[Machine] Abu Muslim Al-Khawlani, when he came to a ruined village, would stand in it and then say, "Oh, oh ruined village, where have your people gone and their deeds remain? Desire has been severed, while sin remains. O son of Adam, abandoning sin is easier than seeking repentance."

[Machine] Some of his family was in the mosque and they found him bowing in prayer, so they waited for him to finish and counted his bows. One of them counted that he bowed three hundred times and the other counted four hundred times before he finished. They said, "O Abu Muslim, we were sitting behind you waiting for you." He said, "If I had known where you were, I would have come to you. It was not for you to count my prayers against me, and I swear to you that the abundance of prostrations is better for me on the Day of Judgment."

And He will not enter anyone into Paradise except those who are merciful." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do have mercy for our wealth and our families." He said, "That is not what is meant. Rather, what Allah said, 'Desirous of you, merciful and kind towards the believers.'"

Indeed, he is prominent. Whoever wishes to meet the Messenger of Allah, he meets him. He used to sit on the ground and his food would be placed on the ground. He used to wear coarse clothing, ride on a donkey, and be accompanied by his servant, and by Allah, he would lick his hand (after eating)."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The wise person is one who evaluates themselves and works for what comes after death, while the weak one is one who follows their desires and hopes for things from Allah." He also informed us of Damrah ibn Habib, who said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The first thing to be lifted from this Ummah (nation) is trustworthiness and humility, to the point that you hardly see anyone who is humble."

[Machine] A man was praised in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, so he asked, "How often does he remember death?" They replied, "We have not heard him mention it or frequently remember it." He then asked, "How can he leave what he desires?" They replied, "He experiences worldly pleasures." He said, "He is not your companion there." Also, it was said to Rabee'ah ibn Abi Rashed, "Why don't you sit?" He replied, "The remembrance of death, when it departs my heart for an hour, corrupts my heart." Maalik (ibn Dinar) said, "I have never seen a man show more sadness than him."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a worldly life that prevents good deeds and from a life that prevents a good death."

Abdullah narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Al-Aswad ibn 'Amir narrated from Jarir ibn Hazim, from Al-Hasan, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a people sit together mentioning Allah, Allah says to His angels, 'I have forgiven them, so bear witness and reward them with the mercy.' The angels say, 'Our Lord, among them is someone who is not from them, but he happened to be passing by and sat with them.' Allah says, 'They are a people whose companions will not be unfortunate.'"

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "The world came to me green and sweet, and it raised its head and adorned itself for me. So, I said, 'I do not want you.' It (the world) said, 'If it slips away from me, it will not slip away from me except you.'"

ahmad-zuhd:2361ʿAbdullāh from my father > Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > al-Mubārak > al-Ḥasan > Anas b. Mālik

[Machine] I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was lying down on a bed with a pillow made of tanned leather filled with palm fibres beneath his head. Some of his companions entered upon him, including Umar. The Prophet ﷺ moved slightly and Umar noticed that there was a mark on his side caused by the edge of the bed. Umar began to cry, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What makes you cry, O Umar?" Umar replied, "By Allah, I do not cry except that I know you are more honorable in the sight of Allah than Kisra and Caesar, both of whom are spreading mischief in this world while you, O Messenger of Allah, are in a place like this." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Are you not pleased that they have the worldly life while we have the hereafter?" Umar replied, "Yes, of course." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, it is so."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Verily the least suffering for the inhabitants of Fire would be for him who would have two shoes and two laces of Fire (on his feet), and with these would boil his brain as boils the cooking vessel, and he would think that he would not see anyone in a more grievous torment than him, whereas he would be in the least torment. (Using translation from Muslim 213b)

ahmad-zuhd:2363ʿAbdullāh from my father > Hāshim > al-Mubārak > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] A man came to Umar, and he had a large boil on him. Umar asked, "What is this?" He replied, "It is the blessing of Allah, O Commander of the Believers." Umar said, "You are lying. Rather, it is the punishment of Allah, and He is saying, 'Ha! Ha!'"

ahmad-zuhd:2365ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī > ʿĀṣim > al-Shaʿbī > Masrūq

[Machine] About Masruq who said: "Where are those who are ascetic in this dunya (world) and those who are desirous of the Hereafter?" He (Masruq) said: "I would not give anything for it (this dunya)." Asim (ibn Umar) told me that he heard a man saying this, so he took his hand and stood him upon the graves of the Prophet ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar, and said, "These are the ones you are asking about."

ahmad-zuhd:2366ʿAbdullāh from my father > Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad > al-Mubārak > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] He was at a funeral, so he sat at a dark, gloomy grave. Then, a man from his family came and said, "O so-and-so, when he arrived, he said, 'Look here.' So, he did. He said, 'I see a narrow, dry, dark house with no food, drink, or wife in it.' He said, 'By Allah, that is your house.' He said, 'You speak the truth. By Allah, if you were to return to the grave, it would turn into this, so do not do it.'"

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do you know who are the foremost in seeking the shade of Allah?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Those who, when given what is right, accept it, when asked for something, give it, and when they judge between people, they judge with justice just as they would judge for themselves.'"
