A lady came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have come to you to offer myself to you." He raised his eyes and looked at her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not make any decision, she sat down. On that, a man from his companions got up and said. "O Allah's Apostle! If you are not in need of this woman, then marry her to me." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you have anything to offer her?" He replied. "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go to your family and see if you can find something.' The man went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have not found anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Try to find something, even if it is an iron ring.'' He went again and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not even an iron ring, but I have this waist sheet of mine." The man had no upper garment, so he intended to give her, half his waist sheet. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ''What would she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing of it over her body, and if she wears it, you will have nothing over your body." So that man sat for a long period and then got up, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him going away, so he ordered somebody to call him. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ asked him, " How much of the Qur'an do you know?" He replied, "I know such Surat and such Surat and such Surat," and went on counting it, The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you recite it by heart?" he replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go, I have married this lady to you for the amount of the Qur'an you know by heart."

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ لأَهَبَ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ اذْهَبْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَانْظُرْ هَلْ تَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ شَىْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّهَا قَالَ أَتَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have come to give you myself in marriage (without Mahr)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at her. He looked at her carefully and fixed his glance on her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not say anything, she sat down. A man from his companions got up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you got anything to offer?" The man said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Go to your family and see if you have something." The man went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, I have not found anything." Allah's Apostle said, "(Go again) and look for something, even if it is an iron ring." He went again and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I could not find even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (waist sheet)." He had no rida. He added, "I give half of it to her." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What will she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will be naked, and if she wears it, you will be naked." So that man sat down for a long while and then got up (to depart). When Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him going, he ordered that he be called back. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ said, "How much of the Qur'an do you know?" He said, "I know such Sura and such Sura," counting them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you know them by heart?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go, I marry her to you for that much of the Qur'an which you have."

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ أَهَبُ لَكَ نَفْسِي قَالَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ فِيهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ وَهَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ قَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَانْظُرْ هَلْ تَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ شَىْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى إِذَا طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ تَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman presented herself to the Prophet (for marriage). A man said to him, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! (If you are not in need of her) marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "What have you got?" The man said, "I have nothing." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Go and search for something) even if it were an iron ring." The man went and returned saying, "No, I have not found anything, not even an iron ring; but this is my (Izar) waist sheet, and half of it is for her." He had no Rida' (upper garment). The Prophet ﷺ said, "What will she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing over her; and if she wears it, you will have nothing over you." So the man sat down and when he had sat a long time, he got up (to leave). When the Prophet ﷺ saw him (leaving), he called him back, or the man was called (for him), and he said to the man, "How much of the Qur'an do you know (by heart)?" The man replied I know such Sura and such Sura (by heart)," naming the Suras The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an ."

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدَكَ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَىْءٌ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي وَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ قَالَ سَهْلٌ وَمَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَمَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى إِذَا طَالَ مَجْلَسُهُ قَامَ فَرَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَدَعَاهُ أَوْ دُعِي لَهُ فَقَالَ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ يُعَدِّدُهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَمْلَكْنَاكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

If you wear it, she will have nothing over herself thereof (will be naked); and if she wears it, then you will have nothing over yourself thereof ' So the man sat for a long period and then got up (to leave). When Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him leaving, he ordered that he e called back. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ asked (him), "How much of the Qur'an do you know (by heart)?" The man replied, I know such Sura and such Sura and such Sura," naming the suras. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you recite it by heart?" He said, 'Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go I let you marry her for what you know of the Qur'an (as her Mahr).

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ لأَهَبَ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ أَىْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ قَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ اذْهَبْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَانْظُرْ هَلْ تَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ شَىْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلَسُهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةَ كَذَا وَسُورَةَ كَذَا وَسُورَةَ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا قَالَ أَتَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I present myself (to you) (for marriage). She stayed for a long while, then a man said, "If you are not in need of her then marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you got anything m order to pay her Mahr?" He said, "I have nothing with me except my Izar (waist sheet)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you give her your Izar, you will have no Izar to wear, (so go) and search for something. He said, "I could not find anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Try (to find something), even if it were an iron ring But he was not able to find (even that) The Prophet ﷺ said (to him). "Do you memorize something of the Qur'an?" "Yes. ' he said, "such Sura and such Sura," naming those Suras The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an (by heart).

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي وَهَبْتُ مِنْ نَفْسِي فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلاً فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ قَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلاَّ إِزَارِي فَقَالَ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ جَلَسْتَ لاَ إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدِ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ فَقَالَ أَمَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

While I was (sitting) among the people in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ a woman stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! She has given herself in marriage to you; please give your opinion of her." The Prophet did not give her any reply. She again stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! She has given herself (in marriage) to you; so please give your opinion of her. The Prophet ﷺ did not give her any reply. She again stood up for the third time and said, "She has given herself in marriage to you: so give your opinion of her." So a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Marry her to me." The Prophet asked him, "Have you got anything?" He said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and search for something, even if it were an iron ring." The man went and searched and then returned saying, "I could not find anything, not even an iron ring." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you know something of the Qur'an (by heart)?" He replied, "I know (by heart) such Sura and such Sura." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go! I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an (by heart).

سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَفِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ قَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهَا شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهَا شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَتِ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنْكِحْنِيهَا قَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have come to present myself to you (for marriage)." She kept standing for a long period during which period the Prophet ﷺ looked at her carefully. When she stayed for a Long period, a man said to the Prophet ﷺ "If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you got anything to give her (as Mahr)?" The man said, "No." The Prophet said, "Go (to your house) and search for something." The man went and came back to say, "By Allah, I could not find anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go again and search for something, even if it be an iron ring." He went again and came back saying, "No, by Allah, I could not get even an iron ring." The man had only an Izar and had no Rida' (upper garment). He said, "I will give her my Izar as Mahr." On that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Your Izar? If she wears it, nothing of it will remain on you, and if you wear it nothing of it will be on her" The man went aside and sat down When the Prophet ﷺ saw him leaving (after a while), he called back and asked. "How much Qur'an do you know (by heart)? He said, 'I know such and such Suras," naming some Suras. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I marry her to you for the amount of Qur'an you know (by heart).

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَهْلاً يَقُولُ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ جِئْتُ أَهَبُ نَفْسِي فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلاً فَنَظَرَ وَصَوَّبَ فَلَمَّا طَالَ مُقَامُهَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ قَالَ عِنْدَكَ شَىْءٌ تُصْدِقُهَا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ انْظُرْ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ إِنْ وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ قَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ مَا عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ فَقَالَ أُصْدِقُهَا إِزَارِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِزَارُكَ إِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمَ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ فَتَنَحَّى الرَّجُلُ فَجَلَسَ فَرَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَقَالَ مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا لِسُوَرٍ عَدَّدَهَا قَالَ قَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman came to Messenger of Allah. ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have come to you to entrust myself to you (you may contract my marriage with anyone at your discretion). Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her and cast a glance at her from head to foot. Messenger of Allah ﷺ then lowered his head. When the woman saw that he had made no decision in regard to her, she sat down. There stood up a person from amongst his companions and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need of her. He (the Prophet) said: is there anything with you (which you con give as a dower)? He said: No, Messenger of Allah, by Allah I have nothing. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Go to your people (family) and see if you can find something. He returned and said: I have found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: See even if it is an iron ring. He went and returned and said: No, by Allah, not even an iron ring, but only this lower garment of mine (Sahl said that he had no upper garment), half of which (I am prepared to part with) for her. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: How can your lower garment serve your purpose, for it you wear it, she would not be able to make any use of it and if she wears it there would not be anything on you? The man sat down and as the sitting prolonged he stood up (in disappointment) and as he was going back Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded (him) to be called back, and as he came, he said to him: Do you know any part of the Qur'an? He said: I know such and such surahs (and he counted them), whereupon he ﷺ said: Can you recite them from heart (from your memory)? He said: Yes, whereupon he (Messenger of Allah) said: Go, I have given her to you in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know.

