3. The Book of Menstruation
(on the authority of his father) ʿAisha said: "Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to fondle anyone of us during her periods (menses), he used to order her to put on an Izar and start fondling her." ʿAisha added, "None of you could control his sexual desires as the Prophet ﷺ could."
When ever Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to fondle any of his wives during the periods (menses), he used to ask her to wear an Izar.
3.2 Lying down with a menstruating woman under a single cover
Um-Salama said, "I got my menses while I was lying with the Prophet ﷺ under a woolen sheet. So I slipped away, took the clothes for menses and put them on. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Have you got your menses?' I replied, 'Yes.' Then he called me and took me with him under the woolen sheet." Um Salama further said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to kiss me while he was fasting. The Prophet ﷺ and I used to take the bath of Janaba from a single pot."

3.3 It is permissible for a menstruating woman to wash her husband’s head, and comb his hair; her leftovers are pure (tahir); and regarding reclining in her lap and reciting Qur’an
(the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to let his head in (the house) while he was in the mosque and I would comb and oil his hair. When in Iʿtikaf he used not to enter the house except for a need.
The Prophet ﷺ used to embrace me during my menses. He also used to put his head out of the mosque while he was in Iʿtikaf, and I would wash it during my menses.
The Prophet ﷺ used to lean on my lap and recite Qur'an while I was in menses.
3.4 Madhi (prostatic fluid)
I used to get emotional urethral discharges frequently and felt shy to ask Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. So I requested Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad to ask (the Prophet ﷺ ) about it. Al-Miqdad asked him and he replied, "One has to perform ablution (after it)."
3.6 It is permissible for one who is junub to sleep, but it is recommended for him to perform wudu’, and wash his private parts if he wants to eat, drink, sleep, or have intercourse
Whenever the Prophet ﷺ intended to sleep while he was Junub, he used to wash his private parts and perform ablution like that for the prayer.
I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ "Can any one of us sleep while he is Junub?" He replied, "Yes, if he performs ablution, he can sleep while he is Junub."
ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab told Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "I became Junub at night." Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Perform ablution after washing your private parts and then sleep."
The Prophet ﷺ used to visit all his wives in one night and he had nine wives at that time.
3.7 Women are obliged to perform ghusl if they emit fluid
Um-Sulaim came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Verily, Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. Is it necessary for a woman to take a bath after she has a wet dream (nocturnal sexual discharge?) The Prophet replied, "Yes, if she notices a discharge." Um Salama, then covered her face and asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Does a woman get a discharge?" He replied, "Yes, let your right hand be in dust (An Arabic expression you say to a person when you contradict his statement meaning "you will not achieve goodness"), and that is why the son resembles his mother."
3.9 Description of ghusl in the case of janabah (sexual impurity)
Whenever the Prophet ﷺ took a bath after Janaba he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that he would put his fingers in water and move the roots of his hair with them, and then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body.
I placed water for the bath of the Prophet ﷺ and he poured water with his right hand on his left and washed them. Then he washed his private parts and rubbed his hands on the ground, washed them with water, rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it and blowing it out, washed his face and poured water on his head. He withdrew from that place and washed his feet. A piece of cloth (towel) was given to him but he did not use it.
