17. Prohibited Actions (6/9)
"If any one of you swears an oath, then he sees something better than it, let him offer expiation for his oath, and look at what is better and do it."
"Whoever swears an oath, then sees something better than it, let him do that which is better."
He who took an oath and then found another thing better than (this) should expiate for the oath (broken) by him and do (the better thing).
He who took an oath and (later on) found another thing better than that, he should do that which is better, and expiate for the vow (broken by him).
He who took an oath, but he found something else better than that, should do that which is better and break his oath.
I went along with some men from the Ash-ariyin to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and it happened that I met him while he was in an angry mood. We asked him to provide us with mounts, but he swore that he would not give us any. Later on he said, "By Allah, Allah willing, if ever I take an oath (to do something) and later on I find something else better than the first, then I do the better one and give expiation for the dissolution of my oath."
"By Allah, if anyone of you insists on fulfilling an oath by which he may harm his family, he commits a greater sin in Allah's sight than that of dissolving his oath and making expiation for it."
17.64 Expiation of Oaths
This Verse: "Allah will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths." (5.89) was revealed about a man's state men (during his talk), "No, by Allah," and "Yes, by Allah."
regarding: 'Allah will not call you to account for that which is unintentional in your oaths...' (2.225) This Verse was revealed concerning such oath formulas as: 'No, by Allah!' and 'Yes, by Allah!' something against his oath due to forgetfulness should he make expiation?). And the Statement of Allah: 'And there is no blame on you if you make a mistake therein.' (33.5) And Allah said:-- '(Moses said to Khadir): Call me not to account for what I forgot.' (18.73)
17.65 Abomination of Swearing in Transaction
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The swearing (by the seller) may persuade the buyer to purchase the goods but that will be deprived of Allah's blessing."
Beware of swearing; it produces a ready sale for a commodity, but blots out the blessing.
17.66 About Begging in the Name of Allah
The Prophet ﷺ said: Nothing but Paradise must be begged for Allah's sake.
The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone seeks protection in Allah's name, grant him protection; if anyone begs in Allah's name, give him something; if anyone gives you an invitation, accept it; and if anyone does you a kindness, recompense him; but if you have not the means to do so, pray for him until you feel that you have compensated him.
If anyone asks you refuge for Allah’s sake give him refuge; and if anyone asks you (for something) for Allah’s sake, give him. Sahl and Sulaiman said: if anyone calls you, respond to him. The Agreed version goes; if you do not afford to compensate him, pray Allah for him until you know that you have compensated him.
17.67 Prohibition of Addressing somebody as 'The King of Kings'
The vilest name in Allah's sight is Malik al-Amidh (King of Kings). The narration transmitted on the authority of Shaiba (contains these words): There is no king but Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. Sufyan said: Similarly, the word Shahinshah (is also the vilest appellation). Ahmad b. Hanbal said: I asked Abu 'Amr about the meaning of Akhna. He said: The vilest.
17.68 Prohibition of Conferring a Title of Honor upon a Sinner, a Hypocrite, and the Like
The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not call a hypocrite sayyid (master), for if he is a sayyid, you will displease your Lord, Most High.
17.69 Undesirability of Reviling Fever
Umm Sa'ib or Umm Musayyib. why is it that you are shivering? She said:" It is fever and may it not be blessed by Allah, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Don't curse fever for it expiates the sin of the children of Adam just as furnace removes the alloy of iron.
17.70 Prohibition of Reviling the Wind
"Do not curse the wind. When you see what you dislike, then say: 'Allahumma inna nas-aluka min khairi hadhihir-rih, wa khairi ma fiha wa khairi ma umirat bihi wa na'udhu bika min sharri hadhihir-rih wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma umirat bihi' ('O Allah! Indeed we ask you of the good of this wind, and the good of what is in it, and the good of what it has been commanded. And we seek refuge in You from the evil of this wind, and the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been commanded.)"
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The wind comes from Allah's mercy. Salamah's version has: It is Allah's mercy; it (sometimes) brings blessing and (sometimes) brings punishment. So when you see it, do not revile it, but ask Allah for some of its good, and seek refuge in Allah from its evil.
Whenever the wind was stormy, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: O Allah! I ask Thee for what is good in it, and the good which it contains, and the good of that which it was sent for. I seek refuge with Thee from what is evil in it, what evil it contains, and the evil of that what it was sent for; and when there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, his colour underwent a change, and he went out and in, backwards and forwards; and when the rain came, he felt relieved, and I noticed that (the sign of relief) on his face. 'A'isha asked him (about it) and he said: It may be as the people of 'Ad said: When they saw a cloud formation coming to their valley they said:" It is a cloud which would give us rain" (Qur'an, xlvi. 24).
