Avoid sitting on the paths. They (his Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, there is no other help to it (but to sit there as we) hold our meetings and discuss matters there. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you have to sit at all, then fulfil the rights, of the path. They said: What are their rights? Thereupon he said: Keeping the eye downward (so that you may not stare at the women), refraining from doing some harm to the other and exchanging mutual greetings (saying as-Salamu 'Alaikum to one another) and commanding the good and forbidding the evil. (Using translation from Muslim 2121a)  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْجُلُوسَ فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا لَنَا مِنْ مَجْلِسِنَا بُدٌّ نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا قَالَ «فَإِذَا أَبَيْتُمْ إِلَّا الْمَجْلِسَ فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ» قَالُوا مَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ؟ قَالَ «غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ وَكُفُّ الْأَذَى وَرَدُّ السَّلَامِ وَالْأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade sitting on the pathways. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are unable to do that and cannot bear it." He said, "If not, then fulfill its rights." They asked, "What are its rights, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Responding to greetings, offering blessings to the one who sneezes when he praises Allah, lowering the gaze, and guiding the way."  

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَنْ تَجْلِسُوا بِأَفْنِيَةِ الصُّعُدَاتِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ ذَلِكَ وَلَا نُطِيقُهُ قَالَ «إِمَّا لَا فَأَدُّوا حَقَّهَا» قَالُوا وَمَا حَقُّهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «رَدُّ التَّحِيَّةِ وَتَشْمِيتُ الْعَاطِسِ إِذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَغَضُّ الْبَصَرِ وَإِرْشَادُ السَّبِيلِ»  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a gathering of the Ansar and said, "If you refuse to sit (unless I join you), then guide the way, convey peace, and help the needy."  

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى مَجْلِسِ الْأَنْصَارِ فقَالَ «إِنْ أَبَيْتُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ تَجْلِسُوا فَاهْدُوا السَّبِيلَ وَرُدُّوا السَّلَامَ وَأَغِيثُوا الْمَلْهُوفَ»