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ أَهَبُ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ فِيهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ فَهَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَانْظُرْ هَلْ تَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتِمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلاَ خَاتِمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى إِذَا طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ تَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هَذَا حَدِيثُ ابْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ وَحَدِيثُ يَعْقُوبَ يُقَارِبُهُ فِي اللَّفْظِ

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you. When she stood for a long time, a man got up and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: Have you anything to give her as dower ? He replied: I have nothing by this lower garment of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you give your lower garment, you will sit while you have no lower garment. So look for something else. He said: I do not find anything. He said: Look for something, even though it should be an iron ring. The man sought it but found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know anything from the Qur'an ? He said: Yes, I know surah so and so, which he named. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلاً فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلاَّ إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّكَ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِزَارَكَ جَلَسْتَ وَلاَ إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah and said: "I present myself to you (for marriage)." So she stood for a long time. Then a man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me if you have no need of her." So he said: "Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?" He said: "I have nothing except this Izar." So the Messenger of Allah said: "If you give her your Izar then you will have no Izar, so search for something." He said: "I did not find anything." He said: "Search for something, even if it just an iron ring." He said: So he searched but he did not find anything. The Messenger of Allah said: "Do you have any Qur'an (memorized)?" He said: "Yes. This Surat and that Surat." And he named the Surat. So the Messenger of Allah said: "I marry her to you for what you have (memorized) of the Qur'an."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلاً فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلاَّ إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِزَارَكَ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا جَلَسْتَ وَلاَ إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

It was narrated that Sahl bin Sa'd said: "I was among the people when a woman said: 'I offer myself (in marriage) to you, O Messenger of Allah, see what you think of me.' A man stood up and said: 'Marry me to her.' He said: 'Go and find (something), even if it is an iron ring.' So he went, but he could not find anything, not even an iron ring. So the Messenger of Allah said: 'Do you have (memorized) any surahs of the Qur'an?' He said: 'Yes.' So he married him to her on the basis of what he knew of surahs of the Qur'an."

قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَرَأْ فِيَّ رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَعَكَ مِنْ سُوَرِ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَزَوَّجَهُ بِمَا مَعَهُ مِنْ سُوَرِ الْقُرْآنِ

"I was among the people with the Prophet when a woman stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself in marriage to you, so see what you think of her.' He remained silent and the Prophet did not give any answer. Then she stood up (again) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself in marriage to you, so see what you think of her.' A man stood up and said: 'Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Do you have anything?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Go and look, even if it is just an iron ring.' So he went and looked then he came and said: 'I could not find anything, not even an iron ring.' He said: 'Have you memorized anything of the Qur'an?' He said: 'Yes, Surah such-and-such and Surah such-and-such.' He said: 'I will marry you to her on the basis of what you have memorized of the Qur'an.'"

سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَفِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَأْ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَسَكَتَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِشَىْءٍ ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَأْ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ شَىْءٌ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

"O Messenger of Allah, I have come to offer myself to you (in marriage)." The Messenger of Allah looked her up and down then lowered his head. When the woman saw that he was not saying anything about her, she sat down. A man among his Companions stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you do not want to marry her, then marry me to her." He said: "Do you have anything?" He said: "No, by Allah, I do not have anything." He said: "Look, even if it is only an iron ring." He went, then he came back and said: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, not even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (lower garment)" - Sahl said: "He did not have a Rida' (upper garment)" - "she can have half of it." The Messenger of Allah said: "What could she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will not have any of it, and if she wears it, you will not have any of it." The man sat down for a long time, then he got up, and the Messenger of Allah saw him leaving, so he ordered that he be called back. When he came, he said: "What do you know of the Qur'an?" He said: "I know Surah such-and-such, and Surah such-and-such," and listed them. He said: "Can you recite them by heart?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then I marry you to her on the basis of what you know of the Qur'an."

"O Messenger of Allah, I give myself in marriage to you." She stood for a long time, then a man stood up and said: "Marry her to me if you do not want to marry her." The Messenger of Allah said: "Do you have anything?" He said: "I cannot find anything." He said: "Look (for something), even if it is only an iron ring." So he looked but he could not find anything. The Messenger of Allah said to him: "Have you (memorized) anything of the Qur'an?" He said: "Yes, Surah such and such and Surah such and such," naming them. The Messenger of Allah said: "I marry her to you for what you know of the Qur'an."

[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself to you, so give your opinion about her." A man said, "Marry her to me." But the Prophet did not respond to him until the third time, then he asked, "Do you have anything to give as dowry?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet then said, "Go and try to find something, even if it is a ring made of iron." The man said, "I could not find a ring made of iron." The Prophet asked, "Do you have anything from the Quran with you?" The man said, "Yes, I have Surah so and so and Surah so and so." The Prophet then said, "I have married her to you based on what you have from the Quran."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ حَاجَةٌ بِهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ» فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ أَعْطَيْتَهُ إِيَّاهَا جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا» فَقَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ «فَالْتَمِسْ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ» قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] He said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a woman approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I offer myself to you as a gift." He looked at her up and down and straightened himself. Then he remained silent. A man stood up who had nothing on him except for a single garment tied around his neck. He said, "If you don't need her, then marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anything to give as a dowry?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then you must find something. Go and look for it." So he went and searched, but he found nothing. He returned and said, "I couldn't find anything." The Prophet ﷺ told him, "Go and search, even if it's just a ring made of iron." So he went and returned, saying, "I couldn't find even a ring made of iron." Then he sat down, and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have any part of the Quran with you?" He replied, "Surah such and such and Surah such and such." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have married her to you based on what you have of the Quran."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَقْبَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي جِئْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَهَبُ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَصَعَّدَ فِيهَا النَّظَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ سَكَتَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مَا عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا ثَوْبٌ وَاحِدٌ عَاقِدٌ طَرَفَيْهِ عَلَى عُنُقَهِ فَقَالَ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ «أَعِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَلَا بُدَّ لَهَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَاذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ» فَذَهَبَ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ لَمْ أَجِدْهُ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» فَقَالَ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا فَقَالَ «قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] A woman offered herself to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and a man from the people said, "Marry her to me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What do you have?" He said, "I have nothing." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go, look for something, even if it is just an iron ring." So he went and came back and said, "No, by Allah, I have not found anything, not even an iron ring, but this is my Izaar (waist wrapper) for her. Half of it is for her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What will you do with your Izaar? If you cover yourself with it, there will be nothing for her from it, and if you let her wear it, there will be nothing for you from it." So the man sat down until his sitting became long. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him or he was sent for, and he asked him, "What portion of the Qur'an do you have?" He said, "I have such and such Surahs." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I have married her to you for what you have of the Qur'an."

