That he heard the Prophet ﷺ delivering a sermon on the pulpit saying, "Kill snakes and kill Dhu-at- Tufyatain (i.e. a snake with two white lines on its back) and Al-Abtar (i.e. a snake with short or mutilated tail) for they destroy the sight of one's eyes and bring about abortion." (ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar further added): Once while I was chasing a snake in order, to kill it, Abu Lubaba called me saying: "Don't kill it," I said. "Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to kill snakes." He said, "But later on he prohibited the killing of snakes living in the houses." (Az-Zuhri said. "Such snakes are called Al-Awamir.")

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَاقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَطْمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيَسْتَسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا أُطَارِدُ حَيَّةً لأَقْتُلَهَا فَنَادَانِي أَبُو لُبَابَةَ لاَ تَقْتُلْهَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ الْحَيَّاتِ قَالَ إِنَّهُ نَهَى بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَنْ ذَوَاتِ الْبُيُوتِ وَهْىَ الْعَوَامِرُ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Kill the snake with two white lines on its back, for it blinds the on-looker and causes abortion."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يَلْتَمِسُ الْبَصَرَ وَيُصِيبُ الْحَبَلَ

'A'isha reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded the killing of a snake having stripes over it, for it affects eyesight and miscarries pregnancy.

أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِقَتْلِ ذِي الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يَلْتَمِسُ الْبَصَرَ وَيُصِيبُ الْحَبَلَ

Kill the snakes having stripes over them and short-tailed snakes, for these two types cause miscarriage (of a pregnant woman) and they affect the eyesight adversely. So Ibn 'Umar used to kill every snake that he found. Abu Lubaba b. 'Abd al-Mundhir and Zaid b. Khattab saw him pursuing a snake, whereupon he said: They were forbidden (to kill) those snakes who live in houses.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَسْتَسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ وَيَلْتَمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ قَالَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقْتُلُ كُلَّ حَيَّةٍ وَجَدَهَا فَأَبْصَرَهُ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُنْذِرِ أَوْ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يُطَارِدُ حَيَّةً فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ قَدْ نَهَى عَنْ ذَوَاتِ الْبُيُوتِ

Kill snakes, kill those which have two streaks and those with small tails, for they obliterate the eyesight and cause miscarriage. Salim said: ‘Abd Allah(b. ‘Umar) used to kill every snake which he found. Abu Lubabah or Zaid b. al-Khattab saw him chasing a snake. He said: He(the Prophet) prohibited house-snakes.

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Kill snakes and kill Dhut-Tufyatain and Al-Abtar, because they blind the sight and cause abortions of fetuses."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَاقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَلْتَمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيُسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَعَائِشَةَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَسَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ

“The Prophet ﷺ enjoined killing Dhit-Tufytain* for it takes away the sight and causes miscarriage.” *That means a wicked snake.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَائِمًا عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِيَقُولُ اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَاقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَلْتَمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيُسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited the killing of house lizards except for the two types: the gecko and the skink, as they harm the eyes and women are frightened by them.

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ قَتْلِ عَوَامِرِ الْبُيُوتِ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ مِنْ ذِي الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ والْأَبْتَرِ؛ فَإِنَّهُمَا يُكْمِهَانِ الْأَبْصَارَ وَتَخْدِجُ مِنْهُنَّ النِّسَاءُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to order the killing of the person who causes injury to the optic nerve and seeks permanent blindness.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ بِقَتْلِ ذِي الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ يُصِيبُ الْحَبَلَ وَيَلْتَمِسُ الْبَصَرَ

[AI] He informed him that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Kill snakes and kill two types of crows and also the one with a stubby tail, for they seek eyesight and can cause the umbilical cord to weaken and drop." Ibn 'Umar said, "I used to kill every snake I encountered until Abu Lubabah ibn Abdul-Mundhir and Zaid ibn Al-Khattab saw me chasing a snake from the houses and they forbade me from killing it. I said, 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ordered their killing.' They replied, 'He prohibited killing the ones found inside houses.'"

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَاقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَلْتَمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيَسْتَسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ» قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ مَا كُنْتُ أَدَعُ حَيَّةً إِلَّا قَتَلْتُهَا حَتَّى رَآنِي أَبُو لُبَابَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُنْذِرِ وَزَيْدُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَأَنَا أُطَارِدُ حَيَّةً مِنْ حَيَّاتِ الْبُيُوتِ فَنَهَيَانِي عَنْ قَتْلِهَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِنَّ فَقَالَا «إِنَّهُ نَهَى عَنْ قَتْلِ ذَوَاتِ الْبُيُوتِ»

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ prohibited killing the inhabitants of houses, except for the two types: the mouse and the scorpion, as they cause miscarriage and blind the eyes."

«نَهَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ قَتْلِ عَوَامِرِ الْبُيُوتِ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ مِنْ ذِي الطُّفَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرِ فَإِنَّهُمَا يُسْقِطَانِ الْحَمْلَ وَيَطْمِسَانِ الْأَبْصَارَ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Kill snakes, for whoever finds the two forked ones or the one with a short tail and does not kill them, then he is not one of us, for they are the ones that snatch the sight and cause miscarriages in women."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ فَمَنْ وَجَدَ ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرَ فَلَمْ يَقْتُلْهُمَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا فَإِنَّهُمَا اللَّذَانِ يَخْطِفَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيُسْقِطَانِ مَا فِي بُطُونِ النِّسَاءِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Kill the snake, the rat, and the kite, as they seek the eyesight and cut the cord. Whoever does not kill them is not among us."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «اقْتُلُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَاقْتُلُوا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَلْتَمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيَسْتَسْقِطَانِ الْحَبَلَ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَقْتُلْهُمَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»

[AI] No one kills the jinn except the one with two twisted forelocks and the one with an amputated leg, for they blur the eyesight and cause miscarriage for pregnant women.

عَنْ قَتْلِ الْجِنَّانِ إِلَّا ذَا الطُّفْيَتَيْنِ وَالْأَبْتَرَ فَإِنَّهُمَا يَطْمِسَانِ الْبَصَرَ وَيُسْقِطَانِ مَا فِي بُطُونِ النِّسَاءِ»

"اقْتُلوا الحَياتِ، واقتلوا ذا الطُّفْيَتَين، والأبْتَرَ، فإِنَّهُمَا يطمسان البصَرَ ويَسْتَسقِطَانِ الحَبَلَ ".

(زاد الطبراني في الكبير: "فمن لم يقتلهما فليس منا" ورجاله رجال الصحيح ".

"اقتلوا الحيَّاتِ والكلابَ، واقتلوا ذا الطُّفْيَتينِ والأبْتَرَ، فإِنَّهما يَلتَمِسَانِ البَصَرَ ويَسْتَسْقِطان الحبَلَ ".

"اقْتلُوا الحيَّاتِ، فَمَنْ وَجَدَ ذَا الطُّفيَتَيْنِ والأبتر فَلَمْ يَقْتُلْهُمَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا، فَإِنَّهما اللذانِ يخطفَانِ البصَرَ ويُسْقِطَانِ مَا فِى بُطُونِ النِّسَاءِ".
