Whenever the Prophet ﷺ took a bath after Janaba he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that he would put his fingers in water and move the roots of his hair with them, and then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي الْمَاءِ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعَرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ غُرَفٍ بِيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ كُلِّهِ

(on the authority of his father) ʿAisha said, "Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the bath of Janaba, he cleaned his hands and performed ablution like that for prayer and then took a bath and rubbed his hair, till he felt that the whole skin of the head had become wet, then he would pour water thrice and wash the rest of the body." ʿAisha further said, "I and Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take a bath from a single water container, from which we took water simultaneously."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ اغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ يُخَلِّلُ بِيَدِهِ شَعَرَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا ظَنَّ أَنْ قَدْ أَرْوَى بَشَرَتَهُ أَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ وَقَالَتْ كُنْتُ أَغْتَسِلُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ نَغْرِفُ مِنْهُ جَمِيعًا

I screened the Prophet ﷺ while he was taking a bath of Janaba. He washed his hands, poured water from his right hand over his left and washed his private parts. Then he rubbed his hand over a wall or the earth, and performed ablution similar to that for the prayer but did not wash his feet. Then he poured water over his body, shifted from that place, and washed his feet.

سَتَرْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَغْتَسِلُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ صَبَّ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَغَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ وَمَا أَصَابَهُ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى الْحَائِطِ أَوِ الأَرْضِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ غَيْرَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى جَسَدِهِ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى فَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ

I placed water near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to take a bath because of sexual intercourse. He washed the palms of his bands twice or thrice and then put his hand In the basin and poured water over his private parts and washed them with his left hand. He then struck his hand against the earth and rubbed it with force and then performed ablution for the prayer and then poured three handfuls of water on his head and then washed his whole body after which he moved aside from that place and washed his feet, and then I brought a towel (so that he may wipe his body). but he returned it.

أَدْنَيْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ غُسْلَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ بِهِ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ وَغَسَلَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ الأَرْضَ فَدَلَكَهَا دَلْكًا شَدِيدًا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَفَنَاتٍ مِلْءَ كَفِّهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى عَنْ مَقَامِهِ ذَلِكَ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَرَدَّهُ

"When AlIah's Messenger wanted to perform Ghusl for Janabah, he would begin by washing his hands before putting them into the vessel. Then he would wash his private area, and perform the Wudu (as one does) for Salat. Then he would wet his hair with the water, then he would pour water over his head with his hands three times."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُمَا الإِنَاءَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُشَرِّبُ شَعْرَهُ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ يَحْثِي عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَثَيَاتٍ

It was narrated from 'Aishah that when the Prophet ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah he would start by washing his hands, then he would perform Wudu' as for prayer, then he would dip his fingers in the water, then run them through his hair, then he would pour water over his head three times, then he would pour water over his entire body.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ الْمَاءَ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ غُرَفٍ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى جَسَدِهِ كُلِّهِ

"My maternal aunt Maimunah told me: 'I brought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ water for his Ghusl from Janabah, and he washed his hands two or three times, then he put his right hand in the vessel and poured water over his private part, then he washed it with his left hand. Then he put his left hand on the ground and rubbed it hard. Then he performed Wudu' as for prayer,then poured three scoops with his two hands full of water over his head, then he washed his entire body, then he moved away from where he had been standing and washed his feet.' She said: 'Then I brought him a towel but he refused it.'"

أَدْنَيْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ غُسْلَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ بِيَمِينِهِ فِي الإِنَاءِ فَأَفْرَغَ بِهَا عَلَى فَرْجِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ الأَرْضَ فَدَلَكَهَا دَلْكًا شَدِيدًا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَثَيَاتٍ مِلْءَ كَفِّهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى عَنْ مَقَامِهِ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَرَدَّهُ

"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah, he would start by washing his hands, then he would pour water with his right hand onto his left and wash his private part, then he would strike his hand on the ground then wipe it then wash it. Then he would perform Wudu' as for prayer, then he would pour water on his head and all of his body. Then he would move and wash his feet."

عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ ثُمَّ يَضْرِبُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى الأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَمْسَحُهَا ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُهَا ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَعَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ يَتَنَحَّى فَيَغْسِلُ رِجْلَيْهِ

"When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah, he would wash his hands, then perform Wudu' as for prayer, then he would perform Ghusl, then run his fingers through his hair to be sure that the water pour water over his head three times, then wash the rest of his body."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ اغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ يُخَلِّلُ بِيَدِهِ شَعْرَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَرْوَى بَشَرَتَهُ أَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ

"When the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ0 performed Ghusl from Janabah, he would wash his hands, then perform Wudu' as for prayer, then run his fingers through his hair until he was sure the water had reached the scalp, then he would pour water over his head three times, then wash the rest of his body."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُخَلِّلُ رَأْسَهُ بِأَصَابِعِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا خُيِّلَ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ غَرَفَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ

"I put out some water for the Prophet to take a bath, and he bathe to cleanse himself from impurity following sexual activity. He tilted the vessel with his left hand, pouring water into his right, and washed his hands three times. Then he pourd water over his private parts, then he rubbed his hands on the ground. Then he rinsed his mouth and nose, and washed his face three times, and his forearms three times. Then he poured water over the rest of his body, then he moved aside and washed his feet."

وَضَعْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ غُسْلاً فَاغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَأَكْفَأَ الإِنَاءَ بِشِمَالِهِ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ ثُمَّ دَلَكَ يَدَهُ فِي الأَرْضِ ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ الْمَاءَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ

[AI] Regarding the ritual purification of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from janabah (major ritual impurity), it was narrated that he used to command for a vessel to be brought and then he would pour water with his right hand onto his left hand, and then wash his private parts and anything that was affected by impurity. Then, he would perform ablution (wudu) for prayer, and then wash his head and the rest of his body, and then he would turn and wash his feet. Afterwards, he would be given a cloth and he would place it between his hands and then he would shake his fingers, making sure not to touch the cloth with his hands.

عَنْ غُسْلِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ «يُؤْتَى بِالْإِنَاءِ فَيُفْرِغُ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ وَمَا أَصَابَهُ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ رَأْسَهُ وَسَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ يَتَحَوَّلُ فَيَغْسِلُ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُؤْتَى بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَيَضَعُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَيَنْفُضُ أَصَابِعَهُ وَلَا يَمَسُّهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to begin by washing his hands, then perform ablution for prayer. He would then dip his hand in water and pass it through the roots of his hair until he believed that his skin had been relieved from impurities. He would pour three handfuls of water over his head and then perform a full body wash. Abu Muhammad said, "This narration from Salim bin Abi Al-Jaad is dearer to me."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ كَفَّهُ فِي الْمَاءِ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا خُيِّلَ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ غَرَفَ بِيَدِهِ ثَلَاثَ غَرَفَاتٍ فَصَبَّهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ اغْتَسَلَ» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ هَذَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ

[AI] Regarding the washing of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from janaba (major ritual impurity), she said: He would begin by washing his hands, and then he would wash them. Wiqas would wash his hands three times, then he would perform ablution for prayer. He would then pour water three times over the roots of his hair until he thought that the skin had been rinsed, and then he would pour three handfuls of water over his head and let it flow over the rest of his body. Ibn Numair said: He would fill his hands with water three times.

عَنْ غُسْلِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَبْدَأُ بِيَدَيْهِ فَيَغْسِلُهُمَا قَالَ وَكِيعٌ يَغْسِلُ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُخَلِّلُ أُصُولَ شَعَرِ رَأْسِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ اغْتَرَفَ ثَلَاثَ غَرَفَاتٍ فَصَبَّهُنَّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ قَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ غَرَفَ بِيَدَيْهِ مِلْءَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا

[AI] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to perform ghusl (ritual purification) from major impurity, he would wash his hands three times, then take water with his right hand to pour it on his left hand and wash his private parts until he cleanses them. Then he would wash his hands again properly, then rinse his mouth three times and sniff water into his nose three times, then he would wash his face three times and his arms three times. Then he would pour water on his head three times, and then he would perform ghusl. When he finished, he would wash his feet.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ يَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَأْخُذُ بِيَمِينِهِ لِيَصُبَّ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ حَتَّى يُنَقِّيَهُ ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ غَسْلًا حَسَنًا ثُمَّ يُمَضْمِضُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَغْسِلُ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ الْمَاءَ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلُ فَإِذَا خَرَجَ غَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ

[AI] The prophet ﷺ used to perform ablution when he wanted to perform a ritual bath from major impurity. His ablution was for prayer. Then he would put his hand into a container and search through the roots of his hair. When he thought that he had thoroughly reached all of the skin, he would pour water on his head three times. After that, he would perform the ritual bath. Uruwah said, except that he used to start with washing his hands, then his private parts.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَوَضَّأُ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ يَدَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ فَيَتَتَبَّعُ أُصُولَ شَعَرِهِ فَإِذَا ظَنَّ أَنْ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ كُلَّهَا أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلُ وقَالَ عُرْوَةُ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ فَرْجَهُ

"I asked 'Aishah about how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah. She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pour water onto his hands three times, then he would wash his private part, then he would wash his hands, then rinse his mouth and nose, then pour water onto his head three times, then pour water over the rest of his body.'" عَنْ غُسْلِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِإِنَائِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ مِنَ الْإِنَاءِ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ فَيَغْسِلُهُ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْيُسْرَى فَيَغْسِلُهَا ثُمَّ يُمَضْمِضُ وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ , used to perform ablution before praying when he wanted to cleanse himself from a state of impurity. He would then pour water onto his head three times, running his fingers through the roots of his hair.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from A'isha, umm al-muminin, that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did ghusl for major ritual impurity, he would begin by washing his hands, and then do wudu as for prayer. He would then put his fingers in the water and rub the roots of his hair with them. Then he would pour as much water as two hands can hold on to his head three times, and over the entire surface of his skin.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ بِغَسْلِ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلاَةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي الْمَاءِ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ غَرَفَاتٍ بِيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ كُلِّهِ

"Aishah described how the Prophet ﷺ performed Ghusl for Janabah. She said: 'He used to wash his hands three times, then pour water with his right hand onto his left and wash his private part and whatever was on it.' - (One of the narrators) 'Umar said: "I think he said: 'He would pour water with his right hand onto his left hand three times.'" - "Then he would rinse his mouth three times and his nose three times, and wash his face and hands three times, then he would pour water over his head three times, then pour water over himself.'" وَصَفَتْ عَائِشَةُ غُسْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ قَالَتْ «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ بِيَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْيُسْرَى فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ وَمَا أَصَابَهُ ثُمَّ يُمَضْمِضُ وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَغْسِلُ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ»

It was narrated from 'Aishah that when the Prophet ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah he would start by washing his hands, then he would perform Wudu' as for prayer, then he would dip his fingers in the water, then run them through his hair, then he would pour water over his head three times, then he would pour water over his entire body. حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي الْمَاءِ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثَ غَرَفَاتٍ بِيَدِهِ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ covered himself and then performed ritual purification from sexual impurity. He began by washing his hands, pouring water from his right hand onto his left hand, and then he washed his private parts and anything that came into contact with them. Then he struck the ground or wall with his hand, and he performed ablution for prayer, except for his feet. Then he poured water over his feet and wiped them.

«سَتَرْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَاغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَبَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ صَبَّ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَغَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ وَمَا أَصَابَهُ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى الْحَائِطِ أَوِ الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ إِلَّا رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ نَحَّى قَدَمَيْهِ فَغَسَلَهُمَا»

"A vessel would be brought to the prophet ﷺ then he would pour water on his hand three times and wash them, then he would pour water with his right hand onto his left and wash off whatever was on his thighs. Then he would wash his hands, rinse his mouth and nose, pour water on his head three times, then pour water over the rest of his body." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 245)

عَنْ غُسْلِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ؟ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يُؤْتَى بِإِنَاءٍ فَيُصَبُّ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ مَا عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ وَيُمَضْمِضُ وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ وَيَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ»

