We were ordered to go out (for ʿId) and also to take along with us the menstruating women, mature girls and virgins staying in seclusion. (Ibn ʿAun said, "Or mature virgins staying in seclusion)." The menstruating women could present themselves at the religious gathering and invocation of Muslims but should keep away from their Musalla.

أَنْ نَخْرُجَ فَنُخْرِجَ الْحُيَّضَ وَالْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ قَالَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ أَوِ الْعَوَاتِقَ ذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ جَمَاعَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَدَعْوَتَهُمْ وَيَعْتَزِلْنَ مُصَلاَّهُمْ

He (the Messenger of Allah) commanded us that we should take out unmarried women and the screened away ladies for 'Id prayers, and he commanded the menstruating women to remain away from the place of worship of the Muslims.

أَمَرَنَا تَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَأَمَرَ الْحُيَّضَ أَنْ يَعْتَزِلْنَ مُصَلَّى الْمُسْلِمِينَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to bring out on'Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Adha young women, menstruating women and screened away ladies, menstruating women kept back from prayer, but participated in goodness and supplication of the Muslims. I said: Messenger of Allah, one of us does not have an outer garment (to cover her face and body). He said: Let her sister cover her with her outer garment.

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَهُنَّ فِي الْفِطْرِ وَالأَضْحَى الْعَوَاتِقَ وَالْحُيَّضَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الصَّلاَةَ وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِحْدَانَا لاَ يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ قَالَ لِتُلْبِسْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا

"Messenger of Allah would order the virgins, the mature women, the secluded and the menstruating to go out for the two Eid. As for the menstruating women, they were to stay away from the Musalla and participate in the Muslims supplications." One of them said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What if she does not have a Jilbab? He said: 'Then let her sis lend her a Jilbab.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُخْرِجُ الأَبْكَارَ وَالْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ دَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ قَالَ فَلْتُعِرْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جَلاَبِيبِهَا

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to bring them (the women) out on the day of Fitr and the day of Nahr.” Umm ‘Atiyyah said: “We said: ‘What if one of them does not have an outer covering?’ He said: ‘Let her sister share her own outer covering with her.’”

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَهُنَّ فِي يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَالنَّحْرِ قَالَ قَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ فَقُلْنَا أَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لاَ يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ قَالَ فَلْتُلْبِسْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا

[AI] "To take out on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha the 'awatiq' and 'dhawat al-khudur' (female slaves or servants) and as for the menstruating women, they should withdraw from the prayer rows and witness the goodness and supplications of the Muslims." She said, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what if one of them does not have a 'jilbab' (cloak or outer garment)?' He said, 'Then let her sister cover her with her own jilbab.'"

أَنْ نُخْرِجَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمَ النَّحْرِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَإِنَّهُنَّ يَعْتَزِلْنَ الصَّفَّ وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِإِحْدَاهُنَّ الْجِلْبَابُ؟ قَالَ «تُلْبِسُهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to bring out the barriers and the women in seclusion on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. As for women who are menstruating, they should avoid the prayer area but witness the goodness and supplication of the Muslims. It was asked, "What if a woman does not have a cloak?" He replied, "Then her sister should lend her a cloak from her own cloak."

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي أَنْنُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَ قِيلَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ قَالَ فَتُلْبِسْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to bring them (the women) out on the day of Fitr and the day of Nahr.” Umm ‘Atiyyah said: “We said: ‘What if one of them does not have an outer covering?’ He said: ‘Let her sister share her own outer covering with her.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1307)

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَهُنَّ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى يَعْنِي أَبْكَارَ الْعَوَاتِقِ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فَقُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ؟ قَالَ «فَتُلْبِسُهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا»

"Messenger of Allah would order the virgins, the mature women, the secluded and the menstruating to go out for the two Eid. كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُخْرِجُ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ يَوْمَ الْعِيدِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَقَالَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِإِحْدَانَا جِلْبَابٌ؟ قَالَ «لِتُعِرْهَا جِلْبَابِهَا»

[AI] She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to remove the barriers and shade shelters." They asked, "What about women who are menstruating?" He said, "Yes, they should witness the good and the prayers of the Muslims." So we said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if a woman does not have a garment?" He said, "She should be given a garment by her sister from her own clothes."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ «نُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ» فَقِيلَ وَالْحُيَّضُ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ يَشْهَدْنُ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ» فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِحْدَانَا لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا ثَوْبٌ قَالَ «لِتُلْبِسْهَا أُخْتُهَا طَائِفَةً مِنْ ثَوْبِهَا»

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to bring out the secluded women on the day of 'Id (festival). He was asked: What about the menstruous women ? He said: They should be present at the place of virtue and the supplications of the Muslims. A woman said: Messenger of Allah, what should we do it one of us does not possess an outer garment ? He replied: Let her friend lend a part of her garment. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1136)

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ «نُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ يَوْمَ الْعِيدِ» فَقِيلَ وَالْحُيَّضُ؟ فَقَالَ «يَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ» قَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لِإِحْدَانَا ثَوْبٌ كَيْفَ تَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَ «تُلْبِسُهَا صَاحِبَتُهَا طَائِفَةً مِنْ ثَوْبِهَا»

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to make the young girls, the mature women, those secluded in their rooms, and those menstruating go out in procession on the two Eids. The menstruating women, however, would keep away from the prayer area and witness the good and the supplications of the Muslims. One of them said, "What if one of us does not have a jilbab (a loose outer garment)?" He said, "Let her borrow the jilbab of her sister from her garments."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُخْرِجُ الْأَبْكَارَ وَالْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَقَالَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِإِحْدَاهُنَّ جِلْبَابٌ؟ قَالَ فَلْتُعِرْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهَا

[AI] We have been commanded to go out in the two Eids, and we take out those who are menstruating, those with postnatal bleeding, and women in seclusion. As for those who are menstruating, they witness the congregation of Muslims and their supplications, and they abstain from prayer.

