“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill with the sickness that would be his last” – (One of the narrators) Abu Mu’awiyah said: “When he was overcome by sickness” – “Bilal came to tell him that it was time for prayer. He said, ‘Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man, and when he takes your place he will weep and not be able to do it. Why do you not tell ‘Umar to lead the people in prayer?’ He said: ‘Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer; you are (like) the female companions of Yusuf.’” She said: “So we sent word to Abu Bakr, and he led the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to feel a little better, so he came out to the prayer, supported by two men with his feet making lines along the ground. When Abu Bakr realized that he was there, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to stay where he was. Then (the two men) brought him to sit beside Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr was following the lead of the Prophet ﷺ and the people were following Abu Bakr.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1232)

And if you want someone who has been previously married, then I am also available." He asked, "Who is the virgin?" She said, "Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr, the most beloved to Allah." He asked, "And who is the previously married?" She said, "Sauda bint Zama, who believed in you and followed you in everything you said." He said, "Go and let them know about it on my behalf." So she entered the house of Abu Bakr and said, "O Umm Rumman, what blessings and goodness did Allah bring upon you?" She asked, "And what is it?" Then he went out and said, "O Umm Rumman, indeed Mu'attim ibn 'Adi mentioned you to his son, and I swear by Allah, he has never broken a promise before. But he fulfilled it for Abu Bakr." So Abu Bakr entered upon Mu'attim ibn 'Adi, and with him was his wife Umm Al-Fata, and he said, "O son of my father Abu Quhafa, perhaps you are causing a problem for our friend Muhammad by allowing him to precede you in your religion, while he is proposing to you Suda bint Zama." Aisha said, "We reached Madinah and stayed in Bani Al-Harith from the Khazraj tribe. The Messenger of Allah came to our house and sat on a bed with men and women from the Ansar. So I mentioned the Hadith. Aisha informed me that they were in their house during noon and there was no one with Abu Bakr except his two daughters, Aisha and Asma. Suddenly, the messenger of Allah ﷺ came in while the sun was still high and set. He never missed to visit Abu Bakr's house at the beginning and end of the day. When Abu Bakr saw him, he came during noon and asked, "What brought you here, O Prophet of Allah? Is there an important matter?" When he entered their house, he said to Abu Bakr, "Take out those who are with you." Abu Bakr replied, "They are only my two daughters." He (the Messenger of Allah) said, "Allah has given me permission to leave for Medina." Abu Bakr asked, "O Messenger of Allah, the companions?" He answered, "The companions." Then Abu Bakr said, "Take one of the two riding camels." These were the two that Abu Bakr would prepare for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was given permission to leave. So Abu Bakr gave him one of the two camels and said, "Take it, O Messenger of Allah, and ride it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have taken it in return."

If he had a need to attend to his family, he would go to them, and if not, he would go back to his bed. If he went to his family, he would sleep in whatever state he was in, without touching water, until when the first athan (call to prayer) was given, he would wake up.