Whenever the Prophet ﷺ took the bath of Janaba (sexual relation or wet dream) he asked for the Hilab or some other scent. He used to take it in his hand, rub it first over the right side of his head and then over the left and then rub the middle of his head with both hands.
3.10 The amount of water with which it is recommended to perform ghusl in the case of janabah; a man and woman washing from a single vessel; one of them washing with the left-over water of the other
The Prophet ﷺ and I used to take a bath from a single pot called 'Faraq'.
ʿAisha's brother and I went to ʿAisha and he asked her about the bath of the Prophet. She brought a pot containing about a Saʿ of water and took a bath and poured it over her head and at that time there was a screen between her and us.
The Prophet ﷺ used to take a bath with one Saʿ up to five Mudds (1 Saʿ = [??] Mudds) of water and used to perform ablution with one Mudd of water.
3.11 It is recommended to pour water over the head, and elsewhere, three times
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for me, I pour water three times on my head." And he pointed with both his hands.
While I and my father were with Jabir bin ʿAbdullah, some people asked him about taking a bath. He replied, "A Saʿ of water is sufficient for you." A man said, "A Saʿ is not sufficient for me." Jabir said, "A Saʿ was sufficient for one who had more hair than you and was better than you (meaning the Prophet)." And then Jabir (put on) his garment and led the prayer.
3.13 It is recommended for the woman who is performing ghusl following menses to apply a piece of cloth scented with musk to the site of the bleeding
A woman asked the Prophet ﷺ about the bath which is taken after finishing from the menses. The Prophet ﷺ told her what to do and said, "Purify yourself with a piece of cloth scented with musk." The woman asked, "How shall I purify myself with it" He said, "Subhan Allah! Purify yourself (with it)." I pulled her to myself and said, "Rub the place soiled with blood with it."
3.14 The ghusl and the prayer of a woman who is suffering prolonged vaginal bleeding (istihadah)
Fatima bint Abi Hubaish came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ I get persistent bleeding from the uterus and do not become clean. Shall I give up my prayers?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, because it is from a blood vessel and not the menses. So when your real menses begins give up your prayers and when it has finished wash off the blood (take a bath) and offer your prayers." Hisham (the sub narrator) narrated that his father had also said, (the Prophet ﷺ told her): "Perform ablution for every prayer till the time of the next period comes."
(the wife of the Prophet) Um Habiba got bleeding in between the periods for seven years. She asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. He ordered her to take a bath (after the termination of actual periods) and added that it was (from) a blood vessel. So she used to take a bath for every prayer.
3.15 A menstruating woman is obliged to make up missed fasts but not prayers
A woman asked ʿAisha, "Should I offer the prayers that which I did not offer because of menses" ʿAisha said, "Are you from the Huraura' (a town in Iraq?) We were with the Prophet ﷺ and used to get our periods but he never ordered us to offer them (the Prayers missed during menses)." ʿAisha perhaps said, "We did not offer them."
3.16 Covering oneself with a garment and the like while performing ghusl
(the freed slave of Um Hani) Um Hani, the daughter of Abi Talib said, "I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of the conquest of Mecca and found him taking a bath and his daughter Fatima was screening him. I greeted him. He asked, 'Who is she?' I replied, 'I am Um Hani bint Abi Talib.' He said, 'Welcome! O Um Hani.' When he finished his bath he stood up and prayed eight rakʿat while wearing a single garment wrapped round his body and when he finished I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ! My brother has told me that he will kill a person whom I gave shelter and that person is so and so the son of Hubaira.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'We shelter the person whom you have sheltered.' " Um Hani added, "And that was before noon (Duha).