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ «مَا عِنْدَكَ؟» قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَيْءٌ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا وَلَا خَاتَمَ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي لَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا تَصْنَعُ بإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ» فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَدَعَاهُ أَوْ جِيءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ «مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

"O Messenger of Allah, I have come to offer myself to you (in marriage)." The Messenger of Allah looked her up and down then lowered his head. When the woman saw that he was not saying anything about her, she sat down. A man among his Companions stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you do not want to marry her, then marry me to her." He said: "Do you have anything?" He said: "No, by Allah, I do not have anything." He said: "Look, even if it is only an iron ring." He went, then he came back and said: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, not even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (lower garment)" - Sahl said: "He did not have a Rida' (upper garment)" - "she can have half of it." The Messenger of Allah said: "What could she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will not have any of it, and if she wears it, you will not have any of it." The man sat down for a long time, then he got up, and the Messenger of Allah saw him leaving, so he ordered that he be called back. When he came, he said: "What do you know of the Qur'an?" He said: "I know Surah such-and-such, and Surah such-and-such," and listed them. He said: "Can you recite them by heart?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then I marry you to her on the basis of what you know of the Qur'an." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3339)

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ جِئْتُ أَهَبُ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَقَامَتْ طَوِيلًا لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ فِيهَا النَّظَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ فَلَمَّا طَالَ مُقَامُهَا تَنَحَّتْ وَجَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَانْظُرْ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ وَعَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ مَا عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِزَارِي قَالَ إِنَّ إِزَارَكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ فَتَنَحَّى الرَّجُلُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ فَقَالَ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] He heard Sahl bin Sa'd say, "I was with the people by the Prophet's ﷺ when a woman came to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have donated myself to you, so see what you think.' A man stood up and said, 'Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need for her.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent and then she stood up and said the same thing. The man said, 'Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need for her.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the man, 'Do you have anything to give her?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then go and look for something.' So he went and came back saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Go and look for something, even if it is an iron ring.' So he went and came back saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing, not even an iron ring.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do you have anything from the Quran?' He said, 'Yes, Surah such and such, and Surah such and such.' He said, 'Then go, for I have married her to you with what you have from the Quran.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ كُنْتُ فِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبَتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَرَأْ فِيَّ رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَنْكِحْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ فِيهَا حَاجَةٌ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَنْكِحْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ فِيهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِلرَّجُلِ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ تُعْطِيهَا إِيَّاهُ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَاذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ شَيْئًا» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was approached by a woman who offered herself to him. He remained silent. Then a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you do not have a need for her, then marry her to me." The Prophet asked him, "Do you have anything to give in return?" The man replied, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet then asked him, "Do you recite anything from the Quran?" The man said, "Yes." The Prophet asked, "What do you recite?" The man mentioned a few Surahs. The Prophet said, "I have given her to you in exchange for what you have from the Quran." Then, I saw him walking away and she was following him.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَتَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَوَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَهُ فَصَمَتَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا؟ فَقَالَ «أَلَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَقْرَأُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ سُورَةَ كَذَا وَسُورَةَ كَذَا فَقَالَ «قَدْ أَمْلَكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ» فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَمْضِي وَهِيَ تَتْبَعُهُ

[AI] A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered herself to him. He remained silent and did not respond, so she stood there for a long time until we pitied her because of how long she had been standing. Then a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you have anything to give as mahr (dowry)?" The man replied, "I have nothing except my waistbelt (shamlah), which I am wearing." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you agree to marry her with what you have from the Quran?" The man said, "Yes, by Allah." The Prophet ﷺ then told him, "Go and search even if it is just an iron ring." So the man went and stayed for as long as Allah willed. Then he returned and said, "I could not find anything, not even an iron ring." The Prophet ﷺ then asked him, "What do you have from the Quran?" The man mentioned certain verses. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "I have married you to her based on what you have from the Quran."

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَرَضَتْ عَلَيْهِ نَفْسَهَا فَسَكَتَ فَقَامَتْ حَتَّى رَثَيْنَا لَهَا مِنْ طُولِ الْقِيَامِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ «مَا تُصْدِقُهَا؟» قَالَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْلَةَ الَّتِي عَلَيَّ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي غَيْرُهَا قَدْ عَقَدَهَا عَلَى صَدْرِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ «أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَرَّسْتَ أَعِنْدَكَ غَيْرُهَا؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ فَمَكَثَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا وَجَدْتُ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ «مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ آيَةُ كَذَا وَآيَةُ كَذَا قَالَ فَقَالَ «فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَ عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a woman came to him and presented herself to him, so he lowered his gaze from her and then raised it. He did not send her back, so a man from his companions said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." He said, "Do you have anything?" The man said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not have anything." He said, "Not even an iron ring?" He said, "No, not even an iron ring, but I give her my clothing, and I will keep half of it." He said, "No, but do you have anything from the Quran?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then go, for I have married her to you according to what you have from the Quran."

كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَفَّضَ فِيهَا الْبَصَرَ وَرَفَعَهُ فَلَمْ يُرْجِعْهَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا قَالَ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا عِنْدِي مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ «وَلَا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ؟» قَالَ وَلَا خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ أَشُقُّ بُرْدِي هَذِهِ وأُعْطِيهَا وَآخُذُ النِّصْفَ فَقَالَ «لَا وَلَكِنْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

[AI] A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered herself to him, but he remained silent. She then presented herself to him again, and he remained silent. He said, "I saw her standing or leaning, offering herself to him while he remained silent." A man from the Ansar (helpers) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need for her, then marry her to me." He said, "Do you have anything to offer?" The man said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then go and find something, even if it is just a ring made of iron." So the man went and then returned, saying, "By Allah, I did not find anything except for this garment of mine, which is the most precious thing I have between me and her." The Prophet ﷺ said, "There is no favor for you in your garment, so have you memorized anything from the Quran?" The man said, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What?" The man mentioned a specific chapter. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have indeed given her away with what you have from the Quran." Then, I saw him walking while she was following him.

