11. Book of Zakāh (2/5)
I came to Medina and when I was in the company of the grandees of Quraish a man with a crude body and an uncouth face wearing coarse clothes came there. He stood up before them and said: Give glad tidings to those whom who amass riches of the stones which would be heated in the Fire of Hell, and would be placed at the tick of the chest till it would project from the shoulder bone and would he put on the shoulder bone till it would project from the tick of his chest, and it (this stone) would continue passing and repassing (from one side to the other). He (the narrator) said: Then people hung their heads and I saw none among them giving any answer. He then returned and I followed him till he sat near a pillar. I said: I find that these (people) disliked what you said to them and they do not understand anything. My friend Abu'l-Qasim (Muhammad) (may peace he upon him) called me and I responded to him, and he said: Do you see Uhud? I saw the sun (shining) on me and I thought that he would send me on an errand for him. So I said: I see it. Upon this he said: Nothing would delight me more than this that I should have gold like it (equal to the bulk of Uhud), and I should spend it all except three dinars. (How sad it is) that they hoard worldly riches, and they know nothing. I said: What about you and your brothers Quraish? You do not go to thein for any need and do not accept anything from them. He said: By Allah, I neither beg anything from them (from worldly goods), nor do I ask them anything about religion till I meet my Allah and His Messenger. (Using translation from Muslim 992a)
While I was in the company of the (elites) of Quraiah, Abu Dharr came there and he was saying: Give glad tidings to the hoarders of riches that their backs would be branded (so deeply) that (the hot Iron) would come out of their sides, and when the backs of their necks would be branded, it would come out of their foreheads. He (Abu Dharr) then went away and sat down. I asked who he was. They said: He is Abu Dharr. I went to him and said to him: What is this that I heard from you which you were saying before? He said: I said nothing but only that which I heard from their Prophet ﷺ. I again said: What do you say about this gift? He said: Take it, for today it is a help. But when it becomes a price for your religion, then abandon it. (Using translation from Muslim 992b)
[Machine] Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wealth that is not given its due will come to its owner on the Day of Judgment in the form of a camel, trampling him with its hooves. Cattle and sheep will come to their owner, trampling him with their hooves and pushing him with their horns. A treasure, being bold and dark, will confront its owner who will run away from it. Then the owner will turn to it, yet again it will run away from him, saying: 'What is between me and you?' The owner will reply: 'I am your treasure!' The treasure will then devour his hand."
A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more (praying)?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)" Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own." And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise)." (Using translation from Bukhārī 46)
[Machine] A man from the tribe of Saffah passed away, and they found two dinars in his possession. They mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, "They are two."
[Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a funeral procession passed by. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray for him." He asked, "Did he leave any debt behind?" They said, "No." He then asked, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "Three dinars." He said, "Give three handfuls of charity from it." Then, another funeral procession passed by and they said, "O Prophet of Allah, pray for him." He asked, "Did he leave any debt behind?" They said, "Yes." He then asked, "Did he leave any wealth?" They said, "No." A man from the Ansar named Abu Qatadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I will take care of his debt." The Prophet ﷺ then prayed for him.
[Machine] "While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was distributing gold, a man approached him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, give me something.' So he gave him. Then he said, 'Give me more.' And he gave him three times. Then the man turned and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A man comes to me and asks for something, and I give it to him. Then he asks for more, and I give him three times. Then he turns and leaves, while there is fire in his garment that will reach his family when he returns.'"
