdulrahman ibn al-Aswad came to us in Medina. He was a disabled man, but he stood and prayed all night until his leg became empty, standing on one leg. He prayed Isha and Fajr with us with only one ablution.  

قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ الْمَدِينَةَ وَهُوَ مُعْتَلُّ الرِّجْلِ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي اللَّيْلَ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ شَاغِرًا بِرِجْلِهِ قَائِمًا عَلَى رِجْلٍ وَصَلَّى بِنَا الْعِشَاءَ وَالْفَجْرَ بِوُضُوءٍ وَاحِدٍ  

[Machine] That Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Aswad used to pray the obligatory prayers in the mosque and then enter his house to pray all the daytime prayers in it.  

أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ كَانَ يُصَلِّي الْمَكْتُوبَةَ فِي [292] الْمَسْجِدِ وَيَدْخُلُ بَيْتَهُ فَيُصَلِّي فِيهِ النَّهَارَ أَجْمَعَ  

[Machine] I saw Abdul Rahman bin Al-Aswad dipping his feet in the water while he was fasting.  

«رَأَيْتَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ يَنْقَعُ رِجْلَيْهِ فِي الْمَاءِ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ»  

[Machine] "Whoever recites Surah Al-Baqarah in one night, a crown will be placed on their head in Jannah (Paradise)."  

«مَنْ قَرَأَ الْبَقَرَةَ فِي لَيْلَةٍ تُوِّجَ تَاجًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ»  

[Machine] "Make it easy for yourselves to meet your Lord."  

«تَيَسَّرُوا لِلِقَاءِ رَبِّكُمْ»  

[Machine] "Whoever prays four units after 'Isha (night prayer), will be like those units in the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr). I asked, 'From whom did you hear this?' He replied, 'If you do this, then they will be consistent, otherwise they will be strays.'"  

مَنْ صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ كُنَّ كَمِثْلِهِنَّ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ قُلْتُ مِمَّنْ سَمِعْتَهُ؟ قَالَ إِنْ كُنَّ كَذَا وَإِلَّا فَهُنَّ صَوَالِحُ  

[Machine] Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Aswad, Uqbah, the freed slave of Adam ibn Na'imah Al-Hadrami, and Sa'id Abu Hashim were performing Hajj from Kufa. They would then fast and not break their fast until they returned.  

كَانَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ وَعُقْبَةُ مَوْلَى آدَمَ بْنِ نَاعِمَةَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ وَسَعِيدٌ أَبُو هَاشِمٍ يَحُجُّونَ مِنَ الْكُوفَةِ ثُمَّ يَصُومُونَ وَلَا يُفْطِرُونَ مِنْ حِينِ يَخْرُجُونَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعُوا  

[Machine] "To identify Abdurrahman and he identified him. When Abdurrahman entered upon Hajjaj, he said, 'You are Abdurrahman bin Aswad.' Abdurrahman said, 'I won't enter the Prince's presence without him knowing my name.' Hajjaj said, 'Indeed.' Hajjaj then asked, 'What do you have with you?' Abdurrahman said, 'I have two bags made of paper.' Hajjaj asked, 'Don't you have anything else?' Abdurrahman replied, 'No.' Hajjaj said, 'By Allah, the One who there is no deity except Him, the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, what do you have with you other than these two bags?' Abdurrahman said, 'I swear by my Lord, I did not lie to the Prince.' Haji also used his right hand, which he would swear by, and said, 'By Allah.' Abdurrahman also swore, 'By my Lord,' and said, 'So then, just as I said to the Prince, I don't have anything other than these two bags.' Hajjaj said, 'This is unacceptable from you, take him to prison.' So, Abdurrahman was imprisoned, and in the prison, there were monks from the people of Sham. Abdurrahman saw something he had never seen before. If he was standing to pray, he would pray, and if he was not praying, he would stand alone, glorify Allah, and mention Allah. The Shamite saw something unfamiliar to him, so if he was a well person, what would he say to his Lord when he meets Him? He had a righteous man in this prison, and he didn't know if he was oppressed, so he sent a message to Abdurrahman and said, 'Indeed, Hajjaj is a person whom you know, and I am taking the risk for you to set a time with me. If Allah has saved me from my illness, then you can return to your imprisonment until Allah brings relief to you. And if I die, then you have saved yourself. I don't want you to swear for me.' Abdurrahman said to him, 'You have that.' So, he disguised himself and dressed in women's clothing between two women. While he was walking, a man riding his donkey approached him. When he reached him, he greeted him and said, 'Peace be upon you.' Then he got off and said to him, 'Ride, may Allah have mercy on you.' One of the two women answered him, 'We are women, we need it. Ride your beast, may Allah have mercy on you.' He said, 'There is no deity except Allah, I don't have any intention towards you.' She said, 'When Abdurrahman thought that he had understood, he said, 'Let's ride,' and he left for his home. The Shamite, the owner of the prison, died. We witnessed it around the donkey and we didn't find anyone who recognized it."  

