My uncle Zuhair said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us to do a thing which was a source of help to us." I said, "Whatever Messenger of Allah ﷺ said was right." He said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me and asked, 'What are you doing with your farms?' I replied, 'We give our farms on rent on the basis that we get the yield produced at the banks of the water streams (rivers) for the rent, or rent it for some Wasqs of barley and dates.' Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not do so, but cultivate (the land) yourselves or let it be cultivated by others gratis, or keep it uncultivated.' I said, 'We hear and obey.'

ظُهَيْرٌ لَقَدْ نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ بِنَا رَافِقًا قُلْتُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهْوَ حَقٌّ قَالَ دَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ بِمَحَاقِلِكُمْ قُلْتُ نُؤَاجِرُهَا عَلَى الرُّبُعِ وَعَلَى الأَوْسُقِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالشَّعِيرِ قَالَ لا تَفْعَلُوا ازْرَعُوهَا أَوْ أَزْرِعُوهَا أَوْ أَمْسِكُوهَا قَالَ رَافِعٌ قُلْتُ سَمْعًا وَطَاعَةً

Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a practice which was useful for us. I said: What is this? (I believe) that whatrver Messenger of Allah ﷺ says is absolutely true. He (Zuhair) said that he (the Holy Prophet) asked me: What do you do with your cultivable lands? I said: Messenger of Allah, we rent those irrigated by canals for dry dates or barley. He said: Don't do that. Cultivate them or let them be cultivated (by others) or retain them yourself.

لَقَدْ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ بِنَا رَافِقًا فَقُلْتُ وَمَا ذَاكَ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهُوَ حَقٌّ قَالَ سَأَلَنِي كَيْفَ تَصْنَعُونَ بِمَحَاقِلِكُمْ فَقُلْتُ نُؤَاجِرُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الرَّبِيعِ أَوِ الأَوْسُقِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ أَوِ الشَّعِيرِ قَالَ فَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا ازْرَعُوهَا أَوْ أَزْرِعُوهَا أَوْ أَمْسِكُوهَا

"Zuhair bin Rafi' came to us and said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade me to do something that was convenient for us.' I said: 'What was that?' He said: 'The command of the Messenger of Allah is true. He asked me: What do you do with your land? I said: We rent it out in return for one-quarter (of the yield) and a number of Wasqs of dates or barley. He said: Do not do that. Cultivate it, give it to someone else to cultivate, or keep it.'"

نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا رَافِقًا قُلْتُ وَمَا ذَاكَ قَالَ أَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ حَقٌّ سَأَلَنِي كَيْفَ تَصْنَعُونَ فِي مَحَاقِلِكُمْ قُلْتُ نُؤَاجِرُهَا عَلَى الرُّبُعِ وَالأَوْسَاقِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ أَوِ الشَّعِيرِ قَالَ فَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا ازْرَعُوهَا أَوْ أَزْرِعُوهَا أَوْ أَمْسِكُوهَا رَوَاهُ بُكَيْرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ عَنْ أُسَيْدِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ فَجَعَلَ الرِّوَايَةَ لأَخِي رَافِعٍ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from doing something that was convenient for us.” I said: “What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said is true.” He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What do you with your farms?” We said: “We rent them out for one third or one quarter of their yield, and a certain amount of wheat and barley.” He said: “Do not do that; cultivate them or let others cultivate them.”

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid us from something that was beneficial for us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and asked, "What do you do with your crops?" I replied, "We divide them into quarters and eighths." He said, "Do not do that, instead, sow them or hold them." I said, "I hear and obey."

[Machine] He said, "Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a matter that used to be beneficial for us." Rafi' said, "So I asked him, what did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say? For it is the truth." He said, "Do you see your gardens? What do you do with them?" We said, "We rent them out for a quarter (of the produce) and for the poorest of dates and barley." He said, "Do not do that. Cultivate them or withhold them."

لَهُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَانَا عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا قَالَ رَافِعٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَهُوَ الْحَقُّ قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ مَحَاقِلَكُمْ مَاذَا تَصْنَعُونَ بِهَا؟ قُلْنَا نُؤَاجِرُهَا عَلَى الرُّبُعِ وَعَلَى الْأَوْسُقِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالشَّعِيرِ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا ازْرَعُوهَا أَوْ أَمْسِكُوهَا
