'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفْرًا أَنْ لاَ نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ

I came to Ṣafwān b ʿAssāl al-Murādī to ask him about wiping over the socks, so he asked: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘Indeed, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is seeking.’

So I said: ‘Indeed there is some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the socks after defecation and urination, and you were a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, so I came to you to ask you: Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, he ﷺ used to order us, that when we were travelers’ - or - ‘in travel, to not remove our socks for three days and nights except, from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’”

He said: “Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning love?” He said: “Yes. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called upon him (saying): ‘O Muhammad!’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with a voice similar to him (saying): "Come." So we said to him: ‘Woe to you! Lower your voice for you are with the Prophet ﷺ, and you have been prohibited from this.’ He said: ‘By Allah, I will not lower (my voice).’ The Bedouin said: ‘Can a person love a people and yet not catch up to them ˹in terms of good deeds˺?’ He ﷺ said: "A person is with whomever he loves on the Day of Judgement."

So ˹the Prophet ﷺ˺ kept on talking to us until he mentioned a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years.” Sufyan added: “In the direction of Shām, Allah created it the day He created the heavens and the earth, being open – that is, for repentance – and it shall not be shut until the sun rises ˹from that direction˺ (on the Last Day).

أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ: مَا جَاءَ بِكَ يَا زِرُّ؟ فَقُلْتُ: ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ۔ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَطْلُبُ۔

قُلْتُ: إِنَّهُ حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَجِئْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِيِنَ أَنْ لاَ نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ، لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ۔

فَقُلْتُ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ! فَأَجَابَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى نَحْوٍ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ: «هَاؤُمُ»، وَقُلْنَا لَهُ: وَيْحَكَ اغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ فَإِنَّكَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَدْ نُهِيتَ عَنْ هَذَا۔ فَقَالَ: وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَغْضُضُ۔ قَالَ الأَعْرَابِيُّ: الْمَرْءُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ؟ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ».

فَمَا زَالَ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى ذَكَرَ بَابًا مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ أَوْ يَسِيرُ الرَّاكِبُ فِي عَرْضِهِ أَرْبَعِينَ أَوْ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا۔ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: قِبَلَ الشَّامِ خَلَقَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ مَفْتُوحًا - يَعْنِي لِلتَّوْبَةِ - لاَ يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْهُ۔

“I came to Safwan bin ʿAssal Al-Muradi so he said to me: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘It has been conveyed to me that the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is doing.’” He said: “So I said to him: ‘Indeed there is something wavering’ - or - ‘some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the Khuff after defecation. So have you retained anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, when we were travelers, he ﷺ used to order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “So I said: ‘So have you memorized anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning love?’ He said: ‘Yes, we were in one of our journeys with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man, a harsh, foolish Bedouin, who had been at the end of the group, called him with a loud voice, saying: “O Muhammad! O Muhammad!” So the people said to him “Mah! Indeed, you have been prohibited from this.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with similar to his voice: “Come.” So he said: “A man loves a people but he has not reached them?” He said: ‘So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man is with whomever he loves.”’ Zirr said: “He did not cease reporting to me until he had reported that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has appointed a gate in the west - its width is the distance of a seventy-year journey - for repentance: it shall not be locked until the sun rises from its direction, and that is the Statement of Allah, Blessed be He and Most High, of the Ayah: The Day some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul shall be benefited by its believing.”

أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ فَقَالَ لِي مَا جَاءَ بِكَ قُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَفْعَلُ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ حَاكَ أَوْ قَالَ حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِي شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَهَلْ حَفِظْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيهِ شَيْئًا قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أُمِرْنَا أَنْ لاَ نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلاَثًا إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ فَهَلْ حَفِظْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَنَادَاهُ رَجُلٌ كَانَ فِي آخِرِ الْقَوْمِ بِصَوْتٍ جَهْوَرِيٍّ أَعْرَابِيٌّ جِلْفٌ جَافٍ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ مَهْ إِنَّكَ قَدْ نُهِيتَ عَنْ هَذَا فَأَجَابَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَحْوًا مِنْ صَوْتِهِ هَاؤُمُ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ قَالَ زِرٌّ فَمَا بَرِحَ يُحَدِّثُنِي حَتَّى حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّ اللَّهَ جَعَلَ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا عَرْضُهُ مَسِيرَةُ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ لاَ يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ وَذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ ﷻْ ( يومَ يَأْتِي بَعْضُ آيَاتِ رَبِّكَ لاَ يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا ) الآيَةَ

