11. Book of Zakāh
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Will you not pledge allegiance to me?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you once, so what will we pledge allegiance to you for?" He said, "Pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, establish prayer, pay the zakat, and then he added softly, "And that you will not ask the people for anything."
The Prophet ﷺ said: Acts of begging are lacerations with which a man disfigures his face, so he who wishes may preserve his self-respect, and he who wishes may abandon it; but this does not apply to one who begs from a ruler, or in a situation which makes it necessary. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1639)
