15. The Book of Pilgrimage (1/4)
A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What kind of clothes should a Muhrim wear?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a headcloak or leather socks except if he can find no slippers, he then may wear leather socks after cutting off what might cover the ankles. And he should not wear clothes which are scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of Perfumes) . "
I heard the Prophet ﷺ delivering a sermon at ʿArafat saying, "If a Muhrim does not find slippers, he could wear Khuffs (socks made from thick fabric or leather, but he has to cut short the Khuffs below the ankles), and if he does not find an Izar (a waist sheet for wrapping the lower half of the body) he could wear trousers."
Ya'la said to 'Umar, "Show me the Prophet ﷺ when he is being inspired Divinely." While the Prophet ﷺ was at Ji'rana (in the company of some of his Companions) a person came and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is your verdict regarding that person who assumes Ihram for 'Umra and is scented with perfume ?" The Prophet ﷺ kept quiet for a while and he was Divinely inspired (then). 'Umar beckoned Ya'la. So he came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shaded with sheet. Ya'la put his head in and saw that the face of Messenger of Allah was red and he was snoring. When the state of the Prophet ﷺ was over, he ﷺ asked, "Where is the person who asked about 'Umra?" Then that person was brought and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Wash the perfume off your body thrice and take off the cloak and do the same in 'Umra as you do in Hajj."
15.2 The Mawaqit of Hajj
Messenger of Allah ﷺ had fixed Dhul Hulaifa as the Miqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham; and Qarn Ul-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. So, these (above mentioned) are the Mawaqit for all those living at those places, and besides them for those who come through those places with the intention of performing Hajj and ʿUmra and whoever lives within these places should assume Ihram from his dwelling place, and similarly the people of Mecca can assume lhram from Mecca.
ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The people of Medina should assume lhram from Dhul-Hulaifa; the people of Sham from Al-Juhfa; and the people of Najd from Qarn." And ʿAbdullah added, "I was informed that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, 'The people of Yemen should assume Ihram from Yalamlam.' "
15.3 The Talbiyah, its description and timing
Talbiyah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Talbiya of Messenger of Allah ﷺ was :
labbayka Allāhumma labbayka, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayka, inna al-ḥamda wa-al-niʿmata laka wa-al-mulk, lā sharīka laka
(I respond to Your call O Allah, I respond to Your call, and I am obedient to Your orders, You have no partner, I respond to Your call. All the praises and blessings are for You, all the sovereignty is for You, and You have no partners with you.)
15.4 The command to the people of Al-Madinah to enter Ihram from the Masjid at Dhul-Hulaifah
I heard my father saying, "Never did Messenger of Allah ﷺ assume Ihram except at the Mosque, that is, at the Mosque of Dhul-Hulaifa.
15.5 Clarifying that it is better to enter Ihram when a person's mount sets off with him, heading towards Makkah, not straight after the two rak'ah
I asked ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar, "O Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman! I saw you doing four things which I never saw being done by anyone of you companions?" ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, "What are those, O Ibn Juraij?" I said, "I never saw you touching any corner of the Kaʿba except these (two) facing south (Yemen) and I saw you wearing shoes made of tanned leather and dyeing your hair with Hinna (a kind of red dye). I also noticed that whenever you were in Mecca, the people assume Ihram on seeing the new moon crescent (1st of Dhul-Hijja) while you did not assume the Ihlal (Ihram) -(Ihram is also called Ihlal which means 'Loud calling' because a Muhrim has to recite Talbiya aloud when assuming the state of Ihram) - till the 8th of Dhul-Hijja (Day of Tarwiya). ʿAbdullah replied, "Regarding the corners of Kaʿba, I never saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ touching except those facing south (Yemen) and regarding the tanned leather shoes, no doubt I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing non-hairy shoes and he used to perform ablution while wearing the shoes (i.e. wash his feet and then put on the shoes). So I love to wear similar shoes. And about the dyeing of hair with Hinna; no doubt I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ dyeing his hair with it and that is why I like to dye (my hair with it). Regarding Ihlal, I did not see Messenger of Allah ﷺ assuming Ihlal till he set out for Hajj (on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja).