"I asked Safwan bin 'Assal about wiping over the Khuffs, and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell us, when we were travelling, to wipe over our Khuffs and not take them off for three nights in the event of defecating, urinating or sleeping; only in the case of Janabah.'"

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى خِفَافِنَا وَلاَ نَنْزِعَهَا ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ

"I came to a man called Safwan bin 'Assal and sat at his door. He came out and said: 'What do you want?' I said: 'I am seeking knowledge.' He said: 'The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of pleasure at what he is seeking.' He said: 'What do you want to know about?' I said: 'About the Khuffs.' He said: 'When we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, he told us not to take them off for three days except in the case of Janabah, but not in the case of defecation, urinating or sleep.'"

مَا شَأْنُكَ قُلْتُ أَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَطْلُبُ فَقَالَ عَنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ تَسْأَلُ قُلْتُ عَنِ الْخُفَّيْنِ قَالَ كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لاَ نَنْزِعَهُ ثَلاَثًا إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ

"The Messenger of Allah used to command us not to take off our leather socks for three days except in the case of sexual impurity, but not in the case of defecation, urine or sleep (i.e. during travel)."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ لاَ نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ

أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ فَقَالَ مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ فَقُلْتُابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَطْلُبُ قُلْتُ حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِي مَسْحٌ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً أَوْ فِي صَدْرِي بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا قَالَ نَعَمْ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ الْهَوَى؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَهُ فِي مَسِيرَةٍ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ جَهْوَرِيٍّ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقُلْنَا وَيْحَكَ اغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ فَإِنَّكَ قَدْ نُهِيتَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَا أَغْضُضُ مِنْ صَوْتِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَاءَ وَأَجَابَهُ عَلَى نَحْوٍ مِنْ مَسْأَلَتِهِ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً وَأَجَابَهُ نَحْوًا مِمَّا تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ فَقَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ؟ قَالَ هُوَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ قَالَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَزَلْ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى قَالَ إِنَّ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ لَبَابًا مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعُونَ أَوْ أَرْبَعُونَ عَامًا فَتَحَهُ اللهُ ﷻ لِلتَّوْبَةِ يَوْمَخَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَا يُغْلِقُهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْهُ

[AI] "What do you need from me?" I said to him, "I seek knowledge." He said, "Indeed, the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks." I said to myself, "I will cleanse the two socks after relieving myself and urinating." I was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ , so I came to you to ask if you heard anything from him about this? He said, "Yes, he used to command us when we were on a journey or traveling, not to remove our socks for three days and nights except for sexual impurity, but we could do so for relieving ourselves, urinating, and sleeping."

لِي مَا حَاجَتُكَ؟ قُلْتُ لَهُ ابْتِغَاءُ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًى بِمَا يَطْلُبُ قُلْتُ حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتُ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا فِي سَفَرٍ أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ»

[AI] "What's wrong with you?" I said, "I am seeking knowledge." He replied, "For I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he does.' So I asked him about wiping over the two socks, and he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to wipe over three (things) when we travel, and a day and a night when we stay, without removing them due to defecation, urination, or sleep, but rather due to sexual impurity.'"

مَا غَدَا بِكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَصْنَعُ» فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ «أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَمْسَحَ ثَلَاثًا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا وَيَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً إِذَا أَقَمْنَا وَلَا نَنْزِعُهُمَا مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَا نَوْمٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ»

[AI] Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ mentioning anything about wiping over the socks? He replied, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us that when we are traveling or on a journey, not to remove or take off our socks for three days and nights unless due to ritual impurity (janabah)."

سَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ «أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ أَوْ نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ إِلَّا مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ»

[AI] "What brings you here?" I said, "Seeking knowledge." He said, "Indeed, the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks." I said, "May I ask you - an action that I perform in private, which is wiping over my socks after using the toilet - I used to be one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , so I came to you to ask if you have heard from him anything about it?" He said, "Yes, he used to instruct us when we were traveling or on a journey, not to remove our socks for three days and nights unless due to Janabah (major ritual impurity), but to remove them for using the toilet, urine, and sleep.”

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا لِمَا يَطْلُبُ قُلْتُ حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ «كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفْرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ»

'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 96)

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا فِي السَّفَرِ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ نَوْمٍ وغائطٍ وَبَوْلٍ»

[AI] "What brings you?" I said, "I have come seeking knowledge." He said, "Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whenever a person goes out of his house in search of knowledge, the angels lower their wings in approval of what he is doing.'" I said, "I have come to ask you about wiping over the socks." He said, "Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent, and he commanded us to wipe over our socks when they are pure, three times when we are traveling, and one night when we are staying. We do not remove them except from sexual impurity." He said, "And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, for Maghrib (sunset) there is an open door for repentance, the distance of seventy years, which is not closed until the sun rises from its setting.'"

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ جِئْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَا مِنْ خَارِجٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًا بِمَا يَصْنَعُ» قُلْتُ جِئْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنْتُ فِي الْجَيْشِ الَّذِي بَعَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَدْخَلْنَاهُمَا عَلَى طَهُورٍ ثَلَاثًا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا وَلَيْلَةً إِذَا أَقَمْنَا وَلَا نَخْلَعُهُمَا مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَا نَوْمٍ وَلَا نَخْلَعُهُمَا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ» قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ لِلْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَفْتُوحًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ مَسِيرَةُ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا»

“I came to Safwan bin ʿAssal Al Muradi to ask him about wiping over the Khuff, so he said: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘Indeed, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is seeking.’ So I said: ‘Indeed there is some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the Khuff after defecation and urination, and you were a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, so I came to you to ask you: Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, he ﷺ used to order us, that when we were travelers’ - or - ‘in travel, to not remove our Khuff for three days and nights except, from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning love?” He said: “Yes. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called upon him (saying): ‘O Muhammad!’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with a voice similar to him (saying): ‘Come.’ So we said to him: ‘Lower your voice for you are with the Prophet ﷺ, and you have been prohibited from this.’ He said: ‘By Allah, I will not lower (my voice).’ The Bedouin said: ‘A man loves a people but he is not with them (in terms of deeds)?’ He ﷺ said: ‘A man is with whomever he loves on the Day of Judgement.’” So he did not cease talking with us, until he mentioned a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years.” Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: “In the direction of Ash-Sham, Allah created it the Day He created the heavens and the earth, open - that is, for repentance. It shall not be locked until the sun rises through it.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3535)

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَطْلُبُ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتُ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ «كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ كُنَّا مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ» قُلْتُ أَسَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ الْهَوَى؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ مَعَهُ فِي مَسِيرٍ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ جَهْوَرِيٍّ أَوْ قَالَ جَوْهَرِيٍّ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ شَكَّ قَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَأَجَابَهُ بِنَحْوٍ مِنْ كَلَامِهِ فَقَالَ «مَهْ» قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا وَلَمْ يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ؟ قَالَ «هُوَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» قَالَ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى قَالَ «إِنَّ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً فَتَحَهُ اللهُ لِلتَّوْبَةِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَا يُغْلِقُهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ»

[AI] "When we used to travel with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he instructed us not to remove our shoes for three nights and days, except for sexual impurity. As for impurity caused by feces or urine, it is not allowed."