3.18 It is permissible to bathe naked when one is alone
The Prophet ﷺ said, 'The (people of) Bani Israel used to take bath naked (all together) looking at each other. The Prophet ﷺ Moses used to take a bath alone. They said, 'By Allah! Nothing prevents Moses from taking a bath with us except that he has a scrotal hernia.' So once Moses went out to take a bath and put his clothes over a stone and then that stone ran away with his clothes. Moses followed that stone saying, "My clothes, O stone! My clothes, O stone! till the people of Bani Israel saw him and said, 'By Allah, Moses has got no defect in his body. Moses took his clothes and began to beat the stone." Abu Huraira added, "By Allah! There are still six or seven marks present on the stone from that excessive beating."

3.19 Taking care to conceal one’s ʿawrah
While Messenger of Allah ﷺ was carrying stones (along) with the people of Mecca for (the building of) the Kaʿba wearing an Izar (waist-sheet cover), his uncle Al-ʿAbbas said to him, "O my nephew! (It would be better) if you take off your Izar and put it over your shoulders underneath the stones." So he took off his Izar and put it over his shoulders, but he fell unconscious and since then he had never been seen naked.

3.21 At the beginning of Islam, intercourse did not necessitate ghusl unless semen was emitted, then that was abrogated and ghusl becomes obligatory for intercourse
Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for a Ansari man who came with water dropping from his head. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perhaps we have forced you to hurry up, haven't we?" The Ansari replied, "Yes." Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said, "If you are forced to hurry up (during intercourse) or you do not discharge then ablution is due on you (This order was canceled later on, i.e. one has to take a bath).
I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a man who engages in sexual intercourse with his wife but does not discharge. He replied, "He should wash the parts which comes in contact with the private parts of the woman, perform ablution and then pray." (Abu ʿAbdullah said, "Taking a bath is safer and is the last order.")
I asked ʿUthman bin ʿAffan about a man who engaged in the sexual intercourse with his wife but did not discharge. ʿUthman replied, "He should perform ablution like that for the prayer after washing his private parts." ʿUthman added, "I heard that from Messenger of Allah ﷺ." I asked ʿAli bin Abi Talib, Az- Zubair bin Al-ʿAwwam, Talha bin 'Ubaidullah and Ubai bin Kaʿb and they gave the same reply. (Abu Aiyub said that he had heard that from Messenger of Allah ﷺ ) (This order was canceled later on so one has to take a bath. See, Hadith No. 180).

3.23 Performing wudu’ after eating something that has been touched by fire
Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate a piece of cooked mutton from the shoulder region and prayed without repeating ablution.
My father said, "I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ taking a piece of (cooked) mutton from the shoulder region and then he was called for prayer. He put his knife down and prayed without repeating ablution."

My uncle asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah' Apostle replied: "He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something."

The Prophet ﷺ saw a dead sheep which had been given in charity to a freed slave-girl of Maimuna, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ . The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why don't you get the benefit of its hide?" They said, "It is dead." He replied, "Only to eat (its meat) is illegal."
3.28 Tayammum
(the wife of the Prophet) We set out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys till we reached Al- Baida' or Dhatul-Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed there to search for it, and so did the people along with him. There was no water at that place, so the people went to Abu- Bakr As-Siddiq and said, "Don't you see what ʿAisha has done? She has made Allah's Apostle and the people stay where there is no water and they have no water with them." Abu Bakr came while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh, He said, to me: "You have detained Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people where there is no water and they have no water with them. So he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say and hit me on my flank with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain) but the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my thigh. Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up when dawn broke and there was no water. So Allah revealed the Divine Verses of Tayammum. So they all performed Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, "O the family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing of yours." Then the camel on which I was riding was caused to move from its place and the necklace was found beneath it.

Shaqiq said, "While I was sitting with ʿAbdullah and Abu Musa Al-Ashʿari, the latter asked the former, 'If a person becomes Junub and does not find water for one month, can he perform Tayammum and offer his prayer?' (He applied in the negative). Abu Musa said, 'What do you say about this verse from Sura "Al-Ma'ida": When you do not find water then perform Tayammum with clean earth? ʿAbdullah replied, 'If we allowed it then they would probably perform Tayammum with clean earth even if water were available but cold.' I said to Shaqiq, 'You then disliked to perform Tayammum because of this?' Shaqiq said, 'Yes.' (Shaqiq added), "Abu Musa said, 'Haven't you heard the statement of ʿAmmar to ʿUmar? He said: I was sent out by Messenger of Allah ﷺ for some job and I became Junub and could not find water so I rolled myself over the dust (clean earth) like an animal does, and when I told the Prophet ﷺ of that he said, 'Like this would have been sufficient.' The Prophet ﷺ (saying so) lightly stroked the earth with his hand once and blew it off, then passed his (left) hand over the back of his right hand or his (right) hand over the back of his left hand and then passed them over his face.' So ʿAbdullah said to Abu- Musa, 'Don't you know that ʿUmar was not satisfied with ʿAmmar's statement?' " Narrated Shaqiq: While I was with ʿAbdullah and Abu Musa, the latter said to the former, "Haven't you heard the statement of ʿAmmar to ʿUmar? He said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent you and me out and I became Junub and rolled myself in the dust (clean earth) (for Tayammum). When we came to Allah's Apostle I told him about it and he said, 'This would have been sufficient,' passing his hands over his face and the backs of his hands once only.' "

A man came to ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab and said, "I became Junub but no water was available." ʿAmmar bin Yasir said to ʿUmar, "Do you remember that you and I (became Junub while both of us) were together on a journey and you didn't pray but I rolled myself on the ground and prayed? I informed the Prophet ﷺ about it and he said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do like this.' The Prophet then stroked lightly the earth with his hands and then blew off the dust and passed his hands over his face and hands."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across me and I was Junub. He took my hand and I went along with him till he sat down I slipped away, went home and took a bath. When I came back, he was still sitting there. He then said to me, "O Abu Huraira! Where have you been?' I told him about it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Subhan Allah! O Abu Huraira!