أَنْ يُشْخِصَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَشْخَصَهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَلَى الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ أَنْتَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ قَالَ لَا أَخَالُ الْأَمِيرَ دَعَانِي إِلَّا وَقَدْ عَرِفَ اسْمِي قَالَ أَجَلْ قَالَ مَا لِفُلَانٍ عِنْدَكَ؟ قَالَ عِنْدِي جِرَابَانِ مِنْ وَرِقٍ قَالَ لَهُ عِنْدَكَ غَيْرُهُمَا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ مَا لِفُلَانٍ عِنْدَكَ إِلَّا هَذَانَ الْجِرَابَانِ؟ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ رَبِّي مَا كَذَبْتُ الْأَمِيرَ قَالَ وَكَانَتْ يَمِينُهُ الَّتِي يَحْلِفُ بِهَا إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَحْلِفَ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ رَبِّي قَالَ فَهُوَ كَمَا يَقُولُ لِلْأَمِيرِ مَا لَهُ عِنْدِي غَيْرُهُمَا قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا غَيْرُ مَقْبُولٍ مِنْكَ اذْهَبُوا بِهِ إِلَى السِّجْنِ قَالَ فَحُبِسَ فِي السِّجْنِ وَعَلَى السِّجْنِ نَاسِكٌ مِنْ نُسَّاكِ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ قَالَ فَرَأَى شَيْئًا لَمْ يَرَ مِثْلَهُ إِنْ كَانَ فِي حِينٍ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَهُوَ فِيهِ رَاتِبٌ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي وَإِنْ كَانَ حِينٌ لَا يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَهُوَ مُنْتَبِذٌ وَحْدَهُ يُسَبِّحُ وَيُكَبِّرُ وَيُذْكُرُ اللَّهَ ﷻ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَلْبَثِ الشَّامِيُّ أَنْ مَرِضَ فَقَالَ مَا أَقُولُ لِرَبِّي ﷻ إِذَا لَقِيتُهُ وَهَذَا الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ فِي هَذَا الْحَبْسِ لَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهُ مَظْلُومٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْحَجَّاجَ مَنْ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ وَأَنَا مُخْلٍ سَبِيلَكَ عَلَى أَنْ تَعِدَنِي مِنْكَ مَوْعِدًا إِنِ اللَّهُ ﷻ نَجَّانِي مِنْ مَرَضِي هَذَا أَنْ تَعُودَ إلى مَحْبَسِكَ فَتَكُونَ فِيهِ حَتّى يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكَ فَرَجًا وإنْ مِتُّ كُنْتَ قَدْ نَجَوْتَ بِنَفْسِكَ، لَسْتُ أُرِيدُ أنْ تَحْلِفَ لِي فَقالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: لَكَ ذَلِكَ قالَ: فَخَرَجَ مُتَنَكِّرًا حَتّى لَبِسَ ثِيابَ النِّساءِ مُتَنَكِّرًا بَيْنَ امْرَأتَيْنِ، فَبَيْنَما هُوَ يَمْشِي عَرَضَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ راكِبٌ عَلى بَغْلَتِهِ فَلَمّا انْتَهى إلَيْهِ قالَ لَهُ: سَلامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَقالَ: ارْكَبْ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ فَأجابَتْهُ إحْدى المَرْأتَيْنِ إنَّما نَحْنُ نِسْوَةٌ أقْبَلْنا فِي حاجَةٍ لَنا، ارْكَبْ دابَّتَكَ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ قالَ: لا إلَهَ إلّا اللَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي عَيْنٌ قالَ: فَلَمّا ظَنَّ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ أنَّهُ قَدْ انْتَبَهَ قالَ: فَرَكِبَ فانْطَلَقَ إلى مَنزِلِهِ قالَ: وماتَ الشّامِيُّ صاحِبُ السِّجْنِ قالَ: فَنَشْهَدُها حَوْلًا يَعْنِي البَغْلَةَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ أحَدًا يَعْرِفُها