11.5 [Machine] The obligation of zakat
These are the types of charity (zakah) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made obligatory upon the Muslims and which Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, enjoined upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whoever among the Muslims is asked to pay it in the proper manner, let him give it; whoever is asked for more than that, let him not give it. For less than twenty-five camels, for each five, one sheep (should be given). If the number reaches twenty-five, then one she-camel in its second year (should be given), up to thirty-five. If there is no she-camel in its second year, then a he-camel in its third year (may be given). If the number reaches thirty-six, then a she-camel in its third year (should be given), up to forty-five. If the number reaches forty-six, then a she-camel in its fourth year that has been bred to a stallion camel should be given, up to sixty, If the number reaches sixty-one, then a she-camel in its fifth year (should be given), up to seventy five. If the number reaches seventy-six, then two she-camels in their second year (should be given), up to ninety. If the number reaches ninety-one, then two she camels in their fourth year that have been bred to a stallion camel should be given, up to one hundred and twenty. If the number is more than one hundred and twenty, then for every forty camels, a she-camel limits third year should be given and for every fifty a she-camel in its fourth year. If the ages of the camels for zakah differ, if what is due is a she-camel in its fifth year but he does not own such a camel, but he has a she-camel in its fourth year, then that will be accepted from him and he should add to it two sheep, if available, or twenty dirhams. If what is due from him is a she-camel in its fourth year and he only has a she camel in its fifth year, it should be accepted from him and the zakat collector should give him back twenty dirhams or two sheep. If what is due from him is a shecamel in its fourth year, but he does not have such a cameland he has a she-camel in its third year, then it should be accepted from him and he should add to it two sheep, is available, or twenty dirhams. If what is due from him is a she camel in its second year, but he only has a he-camel in its third year, then it should be accepted from him and nothing should be added to it. If he has only four camels, no zakah is due unless the owner wants to give it. With regard to zakah on sheep in the pasture, if there are forty sheep, then one sheep is due as zakah, up to one hundred and twenty sheep. of there is one more than that, then two sheep are due, up to two hundred. If there is one more than that then three sheep are due, up to three hundred. If there is one more than that, then for every hundred sheep, one sheep is due No toothless or defective sheep should be taken as zakah and neither should a ram, unless the one who is giving allows that. Separate flocks should not be put together and flocks should not be divided so as to avoid or reduce zakah. If there are two partners [and the zakah-collector comes and takes zakah), they should settle the matter between them on a fair basis. If a man's flock is grazing if it is one less than forty, then no zakah is due on it unless the owner wants to give it. On silver the zakah is one quarter of one tenth; if the wealth is only one hundred and ninety dirhams, then no zakah is due on it unless the owner wants to give it. (Using translation from Aḥmad 72)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ sent me on a charity mission to a poor and distressed man. I passed by a man from that town who had thirty camels and said to him, "Indeed, you have a share in this charity. There is a woman who just gave birth and is in need, and I dislike borrowing money from Allah with my own ill-gotten wealth. So you choose whether to give it or not." The man replied, "I would not take more than what is upon me, and this is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I will go to him." He went to the Prophet ﷺ , who reiterated what he had said to the man's father. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is what is upon you, but if you bring more than that, we will accept it from you." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, this is a great, well-fed and fat she-camel. Who will take care of it?" The Prophet ﷺ appointed someone to take care of it and prayed for him to be blessed in his wealth. Umamah ibn Zayd said, "Time has hit me fiercely, Marwan pursued me to give charity to help the poor and distressed during the time of Muawiya. I passed by this man and gave his belongings thirty camels, one thousand five hundred riding camels." Ibn Ishaq mentioned, "I asked Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr, 'What happened to the she-camel?' He replied, 'According to the custom, when a person's charity reaches thirty shares, the she-camel is taken along with it.'"

He said, "Rather, we will take the burden off you, O Qabisa, and we will fulfill it for them from the charity's camels." Then he said, "Indeed, begging is only permissible for three people: a man who takes on the responsibility and it is fulfilled until he can deliver it, or a man who is struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth, so it becomes permissible for him until he finds a provision or settles his debt, or a man who is afflicted with extreme poverty, and three witnesses from his people testify that begging is permissible for him, so it becomes permissible for him until he finds a provision or settles his debt. Most of them, may all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah changed when he saw them in poverty. He went in (to his house) then he came out and ordered Bilah to call the Adhan and then the Iqamah. He (the Prophet) prayed, tjem je addressed te,, (reciting the Verses): 'O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him(Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women: and fear Allah through Whom you demand (your mutual right), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever and All-Watcher over you.' [1] and: 'Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow,' [2] Then they gave in charity, some giving a Dinar, others a Dirham, or a garment, or a Sa' of wheat or, a Sa' of dates, until he said: 'Even half a date.' A man from among the Ansar came with a bag of money which his hands could hardly lift. The people followed one another (in giving charity) until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, and I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah shining like gold (with joy). The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever sets a good precedent in Islam, he will have the reward for that, and the reward of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever sets an evil precedent in Islam, he will have a burden of sin for that, and the burden of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest."'