15.7 It is recommended to apply perfume just before entering Ihram, and it is recommended to use Musk, and it does not matter if its glistening traces remain
(the wife of the Prophet ﷺ I used to scent Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he wanted to assume Ihram and also on finishing Ihram before the Tawaf round the Kaʿba (Tawaf-al-ifada).
It is as if I am just looking at the glitter of scent in the parting of the Prophet's head hair while he was a Muhrim.
I asked ʿAisha about the saying of Ibn ʿUmar (i.e. he did not like to be a Muhrim while the smell of scent was still coming from his body). ʿAisha said, "I scented Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he went round (had sexual intercourse with) all his wives, and in the morning he was Muhrim (after taking a bath)."
15.8 The prohibition of hunting game for the one who has entered Ihram for Hajj or for Umrah or for both
From As-Sa'b bin Jath-thama Al-Laithi that the latter presented an onager to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Al-Abwa' or at Waddan, and he refused it. On noticing the signs of some unpleasant feeling of disappointment on his (As-Sab's) face, the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "I have only returned it because I am Muhrim."
We were in the company of the Prophet ﷺ at a place called Al-Qaha (which is at a distance of three stages of journey from Medina). Abu Qatada narrated through another group of narrators: We were in the company of the Prophet ﷺ at a place called Al-Qaha and some of us had assumed Ihram while the others had not. I noticed that some of my companions were watching something, so I looked up and saw an onager. (I rode my horse and took the spear and whip) but my whip fell down (and I asked them to pick it up for me) but they said, "We will not help you by any means as we are in a state of Ihram." So, I picked up the whip myself and attacked the onager from behind a hillock and slaughtered it and brought it to my companions. Some of them said, "Eat it." While some others said, "Do not eat it." So, I went to the Prophet ﷺ who was ahead of us and asked him about it, He replied, "Eat it as it is Halal (i.e. it is legal to eat it).
My father set out (for Mecca) in the year of Al-Hudaibiya, and his companions assumed Ihram, but he did not. At that time the Prophet ﷺ was informed that an enemy wanted to attack him, so the Prophet ﷺ proceeded onwards. While my father was among his companions, some of them laughed among themselves. (My father said), "I looked up and saw an onager. I attacked, stabbed and caught it. I then sought my companions' help but they refused to help me. (Later) we all ate its meat. We were afraid that we might be left behind (separated) from the Prophet ﷺ so I went in search of the Prophet ﷺ and made my horse to run at a galloping speed at times and let it go slow at an ordinary speed at other times till I met a man from the tribe of Bani Ghifar at midnight. I asked him, "Where did you leave the Prophet ﷺ ?" He replied, "I left him at Ta'hun and he had the intention of having the midday rest at As-Suqya. I followed the trace and joined the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Your people (companions) send you their compliments, and (ask for) Allah's Blessings upon you. They are afraid lest they may be left behind; so please wait for them.' I added, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I hunted an onager and some of its meat is with me. The Prophet ﷺ told the people to eat it though all of them were in the state of Ihram."
That his father had told him that Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Hajj and so did his companions. He sent a batch of his companions by another route and Abu Qatada was one of them. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, "Proceed along the seashore till we meet all together." So, they took the route of the seashore, and when they started all of them assumed Ihram except Abu Qatada. While they were proceeding on, his companions saw a group of onagers. Abu Qatada chased the onagers and attacked and wounded a sheonager. They got down and ate some of its meat and said to each other: "How do we eat the meat of the game while we are in a state of Ihram?" So, we (they) carried the rest of the she-onager's meat, and when they met Messenger of Allah ﷺ they asked, saying, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We assumed Ihram with the exception of Abu Qatada and we saw (a group) of onagers. Abu Qatada attacked them and wounded a she-onager from them. Then we got down and ate from its meat. Later, we said, (to each other), 'How do we eat the meat of the game and we are in a state of Ihram?' So, we carried the rest of its meat. The Prophet asked, "Did anyone of you order Abu Qatada to attack it or point at it?" They replied in the negative. He said, "Then eat what is left of its meat."

