He informed him that Abdullah ibn Umar said to Umar ibn Khattab, 'Propose to me the daughter of Salih.' Umar ibn Khattab said, 'He has orphans, and I do not prefer myself over them.' So Abdullah went to his uncle Zaid ibn Khattab to propose. Zaid went to Salih and said, 'Abdullah ibn Umar has sent me to propose to your daughter.' Salih said to me, 'He has orphans and I do not want to burden them with my own expenses.' I bear witness that I have married her to so-and-so.' The mother of the girl was inclined towards Abdullah ibn Umar. She approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, Abdullah ibn Umar has proposed to my daughter, but her father married her off to someone in his absence, and he is an orphan.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Salih and said, 'You have married off your daughter without consulting her?' Salih said, 'Yes, I consulted the women in themselves, and she is a virgin.' Salih said, 'I did this only so that Abdullah ibn Umar may believe her, for he has a share in my wealth equal to what I gave her.'