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ took a bath after Janaba he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that he would put his fingers in water and move the roots of his hair with them, and then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body. أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ «بَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ الْمَاءَ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ ثُمَّ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثَ غُرَفٍ ثُمَّ يُفِيضُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ كُلِّهِ»

"My maternal aunt Maimunah told me: 'I brought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ water for his Ghusl from Janabah, and he washed his hands two or three times, then he put his right hand in the vessel and poured water over his private part, then he washed it with his left hand. Then he put his left hand on the ground and rubbed it hard. Then he performed Wudu' as for prayer,then poured three scoops with his two hands full of water over his head, then he washed his entire body, then he moved away from where he had been standing and washed his feet.' She said: 'Then I brought him a towel but he refused it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 253)

أَدْنَيْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غُسْلَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَمِينَهُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ فَأَفْرَغَ بِهَا عَلَى فَرْجِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ الْأَرْضَ فَدَلَكَهَا دَلْكًا شَدِيدًا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثَ حَفْنَاتٍ مِلْءَ كَفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى عَنْ مَقَامِهِ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ فَرَدَّهُ 247 وَعَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ بِهِ نَحْوَهُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ghusl to cleanse himself from major impurity. He washed his hands three times, then performed wudu for prayer. After that, he inserted his hand into a vessel of water and passed his fingers through the roots of his hair until it seemed to him that he had thoroughly cleaned his scalp. Then, he poured water onto his head, allowing it to flow over the rest of his body.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَبَدَأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فَخَلَّلَ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ حَتَّى خُيِّلَ إِلِيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ ثُمَّ صَبَّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ الْمَاءَ

I placed water near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to take a bath because of sexual intercourse. He washed the palms of his bands twice or thrice and then put his hand In the basin and poured water over his private parts and washed them with his left hand. He then struck his hand against the earth and rubbed it with force and then performed ablution for the prayer and then poured three handfuls of water on his head and then washed his whole body after which he moved aside from that place and washed his feet, and then I brought a towel (so that he may wipe his body). but he returned it. "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ghusl from Janabah, he would start by washing his hands, then he would pour water with his right hand onto his left and wash his private part, then he would strike his hand on the ground then wipe it then wash it. Then he would perform Wudu' as for prayer, then he would pour water on his head and all of his body. Then he would move and wash his feet." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 419)

عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ فَأَفْرَغَ الْإِنَاءَ عَلَى يَدِهِ فَغَسَلَهَا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَمَسَحَهَا ثُمَّ غَسَلَهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَسَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ

[AI] The Prophet Mohammed ﷺ used to start by washing his hands, then perform ablution for prayer. After that, he would dip his hands into water and run his fingers through his hair roots. When he felt that his skin was well-moistened, he would pour three handfuls of water over his head. Then he would wash the rest of his body. This hadith is narrated by Hisham bin Urwah in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُدْخِلُ كَفَّيْهِ فِي الْمَاءِ فَيُخَلِّلُ بِهَا أُصُولَ شَعْرِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا خُيِّلَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ الْبَشَرَةَ غَرَفَ بِيَدِهِ ثَلَاثَ غَرَفَاتٍ فَصَبَّهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ اغْتَسَلَ مُخَرَّجٌ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to begin by washing his hands when he performed ghusl (ritual bath) from janabah (major ritual impurity), then he would pour water with his right hand onto his left hand and wash his private parts. Then he would perform wudu (ritual ablution) for prayer, and then he would take water and insert his fingers into the roots of his hair until he felt that he had completely cleaned himself. He would then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water over the rest of his body. Finally, he would wash his feet. This narration is strange and authentic.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ يَبْدَأُ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَيَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يَأْخُذُ الْمَاءَ فَيُدْخِلُ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي أُصُولِ الشَّعْرِ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى أَنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَبْرَأَ حَفَنَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثَ حَفَنَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ غَرِيبٌ صَحِيحٌ

I screened the Prophet ﷺ while he was taking a bath of Janaba. He washed his hands, poured water from his right hand over his left and washed his private parts. Then he rubbed his hand over a wall or the earth, and performed ablution similar to that for the prayer but did not wash his feet. Then he poured water over his body, shifted from that place, and washed his feet. (Using translation from Bukhārī 281)

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to begin by washing his hands after exiting a state of major ritual impurity. Then, he would take water with his right hand and pour it over his left hand, washing his private parts until they were clean. Then, he would rinse his mouth and nostrils three times, wash his face three times, and his arms three times. After that, he would pour water over his head and body. When he finished, he would wash his feet.