15.9 What animals it is recommended for the Muhrim and others to kill inside and outside the Sanctuary
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Five kinds of animals are harmful and could be killed in the Haram (Sanctuary). These are: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse and the rabid dog."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not sinful (of a Muhrim) to kill five kinds of animals, namely: the crow, the kite, the mouse, the scorpion and the rabid dog."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not sinful of a Muhrim to kill five kinds of animals."
15.10 It is permissible for a Muhrim to shave his head if there is a problem, but it is obligatory to offer a Fidyah for shaving it, and Clarifying what the Fidyah is
Kaʿb bin 'Ujra said that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him (Kaʿb), "Perhaps your lice have troubled you?" Kaʿb replied, "Yes! O Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have your head shaved and then either fast three days or feed six poor persons or slaughter one sheep as a sacrifice."
I sat with Kaʿb bin Ujra in this mosque, i.e. Kufa Mosque, and asked him about the meaning of: "Pay a ransom (i.e. Fidya) of either fasting or . . . . (2.196)" He said, "I was taken to the Prophet ﷺ while lice were falling on my face. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'I did not think that your trouble reached to such an extent. Can you afford to slaughter a sheep (as a ransom for shaving your head)?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Then fast for three days, or feed six poor persons by giving half a Sa of food for each and shave your head.' So the above Verse was revealed especially for me and generally for all of you."
15.11 Cupping is permissible for the Muhrim (pilgrim in Ihram)
The Prophet, while in the state of Ihram, was cupped at the middle of his head at Liha-Jamal.
15.13 It is permissible for the Muhrim to wash his body and head
ʿAbdullah bin Al-Abbas and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama differed at Al-Abwa'; Ibn ʿAbbas said that a Muhrim could wash his head; while Al-Miswar maintained that he should not do so. ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas sent me to Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari and I found him bathing between the two wooden posts (of the well) and was screened with a sheet of cloth. I greeted him and he asked who I was. I replied, "I am ʿAbdullah bin Hunain and I have been sent to you by Ibn ʿAbbas to ask you how Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wash his head while in the state of lhram." Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari caught hold of the sheet of cloth and lowered it till his head appeared before me, and then told somebody to pour water on his head. He poured water on his head, and he (Abu Aiyub) rubbed his head with his hands by bringing them from back to front and from front to back and said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ doing like this."
15.14 What should be done with a Muhrim if he dies?
While a man was at ʿArafat (for Hajj) with Messenger of Allah ﷺ the fell down from his Mount and broke his neck (and died). So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two pieces of cloth and neither perfume him nor cover his head, for Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Resurrection and he will be saying 'Labbaik."
15.15 It is permissible for the Muhrim to stipulate a condition for exiting Ihram because of sickness and the like
Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Dubaa bint Az-Zubair and said to her, "Do you have a desire to perform the Hajj?" She replied, "By Allah, I feel sick." He said to her, "Intend to perform Hajj and stipulate something by saying, 'O Allah, I will finish my Ihram at any place where You stop me (i.e. I am unable to go further)." She was the wife of Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad.
15.17 Clarifying the types of Ihram; and that it is permissible to perfom Hajj that is Ifrad, Tamattu and Qiran. It is permissible to join Hajj to Umrah. And when the pilgrim who is performing Qiran should exit Ihram
(the wife of the Prophet ﷺ We set out with the Prophet ﷺ in his last Hajj and we assumed Ihram for Umra. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Whoever has the Hadi with him should assume Ihram for Hajj along with ʿUmra and should not finish the Ihram till he finishes both." I was menstruating when I reached Mecca, and so I neither did Tawaf round the Kaʿba nor Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. I complained about that to the Prophet ﷺ on which he replied, "Undo and comb your head hair, and assume Ihram for Hajj (only) and leave the Umra." So, I did so. When we had performed the Hajj, the Prophet sent me with my brother ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr to Tanʿim. So I performed the ʿUmra. The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "This ʿUmra is instead of your missed one." Those who had assumed Ihram for ʿUmra (Hajj-atTamattu) performed Tawaf round the Kaʿba and between Safa and Marwa and then finished their Ihram. After returning from Mina, they performed another Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa). Those who had assumed Ihram for Hajj and ʿUmra together (Hajj-al-Qiran) performed only one Tawaf (between Safa and Marwa).