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَوَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَهُ فَصَمَتَ ثُمَّ عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَصَمَتَ قَالَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهَا قَائِمَةً مَلِيًّا أَوْ هَوِيًّا تَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ صَامِتٌ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ أَحْسَبُهُ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا فَقَالَ «أَلَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَاذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ ثَوْبِي هَذَا أَشُقُّهُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَا فِي ثَوْبِكَ فَضْلٌ عَنْكَ فَهَلْ تَقْرَأُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «مَاذَا؟» قَالَ سُورَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ «فَقَدْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ» قَالَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَمْضِي وَهِيَ تَتْبَعُهُ

A lady came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have come to you to offer myself to you." He raised his eyes and looked at her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not make any decision, she sat down. On that, a man from his companions got up and said. "O Allah's Apostle! If you are not in need of this woman, then marry her to me." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you have anything to offer her?" He replied. "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go to your family and see if you can find something.' The man went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have not found anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Try to find something, even if it is an iron ring.'' He went again and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not even an iron ring, but I have this waist sheet of mine." The man had no upper garment, so he intended to give her, half his waist sheet. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ''What would she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing of it over her body, and if she wears it, you will have nothing over your body." So that man sat for a long period and then got up, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him going away, so he ordered somebody to call him. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ asked him, " How much of the Qur'an do you know?" He replied, "I know such Surat and such Surat and such Surat," and went on counting it, The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you recite it by heart?" he replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go, I have married this lady to you for the amount of the Qur'an you know by heart." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5030)

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ جِئْتُ لِأَهَبَ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَعَّدَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْضِ فِيهَا شَيْئًا جَلَسَتْ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا قَالَ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ «انْظُرْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ لَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ» فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُوَلِّيًا « فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَدُعِيَ» فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ «مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟» قَالَ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبٍ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you. When she stood for a long time, a man got up and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: Have you anything to give her as dower ? He replied: I have nothing by this lower garment of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you give your lower garment, you will sit while you have no lower garment. So look for something else. He said: I do not find anything. He said: Look for something, even though it should be an iron ring. The man sought it but found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know anything from the Qur'an ? He said: Yes, I know surah so and so, which he named. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2111)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ إِزَارِي هَذَا فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا» قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا قَالَ «الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

"I was among the people with the Prophet when a woman stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself in marriage to you, so see what you think of her.' He remained silent and the Prophet did not give any answer. Then she stood up (again) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself in marriage to you, so see what you think of her.' A man stood up and said: 'Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Do you have anything?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Go and look, even if it is just an iron ring.' So he went and looked then he came and said: 'I could not find anything, not even an iron ring.' He said: 'Have you memorized anything of the Qur'an?' He said: 'Yes, Surah such-and-such and Surah such-and-such.' He said: 'I will marry you to her on the basis of what you have memorized of the Qur'an.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3280)

سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَفِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَسَكَتَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِشَيْءٍ ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «هَلْ مَعَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ شَيْئًا» فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ» فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ «هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ «قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»

A lady came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have come to you to offer myself to you." He raised his eyes and looked at her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not make any decision, she sat down. On that, a man from his companions got up and said. "O Allah's Apostle! If you are not in need of this woman, then marry her to me." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you have anything to offer her?" He replied. "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Go to your family and see if you can find something.' The man went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have not found anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Try to find something, even if it is an iron ring.'' He went again and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not even an iron ring, but I have this waist sheet of mine." The man had no upper garment, so he intended to give her, half his waist sheet. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ''What would she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing of it over her body, and if she wears it, you will have nothing over your body." So that man sat for a long period and then got up, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him going away, so he ordered somebody to call him. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ asked him, " How much of the Qur'an do you know?" He replied, "I know such Surat and such Surat and such Surat," and went on counting it, The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you recite it by heart?" he replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go, I have married this lady to you for the amount of the Qur'an you know by heart." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5030)

[AI] A man came to Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was at Arafah and said, "O Commander of the Faithful, I have come from Kufa and left a man there who recites the Quran by heart." Umar became angry and his face turned red. He said, "Who is he?" The man replied, "Abdullah ibn Mas'ud." Umar's anger subsided and he returned to his normal state. Then he said, "By Allah, I do not know of anyone more deserving of this than him. Let me tell you a story. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to consult Abu Bakr in the matters concerning the Muslims. One night, the Prophet, ﷺ , stayed up late with Abu Bakr and I was with them. The Prophet, ﷺ , then left and we went with him. We saw a man standing and praying in the mosque. The Prophet, ﷺ , stood and listened to his recitation. When we could not recognize the man, the Prophet, ﷺ , said, "Whoever wants to recite the Quran with the same melody it was revealed with, let him read it in the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd, then the man started supplicating and the Prophet, ﷺ , said to him, 'Ask, and you shall be given.'" Umar then said, "I said to myself, I will go to the man tomorrow and give him the glad tidings." So I went to him to give him the news, but I found that Abu Bakr had already preceded me and informed him. By Allah, I have never been able to surpass Abu Bakr in goodness, except that he always precedes me in it."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عُمَرَ ؓ وَهُوَ بِعَرَفَةَ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ جِئْتُ مِنَ الْكُوفَةِ وَتَرَكْتُ بِهَا رَجُلًا يُمْلِي الْمَصَاحِفَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبِهِ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ عُمَرُ وَانْتَفَخَ حَتَّى كَادَ يَمْلَأُ مَا بَيْنَ شُعْبَتَيِ الرَّجُلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ مَنْ هُوَ؟ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَمَا زَالَ يُطْفَأُ وَيَسِيرُ الْغَضَبُ حَتَّى عَادَ إِلَى حَالِهِ الَّتِي كَانَ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ وَاللهِ مَا أَعْلَمُ بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ هُوَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ مِنْهُ سَأُحَدِّثُكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَزَالُ يَسْمُرُ فِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَأَنَّهُ سَمَرَ عِنْدَهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَرَجْنَا نَمْشِي مَعَهُ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَمِعُ قِرَاءَتَهُ فَلَمَّا أَعْيَانَا أَنْ نَعْرِفَ مَنِ الرَّجُلُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ غَضًّا كَمَا أُنْزِلَ فَلْيَقْرَأْهُ عَلَى قِرَاءَةِ ابْنِ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ يَدْعُو فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَهُ سَلَ تُعْطَهْ قَالَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ فَقُلْتُ لَأَغْدُوَنَّ إِلَيْهِ فَلَأُبَشِّرَنَّهُ قَالَ فَغَدَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ لِأُبَشِّرَهُ فَوَجَدْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ قَدْ سَبَقَنِي إِلَيْهِ فَبَشَّرَهُ فَوَاللهِ مَا سَابَقْتُهُ إِلَى خَيْرِ قَطُّ إِلَّا سَبَقَنِي إِلَيْهِ هَكَذَا

