They replied, 'Yes, he greeted us by saying 'as-salamu 'alaykum.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No, he actually said 'as-samu 'alaykum' (death be upon you), meaning that you should abandon your religion. So when a person from the People of the Book greets you, respond by saying 'wa 'alayk' (and upon you).'"

So the Messenger of Allahﷺ called him and said, 'Indeed, Allah is the Judge and to Him belongs all judgment. So why do they call you Abu Al-Hakam?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, when my people differ in something, they accept my judgment, and I judge between them.' So he said, 'That is good. What is your status in regard to having children?' He said, 'Shurayh, Abdullah, and Muslim.' He said, 'Which of them is the eldest?' He said, 'Shurayh.' He said, 'Then you are Abu Shurayh.' So the Messenger of Allahﷺ supplicated for him and his children. When the people wanted to return to their lands, he gave each of them a piece of land wherever they liked in their lands. Abu Shurayh said, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me something that will make me enter Paradise.' He said, 'Good speech, spreading peace, and feeding food.'"