ʿAisha said, "We set out with the Prophet ﷺ in his last Hajj. Some of us intended to perform ʿUmra while others Hajj. When we reached Mecca, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Those who had assumed the lhram for ʿUmra and had not brought the Hadi should finish his lhram and whoever had assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra and brought the Hadi should not finish the Ihram till he has slaughtered his Hadi and whoever had assumed the lhram for Hajj should complete his Hajj." ʿAisha further said, "I got my periods (menses) and kept on menstruating till the day of ʿArafat, and I had assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra only (Tamattuʿ). The Prophet ﷺ ordered me to undo and comb my head hair and assume the lhram for Hajj only and leave the ʿUmra. I did the same till I completed the Hajj. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent ʿAbdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr with me and ordered me to perform ʿUmra from at-Tanʿim in lieu of the missed ʿUmra."

ʿAisha said, "We set out with the sole intention of performing Hajj and when we reached Sarif, (a place six miles from Mecca) I got my menses. Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He said 'What is the matter with you? Have you got your menses?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'This is a thing which Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do with the exception of the Tawaf (Circumambulation) round the Kaʿba." ʿAisha added, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives."
We set out assuming the Ihram for Hajj in the months of Hajj towards the sacred precincts of Hajj. We dismounted at Sarif and the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "Whoever has not got the Hadi with him and likes to make it as ʿUmra, he should do it, but he who has got the Hadi with him should not do it." The Prophet ﷺ and some of his wealthy companions had the Hadi with them, so they did not finish Ihram after performing the ʿUmra. The Prophet ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He asked me the reason for it. I replied, "I have heard of what you have said to your companions and I cannot do the ʿUmra." He asked me, "What is the matter with you?" I replied, "I am not praying." He said, "There is no harm in it as you are one of the daughters of Adam and the same is written for you as for others. So, you should perform Hajj and I hope that Allah will enable you to perform the ʿUmra as well." So, I carried on till we departed from Mina and halted at Al-Mahassab. The Prophet ﷺ called ʿAbdur- Rahman and said, "Go out of the sanctuary with your sister and let her assume Ihram for ʿUmra, and after both of you have finished the Tawaf I will be waiting for you at this place." We came back at midnight and the Prophet ﷺ asked us, "Have you finished?" I replied in the affirmative. He announced the departure and the people set out for the journey and some of them had performed the Tawaf of the Kaʿba before the morning prayer, and after that the Prophet ﷺ set out for Medina.

' Aisha said, We went out with the Prophet (from Medina) with the intention of performing Hajj only and when we reached Mecca we performed Tawaf round the Kaʿba and then the Prophet ﷺ ordered those who had not driven the Hadi along with them to finish their Ihram. So the people who had not driven the Hadi along with them finished their Ihram. The Prophet's wives, too, had not driven the Hadi with them, so they too, finished their Ihram." ʿAisha added, "I got my menses and could not perform Tawaf round the Kaʿba." So when it was the night of Hasba (i.e. when we stopped at Al-Muhassab), I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Everyone is returning after performing Hajj and ʿUmra but I am returning after performing Hajj only.' He said, 'Didn't you perform Tawaf round the Kaʿba the night we reached Mecca?' I replied in the negative. He said, 'Go with your brother to Tanʿim and assume the Ihram for ʿUmra, (and after performing it) come back to such and such a place.' On that Safiya said, 'I feel that I will detain you all.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'O 'Aqra Halqa! Didn't you perform Tawaf of the Kaʿba on the day of sacrifice? (i.e. Tawaf-al-ifada) Safiya replied in the affirmative. He said, (to Safiya). 'There is no harm for you to proceed on with us.' " ʿAisha added, "(after returning from ʿUmra), the Prophet ﷺ met me while he was ascending (from Mecca) and I was descending to it, or I was ascending and he was descending."

ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr told me that the Prophet ﷺ had ordered him to let ʿAisha ride behind him and to make her perform ʿUmra from at-Tanʿim.
I heard Jabir bin ʿAbdullah in a gathering saying, "We, the companions of Messenger of Allah ﷺ assumed the state of Ihram to perform only Hajj without ʿUmra." Jabir added, "The Prophet ﷺ arrived (at Mecca) on the fourth of Dhul-Hijja. And when we arrived (in Mecca) the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to finish the state of Ihram, saying, "Finish your lhram and go to your wives (for sexual relation)." Jabir added, "The Prophet did not oblige us (to go to our wives) but he only made that legal for us. Then he heard that we were saying, "When there remains only five days between us and the Day of ʿArafat he orders us to finish our Ihram by sleeping with our wives in which case we will proceed to ʿArafat with our male organs dribbling with semen?' (Jabir pointed out with his hand illustrating what he was saying). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and said, 'You (People) know that I am the most Allah-fearing, the most truthful and the best doer of good deeds (pious) from among you. If I had not brought the Hadi with me, I would have finished my Ihram as you will do, so finish your Ihram. If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the Hadi with me.' So we finished our Ihram and listened to the Prophet ﷺ and obeyed him." (See Hadith No. 713, Vol. 2)

Jabir said, "The Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAli to keep the state of Ihram." Jabir added, "Ali bin Abi Talib returned (from Yemen) when he was a governor (of Yemen). The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'With what intention have you assumed the state of Ihram?' ʿAli said, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention as that of the Prophet." Then the Prophet ﷺ said (to him), 'Offer a Hadi and keep the state of Ihram in which you are now.' ʿAli slaughtered a Hadi on his behalf."

The Prophet ﷺ and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha had the Hadi with them. ʿAli had come from Yemen and he had the Hadi with him. He (ʿAli) said, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of Messenger of Allah ﷺ has assumed it." The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to intend the Ihram with which they had come for ʿUmra, to perform the Tawaf of the Kaʿba (and between Safa and Marwa), to get their hair cut short and then to finish their Ihram with the exception of those who had the Hadi with them. They asked, "Shall we go to Mina and the private organs of some of us are dribbling (if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives)?" The Prophet heard that and said, "Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi. If I did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram." ʿAisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies (of Hajj) except the Tawaf . So when she became clean from her menses, and she had performed the Tawaf of the Kaʿba, she said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You (people) are returning with both Hajj and ʿUmra and I am returning only with Hajj!" So, he ordered ʿAbdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr to go with her to at-Tanʿim. Thus she performed ʿUmra after the Hajj in the month of Dhi-l-Hijja. Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'sham met the Prophet ﷺ at Al-ʿAqaba (Jamrat-ul 'Aqaba) while the latter was stoning it and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permissible only for you?" The Prophet replied, "No, it is for ever (i.e. it is permissible for all Muslims to perform ʿUmra before Hajj."

15.21 The Standing and the Saying of Allah, The Most High: "Then depart from the place whence all the people depart"
١٥۔٢١ باب فِي الْوُقُوفِ وَقَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى { ثُمَّ أَفِيضُوا مِنْ حَيْث أَفَاضَ النَّاسُ}
During the Pre-Islamic period of Ignorance, the people used to perform Tawaf of the Kaʿba naked except the Hums; and the Hums were Quraish and their offspring. The Hums used to give clothes to the men who would perform the Tawaf wearing them; and women (of the Hums) used to give clothes to the women who would perform the Tawaf wearing them. Those to whom the Hums did not give clothes would perform Tawaf round the Kaʿba naked. Most of the people used to go away (disperse) directly from ʿArafat but they (Hums) used to depart after staying at Al-Muzdalifa. ʿUrwa added, "My father narrated that ʿAisha had said, 'The following verses were revealed about the Hums: Then depart from the place whence all the people depart--(2.199) ʿUrwa added, "They (the Hums) used to stay at Al-Muzdalifa and used to depart from there (to Mina) and so they were sent to ʿArafat (by Allah's order)."