«كُنَّا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ وَأَيَّامَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَأَمَّا مِنْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ فَلَا»

'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 96)

«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُوصِينَا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا أَوْ كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ بَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ وغائطٍ»

[AI] What brought you here?" I said, "To seek knowledge." He said, "Shall I not give you glad tidings?" I said, "Of course." So he raised the hadith and said, "Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks." Then he asked him about wiping over the footwear, so he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'The traveler wipes over his footwear for three days and nights from urine, feces, or sleep, but not from sexual impurity.' Then he began to inform us, and he said, 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey when a Bedouin called out to him with a loud voice, saying, 'O Muhammad, O Muhammad, O Muhammad!' So I said to him, 'Lower your voice, for you have been commanded not to raise your voice.' So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, responded to him according to what he had heard from him, saying, 'Here I am.' Then he asked him about love for a people when he is encompassed by them, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'A person is with those whom he loves.' Then he began to inform us, and he said, 'The gate of repentance is open from the west, its width is the travel of seventy years, and it will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction.' Then he recited this verse, 'Do they await except that the angels should come to them?'"

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ فَقُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ فَقَالَ أَلَا أُبَشِّرُكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى فَرَفَعَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ «إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًى بِمَا يَطْلُبُ» ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ يَمْسَحُ الْمُسَافِرُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ مِنْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ لَا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُنَا فَقَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٌّ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقُلْتُ اخْفِضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ فَإِنَّكَ نُهِيتَ أَنْ تَرْفَعَ صَوْتَكَ فَأَجَابَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى نَحْوٍ مِمَّا سَمِعَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ «هَاؤُمُ» ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْهَوَى عَنِ الْمَرْءِ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ لَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُنَا فَقَالَ «بَابُ التَّوْبَةِ مَفْتُوحٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ وَعَرْضُهُ مَسِيرَةُ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ» ثُمَّ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {هَلْ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ

“I came to Safwan bin ʿAssal Al-Muradi so he said to me: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘It has been conveyed to me that the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is doing.’” He said: “So I said to him: ‘Indeed there is something wavering’ - or - ‘some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the Khuff after defecation. So have you retained anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, when we were travelers, he ﷺ used to order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “So I said: ‘So have you memorized anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning love?’ He said: ‘Yes, we were in one of our journeys with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man, a harsh, foolish Bedouin, who had been at the end of the group, called him with a loud voice, saying: “O Muhammad! O Muhammad!” So the people said to him “Mah! Indeed, you have been prohibited from this.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with similar to his voice: “Come.” So he said: “A man loves a people but he has not reached them?” He said: ‘So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man is with whomever he loves.”’ Zirr said: “He did not cease reporting to me until he had reported that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has appointed a gate in the west - its width is the distance of a seventy-year journey - for repentance: it shall not be locked until the sun rises from its direction, and that is the Statement of Allah, Blessed be He and Most High, of the Ayah: The Day some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul shall be benefited by its believing.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3536)

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ يَا أَصْلَعُ؟ فَقُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًى بِمَا يَصْنَعُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّهُ حَاكَ أَوْ حَالَ فِي نَفْسِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَهَلْ حَفِظْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثًا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ قُلْتُ فَهَلْ حَفِظْتَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَنَادَاهُ رَجُلٌ فِي أُخْرَيَاتِ الْقَوْمِ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ أَعْرَابِيٍّ جِلْفٍ جَافٍ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ مَهْ فَإِنَّكَ قَدْ نُهِيتَ عَنْ هَذَا فَأَجَابَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى نَحْوٍ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ فَقَالَ «هَاؤُمُ» قَالَ الْمَرْءُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمْ يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ قَالَ «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» قَالَ فَمَا بَرِحَ يُحَدِّثُنِي حَتَّى حَدَّثَنِي «أَنَّ اللهَ ﷻ جَعَلَ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعُونَ عَامًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ» وَذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللهِ ﷻ {يَوْمَ يَأْتِي بَعْضُ آيَاتِ رَبِّكَ لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إِيمَانِهَا خَيْرًا}

[AI] I participated in the caliphate of Uthman. The reason for my visit was to meet the companions of Muhammad ﷺ . I met Safwan ibn Asaal al-Muradi and asked him if he had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said yes and that he accompanied him in twelve battles. I asked him about wiping over the socks, and he replied that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were traveling, to wipe over our socks for three days and nights, whether we had urinated, defecated, or slept. But as for impurity due to sexual defilement, he did not mention it. One night, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, he mentioned a gate from the west to the east, the width of which is seventy years, open for repentance and will not be closed until the sun rises from its opposite direction. Then a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and called out to him in a loud voice, saying, "O Muhammad, do you see the man who loves the people but cannot catch up with them?" The Prophet ﷺ replied in a similar tone, saying, "A person is with the one he loves."