(on the authority of his father) ʿAisha said, "Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the bath of Janaba, he cleaned his hands and performed ablution like that for prayer and then took a bath and rubbed his hair, till he felt that the whole skin of the head had become wet, then he would pour water thrice and wash the rest of the body." ʿAisha further said, "I and Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take a bath from a single water container, from which we took water simultaneously." كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُخَلِّلُ بِيَدِهِ شَعْرَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَرْوَى بَشَرَتَهُ أَفَاضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ وَقَالَتْ كُنْتُ أَغْتَسِلُ أَنَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ نَغْرِفُ مِنْهُ جَمِيعًا

"When AlIah's Messenger wanted to perform Ghusl for Janabah, he would begin by washing his hands before putting them into the vessel. Then he would wash his private area, and perform the Wudu (as one does) for Salat. Then he would wet his hair with the water, then he would pour water over his head with his hands three times." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 104)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ بَدَأَ بِغَسْلِ يَدَيْهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُمَا فِي الْإِنَاءِ ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ فَرْجَهُ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ يُشْرِبُ شَعْرَهُ الْمَاءَ ثُمَّ يَحْثِي عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثَ حَثَيَاتٍ وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ هِشَامٍ وَقَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ فَغَسَلَ يَدَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَدْخِلَهَا الْإِنَاءَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ prepared water for his ritual bath from impurity. He poured it onto his right hand and washed it, then poured it onto his left hand and washed it, then poured it onto his right foot and washed it. Then he struck the ground with his hands. Then he performed ablution for prayer. He poured water onto his head three times and then washed the rest of his body. After that, he moved away from the place of bathing and washed his feet. I offered him a towel, but he did not take it and instead shook his hand. Hafs said that Al-A'mash said, "I mentioned this to Ibrahim, and he said that it was disliked out of fear of setting a precedent."

وَضَعَتُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غُسْلًا مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ فَافْرَغَ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ فَغَسَلَهَا ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى شِمَالِهِ فَغَسَلَهَا ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ بِيَمِينِهِ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ فَغَسَلَ فَرْجَهُ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ أَفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ بِيَدِهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى عَنْ مُغْتَسَلِهِ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ فَنَاوَلْتُهُ مَنْدِيلًا فَلَمْ يَأْخُذْهُ وَجَعَلَ يَنْفُضُ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ حَفْصٌ قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا كُرِهَ ذَلِكَ مَخَافَةَ الْعَادَةِ

"إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الجنَابَةِ فَبَدأَ فَغَسَل كَفَّيْه ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَه لِلصَّلَاةِ، ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فِي المَاءِ فَخَلَّلَ بِهَا أُصُولَ الشَّعْرِ حَتَّى يُخَيَّل إِلَيَّ أَنَّه اسْتَبْرَأَ البَشْرَةَ، ثُمَّ صَبَّ عَلَى رَأسِهِ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ أَفَاضَ عَلَى سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ الْمَاءَ".

"عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ قَالَتْ: [سَكَبْتُ] لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَضُوءًا من الجَنَابَةِ، فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْه مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، فَأَفْرَغَ عَلَى فَرْجِهِ فَغَسَلَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ، وَضَرَبَ بِشِمَالِهِ الأَرْضَ فَدَلَكَهَا دَلْكًا شَدِيدًا، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلاةِ، ثُمَّ أفْرَغَ عَلَى رَأسِهِ ثَلّاثَ حَفَنَاتٍ مِلْءَ كَفَّيْهِ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ سَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ، ثُمَّ تَنَحَّى مِنْ مُقَامِهِ فَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِالمِنْدِيلِ فَرَدَّهُ".
