[AI] "When this verse was revealed {Eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn}, I took two headbands, one black and the other white, and put them under my pillow. I raised them at night but could not determine the white from the black. So, I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'O son of Hatim, if that is the case, then your pillow is too wide. Indeed, what Allah meant is to eat and drink until the whiteness of day becomes distinct from the darkness of night.'"

quran:2:187

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives ˹for sexual relations˺. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread ˹of night˺. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits ˹set by˺ Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.

Permitted to you, upon the night of the Fast, is to go in to your wives, in sexual intercourse: this was revealed as an abrogation of its unlawfulness during the earliest phase of Islam, as well as ˹an abrogation of˺ the unlawfulness of eating and drinking after the night prayer; they are a vestment for you, and you are a vestment for them (a metaphor for their embraces or their need for one another); God knows that you have been betraying yourselves, by having sexual intercourse on the eve of the fast: this happened with ‘Umar ˹b. al-Khattāb˺ and others, and they apologised to the Prophet (s), and so He has turned to you ˹relenting˺, before you even turned in repentance, and He has pardoned you. So now, when it is permitted to you, lie with them, in sexual intercourse, and seek what God has prescribed for you, of sexual intercourse or what it produces of offspring; and eat and drink, ˹at any time˺ during the night, until the white thread is distinct, to you, from the black thread at daybreak, that is, the true ˹moment of daybreak˺, which explains the white thread, while the explanation of the black thread, namely, the night, has been left out. The whiteness and the darkness of the dawn ˹twilight˺ are likened to two black and white threads in the way they stretch out; then complete the fast, from daybreak, to the night, that is, until it arrives, after the setting of the sun; and do not lie with them, your women, while you cleave to the mosques in devotion ˹to God˺, while you are residing ˹therein˺ with the intention of ˹performing˺ i‘tikāf (‘spiritual retreat’). This was a prohibition pertaining to one who used to leave ˹the mosque˺, whilst in a state of i‘tikāf, have sexual intercourse with his wife, and then return. Those, rulings mentioned, are God’s bounds, delimited by God for His servants so that they do not overstep them; do not approach them (lā taqrabūhā, is more intense than lā ta‘taddūhā, ‘Do not overstep’, used in verses elsewhere). So, just as He makes clear to you what has been mentioned, God makes clear His signs to people so that they might fear ˹disobeying˺ His prohibitions.

When the above verses were revealed: 'Until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread,' I took two (hair) strings, one black and the other white, and kept them under my pillow and went on looking at them throughout the night but could not make anything out of it. So, the next morning I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the whole story. He explained to me, "That verse means the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn."

When the following verses were revealed: 'Eat and drink until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread' and of dawn was not revealed, some people who intended to fast, tied black and white threads to their legs and went on eating till they differentiated between the two. Allah then revealed the words, 'of dawn', and it became clear that meant night and day.

" Until the white streak of the dawn becomes distinct from the dark streak" (ii. 187) Adi b. Hatim said: Messenger of Allah, verily I keep underneath my pillow two strings, one white and the other black, by which I distinguish night from dawn. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Your pillow seems to be very large. For the word khait implies the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn.

" Eat and drink till the white streak is distinct from the dark streak," a person would take hold of a white thread and a black thread and keep on eating till he could find them distinct (in the light of the dawn). It was then that Allah, the Majestic and Great, reveiled (the words) min al-fajr (from the dawn), and then it became clear (that the word khait refers to the streak of light in the dawn).

When this verse was revealed." Eat and drink till the white streak becomes distinct from the dark streak for you," the person who decided to observe fast tied on one of his feet a black thread and on the other a white thread. And he went on eating and drinking till he could distinguish (between their colour) on seeing them. It was after this that Allah reveal- ed (the words): min al-fajr. And they (the Muslims) came to know that (the word khait) refers to the night and day. (Using translation from Muslim 1091b)

[AI] When this verse was revealed, I took two ropes, one of them black and the other white, and placed them under my pillow. I raised them in the night but I could not distinguish the white from the black. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "O son of Hatim, if your pillow had been truly wide, you would have been able to distinguish the white from the black. Allah only meant that you should eat and drink until the whiteness of the day can be distinguished from the darkness of the night."

(Using translation from Bukhārī 1917)

[AI] This verse was revealed {and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread} [Surah Al-Baqarah 187], and it did not reveal {of dawn} [Surah Al-Baqarah 187]. He said, "There were men among us who, when they wanted to fast, would tie a white thread and a black thread around one of their legs. He would continue to eat and drink until he could distinguish between the two threads. Then Allah, the Most High, revealed after that {of dawn} [Surah Al-Baqarah 187], so they knew that it only meant the night and the day." Ibn Abi Maryam said, "Ibn Abi Hazim narrated to me from his father from Sahl bin Saad in a similar manner."
