The Prophet ﷺ was delivering a sermon on a Friday when the people stood up and cried out, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, the rainfall has ceased, the trees have withered, and the livestock have perished—so supplicate to Allah to give us rain.” He said, “O Allah, give us rain,” twice. By Allah, we did not see in the sky even a small patch of cloud, then a cloud formed and it rained. He came down from the pulpit and prayed. When he finished, it continued to rain until the next Friday.

Then, when the Prophet ﷺ stood to deliver the sermon, they cried out to him, “The houses have collapsed and the roads have been cut off—so supplicate to Allah to withhold it from us.” The Prophet ﷺ smiled, then said:

allāhumma, hawālaynaa wa laa ʿalaynā

“O Allah, ˹let it rain˺ around us and not upon us.”

So the rain was turned away from Madinah: it began to rain around it, and not a single drop fell upon the city. I looked at Madinah, and it was as though it were in the middle of a wreath.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ، فَقَامَ النَّاسُ فَصَاحُوا، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ، وَاحْمَرَّتِ الشَّجَرُ، وَهَلَكَتِ الْبَهَائِمُ، فَادْعُ اللَّهَ يَسْقِينَا. فَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا» مَرَّتَيْنِ. وَايْمُ اللَّهِ مَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً مِنْ سَحَابٍ، فَنَشَأَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَأَمْطَرَتْ، وَنَزَلَ عَنِ الْمِنْبَرِ فَصَلَّى. فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ لَمْ تَزَلْ تُمْطِرُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا.

فَلَمَّا قَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ، صَاحُوا إِلَيْهِ: تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ، وَانْقَطَعَتِ السُّبُلُ، فَادْعُ اللَّهَ يَحْبِسُهَا عَنَّا. فَتَبَسَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، ثُمَّ قَالَ:

«اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا».

فَكُشِطَتِ الْمَدِينَةُ، فَجَعَلَتْ تُمْطِرُ حَوْلَهَا وَلَا تَمْطُرُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَطْرَةً، فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَفِي مِثْلِ الْإِكْلِيلِ.

Once during the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the people of Medina suffered from drought. So while the Prophet was delivering a sermon on a Friday a man got up saying, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The horses and sheep have perished. Will you invoke Allah to bless us with rain?" The Prophet ﷺ lifted both his hands and invoked. The sky at that time was as clear as glass. Suddenly a wind blew, raising clouds that gathered together, and it started raining heavily. We came out (of the Mosque) wading through the flowing water till we reached our homes. It went on raining till the next Friday, when the same man or some other man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The houses have collapsed; please invoke Allah to withhold the rain." On that the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, "O Allah, (let it rain) around us and not on us." I then looked at the clouds to see them separating forming a sort of a crown round Medina.

أَصَابَ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ قَحْطٌ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَبَيْنَا هُوَ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ إِذْ قَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتِ الْكُرَاعُ هَلَكَتِ الشَّاءُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ يَسْقِينَا فَمَدَّ يَدَيْهِ وَدَعَا قَالَ أَنَسٌ وَإِنَّ السَّمَاءَ لَمِثْلُ الزُّجَاجَةِ فَهَاجَتْ رِيحٌ أَنْشَأَتْ سَحَابًا ثُمَّ اجْتَمَعَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَتِ السَّمَاءُ عَزَالِيَهَا فَخَرَجْنَا نَخُوضُ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا مَنَازِلَنَا فَلَمْ نَزَلْ نُمْطَرُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الأُخْرَى فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ يَحْبِسْهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى السَّحَابِ تَصَدَّعَ حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ كَأَنَّهُ إِكْلِيلٌ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ on a Friday while he (the Prophet) was delivering a sermon at Medina, and said, "There is lack of rain, so please invoke your Lord to bless us with the rain." The Prophet ﷺ looked at the sky when no cloud could be detected. Then he invoked Allah for rain. Clouds started gathering together and it rained till the Medina valleys started flowing with water. It continued raining till the next Friday. Then that man (or some other man) stood up while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, and said, "We are drowned; Please invoke your Lord to withhold it (rain) from us" The Prophet smiled and said twice or thrice, "O Allah! Please let it rain round about us and not upon us." The clouds started dispersing over Medina to the right and to the left, and it rained round about Medina and not upon Medina. Allah showed them (the people) the miracle of His Prophet and His response to his invocation.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَهْوَ يَخْطُبُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ فَاسْتَسْقِ رَبَّكَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَمَا نَرَى مِنْ سَحَابٍ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَنَشَأَ السَّحَابُ بَعْضُهُ إِلَى بَعْضٍ ثُمَّ مُطِرُوا حَتَّى سَالَتْ مَثَاعِبُ الْمَدِينَةِ فَمَا زَالَتْ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الْمُقْبِلَةِ مَا تُقْلِعُ ثُمَّ قَامَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ غَرِقْنَا فَادْعُ رَبَّكَ يَحْبِسْهَا عَنَّا فَضَحِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا فَجَعَلَ السَّحَابُ يَتَصَدَّعُ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالاً يُمْطَرُ مَا حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ يُمْطِرُ مِنْهَا شَىْءٌ يُرِيهِمُ اللَّهُ كَرَامَةَ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ وَإِجَابَةَ دَعْوَتِهِ