My father said, "(Before Islam) I was looking for my camel .." The same narration is told by a different sub-narrator. Jubair bin Mutʿim said, "My camel was lost and I went out in search of it on the day of ʿArafat, and I saw the Prophet ﷺ standing in ʿArafat. I said to myself: By Allah he is from the Hums (literally: strictly religious, Quraish were called so, as they used to say, 'We are the people of Allah we shall not go out of the sanctuary). What has brought him here?"

15.22 It is permissible to base one's intention for Ihram on the intention of another
I came upon Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was at Al-Batha. He asked me, "Have you intended to perform the Hajj?" I replied in the affirmative. He asked, "For what have you assumed lhram?" I replied," I have assumed Ihram with the same intention as that of the Prophet ﷺ ." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have done well! Go and perform Tawaf round the Kaʿba and between Safa and Marwa." Then I went to one of the women of Bani Qais and she took out lice from my head. Later, I assumed the Ihram for Hajj. So, I used to give this verdict to the people till the caliphate of ʿUmar. When I told him about it, he said, "If we take (follow) the Holy Book, then it orders us to complete Hajj and ʿUmra (Hajj-at- Tamattuʿ) and if we follow the tradition of Messenger of Allah ﷺ then Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not finish his lhram till the Hadi had reached its destination (had been slaughtered). (i.e. Hajj-al-Qiran). (See Hadith No. 630)

15.23 The Permissibilty of Tamattu'
The Verse of Hajj-at-Tamatu was revealed in Allah's Book, so we performed it with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and nothing was revealed in Qur'an to make it illegal, nor did the Prophet ﷺ prohibit it till he died. But the man (who regarded it illegal) just expressed what his own mind suggested.
15.24 The Obligation For the Pilgrim who is performing Tamattu' to offer a sacrifice; If he has no animal to sacrifice, he must fast for three days during Hajj and seven days when he goes back to his family
During the last Hajj (Hajj-al-Wadaʿ) of Messenger of Allah ﷺ he performed ʿUmra and Hajj. He drove a Hadi along with him from Dhul-Hulaifa. Messenger of Allah ﷺ started by assuming Ihram for ʿUmra and Hajj. And the people, too, performed the ʿUmra and Hajj along with the Prophet. Some of them brought the Hadi and drove it along with them, while the others did not. So, when the Prophet ﷺ arrived at Mecca. he said to the people, "Whoever among you has driven the Hadi, should not finish his Ihram till he completes his Hajj. And whoever among you has not (driven) the Hadi with him, should perform Tawaf of the Kaʿba and the Tawaf between Safa and Marwa, then cut short his hair and finish his Ihram, and should later assume Ihram for Hajj; but he must offer a Hadi (sacrifice); and if anyone cannot afford a Hadi, he should fast for three days during the Hajj and seven days when he returns home. The Prophet ﷺ performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba on his arrival (at Mecca); he touched the (Black Stone) corner first of all and then did Ramal (fast walking with moving of the shoulders) during the first three rounds round the Kaʿba, and during the last four rounds he walked. After finishing Tawaf of the Kaʿba, he offered a two rakʿat prayer at Maqam Ibrahim, and after finishing the prayer he went to Safa and Marwa and performed seven rounds of Tawaf between them and did not do any deed forbidden because of Ihram, till he finished all the ceremonies of his Hajj and sacrificed his Hadi on the day of Nahr (10th day of Dhul-Hijja). He then hastened onwards (to Mecca) and performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba and then everything that was forbidden because of Ihram became permissible. Those who took and drove the Hadi with them did the same as Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.