أَمَرَنَا بِالْخُرُوجِ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ وُنُخْرِجُ الْحُيَّضَ وَالْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ جَمَاعَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَدَعْوَتَهُمْ وَيَعْتَزِلْنَ صَلَاتِهِمْ

[AI] "We were ordered to go out during the two Eids, those who have seclusion and menstruation. As for menstruation, they should witness the prayer of the Muslims."

كُنَّا «نُؤْمَرُ بِالْخُرُوجِ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ ذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ مُصَلًّى الْمُسْلِمِينَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , commanded us to expel the barriers and women in seclusion during the day of Eid. As for women in menstruation, they are to witness the prayer of the Muslim community.

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ يَوْمَ الْعِيدِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ مُصَلًّى الْمُسْلِمِينَ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to let the women on their menstrual period and postpartum bleeding attend the two Eid prayers with the Muslims, witnessing their supplications and prayers, while the menstruating women abstained from praying.

أَمَرَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ ذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ يَشْهَدْنَ مَعَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ دَعْوَتَهُمْ وَصَلَاتُهُمْ وَتَعْتَزِلَ الْحُيَّضُ الصَّلَاةَ

[AI] Umm 'Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah from Basra came to us and said, "By my father and mother, meaning the Prophet ﷺ , he ordered us to go out on both Eids, the virgins and the menstruating women, to witness the goodness and the supplications of the Muslims."

قَدِمَتْ عَلَيْنَا أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ الْبَصْرَةَ فَقَالَتْ بِأَبِي هُوَ وَأُمِّي تَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to take out our mothers and fathers on the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day of Eid al-Adha, as well as the young girls, the women experiencing their monthly periods, and those in postpartum confinement. She (one of the women present) said, "As for the women experiencing their monthly periods, they should leave the prayer area but witness the goodness and supplications of the Muslims." She (another woman present) said, "So we asked, what if one of them does not have a cloak (to wear)?" He replied, "Then her sister can lend her a cloak from her own." Hisham (the narrator) said, "I heard Muhammad mentioning this from Umm Atiyyah, but I memorized it from the hadith of Hafsah."

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي أَنْ نُخْرِجَهُنَّ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمَ النَّحْرِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ قَالَتْ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَتْ فَقُلْنَا أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا الْجِلْبَابُ؟ قَالَ «تُلْبِسُهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا» قَالَ هِشَامٌ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا يَذْكُرُهُ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ وَلَكِنِّي لِحَدِيثِ حَفْصَةَ أَحْفَظُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to go out on the day of Eid to bring out the young unmarried women and those in seclusion, and to also bring out those who are menstruating. As for those who are menstruating, they should abstain from prayer, but they should witness the goodness and supplications of the Muslims. A woman asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what about if one of us does not have a Jilbab (outer garment)?" He replied, "She should borrow her sister's Jilbab."

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتِ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِذَا كَانَتْ إِحْدَانَا لَيْسَ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ؟ قَالَ «تُلْبِسُهَا أُخْتُهَا جِلْبَابَهَا»

"Messenger of Allah would order the virgins, the mature women, the secluded and the menstruating to go out for the two Eid. [AI] "To remove the obstacles from participating in the two Eids, those with menstruation will witness the congregation of Muslims and their prayers, and they will separate themselves from their prayers."

أَنْ نُخْرِجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ الْعَوَاتِقَ ذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَشْهَدْنَ جَمَاعَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَدُعَاءَهُمْ وَيَعْتَزِلْنَ مُصَلَّاهُمْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to escort our mothers and fathers on the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day of sacrifice, as well as the elderly women and those who are experiencing menstruation. Regarding women who are menstruating, they should abstain from going to the prayer area but should witness the goodness and supplications of the Muslims. It was then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what if one of them does not have a hijab?" He replied, "She should wear the hijab of her sister from her own clothing."

أَمَرَنَا بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نُخْرِجَهُنَّ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمَ النَّحْرِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَذَوَاتَ الْخُدُورِ وَالْحُيَّضَ فَأَمَّا الْحُيَّضُ فَيَعْتَزِلْنَ الْمُصَلَّى وَيَشْهَدْنَ الْخَيْرَ وَدَعْوَةَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالَتْ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِحْدَاهُنَّ لَا يَكُونُ لَهَا جِلْبَابٌ فَقَالَ لِتُلْبِسْهَا أُخْتُهَا مِنْ جِلْبَابِهَا

"لِتَخْرجُ العَوَاتِقُ، وَذَوَاتُ الخُدُرِ والحُيَّضْ، وَليَشْهدْنَ الخيرَ وَدَعْوَة المُؤمِنينَ، وَيَعْتَزِلَ الحُيَّضُ المُصلَّى".