"The Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah one Friday when the people stood up and shouted: 'O Prophet of Allah! There has been no rain and the animals have died. Pray to Allah (SWT) to send us rain.' He said: 'O Allah, send us rain; O Allah, send us rain.' By Allah (SWT), we could not see even a wisp of a cloud in the sky, then a cloud appeared and grew, and it rained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down and prayed, and the people departed, and it continued to rain until the following Friday. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to deliver the Khutbah, they called out to him and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, the houses are destroyed and the routes are cut off. Pray to Allah to take it away from us.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us!' Then is dispersed from Al-Madinah and rain fell around Al-Madinah but not a single drop fell on Al-Madinah. I looked, and it was in something like a ring."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ فَصَاحُوا فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قُحِطَتِ الْمَطَرُ وَهَلَكَتِ الْبَهَائِمُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَسْقِيَنَا قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا قَالَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ مَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً مِنْ سَحَابٍ قَالَ فَأَنْشَأَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَانْتَشَرَتْ ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا أُمْطِرَتْ وَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى وَانْصَرَفَ النَّاسُ فَلَمْ تَزَلْ تَمْطُرُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ الأُخْرَى فَلَمَّا قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ صَاحُوا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ وَتَقَطَّعَتِ السُّبُلُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهَا عَنَّا فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا فَتَقَشَّعَتْ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَجَعَلَتْ تَمْطُرُ حَوْلَهَا وَمَا تَمْطُرُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَطْرَةً فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَفِي مِثْلِ الإِكْلِيلِ

[Machine] A man called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a Friday while he was delivering a sermon to the people in the city. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, there has been a drought, the ground has dried up, and the people are suffering. Please ask your Lord to send rain to us." The Prophet ﷺ looked at the sky, and we did not see many clouds. So, he performed the prayer for rain, and the clouds started gathering and then it rained until the streets of the city were filled with water and the roads turned into rivers. And it continued like this until the next Friday, without the rain stopping. Then, this man or someone else stood up while the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon and said, "O Prophet of Allah, ask Allah to stop the rain." The Prophet of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "O Allah, let the rain fall around us and not on us." So, he prayed to his Lord, and the clouds broke apart around the city, raining heavily on its surroundings but not on the city itself.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا نَادَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ وَأَمْحَلَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَقَحَطَ النَّاسُ فَاسْتَسْقِ لَنَا رَبَّكَ فَنَظَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَمَا نَرَى كَثِيرَ سَحَابٍ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَنَشَأَ السَّحَابُ بَعْضَهُ إِلَى بَعْضٍ ثُمَّ مُطِرُوا حَتَّى سَالَتْ مَثَاعِبُ الْمَدِينَةِ وَاضْطَرَدَتْ طُرُقُهَا أَنْهَارًا فَمَا زَالَتْ كَذَلِكَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ الْمُقْبِلَةِ مَا تُقْلِعُ ثُمَّ قَامَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ وَنَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهَا عَنَّا فَضَحِكَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ فَجَعَلَ السَّحَابُ يَتَصَدَّعُ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا يُمْطِرُ مَا حَوْلَهَا وَلَا يُمْطِرُ فِيهَا شَيْئًا

قَالَ بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ إِذْ قَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسولَ اللهِ جَهِدَتِ الأَنْفُسُ وَقَحَطَ أو قال قحطت الأرض فاستسق لَنَا قَالَ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا قَالَ وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ مِنْ قَزْعَةٍ قَالَ فَتَجَمَّعَ السَّحَابُ وَمُطِرُوا إِلَى مِثْلِهَا فَقَامَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسولَ اللهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ وَانْقَطَعَتِ الطُّرُقُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَهَا عَنَّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا ولاَ عَلَيْنَا قَالَ فَانْكَشَفَتِ السَّمَاءُ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَكَانَ يُمْطَرُ مَا حَوْلَهَا ولاَ نُمْطَرُ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ هَذَا لَفْظُهُ أَوْ قَرِيبًا مِنْهُ ولاَ نعلمُ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَن أَنَس إلاَّ مُبَارَكٌ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ ثَابِتٌ وَقَتَادَةُ وَيَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَشَرِيكُ بْنُ أَبِي نَمِرٍ عَن أَنَس بِأَلْفَاظٍ مُتَقَارِبَةٍ وَمَعْنَاهُ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ السَّوَاءِ

قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ فَثَارَ النَّاسُ قالوا يارسول اللَّهِ قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ وَجَهِدَتِ الأَنْفُسُ وَهَلَكَتِ الْبَهَائِمُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَسْقِيَنَا قَالَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ مَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً مِنْ سَحَابٍ فَأَنْشَأَتْ سَحَابَةٌ وَانْتَشَرَتْ ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا مُطِرَتْ قَالَ فَمُطِرُوا إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الأُخرَى فَلَمَّا قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ قَالُوا يارسول اللَّهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ وَانْقَطَعَتِ السُّبُلُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهَا عَنَّا فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقال اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا ولاَ عَلَيْنَا فَتَكَشَّفَتْ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَجَعَلَ يُمْطِرُ مَا حَوْلَ الْمَدِينةِ ولاَ تُمْطِرُ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ ثابتٍ مِنْ وُجُوهٍ ولاَ نعلمُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ عُبَيد اللَّهِ عَنْ ثابتٍ عَن أَنَس بنحوه