Abu Bakr sent for me owing to the large number of casualties in the battle of Al-Yamama, while ʿUmar was sitting with him. Abu Bakr said (to me), ʿUmar has come to my and said, 'A great number of Qaris of the Holy Qur'an were killed on the day of the battle of Al-Yamama, and I am afraid that the casualties among the Qaris of the Qur'an may increase on other battle-fields whereby a large part of the Qur'an may be lost. Therefore I consider it advisable that you (Abu Bakr) should have the Qur'an collected.' I said, 'How dare I do something which Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?' ʿUmar said, By Allah, it is something beneficial.' ʿUmar kept on pressing me for that till Allah opened my chest for that for which He had opened the chest of ʿUmar and I had in that matter, the same opinion as ʿUmar had." Abu Bakr then said to me (Zaid), "You are a wise young man and we do not have any suspicion about you, and you used to write the Divine Inspiration for Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So you should search for the fragmentary scripts of the Qur'an and collect it (in one Book)." Zaid further said: By Allah, if Abu Bakr had ordered me to shift a mountain among the mountains from one place to another it would not have been heavier for me than this ordering me to collect the Qur'an. Then I said (to ʿUmar and Abu Bakr), "How can you do something which Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?" Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, it is something beneficial." Zaid added: So he (Abu Bakr) kept on pressing me for that until Allah opened my chest for that for which He had opened the chests of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, and I had in that matter, the same opinion as theirs. So I started compiling the Qur'an by collecting it from the leafless stalks of the date-palm tree and from the pieces of leather and hides and from the stones, and from the chests of men (who had memorized the Qur'an). I found the last verses of Sirat-at-Tauba: ("Verily there has come unto you an Apostle (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves--' (9.128-129) ) from Khuzaʿima or Abi Khuzaʿima and I added to it the rest of the Sura. The manuscripts of the Qur'an remained with Abu Bakr till Allah took him unto Him. Then it remained with ʿUmar till Allah took him unto Him, and then with Hafsa bint ʿUmar. بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَقْتَلَ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ وَعِنْدَهُ عُمَرُ ؓ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ أَتَانِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْقَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ يَوْمَ الْيَمَامَةِ بِقُرَّاءِ الْقُرْآنِ وَإِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ يَسْتَحِرَّ الْقَتْلُ بِقُرَّاءِ الْقُرْآنِ فِي الْمَوَاطِنِ كُلِّهَا فَيَذْهَبَ قُرْآنٌ كَثِيرٌ وَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَأْمُرَ بِجَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ أَفْعَلُ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ عُمَرُ يُرَاجِعُنِي فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ لَهُ صَدْرَ عُمَرَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِي ذَلِكَ الَّذِي رَأَى عُمَرُ قَالَ زَيْدٌ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَإِنَّكَ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ عَاقِلٌ لَا نَتَّهِمُكَ قَدْ كُنْتَ تَكْتُبُ الْوَحْيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَتَبَّعِ الْقُرْآنَ فَاجْمَعْهُ قَالَ زَيْدٌ فَوَاللهِ لَوْ كَلَّفَنِي بِنَقْلِ جَبَلٍ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ مَا كَانَ بِأَثْقَلَ عَلَيَّ مِمَّا كَلَّفَنِي مِنْ جَمْعِ الْقُرْآنِ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ تَفْعَلَانِ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيْرٌ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُرَاجِعُنِي فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِلَّذِي شَرَحَ لَهُ اللهُ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِي ذَلِكَ الَّذِي رَأَيَا قَالَ فَتَتَبَّعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ أَجْمَعُهُ مِنَ الْعُسُبِ وَالرِّقَاعِ وَاللِّخَافِ وَصُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ فَوَجَدْتُ آخِرَ سُورَةِ التَّوْبَةِ {لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ} [التوبة 128] إِلَى آخِرِ السُّورَةِ مَعَ خُزَيْمَةَ أَوْ أَبِي خُزَيْمَةَ فَأَلْحَقْتُهَا فِي السُّورَةِ وَكَانَتِ الصُّحُفُ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَيَاتَهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حَيَاتَهُ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ

[AI] I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam. Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah, make something for my people that they can embrace Islam with from their wealth." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did so and appointed me to collect it from them. Abu Bakr also appointed me, then Umar appointed me. Saad was one of the people of Sura, and I spoke to my people about honey and said to them, "It is a form of charity because there is no good in a fruit that is not purified." They asked, "How much?" I said, "One tenth." So I took one tenth from them and went to Umar bin Khattab and informed him. Umar took it and sold it, and then placed its price in the charities of the Muslims.

قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَسْلَمْتُ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اجْعَلْ لِقَوْمِي مَا أَسْلَمُوا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ فَفَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَاسْتَعْمَلَنِي عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ اسْتَعْمَلَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ قَالَ وَكَانَ سَعْدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ السُّرَاةِ قَالَ فَكَلَّمْتُ قَوْمِي فِي الْعَسَلِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ زَكَاةٌ فَإِنَّهُ لَا خَيْرَ فِي ثَمَرَةٍ لَا تُزَكَّى فَقَالُوا كَمْ قَالَ؟ فَقُلْتُ الْعُشْرُ فَأَخَذْتُ مِنْهُمُ الْعُشْرَ فَأَتَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا كَانَ قَالَ فَقَبَضَهُ عُمَرُ ؓ فَبَاعَهُ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ ثَمَنَهُ فِي صَدَقَاتِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ 7463 وَأَخْبَرَنَاهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ أَبُو ضَمْرَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ وَرَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذُبَابٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ فِي الْعَسَلِ وَرَوَاهُ الصَّلْتُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ عِيَاضٍ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ أَبِي ذُبَابٍ عَنْ مُنِيرٍ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approached by a woman who said, "Oh Messenger of Allah, I have given myself to you." So she stood up for a long time. Then a man stood up and said, "Oh Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Do you have something to give her as a mahr (bridal gift)?" He replied, "I have nothing except for my waist wrapper (izār)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you marry her, you will sit without a waist wrapper, so find something." He said, "I cannot find anything." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Find something, even if it is a ring made of iron." He searched but did not find anything. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anything from the Qur'an?" He replied, "Yes, I have such and such surah and such and such for recitation." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "I have married her to you with what you have from the Qur'an."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ؟ فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّكَ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِزَارَكَ جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَالْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

[AI] A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, a woman has donated herself to Allah and His Messenger." He said, "I have no need for women today." A man from the weak Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." He said, "What do you have?" He said, "I have nothing." The Prophet said, "Give her a garment." He said, "I do not find one." He said, "Give her even a ring made of iron." He said, "I do not find one." He said, "Do you have anything from the Quran?" He said, "Yes, this and that." The Prophet said, "Then I have married her to you with what you have from the Quran." This hadith was narrated by Khalaf, and in the narration of Abu Ar-Rabi', it was said, "We have married her to you." This was narrated by Al-Bukhari from Ibn Abi Maryam from Abu Ghasan from Abu Hazim from Sahl. He said in the hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I have married her to you with what you have from the Quran." The narration of Al-Hussain bin Muhammad from Abu Ghasan from Muhammad bin Matarif said in the hadith, "I have married her to you with what you have from the Quran." The majority have narrated it with the wording of marriage, except for the rare narration of Shadd. The group is more reliable in preserving than the individual. And Allah knows best. And some of our companions have used evidence in this from what we have narrated in the Book of Hajj, in the established hadith from Jafar bin Muhammad from his father from Jabir bin Abdullah from the Prophet ﷺ in the story of the Farewell Pilgrimage. He said, "Fear Allah in regards to women, for indeed you have taken them under the trust of Allah and you have made lawful their private parts with the word of Allah." Our companions said that the word of Allah refers to marriage and the act of marrying, which are mentioned in the Quran. And Allah knows best.