15.25 The pilgrim performing Qiran should not exit Ihram except when the pilgrims performing Ifrad exit Ihram
Hafsa the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why have the people finished their Ihram after performing ʿUmra but you have not finished your Ihram after performing ʿUmra?" He replied, "I have matted my hair and garlanded my Hadi. So I will not finish my Ihram till I have slaughtered (my Hadi). "
15.26 It is permissible to exit Ihram if one is prevented from completing Hajj; It is permissible to perform Qiran and the pilgrim performing Qiran should perform just one Tawaf and one Sa'i
When ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar set out for Mecca with the intentions performing ʿUmra in the period of afflictions, he said, "If I should be prevented from reaching the Kaʿba, then I would do the same as we did while in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So, he assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra since the Prophet ﷺ had assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra in the year of Al-Hudaibiya. Then ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar thought about it and said, "The conditions for both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar." He then turned towards his companions and said, "The conditions of both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar and I make you witnesses that I have made the performance of Hajj obligatory for myself along with ʿUmra." He then performed one Tawaf (between As-Safa and Al-Marwa) for both of them (i.e. Hajj and (ʿUmra) and considered that to be sufficient for him and offered a Hadi.

Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj in the year when Al-Hajjaj attacked Ibn Az-Zubair. Somebody said to Ibn ʿUmar, "There is a danger of an impending war between them." Ibn ʿUmar said, "Verily, in Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have a good example. (And if it happened as you say) then I would do the same as Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done. I make you witness that I have decided to perform ʿUmra." Then he set out and when he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The ceremonies of both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar. I make you witness that I have made Hajj compulsory for me along with ʿUmra." He drove (to Mecca) a Hadi which he had bought from (a place called) Qudaid and did not do more than that. He did not slaughter the Hadi or finish his Ihram, or shave or cut short his hair till the day of slaughtering the sacrifices (10th Dhul-Hijja). Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head and considered the first Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) as sufficient for Hajj and ʿUmra. Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same."

15.27 Ifrad and Qiran
The Prophet ﷺ assumed the state of Ihram for Umra and Hajj, and we to assumed it for Hajj with him. When we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever does not possess a Hadi should regard his Ihram for Umra only." The Prophet ﷺ had a Hadi with him. ʿAli bin Abi Talib came to us from Yemen with the intention of performing Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "With what intention have you assumed the Ihram, for your wife is with us?" ʿAli said, "I assumed the lhram with the same intention as that of the Prophet ﷺ ." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Keep on the state of lhram, as we have got the Hadi."

15.28 It is recommended for the pilgrim to perform Tawaf Al-Qudum and As-Sa'i after it
I asked Ibn ʿUmar, "Can a person who has performed the Tawaf around the Kaʿba for ʿUmra but has not performed the (Saʿi) Tawaf of Safa and Marwa, have a sexual relation with his wife?" Ibn ʿUmar replied "When the Prophet ﷺ reached Mecca he performed the Tawaf around the Kaʿba (circumambulated it seven times) and offered a two-rakʿat prayer (at the place) behind the station (of Abraham) and then performed the Tawaf (Saʿi) of Safa and Marwa, and verily in Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have a good example." Then we put the same question to Jabir bin ʿAbdullah and he too replied, "He should not go near his wife (for sexual relation) till he has finished the Tawaf of Safa and Marwa."

