The Prophet ﷺ said, 'When you eat, do not wipe your hands till you have licked it, or had it licked by somebody else."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا

When any one of you eats food he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it or has it licked*.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا وَقَعَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَأْخُذْهَا فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ

I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "Indeed, Satan attends one of you in every matter of his affairs, even he attends him when he is eating. So if a morsel falls from one of you, let him remove from it whatever harm is on it, then let him eat it and not leave it for Satan. And when he finishes, let him lick his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing is."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مِنْ شَأْنِهِ، حَتَّى يَحْضُرَهُ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ، فَإِذَا سَقَطَتْ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمُ اللُّقْمَةُ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى، ثُمَّ لْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِهِ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ».

When any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove anything filthy from it and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan. He also commanded us that we should wipe the dish saying: You do not know in what portion of your food the blessing lies.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَيَّتِهِنَّ الْبَرَكَةُ

If the morsel of one of you falls down, he should wipe away anything injurious on it and eat it and not leave it for the devil. And he ordered us to clean the dish, for one of you does not leave it for the devil. And he ordered us to clean the dish, for one of you does not know in what part of his food the blessing lies.

When one of you eats, he must not wipe his hand with a handkerchief till he licks it or gives it to someone to lick.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلاَ يَمْسَحَنَّ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا

That Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When one of you eats, then let him lick his fingers, for indeed he does not know in which of them is the blessing." He said: There are narrations on this topic from Jabir, Ka'b bin Malik, and Anas.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَيَّتِهِنَّ الْبَرَكَةُ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ وَكَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَأَنَسٍ

“None of you should wipe his hand until he has licked it, for he does not know where the blessing if in his food.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لاَ يَمْسَحْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ

Abu Zubair said, I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say that I heard it from the Prophet ﷺ. And do not lift the plate until he licks it or licks it, for the blessing of the food is in it."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَلا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا قَالَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَلا يَرْفَعِ الصَّحْفَةَ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا فَإِنَّ آخِرَ الطَّعَامِ فِيهِ الْبَرَكَةُ

When one of you eats, he must not wipe his hand with a handkerchief till he licks it or gives it to someone to lick. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3847)

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: If a morsel of food falls from one of you, let him pick it up, remove any harm from it, and eat it, rather than leaving it for the devil.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When one of you drops a morsel, he should remove what has touched it from it, and then he should eat it. He should not leave it for the devil, nor should he wipe his hand with the towel until he has licked his fingers. Indeed, a man does not know in which of his food blessings have been sent down for him, and the devil lies in wait for the son of Adam at every thing, even in his food.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَسَقَطَتْ لُقْمَتُهُ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا أَرَابَهُ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ لِيَطْعَمْهَا وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلَا يَمْسَحْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ يَدَهُ فَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَرْصُدُ ابْنَ آدَمَ عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ

[AI] He heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "None of you should wipe his hand with a towel until he licks it, for a person does not know in which of his food blessings are bestowed upon him. Indeed, Satan lies in wait for people or mankind in everything, even during their food."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا يَمْسَحُ أَحَدُكُمْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ يَدَهُ فَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ وَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَرْصُدُ لِلنَّاسِ أَوِ الْإِنْسَانِ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a morsel of food falls, one of you should remove any dirt from it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan. And wipe your plates, for blessing cannot be determined in which of your meals it will be found."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطِ الْأَذَى عَنْهَا وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَأَسْلِتُوا الصَّحْفَةَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُدْرَى فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِكُمْ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ»

[AI] He heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "If one of you drops a morsel of food from his hand, let him remove any dirt from it and eat it. He should not leave it for the devil, nor should he wipe his hand with a cloth until he licks his hand, for a person does not know in which of his foods the blessing lies, and the devil lurks upon people or upon a person in everything, even when he is eating or his food. He should not lift the plate until he licks it or allows someone else to lick it, for indeed there is blessings in the last part of the food."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِذَا طَعِمَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَسَقَطَتْ لُقْمَتُهُ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا رَابَهُ مِنْهَا وَلْيَطْعَمْهَا وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ يَدَهُ فَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ وَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَرْصُدُ النَّاسَ أَوِ الْإِنْسَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى عِنْدَ مَطْعَمِهِ أَوْ طَعَامِهِ وَلَا يَرْفَعُ الصَّحْفَةَ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا فَإِنَّ فِي آخِرِ الطَّعَامِ الْبَرَكَةَ»

قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إذا أكل أحدكم فليلعق أصابعه فإنه لا يدري في أيتهن البركة

[AI] Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri narrated to me that the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you eats food, he should not wipe his hand until he licks his fingers, as he does not know in which food the blessing lies."

أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ ؓ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا طَعِمَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you should touch his hand until he licks it or it is licked."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا يَمْسَحْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا»

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةٌ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا أَصَابَهَا مِنَ الْأَذَى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلَا يَمْسَحْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أِيِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ

If the morsel of one of you falls down, he should wipe away anything injurious on it and eat it and not leave it for the devil. And he ordered us to clean the dish, for one of you does not leave it for the devil. And he ordered us to clean the dish, for one of you does not know in what part of his food the blessing lies. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا لَعِقَ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلَاثَ وَقَالَ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ عَنْهَا الْأَذَى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَسْلُتَ الصَّحْفَةَ وَقَالَ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أِيِّ طَعَامِهِ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ

When one of you eats, he must not wipe his hand with a handkerchief till he licks it or gives it to someone to lick. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3847)

"إذا أكل أحدُكم طعامًا فلا يَمْسحْ يدَه بالمنِديلِ حتى يَلعَقَها أو يُلعِقها" .

"إذا أكل أحدُكم طعامَه فلْيلعقْ أصابِعهَ فإنه لا يدرى في أي طعامِه تكون البركُةُ" .

"إذا أكلَ أحدُكم فلا يمسحْ يدَه حتى يلعَق أصابِعه الثلاثَ".

"إذا أكلَ أحدُكم الطعامَ فْليُمصَّ أصابِعَه فإنّه لا يدرى في أيِّ طعامهِ تكونُ البركةُ" .

When any one of you drops a mouthful he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan, and should not wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies. (Using translation from Muslim 2033b)

"إذا سَقطت لُقمةُ أحدكم فليُمِطْ ما بها من الأذى وليَأكُلْها ولا يدَعْها للشَّيطانِ، ولا يَمْسحْ يَدَهُ بالمنديل حتى يَلعَقَها أو يُلعِقَها؛ فإِنَّهُ لا يدرى في أي طعامِه البركةُ" .

"إذا سَقَطتْ لُقمةُ أحدِكُمْ فْليُمطْ عْنها الأذى ولْيأكُلْها، ولا يدَعْها للشيطان، ولْيَسْلُت أحدُكم الصحفةَ؛ فإِنَّكُمْ لا تدرُون في أيِّ طَعَامِكُمْ تَكُونُ البركةُ".

"إذا طَعِمَ أحدُكُمْ فسقطتْ لُقمتُه منْ يده فَليُمطْ ما رَابَه مِنْها، وليَطعَمْهَا ولا يَدَعْها للشَّيطان، ولا يمسَحْ يَدَه بالمِنْديِل حتَّى يلَعقَ يَدَهُ، فإِنَّ الرَّجُلَّ لا يدْرِى في أيِّ طعامِه يُبارك له، وإنَّ الشَّيطانَ يرْصُدُ الإنْسانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شيء حتَّى عِنْدَ مَطْعِمه، ولا يرْفَع الصَّحْفَةَ حتَّى يلعقها، أو يُلعِقها، فإِنَّ في آخرِ الطَّعامِ البركةَ" .

"إذا طَعم أحدُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعامِ فلا يَمْسحْ يَدَهُ حتَّى يَلعَقَ أصابعَه، فإِنَّه لا يدْرِى في أَيِّ طعامِه يبُارَكُ لَهُ".

"إِذَا وقعتْ اللقمةُ مِنْ أحدكُمْ فلْيَأخُذْها فْليُمطْ عَنْها الأذَى، وليأكُلها، ولا يَدعْها للشّيطانِ وليسْلِتْ أحدُكُمْ الصَّحْفَةَ، فإِنّكمْ لا تدْرُون في أيِّ طَعامِكُمْ البركة".

I heard Allah's Apostle ﷺ as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies. (Using translation from Muslim 2033d)

"إِنَّ الشَّيطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُم عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْ شَأْنِه، حتَّى يَحْضُرَهُ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ، فَإِذَا سَقَطَتْ مِنْ أحَدِكُمْ اللُّقمَةُ فَليُمْطَ مَا كَانَ بِها مِن أَذًى ثُمَّ لْيَأْكُلْها وَلَا يَدَعْها لِلشَّيطَانِ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ فَليَلعَق أَصَابِعَه فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فيِ أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ".
