[Machine] That there were people sitting in the mosque after sunset and among them was a man who was saying "Exalt God in such and such a way, glorify God in such and such a way, and praise God in such and such a way." Abdallah asked, "Do they say this?" He replied, "Yes." Abdallah said, "When you see them doing that, come and inform me." So he went to them while he had a stick with him, and he sat down. When he heard what they were saying, he stood up, and he was a strong man. He said, "I am Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. By the One other than whom there is no deity, have you come with a dark innovation? Have you surpassed the Companions of Muhammad in knowledge?" Mu'adh said, "By Allah, we have not come with a dark innovation, nor have we surpassed the Companions of Muhammad in knowledge." Amr ibn Uthbah said, "O Abu Abdullah, we seek forgiveness from Allah." He said, "You should follow the straight path, for by Allah, if you do so, you will definitely be ahead. And if you take the right and left paths, you will go far astray."

[Machine] A group of people who sit from sunset until evening, praising and saying certain phrases. Abdullah said: "If they sit, let me know." When they sat down, they came to him, and he joined them and sat down. He had a headscarf on his head, which he removed when they started their praise. Abdullah bin Masood said, "I am Abdullah bin Masood." The people became silent, and he said, "You have brought a misguided innovation, or you have surpassed the knowledge of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ ." A man from the Banu Tamim tribe said, "We have not brought a misguided innovation, and we have not surpassed the knowledge of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ ." Umar bin Utbah bin Farqad said, "I seek forgiveness from Allah, O Ibn Masood, and I repent to Him." Abdullah bin Masood commanded them to disperse. Ibn Masood saw two gatherings in the mosque of Kufa, so he got up from one of them and asked, "Which of you was here before her?" One of them said, "We were." He said to the other, "Get up and go to them." So he made them one group.

[Machine] "He informed him, 'When they sit, then call me.' So, when they sat down, he called him. Abdullah came to them with a cloak until he entered upon them, and then he uncovered his head from the cloak and said, 'I am the son of Umm Abd, and by Allah, you have come with an innovation, either dark or you have exceeded the knowledge of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ .' Muadh said, and he was a well-spoken man, 'By Allah, we have not come with a dark innovation, nor have we exceeded the knowledge of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ .' Abdullah said, 'If you follow the people, then they have already preceded you with a clear precedence. And if you go from right to left, indeed, you have gone astray far and wide.'"