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ امْرَأَةً وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ فَقَالَ مَا لِي فِي النِّسَاءِ حَاجَةٌ الْيَوْمَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ ضُعَفَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ مَاذَا عِنْدَكَ؟ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَيْءٌ قَالَ أَعْطِهَا ثَوْبًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ أَعْطِهَا وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ مَا عِنْدَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ؟ قَالَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا عِنْدَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هَذَا حَدِيثُ خَلَفٍ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ أَبِي غَسَّانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلٍ قَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَمْلَكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ وَرَوَاهُ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِي غَسَّانَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُطَرِّفٍ فَقَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَرِوَايَةُ الْجُمْهُورِ عَلَى لَفْظِ التَّزْوِيجِ إِلَّا رِوَايَةَ الشَّاذِّ مِنْهَا وَالْجَمَاعَةُ أَوْلَى بِالْحِفْظِ مِنَ الْوَاحِدِ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ وَاسْتَدَلَّ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا فِي ذَلِكَ بِمَا رَوَيْنَا فِي كِتَابِ الْحَجِّ فِي الْحَدِيثِ الثَّابِتِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي قِصَّةِ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ قَالَ فَاتَّقُوا اللهَ فِي النِّسَاءِ فَإِنَّكُمْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُنَّ بِأَمَانَةِ اللهِ وَاسْتَحْلَلْتُمْ فُرُوجَهُنَّ بِكَلِمَةِ اللهِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُنَا وَهِيَ كَلِمَةُ النِّكَاحِ وَالتَّزْوِيجِ اللَّذَيْنِ وَرَدَ بِهِمَا الْقُرْآنُ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you. When she stood for a long time, a man got up and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: Have you anything to give her as dower ? He replied: I have nothing by this lower garment of mine. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you give your lower garment, you will sit while you have no lower garment. So look for something else. He said: I do not find anything. He said: Look for something, even though it should be an iron ring. The man sought it but found nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know anything from the Qur'an ? He said: Yes, I know surah so and so, which he named. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have given you her in marriage for the part of the Qur'an which you know. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2111)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ؟ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا قَالَ وَاللهِ مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا قَالَ الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

[AI] He heard Sahl bin Saad Al-Saadi saying: I was among the people in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ when a woman stood up and said, "I have offered myself to you, so what is your opinion?" A man from the people stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." He did not respond to him. Then another woman stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself to you, so what is your opinion?" The man stood up again and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me." Then a third woman stood up and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anything?" He replied, "No." He said, "Go and search, even if it is a ring made of iron." He went and searched but did not find anything. He said, "Go and search, even if it is for a verse from the Quran." He said, "Yes, Surah so and so, and Surah so and so." He said, "Go, for I have married her to you based on what you have from the Quran, as the words of both of them are equal."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ ؓ يَقُولُ كُنْتُ فِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّهَا وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا ثُمَّ قَامَتِ الثَّالِثَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِهِمَا سَوَاءٌ

[AI] A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have given myself to you." So she stood up for a long time. Then a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you do not need her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you have anything that you can give her as a dowry?" He said, "I only have my waistcloth." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you give it to her, you will have to sit without a waistcloth. So seek something else." He said, "I cannot find anything." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Seek something, even if it is an iron ring." So he searched but did not find anything. Then the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have anything from the Quran?" He said, "Yes, I have Surah So-and-So and Surah So-and-So." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have married her to you with what you have from the Quran."

أَنَّ امْرَأَةً أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ؟ فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا قَالَ الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

[AI] How do you say about a man who finds another man with his wife, should he kill him and you kill him or what should he do? He said, ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. So Asim came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man finds another man with his wife, should he kill him and you kill him or what should he do?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked the questions and criticized them. So Uwaimir said, "By Allah, I will not stop until I ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that." So Uwaimir came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man finds another man with his wife, should he kill him and you kill him or what should he do?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has revealed the Quran concerning you and your companion. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded both of them to curse each other with what Allah mentioned in His Book." So he said, "So she cursed him." Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, if I divorce her, I have wronged her." He said, "So he divorced her, and it was a Sunnah for those who came after them from among the cursing parties." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Be cautious, for if she comes with a child called As'ham, it should be attributed to her. It will darken the two eyes, make the legs skinny, and I do not think Uwaimir except that he will be speaking the truth about her. And if she comes with a child called Uhaymir, it will be as if he is a free-roaming bull and I do not think Uwaimir except that he will be lying about her." He said, "She came with him with a description similar to the one the Messenger of Allah ﷺ attributed to him due to Uwaimir's testimony." He said, "After that, he was traced back to his mother."

كَيْفَ تَقُولُ فِي رَجُلٍ وَجَدَ مَعَ امْرَأَتِهِ رَجُلًا أَيَقْتُلُهُ فَتَقْتُلُونَهُ أَمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَ سَلْ لي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَأَتَى عَاصِمٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَجُلٌ وَجَدَ مَعَ امْرَأَتِهِ رَجُلًا أَيَقْتُلُهُ فَتَقْتُلُونَهُ أَمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ؟ فَكَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَسَائِلَ فَسَأَلَهُ عُوَيْمِرٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ كَرِهَ الْمَسَائِلَ وَعَابَهَا فَقَالَ عُوَيْمِرٌ وَاللهِ لَا أَنْتَهِي حَتَّى أَسْأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَجَاءَ عُوَيْمِرٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَجُلٌ وَجَدَ مَعَ امْرَأَتِهِ رَجُلًا أَيَقْتُلُهُ فَتَقْتُلُونَهُ أَمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ الْقُرْآنَ فِيكَ وَفِي صَاحِبَتِكَ فَأَمَرَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْمُلَاعَنَةِ بِمَا سَمَّى اللهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ قَالَ فَلَاعَنَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ حَبَسْتُهَا فَقَدْ ظَلَمْتُهَا قَالَ فَطَلَّقَهَا وَكَانَتْ بَعْدُ سُنَّةً لِمَنْ كَانَ بَعْدَهُمَا مِنَ الْمُتَلَاعِنَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَبْصِرُوا فَإِنْ جَاءَتْ بِهِ أَسْحَمَ أَدْعَجَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ عَظِيمَ الْأَلْيَتَيْنِ خَدَلَّجَ السَّاقَيْنِ فَلَا أَحْسَبُ عُوَيْمِرًا إِلَّا وقَدْ صَدَقَ عَلَيْهَا وَإِنْ جَاءَتْ بِهِ أُحَيْمِرَ كَأَنَّهُ وَحَرَةٌ فَلَا أَحْسَبُ عُوَيْمِرًا إِلَّا وَقَدْ كَذَبَ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ بِهِ عَلَى النَّعْتِ الَّذِي نَعَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ تَصْدِيقِ عُوَيْمِرٍ قَالَ فَكَانَ يُنْسَبُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لِأُمِّهِ

[AI] "A Bedouin man from the tribe of Banu Fazara came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Indeed, my wife has given birth to a dark-skinned boy.' The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'Do you have any camels?' He replied, 'Yes.' The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What are their colors?' He answered, 'Red.' The Prophet ﷺ then asked, 'Do any of them have white markings?' He replied, 'Yes, some of them have white markings.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Perhaps it is from the genes of one of them that the child inherited this.' The phrase 'perhaps it is from the genes of one of them' is a narration from Imam Shafi'i, and in the narration of Qutaiba, it mentions that a man from the tribe of Banu Fazara came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Perhaps it is from the genes of one of them.'"

أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ امْرَأَتِي وَلَدَتْ غُلَامًا أَسْوَدَ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ إِبِلٍ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَمَا أَلْوَانُهَا؟ قَالَ حُمْرٌ قَالَ هَلْ فِيهَا مِنْ أَوْرَقَ؟ قَالَ إِنَّ فِيهَا لَوُرْقًا قَالَ فَأَنَّى أَصَابَهَا ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ لَعَلَّهُ عِرْقٌ نَزَعَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَهَذَا لَعَلَّهُ نَزَعَهُ عِرْقٌ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الشَّافِعِيِّ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ قُتَيْبَةَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَالَ عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ نَزَعَهُ عِرْقٌ

[AI] Abdullah bin Sahl Al-Ansari and Muhaysah bin Masood went out to Khaybar, but they separated for their own needs. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed, and then Abdulrahman bin Sahl, Huwayshah, and Muhaysah bin Masood went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abdulrahman, the brother of the deceased, came forward to speak. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Hold on, hold on." Huwayshah and Muhaysah then spoke of the incident of Abdullah bin Sahl. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, "Do any of you swear by Allah that you saw the killer or his companion?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we were not present, and we did not witness." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then the Jews will clear you of guilt by taking fifty oaths from you." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how can we accept oaths from disbelievers?" The Prophet ﷺ then accepted their request.

أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ سَهْلٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ وَمُحَيِّصَةَ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ خَرَجَا إِلَى خَيْبَرَ فَتَفَرَّقَا لِحَاجَتِهِمَا فَقُتِلَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَهْلٍ فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَهْلٍ وَحُوَيِّصَةُ وَمُحَيِّصَةُ ابْنَا مَسْعُودٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَهَبَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ أَخُو الْمَقْتُولِ لَيَتَكَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْكِبَرَ الْكِبَرَ فَتَكَلَّمَ حُوَيِّصَةُ وَمُحَيِّصَةُ فَذَكَرَا لَهُ شَأْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَيَحْلِفُ مِنْكُمْ خَمْسُونَ فَتَسْتَحِقُّونَ قَاتِلَكُمْ أَوْ صَاحِبَكُمْ؟ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَمْ نَحْضُرْ وَلَمْ نَشْهَدْ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَتُبْرِئُكُمْ يَهُودُ بِخَمْسِينَ يَمِينًا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نَقْبَلُ أَيْمَانَ قَوْمٍ كُفَّارٍ؟ قَالَ فَعَقَلَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ

The first to speak on Divine decree in al-Basrah was Maʿbad al Juhani. I and Humaid b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Himyari proceeded to perform Hajj or ʿUmrah. We said : would that we meet any of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that we could ask him about what they say with regard to divine decree. So Allah helped us to meet ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar who was entering the mosque. So I and my companion surrounded him, and I thought that my companion would entrust me the task of speaking to him. Then I said : Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, there appeared on our side some people who recite the Qur'an and are engaged in the hair-splitting of knowledge. They conceive that there is no Divine decree and everything happens freely without predestination. He said : When you meet those people, tell them that I am free from them, and they are free from me. By Him by Whom swears ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar, if one of them has gold equivalent to Uhud and he spends it, Allah will not accept it from him until he believes in Divine decree. He then said : ‘Umar b. Khattab transmitted to me a tradition, saying : One day when we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a man with very white clothing and very black hair came up to us. No mark of travel was visible on him, and we did not recognize him. Sitting down beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, leaning his knees against his and placing his hands on his thighs, he said : tell me, Muhammad, about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said : Islam means that you should testify that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle, that you should observe prayer, pay Zakat, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the house (i.e., Kaʿbah), If you have the means to go. He said : You have spoken the truth. We were surprised at his questioning him and then declaring that he spoke the truth. He said : Now tell me about faith. He replied : It means that you should believe in Allah, his angels, his Books, his Apostles and the last day, and that you should believe in the decreeing both of good and evil. He said : You have spoken the truth. He said : now tell me about doing good (ihsan). He replied: It means that you should worship Allah as though you are seeing him; if you are not seeing him, he is seeing you. He said: Now tell me about the hour. He replied : The one who is asked about it is no better informed than the one who is asking. He said : Then tell me about its signs. He replied : That a maidservant should beget her mistress, and that you should see barefooted, naked, poor men and shepherds exalting themselves in buildings. ‘Umar said : He then went away, and I waited for three days, then he said : Do you know who the questioner was, ʿUmar? I replied : Allah and his Apostle know best. He said : He was Gabriel who came to you to teach you your religion. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4695)