15.29 Clarifying that the pilgrim who has entered Ihram for Umrah should not exit Ihram after performing Tawaf before Sa'i; And the pilgrim who has entered Ihram for Hajj should not exit Ihram after performing Tawaf Al-Qudum, and the same applies to the pilgrim performing Qiran

I asked ʿUrwa bin Az-Zubair (regarding the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ ). ʿUrwa replied, "Aisha narrated, 'When the Prophet ﷺ reached Mecca, the first thing he started with was the ablution, then he performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba and his intention was not ʿUmra alone (but Hajj and ʿUmra together).' " Later Abu Bakr I performed the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Kaʿba and it was not ʿUmra alone (but Hajj and ʿUmra together). And then ʿUmar did the same. Then ʿUthman performed the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Kaʿba and it was not ʿUmra alone. And then Muawiya and ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar did the same. I performed Hajj with Ibn Az-Zubair and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Kaʿba and it was not ʿUmra alone, (but Hajj and ʿUmra together). Then I saw the Muhajirin (Emigrants) and Ansar doing the same and it was not ʿUmra alone. And the last person I saw doing the same was Ibn ʿUmar, and he did not do another ʿUmra after finishing the first. Now here is Ibn ʿUmar present amongst the people! They neither ask him nor anyone of the previous ones. And all these people, on entering Mecca, would not start with anything unless they had performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba, and would not finish their Ihram. And no doubt, I saw my mother and my aunt, on entering Mecca doing nothing before performing Tawaf of the Kaʿba, and they would not finish their lhram. And my mother informed me that she, her sister, Az-Zubair and such and such persons had assumed lhram for ʿUmra and after passing their hands over the Corner (the Black Stone) (i.e. finishing their Umra) they finished their Ihram."

ʿAbdullah the slave of Asma bint Abu Bakr, told me that he used to hear Asma', whenever she passed by Al-Hajun, saying, "May Allah bless His Apostle Muhammad. Once we dismounted here with him, and at that time we were traveling with light luggage; we had a few riding animals and a little food ration. I, my sister, ʿAisha, Az-Zubair and such and such persons performed ʿUmra, and when we had passed our hands over the Kaʿba (i.e. performed Tawaf round the Kaʿba and between As-Safa and Al- Marwa) we finished our lhram. Later on we assumed Ihram for Hajj the same evening."

15.31 It is permissible to perform 'Umrah during the months of Hajj
The Prophet ﷺ and his companions reached Mecca in the morning of the 4th Dhul-Hijja reciting Talbiya (O Allah! We are obedient to your orders, we respond 4 to your call) . . . intending to perform Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to assume the lhram for Umra instead of Hajj, excepting those who had Hadi (sacrifice) with them.
Abu Jamra Nasr bin ʿImran Ad-Duba'i said, "I intended to perform Hajj-at-Tamattuʿ and the people advised me not to do so. I asked Ibn ʿAbbas regarding it and he ordered me to perform Hajj-at- Tammatu'. Later I saw in a dream someone saying to me, 'Hajj-Mabrur (Hajj performed in accordance with the Prophet's tradition without committing sins and accepted by Allah) and an accepted ʿUmra.' So I told that dream to Ibn ʿAbbas. He said, 'This is the tradition of Abul-Qasim.' Then he said to me, 'Stay with me and I shall give you a portion of my property.' " I (Shuʿba) asked, "Why (did he invite you)?" He (Abu Jamra) said, "Because of the dream which I had seen."

ʿAta' said, "Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'If he (i.e. the one intending to perform ʿUmra) has performed the Tawaf around the Kaʿba, his Ihram is considered to have finished.' said, 'What proof does Ibn ʿAbbas has as to this saying?" ʿAta' said, "(The proof is taken) from the Statement of Allah:-- "And afterwards they are brought For sacrifice unto Ancient House (Kaʿba at Mecca)" (22.33) and from the order of the Prophet to his companions to finish their Ihram during Hajjat-ul-Wadaʿ." I said (to ʿAta'), "That (i.e. finishing the Ihram) was after coming form ʿArafat." ʿAta' said, "Ibn ʿAbbas used to allow it before going to ʿArafat (after finishing the ʿUmra) and after coming from it (i.e. after performing the Hajj).

15.33 It is permissible for the pilgrim performing Umrah to shorten his hair and he does not have to shave it. It is recommended for him to shave his hair or shorten it at Al-Marwah
I cut short the hair of Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a long blade.