أَنَّ رَجُلا نَادَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وهُو يَخْطُبُ الناس بالمدينة يارسول اللَّهِ قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ فَاسْتَسْقِ لَنَا رَبَّكَ فَنَظَرَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَمَا مِنْ أَثَرِ كَبِيرِ سَحَابٍ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَنَشَأَ السَّحَابُ بَعْضَهُ إِلَى بَعْضٍ حَتَّى سَالَتْ مَثَاعِبُ الْمَدِينَةِ فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا كَذَلِكَ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الْمُقْبِلَةِ مَا أَقْلَعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ وَنَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ فقال يارسول اللَّهِ غَرِقْنَا فَادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهَا عَنَّا فَضَحِكَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا ولاَ عَلَيْنَا اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا ولاَ عَلَيْنَا فَضَحِكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاثًا قَالَ فَجَعَلَ السَّحَابَ يَتَصَدَّعُ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالا يُمْطِرُ مَا حَوْلَهَا ولاَ يُمْطِرُ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ لِيُرِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ كَرَامَةَ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ وإجابة دعوته

Messenger of Allah ﷺ I was delivering the Khutba (sermon) on a Friday when the people stood up, shouted and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! There is no rain (drought), the trees have dried and the livestock are destroyed; Please pray to Allah for rain." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said twice, "O Allah! Bless us with rain." By Allah, there was no trace of cloud in the sky and suddenly the sky became overcast with clouds and it started raining. The Prophet ﷺ came down the pulpit and offered the prayer. When he came back from the prayer (to his house) it was raining and it rained continuously till the next Friday. When the Prophet started delivering the Friday Khutba (sermon), the people started shouting and said to him, "The houses have collapsed and the roads are cut off; so please pray to Allah to withhold the rain." So the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, "O Allah! Round about us and not on us." So the sky became clear over Medina but it kept on raining over the outskirts (of Medina) and not a single drop of rain fell over Median. كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَامَ النَّاسُ فَصَاحُوا فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَحَطَ الْمَطَرُ وَاحْمَرَّ الشَّجَرُ وَهَلَكَتِ الْبَهَائِمُ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَسْقِيَنَا فَقَالَ اللهُمَّ اسْقِنَا اللهُمَّ اسْقِنَا قَالَ وَايْمُ اللهِ مَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً مِنْ سَحَابٍ فَأَنْشَأَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَانْتَشَرَتْ ثُمَّ أَمْطَرَتْ وَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى وَانْصَرَفَ فَلَمْ تَزَلْ تُمْطِرُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الْأُخْرَى فَلَمَّا قَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَخْطُبُ صَاحُوا فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ وَانْقَطَعَتِ السُّبُلُ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهَا عَنَّا فَتَبَسَّمَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا فَتَقَشَّعَتْ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَجَعَلَتْ تُمْطِرُ حَوْلَهَا وَمَا تُمْطِرُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَطْرَةً فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ كَأَنَّهَا لَفِي مِثْلِ الْإِكْلِيلِ

The people of Medina had a drought during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. While he was preaching on a Friday, a man stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, the horses have perished, the goats have perished, pray to Allah to give us water. He spread his hands and prayed. Anas said: The sky was like a mirror (there was no cloud). Then the wind rose; a cloud appeared (in the sky) and it spread : the sky poured down the water. We came out (from the mosque after the prayer) passing through the water till we reached our homes. The rain continued till the following Friday. The same or some other person stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, the houses have been demolished, pray to Allah to stop it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: (O Allah), the rain may fall around us but not upon us. Then I looked at the cloud which dispersed around Medina just like a crown. أَصَابَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ قَحْطٌ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ ﷺ يَخْطُبُنَا يَوْمَ جُمُعَةِ إِذْ قَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكَ الْكُرَاعُ وَهَلَكَ الشَّاءُ؛ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَسْقِيَنَا فَمَدَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَيْهِ وَدَعَا ؛ قَالَ أَنَسٌ وَإِنَّ السَّمَاءَ لَمِثْلُ الزُّجَاجَةِ فَهَاجَتْ رِيحٌ ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَتْ سَحَابًا ثُمَّ اجْتَمَعَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتِ السَّمَاءُ عَزَالِيَهَا؛ فَخَرَجْنَا نَخُوضُ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا مَنَازِلَنَا فَلَمْ تَزَلْ تُمْطِرُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الْأُخْرَى فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ تَهَدَّمَتِ الْبُيُوتُ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهُ؛ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى السَّحَابِ تَصَدَّعَ حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ كَأَنَّهَا إِكْلِيلٌ