وَفَدْتُ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُثْمَانَ ؓ وَإِنَّمَا حَمَلَنِي عَلَى الْوِفَادَةِ لُقْيُ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ قَالَ فَلَقِيتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ فَقُلْتُ لَقِيتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَغَزَوْتُ مَعَهُ ثِنْتَيْ عَشَرَ غَزْوَةً فَقُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى خِفَافِنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ وَأَيَّامَهُنَّ مِنْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ فَأَمَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ فَلَا قَالَ وَبَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَذَكَرَ بَابًا مِنْ قِبَلِ مَغْرِبِ الشَّمْسِ مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا مَفْتُوحٌ لِلتَّوْبَةِ لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلَهِ قَالَ وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُنَادِيهِ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَرَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ فَأَجَابَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِنَحْوٍ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ»

[AI] "When we used to travel, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us not to take off our footwear three times, except for when in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity). However, it is permissible to remove them for relieving oneself, urinating, or sleeping."

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثًا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ»

[AI] "What brought you here?" I said, "Seeking knowledge." He said, "No Muslim seeks knowledge except that the angels open their wings, pleased with what he is doing." I said to him, "You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I have something regarding the masah on the two khuffain after answering the call of nature or relieving oneself." So tell me something if you have heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were on a journey or traveling, to wipe over our socks for three nights and days, without taking them off except for janabah, but not for defecation, urination or sleep." I said to him, "Did you hear him saying anything regarding desires?" He said, "Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a battle or Umrah, and when an Arab came towards his riding animal, he started calling out loudly, 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' So it was said to him, 'Lower your voice, for you have been commanded to do so.' He said, 'By Allah, I will not lower it until I hear it.' And he was a tall, stout man. When the Prophet ﷺ heard his voice, he said, 'Here I am.' He said, 'Do you see a man who loves a people, but has not yet joined them?' So he did not leave until he finished speaking to us. He told me, 'The gate of repentance is opened until the sun rises from the west. It is a distance of seventy years, and it is still open until the sun rises from that direction.' And that is when 'It will not benefit a soul to believe in its faith, if it had not believed before, or had earned through its faith some good.'"

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ يَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ إِلَّا تَضَعُ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَفْعَلُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّكَ امْرُؤٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِنَّهُ حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ فَأَخْبِرْنِي بِشَيْءٍ إِنْ كُنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ نمْسَحَ عَلَى خِفَافِنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ وَأَيَّامَهُنَّ وَأَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَهُمَا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ» فقُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَقُولُ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ أَوْ عَمْرَةٍ فَإِذَا أَعْرَابِيٌّ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ فِي أُخْرَيَاتِ الْقَوْمِ جَعَلَ يُنَادِي بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقِيلَ وَيْلَكَ اغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ فَإِنَّكَ أُمِرْتَ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ وَاللهِ لَا أَفْعَلُ حَتَّى أَسْمَعَهُ وَإِذَا هُوَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ جَافٌّ جِلْفٌ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَوْتَهُ قَالَ «هَاؤُمُ» قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ فَقَالَ «ذَاكَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» فَلَمْ يَبْرَحْ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى حَدَّثَنِي «أَنَّ قِبَلَ الْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَفْتُوحًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً لَا يَزَالُ مَفْتُوحًا حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ» فَذَاكَ حِينَ {لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إِيمَانِهَا خَيْرًا}

[AI] A man did not leave his house seeking knowledge except that the angels would spread their wings in approval of what he was doing. I said to him, "Were you one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "No, but a passing thought occurred to me while I was wearing my socks." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were traveling, not to take off our socks for three days and nights except when in a state of janabah (sexual impurity), but we could remove them for sleep, relieving ourselves, or urinating."