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا عَصَفَتِ الرِّيحُ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا وَشَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ قَالَتْ وَإِذَا تَخَيَّلَتِ السَّمَاءُ تَغَيَّرَ لَوْنُهُ وَخَرَجَ وَدَخَلَ وَأَقْبَلَ وَأَدْبَرَ فَإِذَا مَطَرَتْ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَعَرَفْتُ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّهُ يَا عَائِشَةُ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ عَادٍ { فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا}
17.71 Undesirability of Reviling the Rooster
The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not curse the cock, for it awakens for prayer.
17.72 Prohibition of Attributing Rain to the Stars
The Prophet ﷺ led us in the Fajr prayer at Hudaibiya after a rainy night. On completion of the prayer, he faced the people and said, "Do you know what your Lord has said (revealed)?" The people replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "Allah has said, 'In this morning some of my slaves remained as true believers and some became non-believers; whoever said that the rain was due to the Blessings and the Mercy of Allah had belief in Me and he disbelieves in the stars, and whoever said that it rained because of a particular star had no belief in Me but believes in that star.' "
Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the morning prayer in Al-Hudaibiya and it had rained the previous night. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished the prayer he faced the people and said, "Do you know what your Lord has said?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." (The Prophet ﷺ said), "Allah says, 'In this morning some of My worshipers remained as true believers and some became non-believers; he who said that it had rained with the blessing and mercy of Allah is the one who believes in Me and does not believe in star, but he who said it had rained because of such and such (star) is a disbeliever in Me and is a believer in star.' "
We went out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Al-Hudaibiya. One night it rained and Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the Fajr prayer and (after finishing it), turned to us and said, "Do you know what your Lord has said?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know it better." He said, "Allah said:-- "(Some of) My slaves got up believing in Me, And (some of them) disbelieving in Me. The one who said: We have been given Rain through Allah's Mercy and Allah's Blessing and Allah's Bounty, then he is a believer in Me, and is a disbeliever in the star. And whoever said: We have been given rain because of such and- such star, then he is a believer in the star, and is a disbeliever in Me."
17.73 Prohibition of Calling a Muslim an Infidel
You would risk becoming a disbeliever if you call another Muslim a kāfir (disbeliever)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If anyone says to his brother O kāfir (disbeliever)! Then surely, one of them such."
Prohibitions: considering someone else one's father, claiming someone else's property, labeling a Muslim a kāfir (disbeliever) or an enemy of Allah
heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No person who claimed someone else as his father other than ˹his own˺ knowingly has committed nothing but kufr (infidelity). He who made a claim of a thing that does not belong to him is not from us and he should prepare his abode in Hellfire."
"And he who labeled anyone with kufr (disbelief) or called him an enemy of Allah while he is not, then it gets ˹thrown˺ back on him."
17.74 Prohibition of Obscenity
"The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse, nor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul."
"Al-Fuhsh is not present in anything but it mars it, and Al-Haya' is not present in anything but it beautifies it."
17.75 Undesirability of Pretentiousness and Exaggeration during Conversation
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah , the Exalted, hates the eloquent one among men who moves his tongue round (among his teeth), as cattle do.
"Indeed the most beloved among you to me, and the nearest to sit with me on the Day of Judgment is the best of you in character. And indeed, the most disliked among you to me, and the one sitting furthest from me on the Day of Judgement are the tharthārūn (overbearingly talkative), and the mutashaddiqūn (scandal spreaders) and the muthafayhiqūn." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! We know about the tharthārūn, and the mutashaddiqūn, but what about the muthafayhiqūn?"' He said:"The arrogant."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should say Khabuthat Nafsi, but he is recommended to say 'Laqisat Nafsi."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should say Khabuthat Nafsi but he is recommended to say 'Laqisat Nafsi (See Hadith No. 202)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked to sleep before the ʿIsha' prayer and to talk after it.
Once the Prophet ﷺ led us in the ʿIsha' prayer during the last days of his life and after finishing it (the prayer) (with Taslim) he said: "Do you realize (the importance of) this night?" Nobody present on the surface of the earth tonight will be living after the completion of one hundred years from this night."
"One night Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the ʿIsha' prayer and that is the one called Al-ʿAtma [??] by the people. After the completion of the prayer, he faced us and said, "Do you know the importance of this night? Nobody present on the surface of the earth tonight will be living after one hundred years from this night." (See Hadith No. 575).
The Prophet ﷺ prayed one of the ʿIsha' prayer in his last days and after finishing it with Taslim, he stood up and said, "Do you realize (the importance of) this night? Nobody present on the surface of the earth tonight would be living after the completion of one hundred years from this night." The people made a mistake in grasping the meaning of this statement of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and they indulged in those things which are said about these narrators (i.e. some said that the Day of Resurrection will be established after 100 years etc.) But the Prophet ﷺ said, "Nobody present on the surface of earth tonight would be living after the completion of 100 years from this night"; he meant "When that century (people of that century) would pass away."

We were in the company of 'Aishah. When her food was brought in, al-Qasim stood up to say his prayer. Thereupon , 'Aishah said : I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) say: Prayer should not be offered in presence of meals, nor at the moment when one is struggling with two evils (e.g. when one is feeling the call of nature.)