فِي الْقَدَرِ فِي الْبَصْرَةِ مَعْبَدٌ الْجُهَنِيُّ فَانْطَلَقْنَا حُجَّاجًا أَنَا وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا قُلْنَا لَوْ لَقِينَا بَعْضَ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَمَّا يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمُ فِي الْقَدَرِ قَالَ فَوَافَقْنَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَاكْتَنَفْتُهُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبِي أَحَدُنَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ قَالَ يَحْيَى فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ صَاحِبِي يَكِلُ الْكَلَامَ إِلِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّهُ ظَهَرَ قِبَلَنَا نَاسٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَعْرِفُونَ الْعِلْمَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنْ لَا قَدَرَ إِنَّمَا الْأَمْرُ أُنُفٌ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمْ أُولَئِكَ فَأَخْبِرُوهُمْ أَنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْهُمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ مِنِّي بَرَاءٌ وَالَّذِي يَحْلِفُ بِهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِأَحَدِهِمْ مِثْلَ أُحُدٍ ذَهَبًا فَأَنْفَقَهُ مَا قَبِلَهُ اللهُ ﷻ مِنْهُ حَتَّى يُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذْ طَلَعَ رَجُلٌ شَدِيدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعْرِ لَا يُرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ السَّفَرِ وَلَا نَعْرِفُهُ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَهُ إِلَى رُكْبَتِهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ مَا الْإِسْلَامُ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْإِسْلَامُ أَنَ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةَ وَتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ السَّبِيلَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ عُمَرُ عَجِبْنَا لَهُ يَسْأَلُهُ وَيُصَدِّقُهُ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْإِيمَانِ مَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ فَقَالَ الْإِيمَانُ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَالْقَدَرِ كُلِّهِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ فَقَالَ صَدَقْتَ فَقَالَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْإِحْسَانِ فَقَالَ الْإِحْسَانُ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ قَالَ فَحَدِّثْنِي عَنِ السَّاعَةِ مَتَى السَّاعَةُ؟ قَالَ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِهَا مِنَ السَّائِلِ قَالَ فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ أَمَارَتِهَا قَالَ أَنْ تَلِدَ الْأَمَةُ رَبَّتَهَا وَأَنْ تَرَى الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ رِعَاءَ الشَّاءِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبِنَاءِ ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ فَلَبِثْتُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا عُمَرُ مَا تَدْرِي مَنِ السَّائِلُ ؟ قُلْتُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ ذَاكَ جِبْرَئِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَتَاكُمْ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ دِينَكُمْ 20872 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ أنبأ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ أنبأ كَهْمَسٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Whoever frees a portion of a slave or a share in a partnership, then he will have from that slave or partnership an amount of wealth equal to the value of justice. He will be considered a free person." He said, "I do not know if this is a hadith from the Prophet, ﷺ , or something that Nafi' said. If it is not something that Nafi' said, then he has freed what he has freed." They have reported it in Sahih like this, and it contains an apparent indication that he was unsure about it. Malik ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, confirmed it as a hadith from the Prophet, ﷺ , so the ruling is in accordance with his view. As for the preference of Malik's memorization, it is with the majority of the people of hadith, as Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said. 21355 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq informed us, Isma'il ibn Ishaq informed us, 'Ali ibn Al-Madinri said, "Abdur-Rahman ibn Mahdi would not give precedence to anyone over Malik." 21356 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, I heard Abu Al-Hasan Al-'Anazi say, I heard 'Uthman ibn Sa'id Ad-Darimi say, "I asked Yahya ibn Ma'in, 'Is Malik more beloved to you than Nafi' or 'Ubaidullah ibn 'Umar?' He said, 'Malik.' I said, 'And what about Ayub As-Sakhtiani?' He said, 'Malik.'" 21357 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Muhammad ibn 'Ukht ibn Abu 'Awana informed us, my maternal uncle informed me, Al-Maimuni said, "I heard Yahya ibn Ma'in and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, both of them, say, 'Malik was one of the most trustworthy people in his hadith.'" Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, "O Abu Al-Hasan, it does not matter if you do not ask about a man who narrates from Malik, especially if he is from Madinah." 21358 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, I heard Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad Al-Hairi say, I heard Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad Al-Qabani say, I heard 'Ubaidullah ibn 'Umar Al-Qawariri say, 'I heard Hammad ibn Zaid say, 'I heard Ayyub As-Sakhtiani say, "Malik had a special chain with Nafi' during his lifetime.'" 21359 Abu Al-Husayn Ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan informed us in Baghdad, 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far told us, Ya'qub ibn Sufyan informed me, Muhammad ibn Abi Ruqayn informed me, Ibn Wahb informed me, Malik said, "Yahya ibn Sa'id asked me to compile one hundred hadiths from the hadiths of Ibn Shihab and select them for him, so I wrote those hadiths for him until I filled the book and explained them to him." Malik said, "And a man said, 'I used to learn from him until the day he died. He would come to me and ask me questions.' As for the concurrence of the ones who agreed with Malik on this addition..."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَعْتَقَ نَصِيبًا مِنْ عَبْدٍ أَوْ شِرْكًا كَانَ لَهُ فِي عَبْدٍ فَكَانَ لَهُ مِنَ الْمَالِ مَا يَبْلُغُ ثَمَنَهُ بِقِيمَةِ الْعَدْلِ فَهُوَ عَتِيقٌ قَالَ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَهُوَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ؟ أَوْ شَيْءٌ قَالَهُ نَافِعٌ وَإِلَّا فَقَدْ عَتَقَ مِنْهُ مَا عَتَقَ ؟ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ هَكَذَا وَفِيهِ دَلَالَةٌ ظَاهِرَةٌ عَلَى أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَشُكُّ فِيهِ وَمَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ أَثْبَتَهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَالْحُكْمُ لَهُ دُونَهُ وَأَمَّا فَضْلُ حِفْظِ مَالِكٍ فَهُوَ عِنْدَ جَمَاعَةِ أَهْلِ الْحَدِيثِ كَمَا قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ 21355 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أَنْبَأَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَنْبَأَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ قَالَ كَانَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ لَا يُقَدِّمُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ أَحَدًا 21356 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْعَنَزِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيَّ يَقُولُ قُلْتُ لِيَحْيَى بْنِ مَعِينٍ مَالِكٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ فِي نَافِعٍ أَوْ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ؟ قَالَ مَالِكٌ قُلْتُ فَأَيُّوبُ السَّخْتِيَانِيُّ؟ قَالَ مَالِكٌ 21357 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أَنْبَأَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ابْنُ أُخْتِ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ حَدَّثَنِي خَالِي ثنا الْمَيْمُونِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مَعِينٍ وَأَحْمَدَ بْنَ حَنْبَلٍ جَمِيعًا يَقُولَانِ كَانَ مَالِكٌ مِنْ أَثْبَتِ النَّاسِ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ لَا تُبَالِ أَنْ لَا تَسْأَلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ مَالِكٌ وَلَا سِيَّمَا مَدَنِيٌّ 21358 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ أَحْمَدَ الْحِيرِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَبَّانِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ حَمَّادَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِيَّ يَقُولُ لَقَدْ كَانَتْ لِمَالِكٍ حَلْقَةٌ فِي حَيَاةِ نَافِعٍ 21359 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ أَنْبَأَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي رُكَيْنٍ أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ قَالَ قَالَ لِي يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ اكْتُبْ لِي مِائَةَ حَدِيثٍ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ انْتَقِهَا لِي وَأَعْطَانِي رَقًّا قَدِيمًا قَدِ اصْفَرَّ قَالَ فَكَتَبْتُ لَهُ تِلْكَ الْأَحَادِيثَ حَتَّى مَلَأْتُهُ وَبَيَّنْتُهُ لَهُ قَالَ مَالِكٌ وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ كُنْتُ أَتَعَلَّمُ مِنْهُ مَا مَاتَ حَتَّى كَانَ يَجِيئُنِي فَيَسْتَفْتِينِي وَأَمَّا مُوَافَقَةُ مَنْ وَافَقَ مَالِكًا عَلَى هَذِهِ الزِّيَادَةِ

"عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ فَوَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَهُ فَصَمَتَ، ثُمَّ عَرَضَتْ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ، فَصَمَتَ، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهَا قَائِمَةً مَليّا تَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا علَيْهِ، وَهُوَ صَامِتٌ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ، أَحْسَبُهُ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ: يَارَسُولَ الله إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا، قَالَ: لَكَ شىْءٌ؟ قَالَ: لاَ وَالله يَارَسُولَ الله، قَالَ: اذْهَبْ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدِ، فَذَهَبَ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ: وَالله مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ ثَوْبِى هَذَا اشْقُقْهُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ ، مَا فِى ثَوْبِكَ فَضْلًا (*) عَنْكَ، فَهَلْ تَقْرَأُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: مَاذَا؟ قَالَ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَسُورَةُ كَذَا وَكَذَا، قَالَ: فَقَدْ أَمْلَكْتُكَهَا بما مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، فَرَأيْتُهُ يَمْضِى وَهِىَ تَتْبَعُهُ".