مَا خَرَجَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ يَلْتَمِسُ عِلْمًا إِلَّا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَفْعَلُ قُلْتُ لَهُ كُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَكِنَّهُ حَدَثَ فِي نَفْسِي مَسْحٌ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ نَوْمٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ»

[AI] Whenever a person leaves his home in search of knowledge, the angels spread their wings in approval of his actions. I said to him, "Were you one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ?" He responded, "Indeed, it happened to me during the night as I wiped my feet." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to instruct us, when we were on a journey, not to remove our socks for three days and nights except for sexual impurity, but we could remove them for sleep, defecation, or urination."

مَا خَرَجَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ يَلْتَمِسُ عِلْمًا إِلَّا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَفْعَلُ قُلْتُ لَهُ كُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَكِنَّهُ حَدَثَ فِي نَفْسِي مَسْحٌ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ نَوْمٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ»

[AI] "What brought you here?" So I said, "You are a man who has accompanied the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and he has brushed on my chest over the two socks after using the restroom and urinating. Have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention anything about it?" He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us when we were traveling not to take off our socks for three days, except for using the restroom, urinating, or sleeping."

مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّكَ امْرُؤٌ قَدْ صَحِبْتَ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ فَهَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ

'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 96)

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوصِينَا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا أَوْ كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ نَوْمٍ وَبَوْلٍ وغائطٍ»

'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 96)

«أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا كُنَّا فِي سَفَرٍ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ مِنْ بَوْلٍ وَلَا نَوْمٍ وَلَا غَائِطٍ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ»

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to instruct us, when we traveled, not to remove our shoes for three days and nights, except for when in a state of major ritual impurity. He would instruct us to wipe over them if they became soiled with feces, urine, or sleep."

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ الْخُفَّيْنِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ولَيَالِيَهَا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ يَأْمُرُنَا بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَيْهَا مِنَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَالنَّوْمِ»

[AI] I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said, "When we were on a journey, he would instruct us not to remove our socks for three nights and days, except for janabah (sexual impurity), but rather for urination, defecation, or sleep."

سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ وَأَيَّامَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ»

[AI] Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this? He said, "Yes, he used to command us that when we were traveling, we should not remove our socks three times except for Janabah (major ritual impurity), but we could remove them for sleep, defecation, and urination."

سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ الْخِفَافَ ثَلَاثًا إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ نَوْمٍ وغائطٍ وَبَوْلٍ»

[AI] "What happened to you?" I said, "Seeking knowledge." He said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever sets out to seek knowledge, he is in the way of Allah until he returns and the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge.'" He said, "And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Indeed, Allah has opened a door from the west for repentance, the width of which is seventy years, and it will not be closed until the sun rises from the west.'" He said, "I said, 'Increase me with your mercy, may Allah have mercy on you.' He said, 'We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called him and said, 'O Muhammad, stop for us to ask you three things.' So the Prophet ﷺ answered him in a way similar to his saying, "Here I am." So the Bedouin came and said, 'A person likes a people, but he does not do their work.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A person is with whom he loves.' The Sahaba were not as happy with any other Hadith as they were with this one." He said, "I asked him about wiping over the socks. He said, 'When we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, we would wipe over the socks for three days and nights, and for the resident, one day and night.' And the wording is from Ali ibn Al-Madini."

مَا غَدَا بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَنْ غَدَا يَطْلُبُ عِلْمًا كَانَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ لَتَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ» قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ فَتَحَ بَابًا مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ لِلتَّوْبَةِ مَا بَيْنَ مِصْرَاعَيْهِ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ» قَالَ قُلْتُ زِدْنِي رَحِمَكَ اللهُ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ جَهْوَرِيُّ الصَّوْتِ أَنْ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قِفْ لِنَسْأَلَكَ ثَلَاثًا فَأَجَابَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِنَحْوٍ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ «هَاؤُمُ» فَجَاءَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَعْمَلْ بِعَمَلِهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» فَمَا فَرِحَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِحَدِيثٍ مَا فَرِحُوا بِهِ قُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ قَالَ «كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ مَسَحْنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ» وَاللَّفْظُ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمَدِينِيِّ

[AI] About the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding a conversation about desires? He said, "Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey called 'Asim' when a man from the outskirts of the tribe called him with a loud voice and a strong accent, saying, 'O Muhammad, O Muhammad!' The people said to him, 'Stop, you have been prohibited from doing this.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered him in a similar voice, saying, 'Ha'um, Ha'um.' The man asked, 'He loves the people, but why do they not keep up with him?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A person is with those whom he loves.' He continued narrating to us until he informed us that Allah has made a door for repentance in the west, the width of which takes seventy years to pass through. It does not close until the sun rises from its place. And that is the saying of Allah (SWT), 'The day when some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it has not believed before or earned in its faith any good.' [Surah Al-Anaam 158]

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْهَوَى حَدِيثًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ قَدْ سَمَّاهُ عَاصِمٌ إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَجُلٌ كَانَ فِي أُخْرَيَاتِ الْقَوْمِ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ جِلْفٌ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ مَهْ إِنَّكَ نُهِيتَ عَنْ هَذَا فَأَجَابَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى نَحْوٍ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ «هَاؤُمُ هَاؤُمُ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ» فَمَا بَرِحَ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى حَدَّثَنَا أَنَّ اللهَ جَعَلَ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَسِيرَةُ عَرْضِهِ سَبْعُونَ عَامًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ لَا يُغْلَقُ مَا لَمْ تَطْلُعِ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ قَالَ وَذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللهِ ﷻ {يَوْمَ يَأْتِي بَعْضُ آيَاتِ رَبِّكَ لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إِيمَانِهَا خَيْرًا} [الأنعام 158]

[AI] I went to Safwan bin Assal and I said to him: "You were one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and it has been bothering me that I have traces of urine and feces on my socks. Please tell me anything you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this." He replied: "He used to command us, when we were traveling or on a journey, not to remove our socks for three days and nights except in a state of major impurity, but it is permissible to remove them for urination, defecation, or sleep."

أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ وَالْغَائِطِ فَأَخْبِرْنِي بِشَيْءٍ إِنْ كُنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهِنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَكِنْ مِنْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ

[AI] I came to Safwan ibn 'Assal Al-Muradi and he asked me, "What brings you here?" I said, "I seek knowledge." He replied, "Verily, the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of satisfaction for what he seeks." I said, "May I ask you a personal question? I have a habit of wiping the two soles of my feet after relieving myself or urinating, and I was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Have you heard anything from him regarding this matter?" He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to instruct us, when we were on a journey or traveling, not to remove our socks for three days and nights, except for sexual impurity (janabah), but we can remove them for defecation, urination, or sleep."

أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ فَقَالَ مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ أَبْتَغِي الْعِلْمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَتَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضَاءً بِمَا يَطْلُبُ قُلْتُ حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتُ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْهُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كَانَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ إِلَّا مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ

[AI] Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it? He ﷺ said: "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us that when we are on a journey, we should not remove our socks for three days and nights, regardless of defecation, urination, or sleep, except when in a state of janabah."

سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَخْلَعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيَهُنَّ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَلَا بَوْلٍ وَلَا نَوْمٍ إِلَّا مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ

" عَنْ زرٍّ () قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ صَفْوانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ المُرَادى فَقاَلَ: مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ قُلْتُ: ابْتِغَاءَ العلم. قَالَ: فَإِنَّ المَلاَئِكَةَ تَضَعُ أَجْنحَتها لِطَالِبِ العلم عَنْ رِضِىً مَا يفْعَلُ ( *)، قَالَ: وَكَان رَسُولُ الله ﷺ إِذَا كنَّا فِى سَفَرٍ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ لاَ نَنْزِعَ أَخْفَافَنا ثَلاَثَةَ أيَّامٍ وَلَيَاليهِنَّ إِلاَّ مِنْ جَنَابةٍ، وَلَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ".
