Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to lead a Ghazwa, he would use an equivocation from which one would understand that he was going to a different destination .  

البخاري:٢٩٤٧ – حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ كَعْبٍ ؓ وَكَانَ قَائِدَ كَعْبٍ مِنْ بَنِيهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ كَعْبَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حِينَ تَخَلَّفَ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُرِيدُ غَزْوَةً إِلاَّ وَرَّى بِغَيْرِهَا
